  • Haul/Rediscoveries: I bought four of the Pat McGrath Lip Pencils (not here yet), since I’ve heard good things and I’d like to test, though I’m not so sure there’ll ever be a review but we’ll see (these at least seem like they’ll be comfortable to apply all-over). I also ordered, but don’t have yet, the new Sydney Grace palette (what a great item to review initially, I think). I picked up several hand washes from Antica Farmacista during their recent Black Friday sale.
  • Weekend plans: I shot a ton of photos/swatches on Thursday but didn’t end up having time during the day to process them (needed to write reviews for the next day), so my biggest priority is working through them later this morning/early afternoon and getting some of the swatches up for Saturday sneak peeks.
  • What are you most looking forward to in December?: My parents will be visiting at the end of the month, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them. The best part is that at the end of the year, there’s a lot of “best of” the year posts that I do, but those I can do ahead of time so I’m able to spend a bit more time with my family then, too.

Haul: I purchased a sous vide, a food vacuum (so I can hopefully stop being so wasteful), some knives, a culinary blow torch, and I really want to buy a whipped cream dispenser so I can make a frozen mousse recipe that I saw, but I don’t know how often I would use it b/c I hate whipped cream, but I’m sure there are other things I could use it for.

Weekend Plans: I have a performance in 3 weeks and I am not prepared at all, so Saturday, I’m going to really try to break through my dancer’s block and at least get a rough outline of where moves go in the song. Sunday, I will be at work.

I’m looking forward to some time off in December, I’m pretty exhausted, but I’m also looking forward to seeing my dad and spending time with my family.

Haul: Makeup – placed another order at Ulta lol: Wunder2 brow spoolie/brush, MAC New Crop eye shadow, ColourPop Snapdragon eye shadow, Yes To eye masks (x3, 2 are for gifts), Ulta brand Luxe Aromatherapy shower tabs (x4).
Not Makeup – Shark vacuum, fingerless gloves from Storiarts that are printed with text from Poe’s The Raven, black & white buffalo check pajamas from Old Navy, plaid bralette from MeUndies.

Weekend plans: Christkindlemarket at Naper Settlement today. Basic maintenance inside the house tomorrow since it’s supposed to thunderstorm all day. Sunday Hanukkah starts so we’re having some friends over and I’m going to make challah, brisket, and latkes.

Most looking forward to in Dec: Hanukkah dinner on Sunday. We also might do the Illumination lights walk at the arboretum next week and that’s always nice.

LOL! Poor Mellan is giving you the “how could you, Mama Hooman!?” stink eye! ?

Haul: Nothing except waiting for 4 of those 5 orders to arrive. My Coloured Raine QoH palette DID arrive at the USPS Phoenix Processing facility…and someone there mis-processed it and it went to the Seminole Orlando FLORIDA Processing Facility! The only thing I’m even considering getting with the $25 Sephora coupon is ND Darya now that I’ve been reminded of how much I fell in love with it all over again!

Weekend plans: I have an appointment with my cardiologist NP this afternoon. Trying not to wiggle out of it again, as I’ve rescheduled it twice before. Might go to Sephora afterwards. Food shopping is of the utmost priority this weekend. Listen to my meeting on Sunday.

Favorite part of December: Cooler weather!!! And usually some rain, too. I relished that late last night. Just listening to it come down was so relaxing and nerve calming! Also; eggnog ice cream!

Tracey E Avatar

Hi Nancy, I picked up the ND Darya during the recent Sephora sale and I’m really enjoying it. It wears beautifully and stays true to the many glowing reviews it received. I limited myself to a few items and I’m so glad it made the cut!

Nancy T Avatar

Tracey E., I did actually pick up Darya last night! After playing with the different shades on the back of my arm, I could see this working very nicely on my wintertime coloring and brightening it up from the doldrums. At least I hope so! This winter, I appear paler than years past. Not sure why, but I may actually need to buy a separate foundation for winter. Something I haven’t had to do till now! But I digress. Darya looks like a pink diamond layered.

Rachel R. Avatar

Awwww, poor Mellan. What a silly hat mommy picked out for you. 😀

??????? ?????: My hubby has today off since he got called in to work the Sat. and Sun. after Thanksgiving. We’re going to do some shopping today. We plan to get the Christmas tree and outside lights up this weekend. I need to do more Christmas gift shopping.

???? ??? ??? ???? ??????? ??????? ?? ?? ?????????: Christmas lights. I absolutely adore all Christmas lights. They’re magical and make driving in the dark a little more bearable.

Genevieve Avatar

That’s a lovely haul Rachel, what are your favourites?
I love Christmas lights too and our grandchildren adore them. I think they would be beautiful on a winter’s evening -so lucky you are to have Christmas in winter. The snow and winter weather makes Christmas far more magical I think than having it in searing heat…..

Rachel R. Avatar

We rarely get snow in the valley, but when we do it’s beautiful with the Christmas lights reflecting off them. It’s so hard to for me to imagine Christmas in the summer. I hope you all barbecue or grill instead of roasting turkeys in the house.

I haven’t tried all the CP lippies yet, but Hypno Tease is an outstanding gold gloss. Wow! My other favorites from my haul are Bite Beauty Sagittarius Lipstick (so vivid and creamy-feeling), UD Video (I was worried it would look like bronzer on fair skin, but it works as a blush just fine), and MAC Shimmer & Spice Lipstick (beautiful alone or as a topper). I’m loving all the greens in the Apocalyptic Beauty Forest Goddess Collection, too.

Haul/Rediscoveries: I haven’t bought or used makeup in a minute my friends lol it’s a silly excuse but having a baby is tiring and the last thing I want to do at the end of a long day is fight my waterproof mascara off my face.

Weekend plans: My husband’s unit’s Christmas party is tomorrow. A friend is babysitting for us and I’m so nervous to be away from my baby mostly because I don’t want him to be difficult for my friend ?

WHICH BRINGS ME TO WHY I AM HERE in the first place. Somehow in the move I’ve misplaced my go-to makeup bag and while everything else is still at my grandmother’s in SC. With that said I have EXACTLY NONE HIGHLIGHTERS FOR A HOLIDAY PARTY. Nobody in my real life would understand what a travesty this is so I can’t exactly seek comfort from them. Somebody from the Temptalia community please hold me and tell me everything will be okay. Stroke my hair and shush me softly until I fall asleep.

Yennyways it’s been a while since I’ve popped my head in here. How is everyone? I’m well. I’ve moved back to PA from SC and can’t remember the last time I was so happy. Since it was a mad dash moving from DE to SC and SC to PA, we’ve unpacked 98 spoons and no bed sheets. Fun stuff.

The baby boy is almost 8 months now. He’s absolutely amazing and happy and strong and beautiful. I can’t believe I get to be his mom.

What are you most looking forward to in December?: We’re hosting my husband’s family’s Christmas this year and am so excited for it!!

Deborah S Avatar

Really, no one will miss what they don’t know was suppose to be there, or at least that is what I tell myself! !. Or tap some vaseline lightly on the tops of your cheeks. So happy your little man is doing well.

Genevieve Avatar

I am giving you a hug all the way from Australia Joyce and I know exactly how you feel when no-one else cares or gets your makeup predicament…. CeeBee’s suggestion is a good one – have you an eyeshadow shade that can subsitute for a highlighter? Are you able to go out to a DS and get an Essence one – they are pretty inexpensive and Christine reviewed them the other day and they were great.
So happy to hear that your bubba boy is growing up healthy and happy – he is lucky to have parents as wonderful as you both are. I am sure he will be fine with your friend babysitting him. Enjoy your evening out.

Celesta Avatar

Haul: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Tinted Moisturizer (they came out with a lighter shade than fair, so I can finally wear this product!); Maison Margiela ‘Replica’ By the Fireplace (THE. MOST. AMAZING. SCENT. EVER.); and a couple of new pairs of booties.

Rediscoveries: ABH Soft Glam and Modern Ren. They’ve been sitting in my vanity for a while, but I pulled them back out this week. They go so nicely together.

Weekend plans: Taking my little boy to the children’s museum to meet Santa for the first time. He can be shy so it’s a tossup on how he’ll react.

What are you most looking forward to in December?: Doing so many Christmas things during the month. It seems like every weekend is jam packed with something fun to do for the holidays. I’m so excited!

Mariella Avatar

Celesta, I bought By the Fireside several months ago. I can’t believe how delicious it smells (I almost want to eat it!). I’ve tried some of their other scents and while one or two are okay, I didn’t like any of them well enough to purchase, EXCEPT By the Fireside. I think it will be a staple for me.

chris bolden peterson Avatar

Haul: I purchased several of the new OPI gel colors in the latest collection, the new Olay Energy Facial Mist. I am excited for P. Starr’s latest collection. I am on the hunt for a tasty peppermint/chocolate coffee creamer. Recommendations welcomed..

Weekend Plans: I will be working – with the new Members of Congress — designing and outfitting their new Congressional offices.

I’m looking forward to spending time with my mom who will be visiting for the holidays. Her first time ever during the season at my home. It will be busy but enjoy spending time with her at 80 years young.

Mariella Avatar

Haul: Nothing at all; rediscovery – Stila’s In the Light palette (with the house in absolute disarray, it was near at hand so that’s what I’ve been using).

Weekend plans: first the gym, and then a friend is hosting dinner tomorrow night for 5 couples who’ve been friends since university days (we raised our kids together and our lives ran along parallel lines in so many ways). I said I’d bring desserts (yes, plural – an apple almond torte and a (vegetarian) mincemeat apple crisp with Brazil nuts). On our way to our friends’ house, we’ll be dropping off our younger son’s snow tires so he can have them put on (he stores them here but lives in the city where we’re going tomorrow). Sunday, I’ll be trying to clean up the worst of the drywall dust (the work is nowhere near finished but I have to Swiffer and vacuum up some of this stuff as it’s getting tracked EVERYWHERE).

What I am looking forward to the most in December is having my HOUSE BACK to how it was. I spent last weekend cleaning the worst of the mess from having the floors redone, little knowing that the small repair to the ceiling in our closet would turn into a monumental mess and chaos (we’ve had to move out of our bedroom, get all the furniture out and pack away every single item of clothing, shoes, etc. I managed to grab a few things to get me through the week and we’re sleeping in our guest room, which used to be my daughter’s room but I don’t know where anything is and it is REALLY getting to me. And the MESS (I mentioned the mess, right???) I am so thankful that my sis in law is hosting Xmas this year.

AB Avatar

I too find it so satisfying to getting my house back in order if it’s gotten away, or there’s been work done, etc. It feels invisible sometimes — like getting car maintenance done — but hugely satisfying and calming.

Genevieve Avatar

Mariella, I feel your pain all the way here to Melbourne Australia! I absolutely DREAD the thought of when we have to get our tiles and carpet replaced. Our friends did it a couple of years ago and I don’t she has recovered yet because her husband liked to keep things for a rainy day…..
Our carpet is in need of replacing and just when we were going to, our grandchildren started arriving, so we thought we had best wait until they’ve grown up a bit. Because they visit here so frequently, our house is like a second home to them. And we have a big house too.
Not having to find your stuff must be so frustrating and I hope that the chaos is over soon for your peace of mind.
Anyway, I love the sound of the desserts you are making – we make an Almond torte as well and it is so delicious – not exactly low calorie, but very yummy. The vegetarian mince tarts with the brazil nuts on them seems pretty good too. I hope you enjoy your dinner out and it takes your mind off the state of your house.

Mariella Avatar

Genevieve, the friends who hosted the dinner on the weekend have had 3 grandchildren arrive in pretty rapid succession – they now have a 3 year old and 2 babies from their 2 sons. And they just redid their house and the living room is all in white….white walls, white window treatments, white furniture. Lynne says she’ll just keep the upholstery cleaning company on speed dial!

The dessert with the mincemeat was an apple crisp, not tarts (pastry still stresses me out after all these years!). It’s one of those lovely, homey desserts with a nice holiday touch because of the addition of the mincemeat (I also grate orange rind into it though that’s not part of the recipe). It’s for a 9 by 9 inch pan but I increased the recipe and used an (almost) 9 by 13 pan. What I like is that the hardest part of the recipe is peeling the apples…my kind of recipe! If either of the recipes interests you, I can try to find links or we could figure out a way to get in touch so I can email them to you.

CeeBee Avatar

OMG, THAT TURKEY HAT?! HOW COULD YOU?! 😉

Haul: From Colourpop, Blowzy gloss, Yes Is More UML, Happy Thoughts lippie stick, Dream Sequence highlighter palette, stick foundation and 3 glitter gels.

Weekend plans: It’s going to rain all weekend. I have an afternoon garden wedding to go to on Saturday and then Sunday will be Netflix and chill. We need to start getting organised for our Christmas break, so I really need to start making some lists!

Best thing about December: Strawberries! And a 2 week break over Xmas and New Years that I am sooooooo looking forward to…

Erin Avatar

Haul/Redicoveries: Nothing to haul yet, I might haul some Christmas stuff. I’m so broke but I need sparkle :/

As for rediscoveries I forgot about a History De Parfum set I have and I’m trying them now!

Weekend: Not sure yet. Shopping for sure! Stupid food won’t buy itself.

December: My mom is coming on the 30th to visit and we’re going to have a very belated Christmas! It will be the first time in about 14 years I’ve been with my mom for Christmas.

Genevieve Avatar

I somehow think that Mellon isn’t a fan of his headgear!

Haul/Rediscoveries: Digging into my small quad palette bag, I came up with Dior’s Bonne Etoile. This was Dior at its heyday. Such beautiful shades and so pigmented. Love it.
Otherwise, no hauls this week.

Weekend Plans: Friday – just housework, Saturday – a drive through the countryside and lunch at a restaurant. It is quite hot today.
Sunday – probably putting up the Christmas tree.

Like about December: The Christmas spirit, although it’s a bit harder here in Aus with the heat and everything. Jolly snowman doesn’t quite relate. I love decorating the house and bringing out the Christmas crafts for our grandchildren to do now that they are older.

AJ Avatar

Haul: My Black Friday orders all arrived, so I can’t wait to play with my Melt Smoke Sessions palette this weekend 🙂 Also I used my $20 VIB coupon today, I ordered myself the Pat McGrath Dark Star palette, and the Replica Jazz Club cologne for my partner’s stocking (which is also kind of a present for me, because who doesn’t like a good-smelling partner?).

Weekend plans: We’re about to leave to go out for dinner and see Jimmy Carr. Tomorrow night we’ve got a friend’s holiday party, which features a ridiculous gift swap. And Sunday night I have a belly dance performance (good excuse to wear new makeup!). We’re also going to the Urban Craft Uprising show but I’m not sure if that will happen Sat or Sun.

Thing I am most looking forward to in December: I have so many fun events, it’s hard to choose! Usually the belly dance community kind of shuts down for Dec as everyone has holiday gigs and family obligations, but I have three performances and a costume swap meet to go to!

That turkey hat is adorable, by the way. I bought a tiny cactus costume to try on my cats and they looked about as pleased with it as Mellan looks with his hat.

Brenda C Avatar

Lol, Poor Mellan doesn’t have a choice!

Haul/Rediscoveries: I bought MJ Glam Glitter Gel Eyeliner in Gold I stopped by Sephora to pick it up, they had the Dior Joy perfume right out front on display so I tried it and fell in love so I purchased that as well.

Weekend Plans: There are a few Christmas Craft Fairs tomorrow that I want to go to. It’s supposed to snow tonight so hopefully the roads won’t be dreadful that might be a game changer.

What are you most looking forward to in December?: My kids are taking me out for dinner next weekend for my birthday. My husband will be home for my birthday. We are driving out to Vancouver for Christmas, it will be nice to see my family. Then we will drive down the west coast to Santa Barbara and then across to Vegas for New Years. We did this trip a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. We don’t like snow.

Lesley Avatar

You owe me one, sez Mellan.

Haul: A nice makeup bag and brush roll (because the we,come gift bag for making Rouge does not. us it); the Modern Renaissance palette from Ulta Cyber Monday (I used points and it cost $6, less than the Revolution dupe; Murad moisturizer and serum from Sephora Cyber Monday; new panties from a local shop.

Weekend plans: some Beethoven and Bartok by a community orchestra and the regular chores.

I look forward to December 21 when the days start to get longer. Also my husband and I have birthdays and I get to eat cake without guilt. And everything is lit up.

kjh Avatar

Skipped both works today, as the gizzards were off to the races, starting at 4A. Turned out to be pretty necessary. Nars did brighten the day, with deliveries from .com and Nordie’s. So glad that I did not skip Hot Tryst. Like the summer DI, it needed to be started with a stiff brush, but all colors are fine, can be sheered out or go fairly dramatic. As I had not been able to see it, I was afraid of the middle colors being too pink/coral, but fine. provocateur demanded instant application, between trots to the throne and washing the hands! Wow. Nice. Not a fan of any N base products, including RCC, but he does red family lips and blush that truly channel my inner fangirl. Yeah, I need more red lips (?4 and a mini) so badly, that I got the red Audacious lip palette, too! Weak. Overkill. Naughty. (bring it on!) Despite having an unspeakable stash of Audacious, none of the colors in that palette are duped in stash. Very psychworthy. Just what I needed, with my gut feeling wrung out. (Really looking forward to Jan w/U&L scope, 2 day prep, and the hospital in lieu of the GE’s clinic. Not. But prob really good call on the new gizzardologist’s part.). I got a lot done on my RDOs this week, and my mood was lifted, until the gut revolt. I believe your gut is your second brain, and has major influence on mood. My day job, which was allotting me 2 hours for 3 individuals, was still giving me 2 for 33 people. Not a typo. WTF? Plus, the evaluation schedule has gone from every five years to every two…and new folks must have their p/w done in 45 days, not 90. You can understand how angry that has made me. I got slight increases in the long run in 1/3 settings, and basically as much as I want/need until the end of the year. I work like a pack of German Shepherds for them. Until I got hot under the collar with the program specialist and said that the therapist jobs, given the time allotted, would become like the behaviorist jobs…a revolving door, with constant vacancies, that the regional director offered me more time. Non profits. I was too angry to speak up myself to the director, and did not want to do the math to prove my point. Oy, well, I vowed to spend none of it on m/u! Kind of SSDD/SSDW/what I can manage for the w/e. Not that low end retail at night is any less stressful or exhausting than day job…. December: well, my immune skin stuff is not liking the weather, the wind tunnel by the sea and the temp (I didn’t tolerate sun in the summer, and went in the ocean around 6P, when not working…) I hope the docs can get on top of this, Bec I only whined about 1/2 of it!

Nancy T Avatar

KJH, you *know* I sure can relate to your gizzard issues, eh? I feel so bad for you, though, because it absolutely sucks when one almost needs their throne tied around their waist just to get out of the house! Hopefully, it’s nothing seriously wrong with yours, and also that your “Gizzardologist” is a true champ and helps you to feel better sooner than later.

Jill Avatar

I just love the adorable pics of your pup!

1. I mentioned this in the highlighter section, I’m loving Clinique’s Chubby highlighter stick. Also Kevyn Aucoin Neo-Blush, I wore it the other day and got several compliments on how “refreshed” I looked even though I was having a full blown migraine and could NOT call out sick.
2. I need to plan out my shopping, I also have a tradition with my biological mother (I’m adopted, turns out we both knit) where we always knit each other at least one present and (yikes) I haven’t started it yet. I can get it done, I just need my migraines to cooperate. I’m on the migraine-almost-gone to the migraine-hangover stage so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
3. A project at work that I’ve been working on for the past 2ish years (a new computer system) went live in early Nov, I’ve been treading water ever since putting out fires and watching helplessly as my managers rearrange my priorities and then get mad that something they bumped wasn’t being worked on. (sigh) So I’m hoping December will bring more progress towards less reactionary-driven work and let me get back to normalcy. I’m hoping with the holidays people will leave me to my work…but something tells me that’s wishful thinking!

Kris Aleli Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries:
Lisa Eldridge Velvet Lipsticks, I received them today and they are glorious, I’m so glad that I held off buying all of the other lipsticks that have tempted me this year.

Rituel De Fille: the Alchemist highlighter (it looks like a really beautiful highlighter, I’m happy that I held back on the PMG skin fetish) inner glow Creme pigment in delirium, ethereal Veil Concealer in Sycorax (that formula will be completely new to me, so hopefully it will be good) and rare light Creme luminizer in Moon Pillar.
(USPS needs to get on it with the shipping, the tracking shows that it’s still in California.)

Sephora: Surratt Beauty goodies, Lipslique in Bandy, brow pomade in clear, artistique blush in Grissaill, Rogeur, Chaleur, Rosee Soir.
I saw the sample of the La Vie En Rose and I think that it is a beautiful color. In fact the whole line is underrated, but I understand that his aesthetic is not part of the current trend and it’s sold at such a premium price.

Anddd scrubs for work! I moved locations and it requires a different color scrubs.

Weekend plans: I work this weekend and i will be under “orientation” so we’ll see how that goes.

What are you most looking forward to in December: first Christmas with the baby and since I’m working closer to home with part time hours. It has really relived a lot of my stress. He’s growing so fast and he’s such a perfect little boy.
It’s also my husbands grandpas 100th birthday so that will be a nice gathering with his side of the family too.

My final Black Friday items arrived after I left for work, so I will have to wait until I get home. I did pick up the new By Terry CC Lumi Serum, Tom Ford Supernouveau, Sisley Phyto Matte Lip Twist in Ruby and Chantecaille Wild Beauty Trio from Saks.

Weekend Plans – working and trying to determine if my police ride along the other night made me sick.

Looking forward to in Dec – not sure yet. Not celebrating the holidays until January, so mostly work, work, work.

Tracey E. Avatar

I absolutely adore the turkey headwear Mellan is reluctantly sporting!

Haul:

– Smith Cosmetics (Black Friday 20% off brushes) – Picked up the 220 Eyeshadow Finishing brush (this brush blends everything), 256 Large Arrowhead, 212 Tightliner, and newly released 157 Wedge (square ferrule), 103 Filbert, and 154 Quill Face Brush. The Quill brush is like using angel wings to apply powder products. I’m in love. The Smith face brushes really make you feel like you’re painting on your makeup. Also picked up a small Smithfolio, which came in a velvet pouch inside a large box that also contained the brushes I ordered. I gasped at the presentation. (I’m giving my 17 year old niece a the same Smithfolio and a few brushes and I’m over the moon at the package she will open on Christmas Day).

– Sephora (20% off): Pat McGrath Bronze Seduction palette (also took my breath away), Milk tightliner pencil.

– Chanel – Les 4 Ombres Legerete et Experience matte quad – the peach shades are beautiful.

Weekend Plans: Attending the Christmas Spectacular performance by our symphony and getting through the to do list on an otherwise rainy weekend.

What I’m most looking forward to in December: I love the peace that comes with holidays where it feels like the city is shut down. I savour how quiet the streets become. We go back home to Canada to spend the holidays with our families, and I look forward to slower days lingering over lunch or a games afternoon with friends, having a large Christmas crossword with many huddled around trying to complete it, games that turn into marathons, and watching tournament hockey.

AB Avatar

The Chanel Les 4 Ombres Legerete et Experience is at the top of my “will get next chance” list. Like, if I don’t see i at the next store I go to, I will get in the car and drive anywhere to find it. I’m hooked. It looks just lovely.

Tracey E. Avatar

Hi AB, before you drive too far, check if your counter has it. I’ve only seen it online at Chanel.com. (You can try the code INTHEBAG for overnight shipping.) It’s a lovely palette.

Mellan manages still to look elegant and patrician even with a silly hat on!

Haul: Guerlain Peau de Soie foundation in N01 (DSC but I found one in a drugstore in Germany and scooped it up); Becca beach tint in Watermelon (I like the formula, but wish it were longer lasting), another MJ highliner in Jazzberry as mine is drying out, Shiseido hydrating toner (like it).

Weekend: a 2-week trip starting next week, so packing, laundry, etc. .And, since I have a small holiday gathering at my house the night after I get back, some extra cleaning. Otherwise, routine errands and pilates.

Looking forward in December: Our company closes for the last two weeks of December every year, and it’s a luxurious and cleansing time. I use it to spend time with friends and family, do house projects long put off, some extra working out. Last year, projects included going through all family photos and materials, reorganized into new nicer storage. A really nice period off.
