Spring for Pastels for Your Nails

Essie’s The Art of Spring Collection is a pretty-in-pastel six shade launch.  They’re a nice bunch of colors that give you some color on your nails without being too bold, so they may work nicely for those who need to have more office-appropriate nails.

  • Red Nouveau is a brightened red cream. It’s pretty, but it’s a shade we’ve seen before. It applies beautifully, though — very smooth, even, and nearly opaque in just one coat.
  • Tart Deco is a peached coral cream. The formula was easy to work with, surprisingly. Though I’m wearing three coats in the swatch, you really only needed two for an opaque finish. The shade itself isn’t too thick, but it is on the thicker side, and I didn’t have any issues with streakiness.
  • Van D’go is a lightened, milky pink with a peach cream finish. It took two coats to get an opaque look, but I went with three for swatching purposes. Like Tart Deco, the polish was thick but not overly so, and I didn’t encounter any streakiness with this shade either.
  • Pop Art Pink is a milky, jelly baby pink. Even though I don’t do sheers often, this shade is exceptional because you can layer it with three coats for a near opaque finish. One coat will get you that softly pink-tinted look that’s cute and feminine without being bold.
  • Neo Whimsical is a light lavender cream with a pink tint. I found this shade to be on the runny side, but three coats get you opaque color.
  • Lilacism is a cool-toned lilac cream with blue undertones. This gave fairly opaque color with two coats, but I swatched it with three just to be sure. Like Neo Whimsical, Lilacism is a little on the more watery side, but it’s not a big deal, because it dries about average and still gives solid results.

Recommendation: If you love pastel creams, you may want to take a look at Essie’s spring collection. If, on the other hand, you’re not so into pastels or creamy finishes, this is not the collection for you. It’s an almost romantic collection with the color palette, which makes it very fitting for spring.

I bought tart deco, in love with the color, but then when I put Sally Hansen megashine topcoat on it, it turned orange. No coral at all, just orange. So just be aware that it may change with topcoat!

Just came on here to comment about Van D’go thinking I was going to sound strange when I said it changed color but apparently I’m not the only one with the problem.

I personally found the formula more difficult to work with then other Essie polishes as it was thicker, so when I finally got the polish on perfectly even/smooth I put Sally Hansen Megashine on also, and found that Van D’go looked more like Tart Deco. Just to see if I was imagining things, I took the polish off one finger and put 3 coats on it without the top coat, and it looks true to the color in the bottle. Very strange!

Has anyone had this problem with Neo Whimsical? Really wanting to try it.

i have van d’go and lilacism I found van d’go made my hands look darker and kind of dirty 🙁 but lilacism is soooooooooooo gorgeous everytime I wear it my friends or random people would comment on how beautiful the colour is its like the most perfect shade of lilac!

Thanks for your review, Christine.

I already have Tart Deco and it’s such a fun and bright color that it makes me smile everytime I look at my nails! 😀

I plan on byuing Van D’Go and Neo Whimsical as my next nail polishes.

Pop Art Pink for me!!!!! I love, love LOVE that pink on my nails, it just looks so much prettier than a French manicure to me, which I think is just a wee bit boring these days! I love the red too. Nothing as sexy as short nails with some pretty red stuff on! 🙂

I own Neo-Whimsical and I like it. It looks nice with my super pale skin. I just wish Essie had done a pastel yellow in this collection!

To me, Lilacism looks alot like essie Looking for love from their spring 2008 collection.i really liked that collection, it was inspired by the colors of the candy sweethearts.

Helena Avatar

I love the names, but the colors are, typically of Essie, kind of “meh” to me for the most part (Lilacism would have to be an exception).

I just got lilacism, tarte deco, and van d’go! The colors are beautiful, especially tarte deco. Do you recommend wearing a top coat? I saw some comments about the polishes changing colors..

Melly Avatar

Shoot. Just bought tarte deco and applied seche vite over it. Unfortuntely, it doesn’t look nearly as lovely as your swatch. Just… orange. I probably just laid it on too thick.

it’s not that i’m not a sunshine and lollipops kinda gal…but i don’t want it on my nails! i don’t need fluffy bunny polish, i want in your face kickass polish instead! 😀
