Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Carbon…the only black eyeshadow I’ve ever bought on purpose (as opposed to blacks that happen to be in any of the palettes I own).

I’ve had it forever. Never used it. Don’t even remember why I bought it, especially because I never wear black eyeshadow. I just know that it’s sitting in the back of a drawer gathering dust. Lol

Well said, Ivana. And MAC persists in putting it in so many of their premade palettes, which makes those palettes a poor value purchase since I’d never use it. And to add insult to injury, while they retain Carbon, they d/c Typographic (not a true black but still such a much better shadow).

It really comes down to what it’s used for. There are several black eyeshadows that are great for packing on the lid (too many to list individually), but they’re too pigmented to use in the crease. For that, I love MAC Carbon; it’s thin/dry enough to deepen the crease/crease shade, and when used on top of another shadow, I find it blends out nicely, especially if I build it up in thin layers. I realize not everyone uses black eyeshadow on a regular basis, but as someone who incorporates black eyeshadow at least 85% of the time, I can appreciate the formula, and am willing to take a few extra minutes to use it. I very rarely use black on the entire lid, so i can’t really say what works best for that, as I typically just work with what’s in a given palette, and always over a black cream base…
