China Glaze Ride the Waves Nail Lacquer
China Glaze Ride the Waves Nail Lacquer
China Glaze Ride the Waves Nail Lacquer ($6.49 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “dark ocean blue.” It’s a semi-sheer royal blue (not quite dark enough to be a navy blue, plus it’s brightened) with what appears to be a jelly finish. Illamasqua Force is much darker, almost purple-tinged. China Glaze Blue YEar’s Eve is more opaque and shimmery. Deborah Lippmann I Know What Boys Like is much, much darker. China Glaze Blue Iguana has shimmer and is lighter. Butter London Blagger is darker and opaque.
There’s definitely visible nail line, which is business-as-usual for a jelly finish. I swatched with two coats, and I did experiment with a third, but the nail line was still rather visible so if you wanted more opaque color, you’d have to use a base polish first. It has the lovely, squishy quality of jellies, though, but it absolutely needs a top coat to retain that shiny finish. Without a top coat, it dries down to a semi-matte finish, and it seemed to dry a bit faster than other shades in the collection. Application was also more on par with the quality I expect from China Glaze! Ride the Waves applied easily, evenly, and fluidly without bubbling or pooling along the sides. The formula wasn’t too thick or too thin. I typically get a week of wear out of China Glaze’s formula with no chipping but minor tip wear.

Like the colour, but don’t like the transparency at all.
Are you using a topcoat with this? Because this finish doesn’t seem semi-matte? Perhaps it’s just a trick of the light in the photo.
Oh and I love cushion-y look of jelly finishes!
@yellowlantern I show all swatches with a base + top coat 🙂 Except on the rare instance where I don’t do a top coat to show off the natural finish (e.g. a matte polish!).
What top coat do you use, Christine? 🙂
@lucklesscinnamon Zoya Armor!
Beautiful color, but don’t like the finish. Blagger from BL is one of my fav polishes. LOVE that shade of blue.
Hmm. Generally I love jellies, I just don’t know whether I like them in this sort of color. Looks like a nice formula though.
this is the perfect shade of royal blue. it’s gorgeous! i love the finish, too. gives it a supa fresh an juicy appearance which is unique for a blue, imo
I love the colour but don’t care for its transparency. It might be fabulous on top of a white creme, though…
Love the color of this! perfect for that transiton blue colour from summer to fall.
This looks like an exact dupe of Color Club’s Chelsea Girl (which I’m wearing right now, actually). It also has a jelly finish and is pretty sheer.
I’m confused; how did this get an A rating when it’s so see-through?
Jellies are sheerer, not opaque 🙂
Is this a dupe for Bleu Majorelle – YSL nail laquer? In less opaque
@bettinamartin9 I don’t have that shade to compare 🙁
Gorgeous, gorgeous blue. Too bright for what I like to wear on my nails (I go for more subtle/professional colors), but I’d love it on someone else!
I don’t have experience with jellies — what do you mean by squishy? during application, or are they actually rubbery once dry?
