Do you use any natural or "household" items in your beauty regimen?

Do you use any natural or “household” items in your beauty regimen? Like sugar for scrubs? Oil for makeup remover?

I have used sugar to exfoliate my lips, olive oil to remove my makeup (and in a pinch, I will rummage through anyone’s cabinet for this if I need to remove my makeup!), and I have also done an aspirin mask a few times.  I can’t think of anything else, though!

Thanks to Amber for today’s question!

Red food coloring! If I can’t find my lip stain, I dab a little bit of red food coloring onto a Q-Tip and apply it to the inner part of my lips as a makeshift lip stain. I don’t use a whole lot, I just dab on just enough to get a bit of color and use a sheer gloss over for finishing.

God, so much lol! Sugar, olive oil, baking soda, apple cider vinegar, oatmeal, bananas, etc., all have appeared in my bathroom at some point. I make my own sugar scrub for the bath all the time.

I use olive oil or grapeseed oil to remove my make-up, too! And I’ve started to use honey as a face mask. I use shea butter as a body moisturizer, mixed with one of the above oils when I want it to be less thick.

Shea butter is super cheap to buy on Amazon and it’s an amazing moisturizer! I look for the raw, unrefined version.

Toothpaste on pimples, also visine to reduce reddness of a zit. I also use it as a mixing medium or to revamp dried out gel liner.Olive oil and vaseline both make great makeup removers. Vaseline also works as lip balm, hand cream, or lipgloss. I’ve also created my own brush cleanser ala enkore’s method. I can’t remember what all was in it. And I use rubbing alcohal to depot eyeshadows.

I use apple cider vinegar for a hair rinse to give it shine 2x a month. And yogurt and honey make a great moisturizing hair mask for curls. 😉

I use olive oil as a overnight deep conditioner for my hair – it’s the only thing that really works well and doesn’t make my hair heavy and greasy afterwards.

Yep! The number of natural/household items actually outweigh my store-bought products when it comes to skin care. Grapeseed oil to remove makeup and moisturize, lemon juice to tone, honey as a mask, oil and sugar for a scrub.

For some reason or another, I’m not 100% comfortable putting things on my skin as skincare if I don’t really know what’s in it. I’m probably just not very well informed. But then again, makeup has tons of foreign (to me) ingredients…

I’ve used Olive oil to remove make up before, I’ve even used my BBW kitchen lemon hand soap on my face in desperation when our only bathroom was occupied. I would love to make my own salt scrubs but somehow I haven’t found a recipe I like. My biggest multi-purpose item is Dr. Bronner’s. I discovered it in college and haven’t looked back. I mean I use that stuff for everything.

I prefer rose water or orange flower water to any commercial toner and if I need soemthing astringent, I’ll often try Witch Hazel before anything else.

Baking soda as a shampoo and as a skin exfoliant.

Coconut Oil on my hair pre-shampoo or if I’m going out in the sun/water all day.

Avocados mashed up and applied to my skin & hair.

Raw honey used on cleansed skin as a mask/exfoliator. Has to be RAW.

I use a mixture of powdered aspirin and neosporin for spot treatments on zits. I also use a yogurt/honey/olive oil mask twice a week on my hair.

Yes, often whenever i have the time. These are beauty routines i’ve picked up from my various travels:
1. Lemon/Lime juice rubbed on skin to remove a tan
2. Deep cleansing mask of fullers earth + sandalwood powder + gramflour + rose petal water
3. Anti blemish cleanser gram flour + turmeric
4. Masque of egg white for skin tightening
5. Applying Olive/Seasame/Almond/Coconut oil to hair for extra shine
6. Hair conditioner of mashed bananas
7. Face moisturiser of organic honey
8. Crushed olives + pomegrante as body exfoliator
9. Olive oil to remove make-up
10. Olive oil applied all over body as an intensive moisturiser for dry skin
11. Sliced cucumbers on eyelids to refresh eyes
12. Soaked n chilled tea bags to cure puffy eyes

Sure loads of household beauty masks..some of the best grated apple+ crushed oats–gr8 scrub, yoghurt n cucumber to take off tan due to sun, olive oil+egg+mayo–super hair conditioner, milk with pinch of turmeric for glowing complexion, fresh butter for softer lips and so many more :)…its the cosmetic world that has me bewildered 🙁

I mix sugar in with my cleanser or body wash for exfoliating. Olive oil as a makeup remover or to moisturize very dry areas, sometimes I put a little in the ends of my curly hair. I use diluted raw honey as a scalp treatment for my stubborn dermatitis. Milk of magnesia as an amazing foundation primer when I am very oily.

Natalie Avatar

I like to use lemon juice, honey, and sugar as a face & body scrub a few times per week. It makes my skin feel really soft and smooth. Baking soda is great for teeth whitening. And I use extra virgin olive oil to remove makeup everyday as well!

Ummmh…mostly I will use olive oil for a deep hair treatment if I am out of my fav hair (overnight) oil. I have done a mix of things for a mask that I got off line – had pumpkin and something I cannot remember now to give it some grit – cornmeal maybe. It was a two part one that you finished off with aspirin dissolved in something to give you the salicylic acid. But for the most part, I have enough product laying around that I need to use up. If I really keep cleaning house out and not stock piling more – I could see myself using some more self make home concoctions. I know the lady who cuts my hair swears by olive oil for hair treatment as well as cuticle treatment. I tend to like something that smells nicer to put on my nails to hydrate them because I do it about 4-8 times a day.

Mariella Avatar

I’ve also used aspirin (in a “mask” and as a scrub) as well as baking soda for a scrub. I also tried that milk of magnesia “primer/mattifier” a few summers ago. It actually wasn’t to bad.

Kathy Avatar

Olive oil as a makeup remover – I still use that. I also used it as a moisturizer before I found Oxyderm. My face was always soft and no zits!

Devi Avatar

I use some sort of natural item everyday! Sugar and olive oil the most though. I use sugar as a physical exfoliant in the shower everyday. And because I have extremely dry hair, I massage olive oil into my scalp and leave it there for half an hour before washing my hair. It does some serious magic. I also do a lot of DIY masks involving honey, yogurt, banana, lemon etc. Sometimes I feel the natural stuff works better. SOMETIMES.

What does an aspiring mask do? What do you do, smash it up with water?

I once did an egg mask when I was a kid. I saw it on TV haha! That’s about it though.

Aspirin is an anti inflammatory drug, like ibuprofen. if you crush it and mix it with a binder to make it stick the aspirin will put out the fire in any breakouts. A very old trick! Can be used on just one pimple continuously in emergencies, like that huge zit on your nose Friday morning and a big do Saturday night? My Granny was doing this in the thirties.

Katt Avatar

Lots! Apple cider vinegar as a toner, sugar as a scrub for lips, face and body, eggs and sigar face mask, cucumber to get rid of under eye baggies, lemon juice to brighten hair, banana/avocado face masks… some times cheap and natural is just the best 🙂

Nichole Avatar

Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water as a toner.
Aspirin dissolved in witch hazel used as a spot treatment or toner.

Amber Avatar

I usually use olive oil to deep clean brushes and vaseline on lips and hands and feet but I am definitely going to try all the new things everyone has mentioned!

Rowena Avatar

Tons!
Sugar for exfoliating
Apple Cider vinegar for a hair rinse
Olive oil for a deep conditioner
Castor oil to remove eye makeup

Also…When I have grapes on hand, I’ll slice one in half, rub it on my face and let it sit for a few minutes before washing with my usual cleanser….the fruit acids are a great gentle exfoliant! (apples, pears, strawberries work great too, I just like the conveniece of grapes)

Egg mask for the hair, makes it mega soft! Coconut oil on the ends of my hair for deep moisturizing. Apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse. Lemon juice to naturally lighten my hair in the summer, although it makes it quite dry :/

Montrese Avatar

I’ve used baking soda to brush my teeth, mixed up an avocado, lemon juice, & olive oil hair mask, an aspirin & honey face mask & many many more!! Lol

Lena Avatar

I always use sunscreen in my foundation 1- to lighten it in winter 2- makes it last longer 3- makes my super watery foundations denser/easier to apply! I’m always trying some crazy household products to get rid of zits, lemon, aspirin other things i cant think of!

Margie Avatar

I use low-fat “quark” mixed with honey as a face mask all the time. “Quark” is a dairy product which I have never found in the US. There isnt even a translation for it but I guess this might be interesting for all the Germans on here 😉

Deb Avatar

I definitely do sugar lip scrubs, but I have never tried olive oil as a makeup remover! There have been times where this would have helped a lot, I will remember it!

Shelby Avatar

Apple Cider Vinegar rinse for my hair whenever it starts to feel dull/gunky. I also find it helps with dandruff!

Honey, Nutmeg, Cinnamon face mask

Witch Hazel for my toner

Danielle Avatar

i use olive oil to take my foundation off, an olive oil/sugar scrub, and sea salt/water to scrunch my hair. sometimes i’ll use an asprin and honey mask, and i`ve also just recently used an egg yolk, olive oil & honey hair mask. and i make my own brush cleanser. i love diy stuff!

Mina Avatar

i have used yogurt for my undereye circles, or all over my face to calm it down. made a mask (yogurt, honey, oatmeal, and lemon) for my crazy breakout moments. olive oil or shea butter for my dry rashes in the winter. and lemon again if i have any acne scarring.

i love using natural products and i hate seeing advertisements for products that say “includes shea butter” or “contains oatmeal!” to grab you in, but you already have those products at home and 100% pure with no chemicals added!

I use my Greek grandma’s tricks! I use a lemon/sugar face scrub which i keep in the fridge to cool before applying to my face. I also use a face mask of greek yogurt/honey/dry mint. It leaves my skin feeling so smooth and fresh! I also use toothpaste on my occassional blemishes/pimples.

Lauren Avatar

This may be odd but I use lestoil to clean my makeup brushes, I learned it from my art teacher in high school. It cleans the brush without harming the bristles… plus it keeps my face from breaking out (and several brush cleansers have broken me out in the past). I also strangely love the smell of lestoil so it is kind of a win-win!

Ashley Avatar

I’ve used EVOO and Vaseline to remove makeup. I’ve used honey, yogurt, oats, and again EVOO to cleanse. I’ve also used those first three as masks and the EVOO as a moisturizer. I’ve used sugar to exfoliate.

And All. Ruined. My. Face. lol. Natural remedies for me just do not work out well. I’ve tried a crapload of oils, all caused irritation of some sort. I’d use oils to remove eye makeup again if I absolutely needed something, but I usually find they just cloud up my eyes and cause some irritation.

I also tried no-poo with baking soda and vinegar. Did not work that well. For both my hair and skin (face/body), I’ve found that not actually doing something and just leaving it alone, and just letting water run over the skin/hair as I shower, works best.

Lark Avatar

Lemon juice to dry out a bad zit; it also disinfects somewhat. Tea bags on puffy eyes. Really desperate? Sharpie marker eye liner. Comes in great colors! And vegetable oil to remove it. And in real Make up ER beet juice as lipstain. Doesn’t last that long but gets people to try beats. They’re really good!

luxlux Avatar

oh my gosh, OBSESSED with baking soda as a tooth-whitener. nothing works like it for instant results. i also rather love vinegar to deep-cleanse the dry shampoo and leave-in products out of my hair. and rosewater as a toner, coconut oil once in a while as a conditioner (especially after colouring). i’ve never tried making sugar scrub before, but after reading all the replies i think i will!
