Cle de Peau Golden Lace (313) Eyeshadow Quad ($55.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a set of warmer neutrals. The strength of Cle de Peau’s eyeshadow formula is in how soft, silky, and smooth they typically are, so they blend out easily and sit nicely on the eyelid without looking powdery or dusty. They also seem to “melt” against the skin after an hour for a really luminous sheen. This one has a sparkly shade in it, which gave me some trouble as it was looser and had a little fall out, but all told, the four shades were easy to apply, were fairly pigmented, and lasted seven to eight hours.

Note: I purchased the refill pan only without the compact, and should you want the compact, it will run you $25 on top of the $55 price. I’m not really into packaging these days, so I prefer to pop a magnet on the back and store in freestyle palettes (like Z Palettes).

Golden Lace #1 is a medium-dark plum with warm undertones and lighter purple shimmer that gives it a pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery consistency that blended out well and didn’t look dry on the skin. This shade wore well for eight hours before fading. Dior Olympe (871) (LE, $31.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Stila Plum (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Dior Capital of Light #5 (LE, ) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Make Up For Ever S832 Ash Plum (DC, $21.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Show Plum Love (LE, ) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Sephora Girlish Appeal (LE, ) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse #6 (LE, ) is cooler (90% similar). Golden Lace #2 is a slightly muted, medium orange within brown tones and a frosted sheen. It had nice color payoff with a soft, smooth, and blendable consistency that applied well to the skin. This shade stayed on for eight hours before fading. Sephora Fall Leaves (DC, $10.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Tisse Vendome #3 (PiP, ) is brighter (90% similar). MAC Mortal #2 (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). NARS St-Paul-de-Vence (Left) (DC, $25.00) is brighter (90% similar). Gucci Beauty Autumn Fire #1 (DC, ) is warmer (85% similar). Golden Lace #3 is a light, peachy-beige with warm undertones and a sparkling finish. There is fine sparkle in this shade, which didn’t seem to make it rough or gritty, but the texture had a slightly looser consistency compared to other shades, which made it prone to sheering out on the skin. It had semi-opaque coverage that wasn’t buildable to opaque coverage without a primer to adhere to. It lasted for seven and a half hours with slight fall out. Make Up For Ever D716 Crystalline Papaya (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy (DC, $19.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Tarte Glitter Glue (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky #2 (PiP, ) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Just Gleaming (PiP, $20.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Sephora Wish (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Chanel Tisse Rivoli #2 (PiP, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Anastasia Vermeer (P, $12.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Golden Lace #4 is a light-medium, yellow gold with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had stronger yellow tones than a true gold, which gave it a slightly “cooler” appearance compared to many golds. I think that actually helps it work with this palette, which runs pretty warm otherwise. The texture was silky and smooth, which made blending an easy job, and the color pigmentation was opaque. This shade wore well for eight hours before creasing slightly. Tarte Mermaid (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Praline (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). ColourPop Butter Cake (PiP, $4.50) is more shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Persona Goal Digger (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Fool's Gold (LE, $17.00) is darker (95% similar). NARS Studly (LE, $29.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). ColourPop Keep It PG (PiP, $4.50) is more shimmery (95% similar). Anastasia 10K (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). From back when you were wearing this quad during a bunch of your photos of other products, I loved this eyeshadow look! Anxiously anticipated its review, and now comes the verdict. I still love this color combo, but am left wondering whether a MUFE trio + one I already own from UD would perhaps be a wiser course? And, no, I definitely would NOT be buying its $25 compact, LoL!

Christine Avatar

lol! I can’t bring myself to pay for packaging if you separate the two for me. I’d rather Cle de Peau offer refills than only in a compact, because their products are pricey! I could see grabbing one of the eyeshadow compacts for travel if you travel really light, but at least you could just buy one, rather than one for each shade!

As stunning as they are to look at and hold, I don’t think the Cle de Peau shadows are really for me. My oily lids tend to “eat” the soft color up, even with primer. I got Stardust but exchanged it for Satin Moon, which is better, but not worth the high price IMO. I like my shadows pigmented and distinct (like UD), but if you like softer, more luminous washes of color that blend together, then they might appeal to you.

Katherine T. Avatar

Yes, even with primer, I have trouble with the softer, sheerer formulas because my lids just eat them up. I had to return a Guerlain quad, a Burberry quad, a Cle de Peau one, the new Cover Girl Tru Naked kit, and almost all DS shadows . They look faded on my lids (even when freshly applied), blend away into nothing, or 4 colors blend into 1, so I’m paying $50 for 1 color 🙁 The only good thing about having oily lids is my lids are in very good shape for +40, because they’re well conditioned with a lot of natural skin oil — hey have to look on the bright side, when I end up with raccoon eyes LOL

Really pretty! But those shades are so common now-a-days that a C+ on one of them is kind of a let-down. For the price and the commonness of those colors, they should be hitting it outta the park.

I love this colour combination (reminds me of Guerlain Turnadot – or am I misremembering?) but it would need to perform really amazingly to tempt me into actually buying it.

Nicole Avatar

Pretty. But, not terribly unique. I feel like it should have an A at this price too. The other thing that I think steers me from Cle de Peau is that I can’t see it personally. Some things just can’t be done justice via a photo. I have been curious about Silver Eclipse though. That would be the one I would probably get at this point. How does CDP compare to Tom Ford’s formula in the wet to dry formula? any similarities?

Christine Avatar

It should! I think there’s no excusing anything that doesn’t stand out. I do wish they’d talk more about their formula in depth, because I feel like they are pretty light on claims (in either direction).

Tom Ford’s wet/dry formula is denser and a little firmer!

Genevieve Avatar

Although it is way too warm for me, it looks just beautiful on you Christine. The colour combinations are gorgeous. It’s a shame the brand added the sparkly shade as it pulled down the ratings by not being as good as the other shadows. And I don’t really think quad needed a sparkly shade anyway. However all these colours are easily dupable in many palettes that we own and the price tag is considerable for a quad.

Stacie Avatar

I love this combination of colors. They look great on your eye color (which is the same as mine – Yay!) I’ll probably skip this because of the hefty price tag.

Spring Avatar

I love this eyeshadow combo! Looks so pretty on you. I probably have a million dupes for all these shades, so I might try and make myself a mini-palette. 🙂

Cle de Peau’s Silky foundation & concealer are HG’s for me.
But for the price – CdP’s skin care, shadows, lippies, and blushes always seem to fail.
CdP’s mascara & eyeliners are superb but spendy though!

Bibi Avatar

I’ve tried CdP’s intensive eye contour cream, protective fortifying cream, intensive fortifying emulsion, & le sérum. ( I shop the duty free CdP store in the Bangkok airport alot.) Not wowed by any of them, Olay Regenerist is better, IMHO.
CdP’s lippies are nice colors but only last an hour on me. I do better with EL’s Pure Color lippies that last at least 4 hrs.
