Dolce & Gabbana Caramel Classic Cream Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Have you tried Dolce & Gabbana’s Caramel?

Dolce & Gabbana Caramel Classic Cream Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is a tanned nude with a subtle golden sheen. It’s semi-opaque–it can be a touch streaky–but it’s opaque in most places.  The streakiness is bothersome, if only because the majority of the range doesn’t suffer from that issue. Like other Dolce & Gabbana lip products, it is heavily rose scented.  I get an average of four hours of wear with Dolce & Gabbana’s Classic Cream Lipsticks; they’re not overly moisturizing, but I don’t find them drying.  They just… are.

At first glance, it seems like a shade that would really work for warmer skin tones. After wearing it, though, I’m not so sure. I’m not sure who this would flatter–it made my skin tone look almost green! On me, it’s probably one of the least flattering lip colors I’ve tried in recent memory. I’m actually really curious to see if anyone else has picked this up and found it to work really well (if so, please tell me what your skin tone is!).

Hi Christine,

Funnily enough, this is one of the only nudes I can pull off! I use it with the D&G Caramel lipgloss and it gives me the perfect beige nude lip. My MAC skintone is NC20 and I wear 020 in Diorskin Nude. Other nude/beige lippies I like are Sephora Brand Lip Attitude Glamour Dolce Nude, Dior Rouge Dior Lipcolor in Beige Indecise 298 and Josie Maran lipstick in Birthday Suit. Hope this helps!

I completely agree. I purchased MAC’s Siss and it’s looks EXTREMELY unflattering on my lips by itself. I have figured out how to doctor it up. But I was hoping for a regular nude lip. Now I’ve come to terms that I won’t be able to do that trend…or rather that I don’t like that trend on myself.

Kat Avatar

I’m starting to wonder who can, actually? I’m a bit paler than regularly available Mac foundation (which… might tell me something right three. Nude: dead), and haven’t yet found a working nude lippie. Colours NAMED nude, or any variation thereof, seem to be all over the spectrum, and none of them near any skin tone I know of… Outside fever dreams. I might need sleep, the thought of all these nude lipstick-coloured people are making me giggle majorly XD

It’s too bad you didn’t check out the Empowered lipstick back in January with MAC’s All Ages All Races All Sexes range, THAT color was a beauty. I bought two of them 🙂 but I should have bought three of them 🙁 LOL

Maria Avatar

I can only really see it working as a nude on people with a skin colour very close to the lipstick’s shade. Even then, dicey. 😉 It’s too bad, because the texture looks lovely.

Gosh, this color is nauseating. It does almost have a green tinge to it, and reminds me of clay mud with algae growing in it. I can’t imagine this looking good on anyone, and would challenge anyone to do so, without layering several products over it. Yech.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear a lip color that is less than flattering, you can pretty much make anything work. This must be a really odd lipcolor. :S

Shefali Avatar

Interesting that it doesn’t look as good on…I see what you mean about the skintone issue. I think it has too much of a yellow undertone to it. It’s beautiful in the tube though!

Fey Avatar

Lol. I don’t think this makes your skin tone look remotely green. All it does is pull out the darker parts of your skin tone, like where shadows fall. Honestly, it looks fine on you.
Maybe it’d be better suited for skin tones that are slightly darker or slightly lighter. I agree that it seems warm.

Bonnie Avatar

Eeek! You don’t look like you. I think this might look really pretty on someone with very dark skin, but I can’t imagine any skin tones pale through medium-dark where it would look good.

Sweeda88 Avatar

You’re right, it does make you look a bit green. I also hate how patchy it looks. I’d rather buy something from MAC or Estee Lauder that actually is even. Thanks for the review!

Chai Avatar

I want that! I just put that on my wishlist last night lol. I haven’t seen it in person, but from online swatches I’m guessing it’s similar to MAC’s Siss lipstick, hopefully not as drying on my lips. I’m about NC43 in MAC and Honey in Bobbi Brown.

Meheen Avatar

If anyone here is a painter, this color is SPOT-ON Yellow Ochre or maybe Raw Sienna mixed with a Hansa Yellow. So, I guess kind of a green-toned yellow/brown. Seems more like a concealer shade than a lipstick.

ak Avatar

Wow I think that I like it! LOL Tell me please Christine how does this compare to MAC’s Siss, Fresh Brew, Touch or the Empowered lipstick from the All Races, All Sexes, All Ages range from back in January?

Skybluesky Avatar

It’s not you; it’s the lipstick. Remember when you rocked that blue lipstick? You looked great with it! I don’t care much for beige nude lips, anyway; pinkish beige lips are more flattering.

Jenn Avatar

It’s a beautiful color, but it did something funky with your skin tone. Hmm…

It looks similar to 3N l/g so I think this color would be better suited on NW45-55.

Rachael Avatar

I was watching “The Graduate” recently and this sort of looks like the same ultra-nude/beige lip colour Anne Bancroft wears in the movie. I guess if you were looking for a very 1960s-ish nude lipstick this would work.

aradhana Avatar

i thought from looking at the pic of the lipstick in the tube, and the swatch that it was an odd one and was wondering who it would suit, but seeing your full face pic, i actually think this looks nice on you…

egon Avatar

hi Christine I have a question unrelated to the post sorry =)

if the lipsticks that show pink on you show brown on me does that mean im cool tone since you are warm?

Frances Avatar

Hi, Christine!

I’ve tried this lipstick on several times, and I gotta say, it looks pretty good on me! The only reason I’ve not bought it is because I’m on a one year makeup ban expiring next August. I’m South Indian, neutral to cool undertones, between NC40 and NC45 in the fall/winter. I really like it and if it’s not limited edition, it’ll probably be my first post-ban purchase. The ban is great for my day to day makeup though, I’m rediscovering treasures I never knew I had!

Maria Avatar

This color is beautiful. Im a NC 45 in MAC and a Warn Tan in bare minerals. This looks just like MAC Siss lipstick, which I cannot live without. Definelty a nude color for us bronzed chicks.

Maeve Avatar

I hate nudes. I think they’re disgusting in general. But this color is just gross, and definitely not worth 30 bucks. I’d rather buy something from Chanel.

sidnacglitz Avatar

What a disappointment for such an expensive lipstick from a high end brand. I can apply a light concealer to my lips and acheive the same effect. Tisk tisk to D&G, boo to their product development team.

Miss R Avatar

It is a beautiful colour (for me), though… I have been thinking lately about buying a caramel coloured lipstick, and this one lookks perfect. It’s a pity I can’t buy D&G where I live.

Lucy Avatar

I think I know exactly what you mean about the green. I can swear that some shades bring out ‘greenish’ tones in my complexion. Can anyone explain this? Does it have to do with an olive undertone???

bella Avatar

I’ve had a lipstick that looks prett similar, Bare from Make Up Store, and it’s pretty much scared me off of nudes, which is sad because I love the look generally! Makes me think I should try again, although not with this shade 😀

Anyone got recommendations for good nudes for pale skin and pigmented lips? I’d much appreciate it! 🙂

knownever Avatar

It seems like this color working might depend more on what the natural color of your lips is than your overall skin tone because I could see it being a shade that reacts very differently based on what color it goes on over.
