Chanel Western Light Le Vernis Nail Colour ($30.00 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is described as a “sophisticated shade of deep chocolate, burnished by a heart of pearly red.” It’s a deep, dark reddened brown with a dusting of reddish-burgundy shimmer. The shimmer is not the star here, so while visible at certain angles, gives it more of a reddened depth than sparkle.  China Glaze Midtown Magic is browner and has larger and more present shimmer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Au Chocolate is very similar in color but is a cream (no shimmer). Rescue Beauty Lounge Atame is a redder cream with no shimmer. MAC Gadabout Girl is slightly more burgundy and has no shimmer. Chanel Strong has a lot more of the red pearl, so it looks a bit redder/purpler in some lighting.

Chanel touts their lacquer as “long-wearing, high-shine, chip-resistant” while applying “evenly without streaking.” Western Light was fully opaque after two coats, and the consistency of the formula wasn’t too thick or too thin. It applied beautifully, evenly, and streak-free, just as Chanel describes.  I think more shimmer would have made this a more unique color, but as is, the shimmer tends to fade away and the color looks mostly like a cream finish–and there are a fair amount of creams available in shades near to this.  I usually get a week of wear with Chanel’s formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.

I love the new photo formats! Love that you’re giving us close and far away photos. Did you get a new camera? For some reason these look like they’re more detailed than I remember.

Same camera, same equipment, just arranged a bit differently 🙂 These are mostly experimental shots – seeing if certain photos are better/not and seeing how readers react (or don’t react). I’m not sure if the “faraway” shot is as helpful as I wanted it to be!

I really love the faraway shot. Super close swatches are great, but really how often are we (or other people) viewing our nails from an inch away? It’s nice to get a wider view, gives a better idea of the impression the polish makes to others.

(Christine, as a side note, I’m once again having to input my name and email every time I leave a comment. Is this a “feature”, a problem on my end, or is something wonky, do you know?)

As for the polish – eh. It’s okay. I’m not a fan of browns, and this just looks…ordinary.

I think it was working? It wasn’t working when other people reported it and then it started and now it isn’t. I’m on Chrome, version 25.0, tried on PC and Mac (same browser). It does seem to be working in Safari, though.

I’m glad you mentioned this BlueRacoon! I was having the same issue and thought it’s because we just got a new computer. While on our old laptop, yes it had my name and email info.

And not sure if it’s just on my end… but now after I post a comment, I don’t see the “temporary” post unlike before where it says Thanks and that the comment will be reviewed etc…

Thanks in advance Christine!

I’m glad you’re getting good wear from the formula! Unfortunately, I find the brush REALLY hard to use. It sort of bends every which way and doesn’t spread the polish easily over my nail like the Dior/YSL/OPI brushes do, which is very strange. It must be the length or something.
