Clinique Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a new, powder eyeshadow formula that is described as “silky” and “long-wearing” with “richly pigmented shades build, blend easily to desired level of intensity.” They have good color payoff but tend to sheer out on the lid, and there is a faded quality after application, almost like when you apply an eyeshadow damp and it dries down less intense. The texture varies from soft and powdery to dusty to smooth. If you like semi-sheer to semi-opaque wash of colors and take the time to really blend and buff each shade, you can get a really luminous finish out of them, but using them more heavily results in a drier texture that was visible on my lid. I get between six and seven hours of wear with this formula, and in my experience, it was a formula that was faster to fade (but I didn’t have creasing issues) than the average eyeshadow for me. They have a very “lived in” look to me applied; like the eyeshadows melt and fade against the lid, but they never look like they do in the pan on the lid without a white or colored base.

Clinique Vanilla Pop Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a soft, light cream with warm, yellow tones and a satin finish. The texture was slightly powdery and didn’t blend out as evenly as I would have liked to have seen. It had good color payoff and lasted for six hours on me before noticeably fading. Clinique Petal Pop Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a light-medium, yellowed pink with warm, golden shimmer. It had semi-opaque coverage, which I couldn’t get any more opaque than that as it didn’t stick well to bare skin due to the drier consistency (just didn’t seem to bind well to me). It wore for six hours on me before fading. Tarte Pixie (PiP, ) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Urban Decay X (DC, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Clinique Grape Pop Lid Pop ($17.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark purple with subtle, warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was slightly dry to work with, and it tended to sheer out on the lid; I couldn’t get to look true-to-pan or have really opaque coverage. On me, it had faded after six and a half hours of wear. Cle de Peau Champagne Supernova #2 (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Guerlain Rose Barbare #2 (DC, ) is lighter (95% similar). I think they look beautiful on your eye. It’s weird because the description on Sephora says “wash of sheer, vibrant color” and then “richly pigmented.” Confusing.

I was excited for these because I love the blushes so much and the packaging is super cute! I’m surprised at the quality and since the colors aren’t all that unique, it will be a pass for me. I’d rather pick up more of their blushes!

monica Avatar

That’s disappointing that the color pay off is not what I thought it would be. I thought I would really like these since I LOVE the cheek pops. At least that’s money saved.

Christine Avatar

Nope, same lashes as always. Of all the beauty things, I could never do extensions or lash growth serums, so I’m stuck with the natural lashes I have 🙂 It’s probably just that I’m looking up a little and at an angle, so it’s an illusion.

Your full review confirms what I thought after seeing your sneak peek. I don’t need them. I think there’s a place on the makeup market for this type of mid-intensity eyeshadow, but the colors being so dupable, I already have a more pigmented version of each and every one of them.

Oh no 🙁 I’m ok if Clinique shadows aren’t super-pigmented like UD ones, because they’re known more for softer washes of color or a more “natural look”, but if the shadows fade, sheer out, and don’t stick well, that’s not a good sign. My oily lids tend to eat up shadows like these, even with primer. I’m so sad because the swatches are so pretty, and I love flower embossing. I would love to see Clinique release cheek pop highlighters. Do you think Petal Pop could be used as a highlighter or is it too shimmery?

Jane Avatar

You should, it is a beautiful, rich eyeshadow that doesn’t need any base, is super easy to apply even with afinger and lasts all day on me, “A” rating in my book. It goes really well with 02 and/or 03, especially for summer looks, gorgeous combination.

Genevieve Avatar

Yes – they do look very sheer on the eye Christine, although your eye look is lovely.
I have to say I am not a fan of these kinds of singles as most of these colours (if not all of them) live in my palettes which are much easier to open and use.
It’s a shame about the rating though, just when Clinique was becoming quite good.

My Cocoa and Petal arrived today, along with Clinique’s Rosy blush. I haven’t even opened the box yet 🙂 I’m glad I read this first. I’m going to play with different primers/bases before application. Thanks!

Alice Avatar

I’m a bit bummed by the lower rating, but I may just try Petal Pop out as a blush! It looks like it could pass as Becca’s now-discontinued Gypsy blush, which I unfortunately wasn’t able to get my hands on before they discontinued it.

Mariella Avatar

Hmmm – here I was thinking this might be the resurgence of Clinique as a cutting edge type of brand but this is really disappointing, especially in light of how excellent and well-received the Cheek Pops were. Even the shades I liked in this are so very dupe-able with better quality shadows.

Claire L Avatar

What a shame! I love Petal Pop and Grape Pop but don’t want to waste my money on something that just sheers out without a white or coloured base. I have the Balm’s Take the Lid Off primer and Bare Minerals 5in1 candlelit peach, do you think they’ll work with those?

Fran Avatar

Maybe these are meant mainly to be used for a sheer wash of a single color? Clinique’s eye shadows in general tend to run on the sheer/subtle side, I think. I was hoping they were going to do something more vibrant with these, though (if they did, it would help with shedding the old-fuddy-duddy image Clinique has acquired in recent years).

Christine Avatar

Their description is confusing, but they do use the term “richly pigmented” as their lead-in. They mention being able to “blend, build” intensity – which would suggest a buildable coverage, but starting off as “richly pigmented” was the confusing part – but either way, they lose intensity/don’t build-UP only sheer down.

anne Avatar

hm well i can’t say I’m surprised about the sheer wash since they seem similar to the blushes which i love. i wasn’t going to get any because i just prefer pans, but that vanilla shade is calling me for an inner corner h/l lol.
