What do you do if your makeup doesn't turn out how you wanted?

What do you do if your makeup doesn't turn out how you wanted?

I’m fortunate that I usually have time to redo it in full if I want to, so that’s the most likely route… Just the other day, I redid my foundation FOUR times because nothing–I repeat, NOTHING–was working on my nose area (flaking, patchy, just dreadful). If it’s a minor thing, like maybe...

Do you mix foundations? Any favorite combos?

Do you mix foundations? Any favorite combos?

I’m a big mixer! I’ve been known to mix shades within a formula for years, and I’ll definitely mix a dewier finish foundation with something more matte or higher coverage. I love Natasha Denona Face Glow mixed with La Mer Soft Fluid. Giorgio Armani Power Fabric + Luminous Silk is also a...

Matte Foundation

I love how well it can photograph — matte foundations tend to make my skin look smoother and more poreless in photos, though I think some sheen is more flattering in person. Matte foundations can dry quickly and be more unforgiving on drier areas of the face, especially around my nose area!

Do you use products you dislike to finish them?

Do you use products you dislike to finish them?

What are your tricks for budge-proof, sweat-proof makeup?

What are your tricks for budge-proof, sweat-proof makeup?

I’ll use eyeshadow and face primer with setting powder and setting spray. I’ll opt for longer-wear products–like Marc Jacobs Highliners, which are the longest-wearing eyeliners for me–if I know I need that level of longevity. For base, I’ve been going sheerer rather than heavier (and also...

Do you ever wear makeup to alter your mood?

Do you ever wear makeup to alter your mood?

Oh, absolutely! I find that there’s something relaxing and soothing about sitting down and doing my makeup each day. It’s such a massive part of my day-to-day routine that skipping it often feels like a sign there’s too much going on elsewhere (and usually not in a good way!). Most of the...
