Burberry Shell (003) Wet & Dry Glow Shadow
Burberry Shell (003) Wet & Dry Glow Shadow ($29.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a brilliant, brightened golden orange with warm undertones and a strong, metallic sheen. The texture was soft, smooth, and very blendable on the skin. It can be applied wet or dry, with dry application giving lighter, slightly sheer coverage and damp application giving you a slightly deeper, more metallic finish. It wore well for nine hours before creasing a bit. MAC Natural Vigor #2 (LE, $21.00) isn’t quite as metallic. Kat Von D Platonic (LE) is darker, less shimmery/ MAC Mortal #2 (LE) is lighter. Urban Decay Baked Cowboy (P, $18.00) is darker, less metallic. Giorgio Armani Organica (Right) (LE) is darker. LORAC Undiscovered (P) is slightly darker. Ulta Gold (P, $10.00) is yellower. Makeup Geek Gold Digger (P, $5.99) is darker. Dior Night Golds #4 (LE) is lighter. bareMinerals Surreal (P) is yellower. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Burberry Pale Barley (102) Wet & Dry Silk Shadow ($29.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a softened, medium-dark taupe brown with warm, golden beige shimmer that gives it a more pearly finish. It’s supposed to give a “more natural, buildable” effect when used dry with a more “saturated color effect” when used damp, though I didn’t see significant differences between the two applications. It’s a bit softer dry, and the shimmery finish is stronger when applied damp, but the differences are very subtle. The formula of the new range doesn’t seem to feel or perform differently than what I’ve experienced in the original eyeshadow range, though this seems to run lighter than the original in color. The texture is incredibly soft and silky–a little powdery at times–and blends effortlessly on the skin. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading to a small degree. MAC Force of Nature #1 (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker. Charlotte Tilbury Fallen Angel #2 (LE) is more shimmery. Anastasia Custom (P, $12.00) is slightly darker. MAC Quintessential (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Make Up For Ever I550 Olive Gray (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. Clarins The Essentials #5 (LE) is cooler-toned. MAC Era (P, $16.00) is similar. Bobbi Brown Heather Brown (LE, $22.00) is similar. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Burberry Rosewood (202) Wet & Dry Silk Shadow ($29.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a medium-dark taupe brown with a hint of rose and a subtly metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage applied dry and opaque coverage applied damp, and the finish became more metallic when it was applied with a wet brush. The consistency was very finely-milled and silky, but it was a little powdery. It wore well for eight hours before fading regardless of application method. MAC Force of Nature #1 (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker. Kat Von D Heaven Knows (LE) is less shimmery. Anastasia Custom (P, $12.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever S560 Taupe (P, $21.00) is warmer, less shimmery. Clarins The Essentials #5 (LE) is lighter. MAC Vintage Selection (P, $18.50) is a cream product. Giorgio Armani Terra Sienna #2 (P) is cooler-toned. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

can you do a comparison post between the new and old formulas? i know you’re busy but i’m pretty curious. thanks!
They don’t feel different to me, but I didn’t have a lot of shades from the original formula that overlap with ones I have in the new formula.
Oh Shell looks so much different than I thought! But it’s pretty, definitely.
It’s brightening!
I love how these look. Rosewood is so pretty.
It is! I like how it has that subtle pink to it.
I’m normally totally against shimmer in the crease, but this is gorgeous!
Thanks!
If I like but don’t love the nars dual intensity shadows, do you think I would like the glow shadows?
You’ll like them, but you probably won’t love them!
Also, to my fellow Canadian beauty lovers, the bay.com now sells the burberry beauty line.
But Pale Barley is out of stock everywhere, including The Bay 🙁
Rosewood and Pale Barley are such workhorse shades. And I love the packaging -comes with mirror and applicator, so convenient when you are on-the-go.
They really are!
Looks beautiful on you! Would you say that Shell could be a good subsitute for Tom Ford Escapade, to create that subtle brightening effect? Or would Shell be too frosty/shimmery? I’ve been trying to find something similar to that one!
It will definitely brighten like Escapade 🙂 It’s a little more metallic, but I don’t think it’s too shimmery.
These colors would suit anyone. They are perfect for daily wear. Even a single shadow would look great as an all over color.
They are very flattering shades!
I can’t stop staring at shell and it’s gorgeous finish!
It’s a stunner!
I need to just get some of these already. I keep saying I will but then I end up spending my budget other things. :/ I’ve been wanting Pale Barley for a while now.
Which other shades are on your list?
These are so pretty! You mentioned these are on the powdery side – does this cause any fallout?
I didn’t have any issues with fall out.
I’d certainly consider getting Rosewood!
Yay!
how do you get pigment so intense for the glow shadow? i tried with mac fix plus on the eye and it barely does anything on the eye.
I used it dry and with regular water. I used it dry in the look!
did you try it with different types of brushes? sometimes that helps me
yea I used a denser brush and it worked well for a brow highlughter. My lids are pretty wrinkly so it just doesn’t stick well even wet.
The swatches look quite similar wet and dry. I’d be curious to see what the deeper shades look like if you get more of them. Pretty but not special enough to tempt me at that price, I don’t think.
I wonder!
Very pretty muted colours. They would suit a lot of complexions too. BUT – I think that most of us have these colours in their stash – so they are dupable.
Shell looks a beautiful colour and you did a lovely eye look Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
These are so very gorgeous! They seem so hard to get too! I pre-ordered the first one you reviewed right after you did and it keeps getting pushed back..mid April now!
WOW!
They swatch really pretty but applied they all look the same. A little disappointed in that. Are they wet on the left and dry on the right?
Dry on the left, damp on the right.
Beautiful colors – I especially want the last two! Thank you so much for swatching them!!
No prob, Deborah!
Yay! So happy to see this review! I had all of these in an online basket ready to check out, but I was hesitant and only ended up buying Nude! 😀 Maybe I’ll get Shell though, I don’t have a dupe for it! Heh heh
Oooh! 🙂 Shell is more unique relative to the other two!
Do you think Pale Barley is Similar to Patina from MAC?
I think MAC Patina is warmer!
Good to hear that the shades don’t differ much from the old formulas, because Pale Barley (old) is one of my most favourite and most used eyeshadows ever. I recommend that one to everybody – it’s so pretty, has a great formula and everybody can wear it. I’ll have a look at the new shades then if the formula is comparable!
I was surprised there wasn’t a more noticeable difference! The Glow ones are definitely different, but the Silk feel really similar.
Hey Christine, did Burberry discontinue the original formula of these shades? Please, do not tell me that it didn’t.
Sorry my mistake…:
Please, do not tell me that it DID.
Correct, they discontinued the original formula!
Pale barley and rosewood are so alike, any visible differences? I ended up buying nude, hesitant between rosewood and pale barley! Please give advise, thanks
I see some, but they’re not two shades I’d use together!
Any more details on how the new and old Pale Barley formulas compare? I can’t decide whether to wait for whether or not Nordstrom will re-stock the old Pale Barley (they pop out very occasionally and sell out again immediately so I have to be pretty vigilant in checking), or just go for the new one. Any one you like more? How do the colors compare?
Thanks for your help! Love the post.
I don’t really notice any color differences, the new formula is perhaps a little drier when used dry since it can now be used wet/dry.
Thank you very much for this post and the comparison!:)
I am really intrigued by Pale Barley, but I heard, that the color is different now, then compared to the old formular. Have you experienced that?
I really love Mac’s Patina and am afraid that Pale barley might be a lot cooler toned, as i don’t find cool taupes flattering on my light, yellow skin tone.
Also I can’t find the old shadow in this color anywhere anymore…
