Dior Trafalgar (876) 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Dior Trafalgar (876) 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette
Dior Trafalgar (876) 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette ($60.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a mix of pinks, golds, and plums. It’s one of the five new (and permanent) variations added to the 5 Couleurs range. It was a lot better than Pied de Poule, so my experience with the range is mixed (I only bought two, and I don’t have plans to buy others at this time) but consistent with my experience using Dior’s eyeshadow palettes in general. Some are amazing, some are completely and utter disappointments, and some are in-between. Trafalgar didn’t have any major misses; all five shades had fairly good pigmentation, wore well without fall out or fading issues, and were easy enough to use.
Trafalgar #1 is a light, warm-toned pink with a frosted finish. It had decent color payoff, and the texture was fairly soft but a little powdery/dry. It wore well for eight hours before fading on me. MAC Eggplant Blend #1 (LE) is darker, less shimmery. Ulta Pink (P, $10.00) is smoother. Tarina Tarantino Violet Storm #2 (LE) is lighter. MAC A Party of Pastels #2 (P, $21.00) is similar. Too Faced Coquet (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Kat Von D Instaglam (LE) is similar. MAC Invincible Light (LE, $21.00) is similar. bareMinerals Glitterati (LE) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Trafalgar #2 is an iridescent, pink and gold-tinged white–almost like a duochrome (but it is fairly subtle) that has a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation that applied well enough and was easy to blend. It lasted well for seven and a half hours before I saw fading. Kat Von D Lunar Lights (P) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Ice Queen #1 (P) is cooler-toned. Dior Golden Snow #1 (LE) is less pink. MAC Winterscape (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Solar White (LE, $15.00) is warmer. Make Up For Ever #940 Star Powder (P, $20.00) is slightly darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Trafalgar #3 is a rich, brightenred red-berry with warm, orange-red undertones and a pearly sheen. It had fantastic color payoff that went on smoothly and evenly. I was really surprised at how lovely this shade was, and it really made me wonder why the satin/matte finishes in Pied de Poule were so poor in comparison. On me, the color stayed true for eight and a half hours before creasing. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #2 (LE) is more orange, more muted. MAC Crimson Tryst (LE, $15.00) is darker. MAC Cranberry (P, $15.00) is darker. Le Metier de Beaute Fire Lily (P, $30.00) is darker, more shimmery, redder. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Trafalgar #4 is a muted, medium-dark gold with warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had good pigmentation that went on fairly evenly, which wore well for eight hours. MAC My Fantasy (LE, $15.00) is lighter, cooler-toned. LORAC Navy #4 (LE) is darker. theBalm #41 (P, $6.50) is lighter. Makeup Geek Bleached Blonde (P, $5.99) is warmer. Sleek MakeUP Meet in Madrid (LE, $9.99) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Strike (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery. bareMinerals Kudos (LE) is cooler-toned, less yellow/gold. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Trafalgar #5 is a dark, burgundy brown with soft, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had excellent color payoff with a soft, blendable texture that was just a smidgen dry. The color didn’t show any fading or creasing until after eight and a half hours of wear. NARS Subra (P, $29.00) is darker.Too Faced Soiree (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Enchanted #4 (LE) is darker. Inglot #423 (P, $6.00) is slightly browner. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I like that colour in the middle!
It is the star!
Looks like it would make a great blush as well! 🙂
That’s a gorgeous look you’ve made, Christine. I will save it for future reference. When fall comes in…
Thank you, Marieke! xo
The Jewel of the Collection!
I love Trafalgar. And the look you created is stunning. I shall have to mimic it although my eyelid is not nearly as wonderfully large as yours.
I own 6 Dior quint palettes, used to own 8 but I tossed (gasp!) out 2 because I’d ordered them online (prior to your invaluable website) and they were beyond powdery!!
It is a problem that Dior has and evidently does not mind. Perhaps some shades/pigmentation create the dust debris no matter what is tried, but the company would sell much more if a gorgeous-looking quint performed well.
Dear Daughter says I am more of a Dior gal (blonde hair-blue eyes) than a Chanel female and I think she is right. But with Chanel I rarely find a quad that has problems with texture and overall performance.
Maybe Dior WANTS us to come into the store and stand at the counter and become mesmerized and BUY!!
They put together some beautiful combinations – I am always intrigued when I see promo photos but know in my heart that they are frustrating to try because sometimes they’re great… sometimes they’re awful.
Interesting combination of shadows. I like the middle shadow, but it reminds me very much of MAC cranberry which it a tried and true shadow in my custom MAC palette.
It’s definitely like Cranberry’s brighter, redder sister.
Your rich brown eyes make it look so easy to wear red/orange shades! Color me jealous! This is a gorgeous look and a solid review. Thanks!
My pleasure, Lydia!
Thank you!
OMG so beautiful, combination of colors is amazing. I am buying mainly for the main color. Thank you Christine for the review.
No prob, Oksana! Enjoy your palette when you get it!
Christine,
Can you explain how you applied the colors?
#4 (inner lid), #3 (middle of lid), #5 (crease), #2 (brow bone/inner tear duct)
It’s lovely! I’m always afraid reddish colors will make me look like I’ve been crying or something.
This is an odd color combination to me but I love how you put them together. The middle shade and the deep brown are gorgeous! I need to find dupes lol
It is an interesting combination! I find it harder to incorporate all of the shades – more of a 2-3 at a time palette.
Meh… it’s not for me 🙁
Lucky for your wallet!
what fabulous palette 🙂 # 3 is beautifulllll 🙂
not palettes but i do want to pick DIOR cream shadows 🙂
your eye looks are pretty
Aw, thanks Rashmi!
This one is nice!
Will you be indulging?
I think so, this is a good palette, and my Bleu de Paris palette needs a friend! 😉
On another note I always have a hard time signing in, and I don’t know why!
Could you share a little info on what you mean by a hard time? If it’s the issue I think it is, we’re working on it, but if it’s something new, possibly not, lol! Sorry 🙁
It’s ok..i sign in and my name is on the top, but when I click on the heading it says login again, and I have to do it five times or so for it to go through. Thx for the reply!
I love the red one. what a wonderful colour. The plummy brown is also a stunner. This is a maybe on my ever growing list. I will play with it at the Dior counter next time I’m in a department store or in Sephora.
Keep me posted if it comes home with you, Helene!
I like what you did with this palette. It looks beautiful on you.
Thanks a lot, Valerie!
I’m sooooo lusting over this palette. *sigh*
It is pretty!
Hi Christine 🙂 This looks so pretty! While I’m sure this palette will work for a range of skin tones, etc., is there any particular skin tone/eye colour that you see this working particularly well for?
Green eyes are usually brought out by plummy shades, but I think anyone could wear this.
It’s hard not to get sucked into this because of #3! But really, that’s the shade I want here. Too bad it’s not sold as a single 🙁
Aww! I can totally understand, though. It is hard to resist, even if it’s one shade!
This is gorgeous, especially the shade in the middle!
Agreed!
I was really curious how you found this one because I checked them out after your review of Pied. I thought the same about Pied but purchased Trafalgar before this review. The colors aren’t super pigmented, but I loved the colors and got it. I got the Estée Lauder eye primer, which I think is a little less cakey or whatever than the MAC paintpots and it definitely intensifies the colors. The sales associate said to use the reddish one in the middle of the quint in the crease ( you know sideways V to smoke it) then you can also put some in the inner lid corner with the gold in center. She recommended then taking the plummy brown and going over the reddish one to smoke it out plus mute the reddish some. If I had blue or green eyes, I’d be going nuts with that reddish, but for my brown eyes, I’m muting it down some. I’m liking the purchase and can’t wait for the rest of this collection to come out. The 796 looks amazing, hope it’s pigmented and buttery. Thx for review- I agree!
Primer will definitely help combat any small issues with this palette (because it’s not bad, but it’s not perfect!), thankfully! 🙂
Woah that red(!) and brown make this palette worth buying. Love the look you created as usual 🙂
Thanks, Carly!
I definitely think this one is the most ‘exciting’ in the range, because of that red, and I think the red itself looks really nice in your swatches, and the gorgoeous look you did! 🙂 If I were being picky (performance aside) I wouldn’t have gone for two pale frosty shades in this palette (the white and the pink). I feel like you could replace one with something else (maybe even a black/red ‘darkest’ shade) and the palette wouldn’t suffer for it!
True – it is a more “exciting” set of colors! I am honestly surprised that this one seems to be the most popular, as the redder shades are often considered harder to wear!
I agree that there’s no need for both of the lighter, frosty shades – they are redundant!
I don’t own any quints from Dior, this might be the first one! That berry shade really makes it quite unique though it looks very similar to MAC Cranberry to me.
Let me know if you end up getting it, Ankita!
That is a nice look you created Christine! 😀 I would buy the palette if only because of it lol. Now, it seems to me that the reddish shade is similar to Inglot’s 607, if someone could confirm that I would be very grateful!
Thank you, Monica!
I wish I knew. The sad thing is I *probably* have it somewhere here (I have bought many Inglot eyeshadows that I have never had a chance to photograph). 🙁
Thanks for the review Christine! I was playing with this palette at the store today, but luckily they were sold out so I couldn’t make a “splurge” purchase. Just curious, what are the two dior palettes you do own? We have similar colorings, so I’m curious to know. I’ve been wanted to buy a dior quint for a while now, but can never settle on which one to buy.
Hi Evelyn,
Of the new ones? I bought Trafalgar and Pied de Poule. I probably have two dozen quints from years past. The only ones I’ve loved, loved, LOVED were limited edition fall palettes… 2013 I think.
