Stroke of Midnight

Makeup Geek Stroke of Midnight Eyeshadow Palette x 9 ($35.00 for 0.58 oz.) is a limited edition, holiday release, which is still available. It includes nine full-sized eyeshadows across a mix of finishes and depths, though it is a more neutral palette overall. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the quality was more consistent across the palette than has been the norm for the brand in the last couple of years. I think the shades worked together well. It seems the brand has wised up and finally decreased the price of their pre-made palettes to $35 (they used to be $45), which is more… palatable.

Soiree is a bright, cooler beige base with pink-to-peach shifting pearl. The eyeshadow had good color payoff in a single layer, which was buildable to full coverage with a second layer or applied with a dampened brush. The texture was soft, more loosely-pressed in the pan, so it was a touch on the powdery side, but it seemed to “melt” slightly on my lid so it ended up looking quite smooth after a few minutes. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Magnifique is a medium, taupe-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with less than a half of layer on top. The consistency was soft, blendable, though a little powdery in the pan so I had to be careful to tap off the excess to avoid fallout. It lasted nicely for seven and a half hours on me before fading a bit.

Amour is a muted, medium brown with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. There were very fine sparkles strewn throughout, but it looked and performed more like a matte eyeshadow in practice. It had good pigmentation that blended out well on my lid without sheering out too readily, despite having a slightly drier, dustier texture in the pan. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

It had good color payoff with a soft, more loosely-pressed texture, so it was easy to over-apply product on my brush (which would result in fallout). I felt like my last single of this shade seemed to have greater depth, though. This shade stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Makeup Geek Apple Spice Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a medium-dark, coppery brown with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to opaque coverage in one and a half layers. The texture was soft, slightly dusty but applied evenly and blended out nicely on the lid. It wore well for seven and a half hours on its own.

It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with two layers. The consistency had a lot more slip than is typical for the brand, so it made the base more prone to applying unevenly if it wasn’t applied with fingertips. I also noticed that the finish seemed to fade from metallic to pearl within a few minutes of application. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Makeup Geek Blue My Mind Foiled Eyeshadow ($10.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a rich, medium blue with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was incredibly dense, slightly thick, and cream-like–a denser texture than most of their Foiled shades. It had opaque color coverage, and surprisingly, it applied well with a brush as well as fingertips, and it wasn’t a challenge to blend. It wore well for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

Makeup Geek Leafing So Soon Eyeshadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a light green with warm, golden shimmer and a frosted finish. It had sheer coverage with a drier, dustier texture that was hard to work with. I could only salvage this shade by applying it with a dampened brush and using four to five layers, and it always seemed to look a bit faded/less shimmery within a few minutes of application. After the initial application, it started to be more noticeably faded at the seven-hour mark.

Makeup Geek Tenacious Power Pigment ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium blue with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. The color payoff was opaque in a single layer, though it was drier to the touch and had a tendency to look ragged along the edges when I blended it out on my lid. It was also the shade that darkened the most significantly within a few minutes of application, and despite attempting to layer it on multiple times, it never returned to its vibrancy–even over primer. When I tried using it on bare skin, it turned into a patchy, dark teal mess within 10 minutes that was unwearable out of the house (and frankly, I’m not too bothered by much these days, so I wear a slew of odd looks and the like out and about!) it was just that bad. Luckily, I tested at home, and it managed to cling to my lid sinking further and further into every line I didn’t even know I had on my lid for the next five hours.

Formula Overview

$9.00/0.07 oz. - $128.57 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to be "highly-pigmented" that "will maintain their vibrancy." Some shades were pigmented, some were not. The majority of the eyeshadows had a grainier, drier texture that had some excess product kicked up in the pan and was prone to moderate fallout during application without use of a primer. In general, most of the shades were dismal applied over bare skin as the drier texture seemed more prone to picking up the natural oils on the skin, absorbing them, and looking uneven as some parts appeared darker than others.

Several shades were an exercise in frustration trying to blend out and maintain vibrancy, which was something I felt even when I used the eyeshadows over primer, as they always faded and darkened within a few minutes of wear. I packed and packed the shades on to get decent results out of them and had to use primer just to get something only mildly embarrassing to look at.

Typically, within six hours, the shades had altered noticeably with some fading and patchiness apparent; with primer, that got closer to eight hours overall but I saw some slight shifting in certain shades faster than that. The looks I created with these shades took me three times longer than other bright, matte eyeshadows on the market (Viseart, Sugarpill, Urban Decay, ColourPop) and required a lot of cleanup in comparison.

Makeup Geek Indestructible Power Pigment ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a dark, violet purple with cool, blue undertones and a mostly matte finish. The consistency was rather grainy and felt unblended or poorly mixed. It had semi-sheer coverage that was buildable to medium coverage (four layers to achieve medium coverage and tons of fallout–probably more underneath my eye than on it!) without primer and mostly opaque coverage (four layers, though) over primer. It was hard to diffuse the edges of due to the drier, thinner texture that clung to my skin. On its own, the eyeshadow started to darken and turn patchier around the six-hour mark. This was another shade that caused other shades to lift, like when I tried to blend it with Transform (the green), it just lifted up half of the green and left behind a patchy mess.

The pigmentation was semi-opaque in a single layer, and it was buildable to opaque coverage with two to three layers. The consistency was slightly dusty and dry to the touch, along with some graininess in the pan when I felt it with my fingertips. It was one of the more blendable shades in the range, though it wouldn’t be a shade I’d reach for in a rush. I noticed that it had a tendency to lift color it layered on top of, though, so I had to be very careful with placement and blending. It lasted for seven hours before turning patchy on me.

Makeup Geek Dedicated Power Pigment ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a medium-dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable over primer–applied over bare lids seemed to result in really uneven application that moved a lot without building up. The texture was drier and grainy, which also made it prone to fallout and made it harder to diffuse and blend out. I had better luck using this one when pressed and patted onto my eye first, and then using a separate brush for blending to avoid getting tons of fallout. I also had to go back and layer more product on top as it had faded and darkened within five minutes of application. It lasted for six hours on bare skin and eight and a half hours over primer.

It had opaque pigmentation that applied fairly well to bare skin and didn’t take too much work to blend out, but it darkened within 10 minutes of initial application and took on a slight sheen. Makeup Geek Unleashed Power Pigment ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a brighter, medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was slightly grainy but less dry compared to the other red/purple shades in the formula, so it was easier to use and blended out without too much work. This shade also was better at applying true-to-pan and actually staying that way (other shades darkened noticeably within a few minutes). It had good pigmentation and lasted for seven and a half hours with only slight fading over time.

Makeup Geek Dynamic Power Pigment ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a rich orange with warm, yellow undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture was fairly soft (especially compared to other shades), and I didn’t have any issues blending out the edges of the eyeshadow over bare skin or over primer. However, it darkened considerably on my lid and looked more like an orange-red (even over primer), and it turned patchy within 15 minutes of wear (almost like it seeped into my lid texture) and just stayed at that level of patchiness for the next seven hours.

It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture but was rather powdery in the pan, so there was some fallout during application (even after tapping away some excess). It lasted for seven hours on me before sinking into my lid lines/creases.

Makeup Geek Transform Power Pigment ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a bright, medium green with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a smooth, blendable texture–it was by far the best eyeshadow in the range–that was easier to use on the lid with or without primer. The downside, though, was that it did not maintain its vibrancy as it darkened when applied to my skin, and this occurred when I applied it over primer, too. It wore well for seven and a half hours with only slight, visible patchiness.
