Benefit Rockateur Box o' Powder Review, Photos, Swatches

Benefit Rockateur Box o’ Powder ($28.00 for 0.17 oz.) is described as a “rose gold.” Rose gold is a fairly apt way to describe it; it’s a mix of pink, beige, and brown with slight warm undertones and a satiny shimmer. It is darker than rose gold to me; and of course, the low shimmer makes it less shiny and metallic. There is a very sparkly overlay that can be brushed away after one use (or, if you prefer, brushed away before using). MAC Taste Your Senses is a cream product, less shimmery. Edward Bess Secret Affair is lighter, pinker. Tom Ford Love Lust is more shimmery, pinker. Urban Decay Naked Flushed is more matte, pinker. MAC Stereo Rose is slightly lighter, more shimmery. MAC Light Year is lighter, more shimmery. See comparison swatches.

The texture is softer than any Box o’ Powder I’ve tried, and frankly, the texture feels quite different than the other shades, too. It is sumptuously soft and velvety, and it almost feels like an incredibly finely-milled baked product.  It has a baked feel, but it’s more finely-milled and smoother than traditional baked products. It’s rather like Laura Mercier’s Illuminators and Estee Lauder’s Gelees.  The color payoff was true-to-pan and buildable, so it could be applied at full intensity or applied with a lighter hand for something softer.  It has a very subtle satin finish that becomes more and more glow-inducing as it gets blended and buffed into the skin.  When I wore it, Rockateur lasted well for eight hours and started looking faded after nine hours of wear.  I didn’t notice it emphasizing pores or skin imperfections.

Just a heads up: this contains significantly less product than other Box o’ Powders (which are 0.25 or 0.28 oz. usually) at 0.17 oz., though the price is the same.

I actually like this a bit more than I thought I would based on the description. I wish these boxed powders lasted longer on me. Coralista is one of if not my favorite blush but it only lasts a few hours so I find myself not wanting to wear it often. Instead I’ve been using tarte and saving up for higher end blushes.

Looks lovely, but they are shrinking their product size and keeping the price the same again? I remember when their boxed blushes were almost .5oz.

Am I the only one who can’t get over the packaging of Benefit? The boxes are so bulky.

By the way, I am a longtime lurker first time commenter. I joined the website today and I am in LOVE. I love the Vanity and wishlist features!

Anna Avatar

Ann, absolutely loved your comment, esp the “longtime lurker first time commenter” part. Baha! But me too. Definitely agree with your thoughts about Benefit’s packaging.

I just got this yesterday (as gratis) and haven’t put it on yet because I can’t get past the super strong perfumed smell. It is way too strong and scents in makeup are so unnecessary as it is. That is why I love Tarte & Smashbox. No synthetic fragrances!

Love Benefit (used to, anyways, if this nonsense keeps up) and this looks like something I would be all over…but why so much less for the same price? I despise when companies try to fool us like that and it’s not fair to the consumer; these “hidden” mark ups count on us not paying attention or realizing that we just paid more for less.

The PRODUCT is lower in quantity because it seariously Last forever. Like you will be using this for years! Because it is really dense, not like ordinary powders!!

Christine, do you know when Rockateur will be available for purchase in stores? I hear it will available in Benefit stores this Tuesday, but do you know about Sephora or Macy’s?

Thanks! 🙂

Can you think of something darker that will give a similar look when applied lightly?
I have Estee Lauder’s Sensous Rose, would you say this is more or less likely to show up easily?
Thanks. 🙂

Kellie Avatar

It was for sale on Sephora, and now doesn’t even show up in the search box. I added it to my cart, and its gone!

I wonder if it wasn’t supposed to be up for sale yet

This blush is really pretty! I didn’t think I was going to like it, but darn it, I do! Surprisingly, I don’t have anything like it in my stash so I guess that means I need it. 😉

I love the color, but I’m a little confused about why they’re shrinking the size of some blushes but not others. I got Sugarbomb about six months ago and it came with a ton of product-0.42oz, and still does, as far as I know. Then Dallas has 0.32 oz, and all the others have 0.25-0.28oz, and then this one has only 0.17 oz

Helena Avatar

I actually saw this on Benefit’s mobile site about a month ago (web development error?) and have been wondering since what this would be like, so thanks for the review! The amount in the box is disappointing, even though the Boxes already have variances in sizes–why do different ones come in different amounts, anyway?–but I love this type of texture so on the wish list it goes.

Mel Avatar

I am def keen on this as I love anything rose gold!
My holy grail blush/contour is Benefit’s ‘Dallas’ I just love it to death and if I get wind that they are discontinuing it I will have to go out and by 10 of them!

I disagree with some of the comments left regarding benefit box o powders….I think that the packaging is nifty and sturdy and in terms of bang for your buck, my current one was purchased in 2009 and its still going strong even though I use it most days.

beck Avatar

Yeah I will be passing even though it looks gorgeous on
Christine, loving the shade. Charging the same for far
less product, nahh…SKIP. I also find the packaging to be
tacky, such a shame I might forgo the terrible packaging
design if they were not gouging their customers.

Shelly Avatar

Wow .17 oz that is even less than a Lancôme highlighter. I think that alone will keep me from getting this. Do you feel the formula warrants such a decrease in amount for same price ? I searched it and walked away when I saw the gram amount 😉

Anais Avatar

It’s so pretty, but do you think it would show up on darker skin tones or only as a highlighter? It looks lovely on you, but since you listed “Naked Flushed” as a dupe (which doesn’t show up on me) it makes me hesitant.

Mrs McG Avatar

I would love to hear how this compares to Estee Lauder’s gelee in Tease. I was lucky enought to get Tease and am wondering how similar they are or if I also need to purchase Rockateur..lol. Love your site and would greatly appreciate your feedback! 🙂

Rachel Avatar

I’ve found the dupe! I was about to cave and buy the darn thing, but spotted an Ulta blush that looked very similar. I swatched them side by side and they are IDENTICAL! The blush is called Tiger Lily.

Hey Christine, I know this post is older, but I was wondering if Rockateur could work as a highlight? EmilyNoel on YouTube said it would be best for that use because the pigment sheers out on skin o I wanted to get your opinion too!
Thanks!
