Bite Beauty Agave Lip Balm & Sugar Lip Scrub Reviews & Photos

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Balm ($18.00 for 0.15 oz.) is supposed to be a hydrating, restorative lip balm that comes in a twist-up tube. The texture was firmer in the tube, and there was some tugging until the balm started to melt against my lips. I also went through a tube in three weeks–an entire tube!–as it seemed to wear down quickly. The original Lip Mask lasts all night for me, but the Lip Balm only stayed on for two hours, tops. It felt more like a film of product on the lips than something imparting real moisture or nourishment to my lips.

While I’m a huge fan of the brand’s original Agave Lip Mask, this fell short for me. It just did not seem to keep my lips hydrated or restored; my lips felt dry and never seemed in good condition during the three weeks I used this for. As soon as I stopped using it, within a few days of going back to my normal routine (Jack Black Lip Balm during the day, Clarins Lip Balm at night unless it was a lip-swatching-bonanza kind of day, then Bite’s Agave Lip Mask), and my lips felt and looked so much better.

Bite Beauty Sugar Lip Scrub ($18.00 for 0.26 oz.) is supposed to use a mix of “raw brown sugar, pineapple enzymes and exotic oils” to “clean, exfoliate, and condition lips.” It was esay to apply to the lips, as I just took a bit on a clean spatula and patted it onto lips, added water (which made it milky and thinned out the consistency), and it removed fairly easily.

The sugar granules were large, and they did not seem particularly plentiful–I felt like there was more of the thicker, syrupy base. I didn’t feel like it exfoliated well, and since the oils and the like are only on for a minute or so, they didn’t leave my lips feeling hydrated either. There was also some bitter taste afterward that was unpleasant (though it smelled like sugar and vanilla in the pot). I would always have to go back to actually exfoliate my lips, either with another lip scrub or even just using a hand towel. It was more effective to rub the excess skin off my lips with my fingertip than it was using this scrub.

I had the balm on my wishlist as a possible replacement to FRESH sugar lip balm since it’s $6 cheaper, but after reading this I’ll stick with FRESH :/

Yikes! Bite really failed with this pair of products. Whatever curiosity or interest I *may* have had has been quashed. Which is perfectly alright, as I am a Jack Black lip balm fan, too. And also have a really good lip scrub I got in an Ipsy bag made by Jelly Pong Pong: Coffee & Coconut.

I’m sorry to hear that this didn’t work out, but it makes me wonder if there’s a problem with stick balms in general. My HG balm is Nuxe Reve de Miel, but I don’t find the stick version to be even half as good as the potted version. There has to be something involved in the process of setting the balm so that it’s solid enough to form a bullet that also lessens its potency as a balm.

Precisely my experience as well! The stick form just lacks the thick consistency and nourishing/healing properties that makes me feel like applying layers after layers of nothingness onto my lips. In fact, my lips never agree with stick lipbalms no matter what the brand is, worst case scenario is that those even make my lips peeled and even more chapped.

Thanks for the info, Christine. I bought the lip balm at the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in Toronto, and it’s been ok so far, but I’m also totally not the target audience. My lips don’t get particularly dry, so I keep it at work for the odd application. I think next time, though, I’ll find alternatives.

I’m actually really enjoying the new Sephora brand lip balms – there’s a goji berry one and an almond one that I have, as well as a honey exfoliator one – they keep selling out and I like them, but I’d be super curious to see what you think of the whole line!

Just to add my two cents, I’ve had a really different experience with these products (I know everyone’s body chemistry is unique, etc.) The lip balm has been super moisturizing on my lips, and I can still feel its effects on my lips for about six to eight hours after I have first put it on.

But now I will add a theory as to why this product may have worked for me. Up until recently I was an “addicted” to chapstick type of person and the only thing that seemed to hydrate my lips were products with a petroleum jelly base, which I would need to apply every couple hours. No natural lip balm ever really worked. A couple months ago though, I finally weened myself off all petroleum jelly/mineral oil based lip products. It wasn’t fun or easy, my lips got really dry, and I would slather them with Alba Bontanicals UNpetroleum jelly. Finally though they came back to life and I have to say that now the natural lip balms work on me. I don’t know if you use lippies with p-jelly, but maybe our bodies just get used to certain ingredients.
Sorry these didn’t work out for you though!

Certain ingredients could, of course, work better for some and not as well for others! ๐Ÿ™‚ I love Bite’s Agave Lip Mask, though!

p-jelly is in/ the base of Jack Blacks lip balms. I for the most part weaned myself onto the Biteโ€™s Agave Lip Mask and find Jack Black or EOS doesn’t work as well in the winter months right now.

I’m not surprised by the sugar scrub not working, but I might try the balm as I’m not liking the Burts Bee’s formula I’m trying at $10CAN at the moment during the day either.

Hmm, I bought a tube of the lip balm when it first came out and I use it every night and I still have most of the tube left. I wonder if the texture of my tube is different. I also don’t feel it drags on my lips and it’s fairly hydrating for me. Then again, I don’t swatch or test lipsticks all day long either. Not sure how long it lasts since I apply it just before I go to sleep.
I also apply when I start to do my makeup so that by the time I get to my lipstick my lips are well moisturized.
I really like this lip balm a lot.

Well you’ve sold me on trying the Clarins over this! I Googled it and see they have a version in a blue tube and a white tube. Which do you recommend?

Well, I think since they have released such amazing products(I know you adore the Amouse Bouche line) and I personally absolutely love their products too so whenever there is a launch, we have incredibly high hopes. BITE has defitnitely set the bar high for themselves so we can easily disappointed. But then again, you cannot always get it right all the time. I think I will not be purchasing this but I do empathize for them. Look on the bright side, they released the lip treatment then the lip liners so quickly :))))))))))

The lip balm seems to have mixed reviews, so that might be worth checking out for those who are big fans of Bite! The Lip Scrub seemed to have a lot of similar complaints (and it’s definitely the type of product one can make, or acquire, for way less).

Much as I love Bite’s original lip mask and probably had the same initial feeling as many others – “YAY, an easier-to-apply version” – having read this review, I’ll pass on both products and stick with the original mask and with Fresh lip scrub.

You know it’s odd, I love their lipsticks, pencils, and glosses but I HATE their other products! The agave lip mask makes my lips PEEL and blister. Which is super crazy since I use other lanolin products with no issue. I figured these other ones might do the same thing so I just have completely avoided even thinking about them. Seems like a good choice on my part! How can they make such kick ass formulas and suck so hard at balms?

How funny… and painful, Erin! I would have suspected the lanolin, too, but as you said, you have no issues with it in other products!

I know that this comment only relates to me but something in Bite’s formula really irritates my lips. In their lipstick and also in their agave lip mask. It literally makes my lips “seep” with clear liquid. Gross I know, but maybe someone else has the same reaction and didn’t know where it came from.

Have you looked through the ingredient lists for the products you’ve tried and noticed if there are any that are ones that you don’t think you’ve had in lip products before?
