Bobbi Brown Black Velvet Collection: Creamy Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches
Creamy Lip Color: Black Mahogany, Black Cherry
Black Velvet with that Slow Southern Style…
Bobbi Brown’s Black Velvet Collection is a surprising mix of colors from the brand–it’s very classic in a dark, sultry kind of way. It’s not what I’d expect from Bobbi Brown, yet it’s exactly in line with the brand’s image. There are two new shades of the Creamy Lip Color ($22.00 for 0.12 oz.): Black Cherry (deep red wine) and Black Mahogany (black brown).
- Black Cherry is a darkened red-plum with a glossy finish. It has a very juicy look and feel to it; it’s not quite opaque, but it definitely packs a punch. This is my favorite lip color out of the four new lip colors I tried from the Black Velvet collection.
- Black Mahogany is a blackened brown with a glossy finish. It’s semi-opaque, and it has a tendency to look like part-gloss, part-lip stain, because it looks like a bold, opaque color, but it’s not quite there.
The Creamy Lip Color formula is moisturizing without sliding off in an hour–I usually get three to four hours of wear, but these darker shades seem to pull closer to four to five hours, and I did find Black Cherry left a residual stain behind. This formula makes lips look a little fuller from the glossiness and “wet” finish.

I like the Cherry one a lot but the Mahogany reminds me of my 3 year old after he eats chocolate pudding!
Ha ha that cracked me up!!
I think the black cherry will become my first BB product 🙂
ooooh I like these colors. I like black cherry more but def the other one can work. Love them!
I’m a big Bobbi Brown fan who is loving the Black Cherry! Plus, it looks great on you!
Thanks, Latonya!
black cherry looks gorgeous. not too sure about the other one though.
I love the Black Cherry, that’s one of my favorite looks for fall and winter. The brown one? It’s too 1995 for me.
Sorry to say, but I think both these look positively awful.
Horrible colours and terrible coverage.
Nope. Disappointing.
Are these two colors LE? Could you stat whether or not they are in your reviews for the future products in the BB Black Velvet Collection please? Thanks!
They’re not LE – if it’s LE, I usually state that 🙂
Black Cherry looks nice. <3
I really like the cherry one! ^^
I love both of these colours. I think I prefer the brown one over the black cherry. But since Bobbi Brown is not available in my country all I can do is look and admire.
Is black cherry similar to prudeaux slim shine from mac? X
From an older swatch of Prudeaux I’m looking at, not really. Black Cherry is closer to Media.
I like the Black Cherry colour, but not the finish, I find it (well, actually I find both) a little uneven, aren’t they?
I mean, they seem to be very irregular on the lips…
I find they have this wet, meshy look to them that’s not really apparent at a normal viewing distance but is noticeable in a photo where my lips are about 3x the size they normally are and up close.
Ahhh! OK! Then it’s not so bad =)
I can totally understand what you mean though! 🙂
thanks so much for the swatches!
I was so curious for the brown one.. now i think it is REALLY dark brown.. not sure I will be able to pull this off. Like the cherry one!
I am so curious for the blackened bronze now (garnet?) and the other two lip sticks! can you do them, Christine? Thanks!
I don’t have the Garnet one, but I have the other two lipsticks, which I’ll review tomorrow or the next day 🙂
thanks so much ;D
Black Mahogany just looks very 90s on you Christine, which is coming back in style anyway, you better watch out! But Black Mahogany looks alright on you from far away. The Black Cherry one does look very good on you though.
Can’t say I was cognizant of makeup in the 90s, lol!
These didn’t turn out as dark as I expected, but it still looks way nice.
OOO I love the Black Cherry on you Christine! Can you think of a close dupe for that one?
Maybe MAC Media
OMG, the brown is just… omg. gross.
Seriously, I have seen A LOT of lipsticks/glosses/whatevers, and you, Christine, are GORGEOUS, and can make almost anything work… but jeeeeeesus Bobbi Brown! That’s an ugly color!
I understand that maybe this might look good on a darker-skinned lady, but still…. I think there’s better options.
Black Cherry really does remind me of cherries! I think I’d be licking my lips all day thinking that it’s cherry juice!
Oh my goodness! I’ve been on the hunt for a glossy wine lip color and I think I’ve found it in Black Cherry! It’s a bit redder than I’d like but I think it’ll do!
The brown isnt bad at all really. Now if youre pale and lacking color….
I checked out this collection yesterday and bought Black Cherry on the spot. It’s fantastic. As you said, this lipstick is part gloss and part stain; the texture is thicker than a normal gloss and it applies very easily with no smearing, no built-up edges, and an even wear. It reminds me a bit of Nars Fast Ride, but with more of a cherry color. Still, it skews fuchsia on me (a good thing!). It provides good, but still somewhat sheer, coverage, and it can be worn as a stain or at full strength. This is my new favorite lipstick.
Black Mahogany is too brown for me and I skipped it.
Adding that Black Cherry looks more to the red end of the spectrum on you than it does on me. I pull more of the purple tones.
haha! did you wear a grey sweater in summer just for these reviews? much love christine
Short sleeve 😉
Oooh I really like Black Cherry.
Is Black Cherry in any way similar to Clinique’s Black Honey?
I don’t have that!
