BUXOM Customizable Eyeshadow Bar Palette
BUXOM Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz. each or $40.00 for 6 x 0.05 oz.) is a new formula that is available as a customizable palette system, where you can purchase a single shade and an individual compact for $13 or purchase a six-pan palette, plus six eyeshadows to go inside of it, for $40. Each eyeshadow is held inside a metal pan that is (presumably) glued into a plastic pan that snaps into the compact/palette. The eyeshadows are easily lifted in and out of the palette, so you can rearrange them or create a new combination if you have more than one set of six. They will fit into a Z-palette, but you’ll need to add a magnet to keep it in place. The eyeshadow formula is one that works better in action than swatched, as several of the mattes seemed on the thinner, more powdery side, but then they would blend exceptionally well while adhering to bare skin–and they wouldn’t fade any faster than the more shimmery eyeshadows. The more shimmery shades tended to outperform the matte shades with better color payoff. These eyeshadows seem to have a slightly firmer press to them (more in the style of your average MAC eyeshadow), and they feel quite different compared to bareMinerals’ Ready line, as those have a thicker, denser consistency.
BUXOM Pre-nup Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering emerald.” It’s a softened, medium-dark emerald green with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had great color payoff with a soft, blendable consistency that was a little powdery in the pan but didn’t look powdery on the skin. The color wore well for eight and a half hours before fading. NYX Seafoam Green (P, $4.50) is cooler. Make Up For Ever #52 (LE, $23.00) is warmer. Disney by Sephora Fins (LE, ) is less pigmented, warmer. Make Up For Ever ME304 Emerald (P, $21.00) is darker. Urban Decay Indo (P, $18.00) is darker. Hello Kitty Three Apples (LE, ) is darker, more muted. ColourPop Empire (P, $5.00) is darker, warmer. Too Faced Christmas Tree (LE, $16.00) is darker, more muted, warmer. ColourPop Empire (P, $5.00) is darker, warmer. Sugarpill Clickbait (P, $13.00) is lighter, warmer. BUXOM Schmooze Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering turquoise.” It’s a brightened, slightly lighter-than-medium blue with a frosted sheen and almost “warm” undertones (but it is cool-toned). It had intense color payoff with a really soft, smooth texture that blended beautifully on the skin while wearing for eight and a half hours. Kat Von D Bukowski (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #6 (P, $9.99) is darker, cooler. Urban Decay Unhinged (LE, $18.00) is darker, more muted, cooler. Disney by Sephora Diamond Sky (LE, ) is darker, more muted. Disney by Sephora Blue Lagoon (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Peace (P, $18.00) is darker. NARS South Pacific #1 (P, $24.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer. Dior Rivage #3 (LE, ) is lighter, cooler. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Luxe Life Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “glimmering periwinkle.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark cornflower blue with cool, bluish-violet undertones and a faint lighter blue shimmer over a mostly matte finish. It had so-so pigmentation, which is likely due to the thinner, more powdery consistency. It looked better on the eye, as it was buildable, but it is a shade that needs extra help. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Hello Kitty Dear Daniel (LE, ) is lighter. Sugarpill Royal Sugar (P, $13.00) is darker, brighter. Sugarpill Velocity (P, $12.00) is darker, brighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Posh Purple Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering violet.” It’s a lightly brightened, medium-dark violet purple with cool, blue undertones and a frosted finish. It was slightly drier and more powdery, which resulted in more semi-opaque coverage. It was buildable and with a denser brush, more opaque color was possible. This shade stayed on well for eight hours. Urban Decay Ransom (DC, $18.00) is less shimmery. Milani Primary #4 (P, $6.99) is darker. Disney by Sephora Sea Witch (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Fyrinnae Because Cats (P, $6.80) is darker, more muted. Sleek MakeUP Bliss in Barcelona (LE, $9.99) is darker. Makeup Geek Pop Culture (P, $5.99) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Simbad’s Seas (LE, $9.99) is more shimmery, darker, cooler. MAC Sexy PB&J (LE, $16.00) is lighter, warmer. Makeup Geek Caitlin Rose (P, $9.99) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer. Hello Kitty Supercute (LE, ) is less shimmery, warmer. Ardency Inn Royal (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer. Anastasia Iridescent Purple (P, $12.00) is warmer. BUXOM Wild Nights Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering sugar plum.” It’s a medium-dark plum with warm, orange undertones and a pink, frosted sheen. It had good color coverage with a blendable consistency, but it was slightly dry in overall texture–yet it worked really well on the skin. On me, the color started to crease after eight and a half hours. Makeup Geek Enchanted (P, $6.99) is darker, warmer. Sleek MakeUP A Vow in Venice (LE, $9.99) is less shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Last Call (P, $18.00) is darker. MAC Heritage Rouge (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer. NARS Desdemona (P, $29.00) is less shimmery. MAC Hidden Motive (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, cooler. Make Up For Ever ME840 Pink Chrome (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Gucci Beauty Autumn Fire #3 (P, ) is less shimmery, darker. MAC Plummed (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. MAC Trusted Instinct #3 (LE, ) is darker, more muted. LORAC Merlot (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Anastasia Sangria (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Pink Glow #3 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, warmer. Anastasia Pink Sapphire (LE, $12.00) is darker. Zoeva Warm Notes (P, ) is cooler. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM 24KT Stilettos Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “metallic gold.” It’s a brightened, medium gold with a metallic sheen and subtle gold sparkle. It’s an almost cool-toned gold, but it is still a yellowed gold. It was really rich in color, but the texture was so soft that it was on the powdery side. The color started to fade after nine hours of wear. Chanel Topkapi #4 (LE, ) is darker. Make Up For Ever #11 (P, $23.00) is darker. Urban Decay Disco (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, more muted. ColourPop Get Lucky (P, $5.00) is less shimmery, darker. Chanel Rêve d’Orient #3 (LE, ) is lighter. Gucci Beauty Antique Gold (P, $37.00) is lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #5 (P, ) is warmer. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #4 (LE, ) is lighter, brighter, warmer. Urban Decay Blitz (LE, $18.00) is darker. Wow. Those look so pigmented and beautiful on you! I really wish the Dolly’s Wild Side palette had worked for me. I love the mauve shades in the palette but I just could not get them to work on my lids. Wild Nights looked like a muddy, frosted, mess on me. I’m just perplexed as to why the palette performed so terribly on my lids. Sigh… I’m still waiting for MY palette with the perfect mauves and plums.
That is odd! I checked the shades in that palette, and I know for sure Spoiled Sexy was one that swatched really poorly (I haven’t used it on the eyes, so I don’t know if it’s really as bad as it looks).
Looooove the look at the end Christine, rainbow eyes! I love unexpected colour combinations 😀 xx
Thank you, Bex! 🙂
I love the look you did with these!! It’s so fun and vibrant 🙂
Thanks, Jennifer!
How does the buxom formula compare to mufe’s artist shadows?
They’re not really comparable in texture, IMO. They’re both powder eyeshadows, but how they feel is pretty different!
Thank you! I think I might just stick with the mufe ones. I seem to have grown rather fond of them. So dangerous, so so dangerous and yet so worth it to me. XD
Holy Moly! I love this eye look- so fun for summer! How do you feel these “A” rated ones compare to MUFE artist shadows. I really love MUFE formula so it would have to be a close match in formula or a color that they can’t dupe in order for me to want to get these vs those. I know it’s a savings. But, I have enough shadows now that I can wait until I can get the better ones. I think these are really nice though. If I hadn’t found MUFE or was on a tighter budget, I’d probably look into some of the shades. I don’t like that some of the colors are harder to work with though.
An A is an A, so-to-speak (this, of course, is also dependent on the formula’s claims), but some of these are quite nice, though not all. Generally, the Artist Shadows have a different texture compared to the majority of eyeshadow formulas on the market, as they’re really dense and thick, but smooth and pigmented (except the mattes). For mattes, MUFE’s formula is silkier but can be more powdery initially and doesn’t have as thin of a feel as Buxom’s (so far). These don’t wear poorly, but MUFE does last longer on me (8-12 hours, depending on the shade).
Thanks! I think I’ll stick with MUFE for my build-you own system.I already got it going and I am pleased with the formula. So, why mess with it.
Wowzers!!! I am digging the rainbow look you did with these! So cool! And also pleasantly surprised that Luxe Life performs as well as it did on the lid, not for myself, but for those that look great in periwinkles! These seem pretty good for the price of the 6 pan palette.
Thank you so much, Nancy! 🙂
Wow, I’m really impressed with these ratings. Green, blue, and purples are SO hard to get right, and with the exception of Luxe Life, Buxom is getting A’s and B’s here. Since I have enough neutrals already, I hope there are enough decent performing shades to put together a green, blue, and purple kit. And too bad the kit isn’t the leopard print one. I might have to put leopard print stickers on mine 🙂
Fingers crossed 🙂
Thanks so much 🙂 The blues are what I was most interested in and seeing Luxe Life’s performance bums me out. Finding the perfect cobalt-cornflower-periwinkle hybrid is tough! Something in between MUFE Periwinkle and Royal Sugar or Velocity. Have all the dupes save the Hello Kitty one. Layering ColourPop’s Taco over shades of lavender has helped. Silly elusive cobalt-periwinkles!
One day, they’ll find a way to make good periwinkles and purple eyeshadows without a ton of shimmer!
Someday. Until then I shall overuse similarly colored eyeliners but it’s just not the same. Blue and purple can be SUCH tough pigments to nail down. Any color that melds the two, and especially tries to do so without lots of glitter, is apparently just out of grasp.
Wild nights is my fav there!
Yay!
Other than the fact that you create gorgeous rainbow eyes and that these are really impressing me, I’m curious as to why there are so many Pre-nups.. In cosmetics? Life entering art.. Makes me wonder..
Thanks, Lotus!
I really like these though I wish Luxe Life were better. It’s always so hard to get periwinkle shadows right. At least it can be worked with.
It is hard to get them to be pigmented and stay that way!
Got to say, I love the thought of the palette design. It looks easy but when put together, as neat as a pre-made palette.
I like how they come together!
Wow, these are gorgeous. I was holding my breath, hoping Pre-nup would be good, so that makes me happy. I really like Posh Purple and Wild Nights as well. After seeing your other post about the neutrals, I’m really looking forward to putting a palette together.
It’s pretty good given that emerald green is, for whatever reason, difficult to get done without some dryness!
Ahh, I’m so glad these didn’t turn out disappointing! Looks like I’ll be putting together a palette for myself for sure… Now I just have to wait until Room Service and La-La-Lavish to come back in stock! 😉 …Or wait until they show up in stores.
Yayy!
Really gorgeous colours for summer, love the green and blues. Even the gold is beautiful. And I really love your rainbow look on your eyes Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
I like the neutral combo more, but if you’re looking for a colorful power palette this looks great! Wild Nights is the shade that really grabbed my attention here, it’s soooo beautiful.
Gotta have my brights!
Wow, these are SO pretty! <3
And, I’m LOVING the eye look! SOOOO GORGEOUS! <3
They are!
OMG, Posh Purple. I need that! And Wild Nights and Pre-nup, too, lol. Possibly Luxe Life, depending how close it looks to the Illamasqua one I have; I don’t wear periwinkle blue often enough to bother with a collection. (Although my brother’s wedding had a periwinkle colour theme, and my goodness, it was hard to find stuff to coordinate!!! Easier now, but I still gravitate towards the shade when I see it.)
Periwinkle IS hard to find in makeup!
