Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask Review & Photos
Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask
Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask ($26.00 for 0.52 oz.) is supposed to be a “soothing, leave-on lip mask that replenishes moisture in lips.” If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that keeping my lips in tip-top shape is not just a priority but part and parcel for sharing lip swatches with all of you! I’ve been specifically trying to branch out and try new lip balms, and after being impressed by some of Bite Beauty’s other products, I figured this would be one to consider. It’s less “mask”-like to me and more like your overnight lip balm/industrial-strength lip balm.
It uses a lanolin base along with castor seed oil, shea butter, agave nectar, and jojoba oil. It also contains “triple the amount of antioxidant trans-resveratrol found in red wine.” I’ve been wearing this for a few weeks now, and I apply it shortly before bed. After eight to ten hours later, there is usually a sheer layer still on my lips, which is something I really want to have happen in a lip balm. My lips feel nourished, smooth, and comfortable the next day. The texture of this product is very thick, which makes it a bit harder to squeeze out of the tube, and it takes a few seconds to “melt” on the lips so that it can be smoothed across for even coverage. It is a fairly tacky product, though not to the level of feeling like glue. It has a sweet, non-descript scent and taste and a soft sheen (not too glossy, not matte).
For me, my lips usually just need an extra boost of hydration on an as-needed basis, but they’re not chronically dry any more and haven’t been for some time. That being said, the Agave Lip Mask maintained the health and smooth texture of my lips (and if I wear nothing for long enough, my lips will start to go back a horrible, winding path of dryness). A little goes a long way, and one tube will last quite awhile as you don’t need to frequently reapply, but I have heard of others having issues with the packaging cracking/breaking over time. I haven’t experienced any issues with packaging deteriorating over time, but I keep mine in my nightstand.

I bought this a few weeks ago in the Sephora 15% off VIB offer and I love it. Like you, I apply it before bed or if I’m home and not wearing lipstick. The metal tube is not the easiest to use but I have a metal sewing bodkin (basically a very thick, strong and blunt needle) that I use like a spatula to get out the product.
It takes a little more squeezing than your average tube, but it really hasn’t been a huge issue for me thus far! Then again, maybe I just keep my house warmer 😉
Oh Bite should REALLY expand out of North America! I’ve been wanting to try some of their products for a long time. Maybe I’ll hassle a friend who lives in the US to take some back next time!
I’m a bit of a lip balm addict as well. I’ve found some formulas that work really well for me, but that doesn’t stop me from trying new stuff! Glad to hear you don’t have problems with the packaging. I think EVERY review I’ve read so far raves about the formula but disses the packaging 😉
Mine just sits in my nightstand, so maybe that’s why it hasn’t been an issue for me!
Definitely going to pick this up. Night time lip moisture replenishment is a must for these desert lips.
I like that you can still feel some of it in the AM!
What do you tend to use for dry chapped lips before you tried this product?
I use Jack Black Lip Balm!
I agree. I’m enjoying mine. Love their lip glosses & lipstick because of their ingredients
Happy to hear you’re loving it, Liz!
Thank you for the review! I was intrigued by this product but from what you said it’s not much different from my usual lanolin-based lip balm that I wear overnight (I use Lanolips or Dr Lipp). I guarantee I would puncture the packaging in 5 seconds or less, because I’m way too clumsy with metal tubes.
I’m kind of at the point where it seems like, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I keep trying new lip balms, but they all work well and my lips just feel… good? the same healthy, smooth condition they’ve been in for awhile now.
I love this stuff! Had to buy a tube for each of my girls! Bye Bye Blistex!
Yay!!
One of my favorite products! However, the packaging is horrible. After a few uses the tube cracks open on the sides.
I’ve been using mine for over four weeks every night but haven’t had any issues!
How does this compare to your previously stated favorite overnight balm, kiss me tonight?
I haven’t used that in years – I’ve been using primarily Jack Black Lip Balm since I tried that.
My lips need all the extra care they can get, so this definitely sounds nice. For now my trusted old Labello lip balm works fine too though.
If you’ve found something that works, you’re good! 😀
Hmm, I might have to check this out. It’s pricey, though.
I swear, the tube is going to last forever, lol!
Good to know!
I’ve been very interested in trying this! I’m very loyal to my Jack Black lip balm and I know it is one of your favorites too. Do you like the Bite Beauty lip mask better or do you still prefer the Jack Black lip balms?
They work the same on me, so I prefer the non-sticky texture of Jack Black 🙂
I also have been a loyal Jack Black user for years (thanks for the recommendation, Christine!!) but after I picked up this Bite Agave Lip Mask, I’ve found myself reaching for this over the JB as my overnight lip balm. In comparison, the Bite makes the JB seem a touch (like a TEENSY TOUCH) gritty, and I’ve found my lips seem plumper, more comfortable, and perfectly ready for lipstick the next morning. Just thought I’d chime in as a fellow Jack Black devotee! 🙂
A much cheaper version of this is Lansinoh HPA Lanolin in the lavender tube. You get 1.41 ounces. It is just straight up lanolin, no scent at all. I can apply lipstick over a thin layer of this stuff if I need to. In fact, I usually do as I have chronically dry lips that all lip products tend to exacerbate. Both the Bite Beauty Mask and the Lansinoh will be near impossible to squeeze out of the tube if the ambient temperature is cold. Lansinoh changed their tube a few years back (I think it is thicker walled) and this has made a big difference. I have never had the tube crack or split on me even with the old style tube.
Check it out at Target and some big drug store chains….in the baby care department. I have been using it for many years now. Prior to this discovery (thanks to a tip in Allure magazine) I can finally wear lipstick after a lifetime without. I have not tried the Bite Mask but it sure sounds as if it does the same good job of nourishing the lips and eventually lessening those lip crack lines.
Thanks for the info, Patsyann!
Okay, so I read this and was at Target so I picked it up (in the breastfeeding section) and I LOVE IT! It feels so good and you get so much. Thanks for the recommendation!
I bought this during the sale too and I am returning it because unfortunately I am super allergic to it! Not sure what the ingredient might be that is bothersome, maybe lanolin, but it made my lips itch and go numb after about 15 minutes. Sad day!
Thinking I might try to exchange for Dior crem de rose which is in the same price range.
Oh no!! It might be lanolin, as there are a fair number who are allergic to that ingredient.
My lips were never dry as they are nowadays! 🙂 This has been on my try list for a long time. Guess its time!
Aww, poor lips!
My friend, Caroline, used this on me when I was her model to get her certified for MUA at Sephora. I like it, but I also like Jack Black and it’s much cheaper and does the same thing.
I really don’t notice a difference in result between the two, so for me, I’d go Jack Black as well! I also prefer the non-sticky texture of Jack Black personally!
The product itself is really good. The packaging could be improved a bit, but it’s not bad. The one thing I really don’t like about this item is the funky smell. 😛
I can definitely see some not loving the scent!
Was thinking about buying this during the VIB sale, now I wish I would have! My lips are awful and nothing seems to work for them. I got some Jack Black Balm but it feels like it just sits on top of my lips and doesn’t moisturize them.
It’s worth checking out, since lanolin is the main component of its base, whereas I believe petrolatum is the first ingredient for Jack Black (though it also has lanolin). You might also look for a formula that uses ingredients other than those two (some people do better with one ingredient over the next).
Ooh… As a self confessed lip balm junkie, this interests me! I have to second Sunny’s wish that Bite would expand out of the US, but then I also want Jack Black stuff to turn up here too!
I don’t know if I could survive without Jack Black!
I love this product but treat it strictly as a lip treatment. My skin/lips are dry dry dry and even for me this is a night time only product. Its worth every penny because it allows me to rock the bold lip colors I was hiding from all winter because I could not keep my lips hydrated!
I’ve only used it at night myself!
I highly advise those with sensitive skin to tread carefully. I used this for two months and it sent me to the dermo. My lips experienced a nasty reaction. Come to find out I was allergic to lanolin which is #1 on the ingredients list. I was so bummed out. 🙁
If you have an allergy to lanolin, this is definitely not a product to try!
I received a sample of this from Sephora. I was soooo excited to try this as I read so many great reviews! The feeling of moisture didn’t last long and I felt my lips flaking again. I’ve suffered from dry cracked lips all my life so I was let down. It smells nice though! I found moisture lasted longer when I apply my medicated lip balm and Vaseline over it. I usually wake up with soft lips. For me this Lip Mask is just not worth the price.
Sounds like lanolin might not work well for you!
I think I must’ve been allergic to something in this. I have very sensitive lips, and this made my lips so dry and flaky that I had to return it before I could even write a review about it. I was so upset. My lips were a mess for weeks after. I know it wasn’t lanolin, because I’ve been using the Jack Black lip balm without issue! Glad it worked for you though, Christine!
Sorry to hear you didn’t do well with this one, Amanda!
This stuff did not like me…..I put it on every evening for a week. Every morning, my lips were rough and yucky feeling…..went back to my Jack Black….
Sounds like it either worked wonders or worked horribly for some!
I recently got this and I can’t live without it. It’s so good that my husband has started stealing it!
Haha!
I originally asked for this as a sample from Sephora because the cost was a little steep. During the 15% off sale I caved in and bought the full size. I now use this everyday and I love it. Yes it’s pricey but Id compare this to all of the night regimen products used. The smell and taste are pleasant.
I think it will last awhile, and if you don’t have a more budget-friendly option that has worked for you, certainly worth it!
I LOVE Bite, and have been wanting to try this out. My lips are naturally very dry, and the Vegas heat doesn’t make it any better. Thanks for the review!
No prob, J!
I got this a while ago and love it. I used to use pure shea butter or aquaphor before bed but needed something a little stronger since I sleep with a fan on for white noise so my lips get dry overnight. I put the teeny tiniest amount on my lips and they’re soft and wonderful in the morning and I still have a thin layer on my lips. Packaging could be better but I have no problems.
Happy to hear this is working well for you, Kate!
I’m glad you reviewed this. I have had my eye on it for a while because my lips can get pretty dry sometimes.
Happy to share! 🙂
I’ll have to get a sample!
Let us know how it goes!
My lips are always extremely dry, but I’ staying away from this because of the lanolin. Lanolin and petrolatum are the biggest no-nos for me. My lips feel better the next day, but then they start peeling and bleeding in a couple of days.
Ouch! What ingredient seems to work best for you?
I feel like petrolatum and I get along the best.
I love this mask so much but I HATE the packaging! It’s just too difficult to use and easily punctured. I noticed multiple punctures within the first couple of weeks and it’s never left my vanity. It drives me nuts lol. And the metal applicator is so rough on the lips. I would have loved for this to come in a plastic tube!
Does it just get punctured when you squeeze it? I keep looking at mine and can’t find any issues, lol! I usually squeeze onto my fingertip and use my finger to apply, though.
Do you have a final rating for the product? I didn’t see it in the review Christine. Thanks 🙂
Hi Sarah,
I don’t rate things like skin care, lip balm, hair products, etc. as they do not translate to the Glossover (e.g. pigmentation).
I bought this during the VIB and am quite enjoying it. Other favourites are jack black, thanks to Christine, eos, and kiehls coconut lip balm.
Do you wear it just at night, Elisa?
Yes, I have found it works best as described in the product description, I think it’s described that way at least, as an overnight mask.
Makes sense! 🙂
Christine, you said you USED to have chronically dry lips…what do you use that helped?? I have this “lip mask” and love it but always in search of a new product for my extremely dry lips.
Jack Black Lip Balm 🙂 Since then, my lips have been pretty good!
I’d like to try this, but the idea of having lanolin on my lips (or anywhere else on my body) grosses me out. I prefer creamy lip balms anyway.
Good thing you have others you can use! 🙂
I just purchased a tube via sephora.com and got it in the mail a couple of days ago. I love the way it feels, but it smells like straight up play-doh. It’s not sweet smelling at all. After reading through the reviews and comments, I’m concerned. Has anyone else noticed this?
Mine definitely doesn’t have that scent 🙁
