Charlotte Tilbury The Rebel Eyeshadow Quad Review & Swatches (2020)
The Rebel (2020)
Charlotte Tilbury The Rebel (2020) Eyeshadow Quad ($53.00 for 0.18 oz.) is a new, permanent quad that replaces the original “The Rebel” quad (totally different color story!). The formula was more comparable to the recent 12-pan palettes and a nice upgrade from the original quad formula. The shimmers were smoother, creamier, and richer overall with better coverage and adherence. All four shades were pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing with a smidgen of fallout from the fourth shade, which was the “worst” performer.
I don’t think they should have called it “The Rebel,” just discontinued the original The Rebel and gave this one a new name, because while I like the quality and find the formula easier to work with, so I’m happy to see it make an appearance in the quad line-up… it’s just too different from the original!

The Rebel (2020) #1
The Rebel (2020) #1 is a rich, medium-dark gold with moderate, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It had an incredibly smooth, lightly creamy texture that was dense without being thick or too firmly pressed into the pan. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out well. It lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

The Rebel (2020) #2
The Rebel (2020) #2 is a smoky, olive green with muted, warm undertones and a soft, metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had rich pigmentation in one layer, which adhered evenly to my lid and blended out nicely along the edges. The texture was soft without being powdery, but it wasn’t too firmly-pressed into the pan either. It wore well for eight hours before I noticed fading.

The Rebel (2020) #3
The Rebel (2020) #3 is a light-medium, olive green with strong, warm undertones and golden shimmer throughout. It had opaque color payoff that applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of product. The texture was smooth, lightly creamy without being too dense or too thick, so it was easy to pick up with a brush and still went on evenly to my lid. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before I noticed signs of fading.

The Rebel (2020) #4
The Rebel (2020) #4 is a medium-dark brown with muted, warm olive undertones and flecks of sparkle throughout. The underlying, more matte finish seemed to have enough substance that some of the sparkle actually translated when applied to bare skin, but it was more matte than it was a real sparkly shade. The pigmentation was opaque, while the texture felt soft and velvety without being too powdery (nor too firmly-pressed into the pan). It lasted well for eight hours before fading a bit and had a smidgen of fallout over time.

Charlotte finally hooked me with this glorious olive quad! I’ve got a weakness for these sorts of tones as it is, but this is a winner in my book.
As an aside, I also wish that this had been given its own distinct name. There is NOTHING about this quad that looks “rebellious” in any way, shape or form. And I’d have loved to still have the opportunity to purchase the very teal OG The Rebel, too, but in this formula.
Nancy , these look custom made for your eye color:)
I love these gorgeous golden tigers eye colors.
Oh, I love the way this looks, & an A! I think this would pair nicely with the mattes in my Stars in your Eyes palette. I’m going to check this one out. I don’t have any of these colors.
Ah, I’ve been WAITING for this review! This will be my first CT eyeshadow quad. I think it’s beautiful and I must have it! (Although I will be waiting for the spring Sephora Rouge Discount to nab it. ?)
I really like these shades, but I agree with you about the name. This is nothing like the original.
Finally olive greens! I would have loved for just an olive green in all the orange/ rust colors. The mini for ND tried. I will most likely get this. It will go excellent with my ND gold palette.
These are such beautiful shades, but olives don’t work well enough on me to justify a purchase. Good news for my wallet!
I really wanted a bad review on this. The “A” is making it harder to stick to my no-buy. ?
This stunning quad deserves its own name, I agree. It is beautiful and is exactly my kind of shades. I feel a purchase coming on…….
Glorious Quad! I can have docens of olives tones in my collection. I was just waiting for one for Charlotte. Thanks for this review
I have dupes for three out of four, and I’m sure I have a good gold similar enough if I want to dupe all four in the quad.
I seem to remember liking the original The Rebel, though I never got around to purchase it and I find it annoying that they use the same name on a new quad.
If I’m not mistaken the changed the name of another quad from the original ones without changing anything, but maybe I’m mixing up my quads here.
I also think that the colours in this look too much alike to be interesting for me.
All of the above are good news for my low buy 🙂
I love this. I’ve never been drawn in by CT til now – much like Nancy T, I feel kinda “hooked”. These are my kind of colours which probably explains why I’ve dupes for most of them and also why some of the dupes I don’t have are ones I’ve always wanted (the Sydney Grace shadows). If I can snag this near me, I am really likely to buy it.
Christine, I do have agree with you about the naming of this palette and how it makes for confusion. I just went to see if this was available locally at a Sephora near me and I can’t tell if the Rebel palette they have is the old one or the new one (it looks like the new one but a few unfavourable reviews there have me thinking it might be the older one but I need to check out your photos of the older one to help me ascertain which one it might be).
I know on the US site that Sephora removed the older version with its photos and updated with the new photo, so I hope they would have done the same for inventory, but you never know 🙁 This quad was released a few weeks ago, though.
Christine, I’ve since looked at your photos of the “old” The Rebel palette and see it’s not at all the same in terms of colours and the one showing on the Sephora site here is, indeed, the new one. Sadly, the 2 Sephora stores near me don’t carry it and I’m not willing to drive “out of my comfort zone” to check it out at the nearest one that does carry CT. I might order it (though a few less than favourable reviews at Sephora now have me demurring a bit) or I might wait til I’m in the vicinity of a Sephora that does carry it to get it there, after trying it for myself. As I said, I’ve dupes for all the colours so if I miss out on it, it’s not the end of the world.
It should be permanent, so there’s no reason to rush out!
Glad I purchased the original last year during the Nov Rouge Sale at Sephora. Just in time, because wow. They definitely should have given it another name.
