Clinique Vanilla Pop Lid Pop
Clinique Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a new, powder eyeshadow formula that is described as “silky” and “long-wearing” with “richly pigmented shades build, blend easily to desired level of intensity.” They have good color payoff but tend to sheer out on the lid, and there is a faded quality after application, almost like when you apply an eyeshadow damp and it dries down less intense. The texture varies from soft and powdery to dusty to smooth. If you like semi-sheer to semi-opaque wash of colors and take the time to really blend and buff each shade, you can get a really luminous finish out of them, but using them more heavily results in a drier texture that was visible on my lid. I get between six and seven hours of wear with this formula, and in my experience, it was a formula that was faster to fade (but I didn’t have creasing issues) than the average eyeshadow for me. They have a very “lived in” look to me applied; like the eyeshadows melt and fade against the lid, but they never look like they do in the pan on the lid without a white or colored base.
Clinique Vanilla Pop Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a soft, light cream with warm, yellow tones and a satin finish. The texture was slightly powdery and didn’t blend out as evenly as I would have liked to have seen. It had good color payoff and lasted for six hours on me before noticeably fading. Clinique Petal Pop Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a light-medium, yellowed pink with warm, golden shimmer. It had semi-opaque coverage, which I couldn’t get any more opaque than that as it didn’t stick well to bare skin due to the drier consistency (just didn’t seem to bind well to me). It wore for six hours on me before fading. Tarte Pixie (PiP, ) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Urban Decay X (DC, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Clinique Grape Pop Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark purple with subtle, warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was slightly dry to work with, and it tended to sheer out on the lid; I couldn’t get to look true-to-pan or have really opaque coverage. On me, it had faded after six and a half hours of wear. Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova #2 (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Guerlain Rose Barbare #2 (DC, ) is lighter (95% similar). Well, that’s a shame! 🙁
It was 🙁
Oh how sad! I was really looking forward to Petal and Grape, the swatches seemed so lovely. Definite skip. It’s too bad Clinique couldn’t pull off another hat trick with these Pop products.
I was a little worried about these 🙁
I think they look beautiful on your eye. It’s weird because the description on Sephora says “wash of sheer, vibrant color” and then “richly pigmented.” Confusing.
That is confusing! I went to Clinique for the description (I usually start at the brand’s site, then meander over to retailers to cross-reference, though if the brand doesn’t have it up, then retailer it is!).
I’m wondering if they neglected to mention you can use these wet? This formula in general across brands get’s more coverage when applied wet.
It’s certainly a possibly! They have some how-to tips on the site, but nothing about them damp!
I was excited for these because I love the blushes so much and the packaging is super cute! I’m surprised at the quality and since the colors aren’t all that unique, it will be a pass for me. I’d rather pick up more of their blushes!
Their blushes are still fab 😀 The texture of these is definitely less smooth/drier.
Thanks for the swatches and reviews Christine. They have really helped me decide that I don’t need any of these, which is good I can save my money.
No problem, Deidre!
I’s a shame about Petal Pop Lid Pop because the shade would have been epic! Thankfully i love my Sugarpill Kitten Parade.
Scratch these shades off my list to get.
Kitten Parade <3
Cocoa Pop is very pretty! It’s not unique though, but definitely pretty.
It is a nice shade!
That’s disappointing that the color pay off is not what I thought it would be. I thought I would really like these since I LOVE the cheek pops. At least that’s money saved.
I wanted to! They’re a lot softer/more powdery than the Cheek Pops.
Christine, are your eyelashes getting longer? They look very pretty 🙂
Nope, same lashes as always. Of all the beauty things, I could never do extensions or lash growth serums, so I’m stuck with the natural lashes I have 🙂 It’s probably just that I’m looking up a little and at an angle, so it’s an illusion.
Your full review confirms what I thought after seeing your sneak peek. I don’t need them. I think there’s a place on the makeup market for this type of mid-intensity eyeshadow, but the colors being so dupable, I already have a more pigmented version of each and every one of them.
Sadly so! I was really bummed by the wear.
Damn i was looking forward to purchasing the grape! Never mind.
Thank you so much Christine^^
No problem, Yuan!
Oh boy, these have some weak pigmentation and just look like “washes” of lid color. Although the sneak peek swatches indicated that this would likely be the case, this is still super disappointing!
I wish they didn’t fade so fast 🙁
I was really looking forward to Petal Pop, but with how you described them applying, wearing and looking on the lid… I think they’re a pass now. It’s a shame because that daisy design is just too darn cute. 🙁
They are cute in the pans, lol!
Really liked Cocoa Pop and was hoping for a good review. I think I will pass on these.
I was hoping these would be good!
Oh no 🙁 I’m ok if Clinique shadows aren’t super-pigmented like UD ones, because they’re known more for softer washes of color or a more “natural look”, but if the shadows fade, sheer out, and don’t stick well, that’s not a good sign. My oily lids tend to eat up shadows like these, even with primer. I’m so sad because the swatches are so pretty, and I love flower embossing. I would love to see Clinique release cheek pop highlighters. Do you think Petal Pop could be used as a highlighter or is it too shimmery?
My lids seem to “eat” these in a way – wish they didn’t get so faded so quickly!
I think it could work as a highlighter, though it is definitely larger shimmer than the Cheek Pops!
Grape Pop is a really pretty and interesting color, shame it doesn’t have more pigment to it. =(
I wish it did!
Too bad. Do you think primer would help? They may be good for those with a heavy hand? Not sure.
The colors looked so pretty.
Something with slight tackiness – more like a good base (think NYX Milk) than just a translucent primer (like UDPP).
I’m going to check out that Petal Pop color. I love the gold highlight!
Keep us posted, Kellly!
You should, it is a beautiful, rich eyeshadow that doesn’t need any base, is super easy to apply even with afinger and lasts all day on me, “A” rating in my book. It goes really well with 02 and/or 03, especially for summer looks, gorgeous combination.
How disappointing. Of course the colors Iiked the best performed the worst.
I was pleasantly surprised that the teal was one of the more pigmented shades, but the coverage and application of the blue was saddening!
Bummer. Petal and Grape pop looked promising in your initial swatches. I suppose it’s a secret blessing for me as the LAST thing I need to be doing right now is buying more eye shadows!
Silver lining 🙂
Yes – they do look very sheer on the eye Christine, although your eye look is lovely.
I have to say I am not a fan of these kinds of singles as most of these colours (if not all of them) live in my palettes which are much easier to open and use.
It’s a shame about the rating though, just when Clinique was becoming quite good.
Too much of a good thing, I guess! 🙁
My Cocoa and Petal arrived today, along with Clinique’s Rosy blush. I haven’t even opened the box yet 🙂 I’m glad I read this first. I’m going to play with different primers/bases before application. Thanks!
Let me know what you think after you’ve had a chance to play, Valerie!
Darn, they swatched so nicely! I am wondering if Grape Pop would work as all over wash for me. I find most purples too intense and pigmented for that sort of thing. Even though it’s not the best it might work to suit my laziness.
It might!
I’m a bit bummed by the lower rating, but I may just try Petal Pop out as a blush! It looks like it could pass as Becca’s now-discontinued Gypsy blush, which I unfortunately wasn’t able to get my hands on before they discontinued it.
I hope they’ll bring it back!
Hmmm – here I was thinking this might be the resurgence of Clinique as a cutting edge type of brand but this is really disappointing, especially in light of how excellent and well-received the Cheek Pops were. Even the shades I liked in this are so very dupe-able with better quality shadows.
Too many better formulas on the market, I think, especially in similar-feeling formulas!
That’s too bad about these. For this much, I expected better. Petal Pop looks lovely in the swatch. The closeup of Cocoa looks almost edible lol
lol!
What a shame! I love Petal Pop and Grape Pop but don’t want to waste my money on something that just sheers out without a white or coloured base. I have the Balm’s Take the Lid Off primer and Bare Minerals 5in1 candlelit peach, do you think they’ll work with those?
They might! I think the bareMinerals one might work better.
Cool, thanks ?!
I so wanted them to be intense colors 🙁 sad
🙁
Maybe these are meant mainly to be used for a sheer wash of a single color? Clinique’s eye shadows in general tend to run on the sheer/subtle side, I think. I was hoping they were going to do something more vibrant with these, though (if they did, it would help with shedding the old-fuddy-duddy image Clinique has acquired in recent years).
Their description is confusing, but they do use the term “richly pigmented” as their lead-in. They mention being able to “blend, build” intensity – which would suggest a buildable coverage, but starting off as “richly pigmented” was the confusing part – but either way, they lose intensity/don’t build-UP only sheer down.
It really is a shame! They look so pretty in the pan!
What a pity! I really wanted Petal to be good, I really like it.
I can see a market for these, I think a lot of people like sheerer eyeshadows. I’m not one of them, I prefere sheering out the more opaque ones, so my wallet is safe for now.
Wow, those truly bite bollocks, gotta say. Very disappointing. They obviously didn’t put much effort into these.
I wish they were better!
hm well i can’t say I’m surprised about the sheer wash since they seem similar to the blushes which i love. i wasn’t going to get any because i just prefer pans, but that vanilla shade is calling me for an inner corner h/l lol.
I actually don’t think they’re much like the blushes – they are much drier and not nearly as smooth!
These work much better applied with a damp brush or finger. It completely transforms the formula.
Thanks for the tip!
