How do you deal with oil/shine throughout the day?
How do you deal with oil/shine throughout the day? Share!
My skin has been fairly normal these days, and only occasionally getting drier around the cheeks/nose, so I don’t get too oily or shiny unless I wear a really dewy foundation from the start. So day-to-day, I don’t do anything, but for a more formal occasion, I would keep a pressed powder (Guerlain Les Voilettes) in my bag! I’d also start with a primer (Hourglass Mineral Veil).

I quietly freak out and get annoyed, because I’ve yet to come up with a way of preventing it.
I have dry skin, but my nose does get shiny throughout the day..so I use a primer underneath my makeup, and I blot with my MAC Select Sheer pressed powder as the day goes on.
I don’t. My skin is so dry and patchy these days that shine is the last thing I think about.
moisturize, blot face to get rid of oils (really helps slow the oxidation rate of foundation on me), prime, foundation, powder (but with a damp beauty blender into loose powder. no lie, when i use this method i actually stay shine free for the entire day), pack a pressed powder and a retractable kabuki brush and top up as/if necessary
Loose powder + damp sponge?! Must try!
Blot paper, blot paper, blot paper… *chants to infinity*
Seriously though I have THE oiliest skin and I live on a tropical island to top it all off… I set my make up with powder then throughout the rest of the day I blot. It’s the only thing that helps. Putting on more makeup when you are in this heat is really off-putting.
Palladio blotting paper+powder! I love that one side allows me to soak up oil while the other side is coated with powder that makes touch-up a breeze. I wouldn’t have to worry about it making a mess in my purse or weight it down, either. The best part? It’s very affordable. I urge you to try it, it comes in several shades including a translucent option (which I personally favor).
I keep hearing about this product but this is by far the best review. I’ll drag myself to Ulta tomorrow.
Yay! Hope it works for you. 🙂
I put a mattifying primer on before I put my makeup on which will hopefully keep most oil at bay but if I do get oily I use blotting paper and or powder.
Which primer do you use?!
I have three I really like: the hourglass one, becca poreless and clinique universal.
My skin is so dry, there are times I almost wish I had this problem… I’m actually on the prowl for a good, dewy foundation, in a shade that closely matches my skintone, and I’m even willing to go HE! I also have an absurd amount of highlighters, always chasing the elusive HG…
I’m currently grappling with that question. At the moment blotting papers and using oil resistant foundations and setting everything with powder… But sometimes that can end up looking too powdery and heavy. I’ve switched to using a lighter mineral foundation and I considering getting an extra pressed powder to use throughout the day.
I have not been wearing primer for the last 6 months and would probably only use it for a special occassion where I wanted my makeup to last for a long time. I have fairly normal skin –more towards dry in winter– and I typically do not touch up. On seriously hot days, I may dust a bit of Chantecaille HD perfecting powder or LMDB peau vierge anti-aging powder in my t-zone. These are my two preferred pressed powders.
Right now? Not very efficiently 🙁 My skin is in this in between phase between oily and dry and it’s just very confused, so it’ll get shiny but then be dry at the same time, so if I use mattifying powder – which is what I always did before – it will just emphasize every little flakey bit…
blot it off first with a blotting sheet. not picky about brand, they all do the same (i mostly grab the CVS brand) then i lightly dust Urban Decays Deslick powder over my nose and forehead. but only so lightly.
A light dusting of MAC Blot powder or Rimmel Stay Matte on my nose takes care of it. It’s summer and it’s hot and I wear sunscreen all the time, so my nose becomes oily as the day wears on but it’s the only area that’s a problem and this is only in the warmer months.
I produce a lot of oil. I use MACs Oil Control Lotion (not sure it does anything at all), and then throughout the day I use Sephora Blotting Films followed by MAC Blotting Powder.
Lots of MAC blotting powder and Starschmucks napkins, since I don’t often bother with foundation (too early, too lazy). When I get fully dolled up it’s Hourglass primer and Immaculate foundation, though. Immaculate doesn’t miss a trick.
My skin used to be very oily. The key is to not add too much product, because it just turns to a mess, and you will break out from it. Blotting papers are the answer. They were hard to find in the past but lots of companies make them now, thank goodness.
set my makeup with either rimmel stay matte powder or FoA Transluscent powder and I always keep blotting paper handy throughout the day.
I still have ridiculously oily skin for someone my age (38.) I really need to go back on Tazorac. Right now, everything I use is mattifying: Rimmel Stay Matte foundation (seriously the best mattifying foundation there is), Murad Mattifier SPF 15, plus a layer of Clean and Clear Acne Spot treatment all over my face for my zits. I blot during the day with blotting papers (using Boscia’s right now.) Um, I’m going outgrow this at some point, right???
I do have quite oily skin, so the first step to avoid shine throughout the day is to choose an oil free foundation! These days I really enjoy Perfection lumiere velvet by Channel. When the weather is too humid, I usually finish my makeup with a mattifying powder, such as All about Matt plus by Catrice. If I get a bit oily throughout the day, I touch up with my Bourjois Healthy mix powder!
This is the biggest issue with my makeup, I am forever battiling shine. I recently bought UD’s De-Slick mattifying powder compact and that helps keep my shine at bay, need to go out and buy some oil-absorbing face sheets too.
I use toner in the morning, moisturize, use a primer along with my founation and setting powder. I add setting powder when I see shine. I mostly just give up, nothing works, believe me I’ve tried just about everything.
Argh, oil is such a problem for me. If it’s especially hot or I really need my makeup to last, I do a setting spray sandwich – spray before foundation, and then again once my makeup is done. I like Urban Decay’s DeSlick setting spray for this. I find that this technique works better for me than primers, although I usually use those too. I also use a heavy-duty mattifying powder – Rimmel StayMatte is my favourite.
I have combination skin so my big problem about oily is T-zone , I use blotting papers(Palladio rice paper) and then pressed powder(Revlon colorstay pressed powder in translucent or MAC Select Sheer)
I have very oily skin and it’s so easy to look like a grease ball during the day. Honestly I use those toilet paper seat covers from work lol…thank god my face is transfer resistant or I will die.
I actually just bought Les Voilettes because of your review! I thought I didn’t need it, because I don’t have oily skin, but holywow does it make my face look amazing. It might replace my beloved Hourglass Ambient Light powders, that’s how much I’m loving it.
For blotting, just go to Starbucks and grab a bunch of their brown napkins. I grabbed a handful last time, cut them in half at home, and I’ve been using them since January and still have a ton left. They work just as well if not better than any blotting paper I’ve bought at Sephora.
Ahhh! So happy you love Les Voilettes!
I touch up my face with Too Faced Prime and Poreless powder lightly, but I don’t have to do that often because I use a pretty matte foundation plus I use the Too Faced powder to set my foundation and it holds up throughout the day.
I use blotting papers. NYX makes cheap ones. I’ve found that over powdering doesn’t really help a whole lot. Using blotting papers is more useful.
I swear my nose should be an OPEC country for all the oil it produces. Primers, oil absorbing powders, and blotting papers are lifesavers.
Lots of the time, I just don’t even bother thinking about it! I have oily skin year round, and I’m prone to blemishes on my cheeks & chin, and have slight dryness around my nose/ mouth/ eyes due to occasional dermatitis… It’s been worse! So I’m actually very thankful for my skin. I’m really thorough & consistent with my skin routine too; double cleanse, double tone, eye cream, serums, moisturiser. As for those pesky dry areas I’m loving vitamin A & D ointment, but it’s hard to use make up on/around afterwards.
I should probably use a primer everyday especially in summer, but I’m a little low-maintenance (AKA lazy!) in the mornings. I love trying new foundations, but my favourites for my oily skin are Chanel Perfection Lumière Velvet *genie in a bottle HG*, Marc Jacobs Genius Gel Foundation, and I love the Dior BB creams (tan & regular) for something lighter. They may all be expensive, but if that’s the price I have to pay…
My favourite finishing powders are the Hourglass ones. I don’t care which one I love them all! I don’t have Luminous Light or Mood Light so I can’t speak to those, but I’m sure they’re perfect too!
I also use a blotting papers sometimes, but generally forget to do so on the regular.
For my eye shadow (and lots of the time, even eye liner alone!), I need a primer. I like the UD Eden one best (nudey, slightly opaque). Sadly the NARS one does nothing for me! I also love Tarina Tarantino eye liners for their lasting power. Amazing.
I’ll have to try that Chanel foundation since you’re the second person to mention it! I can’t believe Nars Smudgeproof didn’t work for you!
Urgggg, This is life’s biggest obstacle for me… but just this past week I feel i have stumbled across a regimen that helps. My first thing is to exfoliate weekly I get a microdermabrasion done weekly because i do have enlarged pores and oily skin. I use MAC oil control lotion and then Becca mattifying primer (this is not a filler) so I use MAC prep and prime Line filler then i apply my foundation with a damp beauty blender. Another great tool is the airspun loose powder that you get from CVS or Walgreen ( i got this tip from makeup guru PatrickStarr) it really works. Then of course I willget shiny but instead of blotting papers i use the brown recyclable napkins from starbuck or au bon pain they just absorb your oils not your makeup ( i learned this useful tip from Kim K.’s MUA Mario D.) They work wonder and of course I keep MAC sheer select loose powder for touchups. I hope this may help some of you who suffers like I do!!!
Napkins from Starbucks… who would’ve known?!
Thorough dabbing with blotting papers followed by a light dusting of powder.
Thankfully, I usually don’t have a problem. But, just to be safe I have some blotting papers in my handbag. I really like the ones from Tatcha.
I use toner in the morning, followed by a lightweight moisturizer. If I am going out, I might wear a BB cream, or foundation (foundation less often in summer) so I prep with a primer. If I’m not doing anything special, I might just wear a powder. I keep blotting paper (I have some by e.l.f.) and powder in my purse to blot and freshen up mid-day. I’m waiting on the “miracle” product that could help me cut out some of these steps…lol. I have combination skin and the oily t-zone is much worse in summer.
Now that I am “more mature” I don’t really have that problem, but it used annoy me so much. I remember having to have a powder compact with me all the time. Unfortunately when you use the powder it doesn’t always work as well as it should.
I’m a greaseball an MAC’s blot powder is AMAZING. A dusting of it really works, and it doesn’t oxidize. Buy a shade deeper than what you would expect, because it runs pale. For example, I’m NC15 (one of the lightest foundation shades) but I use blot powder shade Medium.
I don’t really get much in the way of oil/shine, as I have very dry skin, but if it does pop up around my T zone, it’s usually by late enough in the afternoon that I just blot with a tissue and keep going!
If I get dry patches popping up, I find the best thing is to pat a little eye cream over the spot!
I have the same problem! I get super dry around the tip of my nose and the tops of my cheekbones! I can’t seem to pin point what I am doing wrong. If anything, I feel like I have been moisturizing more than ever before. I get really oily around my T-zone and I have found that the MUFE loose matte power works great dusted lightly over my normal face powder (L’oreal true match).
During my workday every time I use the bathroom I blot my face with the center of the seat cover. I just tear it out and blot! Weird but it works, and it’s large enough to have fresh paper for each part of my face. I drink a lot of water at my desk so I’m in there a lot lol. On the go I carry CVS brand blotting papers with me. I also use Coty Airspun powder to set my makeup. Just a TINY bit in the mornings keeps me pretty oil-free all day.
I have really oil skin. I start with a clean face. Then, I use lightweight, non-oily moisturizer; let it soak in. I use BareMinerals loose powder mineral veil, followed by BareMinerals loose powder foundation, and a light coat of setting powder. I stick with powdered and/or waterproof cosmetics.
I keep blotting papers in my purse to use during the day to absorb the oil without messing up my makeup.
If it’s a really special occasion and a really hot day, I use a mattefying primer first.
Primer in the morning before the foundation. I set with powder. I blot with, currently Chanel blotting paper when needed, if I need to blot at home I use tissues. I go through a lot of blotting paper as I have a really oily t-zone. I thought this would get better with age, so far it hasn’t.
I carry my Guerlain Les Voilettes pressed powder in my purse for touch ups.
I have super oily skin and I leave in Brazil, seriously, you can´t get worst than that. ahhaha
I always use a good primer under the foundation or bb cream, set with a fine powder (I like Maybelline Dream Matte, MAC Mineralize or YSL Radiant Powder) and carry with me in my purse MAC Blot Powder for touch ups through the day.
I’m more on the dry side but my t-zone gets pretty shiny. I just use a mattifying primer and make sure I set with a good powder to combat it. Luckily, I don’t really have to touch up throughout the day but I’m going to try blotting papers soon to see if they help
Starbucks napkins work very very well for blotting oil.
Prime: Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 — Something about this really keeps my shine at bay. It feels slightly tacky as you rub it in, which reminds me of Murad’s Oil Control. Plus, I’m getting sun protection.
Set: Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray — It really helps keep my makeup from wearing away. And the spray is so fine that my face is nicely misted, not drenched.
Touch-Up: Boscia Blotting Linens + Neutrogena Shine Control Pressed Powder — The best combination I’ve found so far.
