Benefit Rockateur Box o' Powder Review, Photos, Swatches
Benefit Rockateur Box o’ Powder
Benefit Rockateur Box o’ Powder ($28.00 for 0.17 oz.) is described as a “rose gold.” Rose gold is a fairly apt way to describe it; it’s a mix of pink, beige, and brown with slight warm undertones and a satiny shimmer. It is darker than rose gold to me; and of course, the low shimmer makes it less shiny and metallic. There is a very sparkly overlay that can be brushed away after one use (or, if you prefer, brushed away before using). MAC Taste Your Senses is a cream product, less shimmery. Edward Bess Secret Affair is lighter, pinker. Tom Ford Love Lust is more shimmery, pinker. Urban Decay Naked Flushed is more matte, pinker. MAC Stereo Rose is slightly lighter, more shimmery. MAC Light Year is lighter, more shimmery. See comparison swatches.
The texture is softer than any Box o’ Powder I’ve tried, and frankly, the texture feels quite different than the other shades, too. It is sumptuously soft and velvety, and it almost feels like an incredibly finely-milled baked product. It has a baked feel, but it’s more finely-milled and smoother than traditional baked products. It’s rather like Laura Mercier’s Illuminators and Estee Lauder’s Gelees. The color payoff was true-to-pan and buildable, so it could be applied at full intensity or applied with a lighter hand for something softer. It has a very subtle satin finish that becomes more and more glow-inducing as it gets blended and buffed into the skin. When I wore it, Rockateur lasted well for eight hours and started looking faded after nine hours of wear. I didn’t notice it emphasizing pores or skin imperfections.
Just a heads up: this contains significantly less product than other Box o’ Powders (which are 0.25 or 0.28 oz. usually) at 0.17 oz., though the price is the same.

I actually like this a bit more than I thought I would based on the description. I wish these boxed powders lasted longer on me. Coralista is one of if not my favorite blush but it only lasts a few hours so I find myself not wanting to wear it often. Instead I’ve been using tarte and saving up for higher end blushes.
It’s funny because I thought for sure I was going to hate this, but I actually love it!
It contains half the product than the regular Benefit blushes and still has the same price tag? I’m definitely passing.. I’m not paying 30-something euros for 5 grams of blush in a cardboard box.
Looks lovely, but they are shrinking their product size and keeping the price the same again? I remember when their boxed blushes were almost .5oz.
i knowww!! that’s why i stopped buying benefit blushes 🙁 its expensive and less product 🙁
I read in beaut.ie that the texture of the blush is the reason there is less product, even though the box is regular sized. Also, the brush is supposed to be specially designed for this powder.
Should you care to read the hole article, here it is http://beaut.ie/2013/benefit-respond-to-rockateur-we-respond-back/
Oh so pretty ! Shame it’s got less product in it though I am still tempted by it, if the quality is better I think it’s still a good value in comparison to the others 🙂
Am I the only one who can’t get over the packaging of Benefit? The boxes are so bulky.
By the way, I am a longtime lurker first time commenter. I joined the website today and I am in LOVE. I love the Vanity and wishlist features!
Thank you, Ann!! Happy you’ve joined us <3
Thanks for the welcoming! I really enjoy your website and it is by far the best place for all things beauty!
Aw <3 <3 You are too kind, Ann!!
Totally agree on that 🙂
Ann i completely agree I cant stand the packaging! it is hard to store and it is hard to get your brushes into that tiny box!
Ann, absolutely loved your comment, esp the “longtime lurker first time commenter” part. Baha! But me too. Definitely agree with your thoughts about Benefit’s packaging.
I don’t like benefits packaging either. I don’t particularly like cardboard packaging and it seems a bit adolescent to me.
Oh I like this… I shouldn’t be adding things to my wish list seeing as how I’m currently trying to downsize my collection.
Christine, is this meant to be a blush, a bronzer, a contour powder, an all over illuminator or all of these?
Hi Mariella,
You can really use it as you please, but Benefit makes it sound primarily like a blush. For medium or darker complexions, it could work as a highlighter.
That looks really pretty. How do you think it would work for a someone around MAC NC 44?
I think it would to add a light flush and glow – more glow than an intense blusher.
Lot ‘o dupes for this one, but it’s pretty nonetheless
Is there a strong scent to this powder? I can’t come near Bella Bamba.
Floral… I want to the same scent as Hervana.
I just got this yesterday (as gratis) and haven’t put it on yet because I can’t get past the super strong perfumed smell. It is way too strong and scents in makeup are so unnecessary as it is. That is why I love Tarte & Smashbox. No synthetic fragrances!
Wow, this is lovely! The “rock” text is a bit cheesy, but otherwise the packaging is neat the the shade itself is stunning. Look great on you!
What a lovely shade! Is it limited edition, Christine? 🙂
Permanent!
Love Benefit (used to, anyways, if this nonsense keeps up) and this looks like something I would be all over…but why so much less for the same price? I despise when companies try to fool us like that and it’s not fair to the consumer; these “hidden” mark ups count on us not paying attention or realizing that we just paid more for less.
Rumored that it’s because the materials cost more for this formula, but personally I’d rather them market it as something else then, so it’s clear it’s a one-off AND a different formula.
The PRODUCT is lower in quantity because it seariously Last forever. Like you will be using this for years! Because it is really dense, not like ordinary powders!!
Very pretty ! Golden rose cheeks !
Christine, do you know when Rockateur will be available for purchase in stores? I hear it will available in Benefit stores this Tuesday, but do you know about Sephora or Macy’s?
Thanks! 🙂
I don’t have an in-store date, but I imagine soon!
pbi but its at hsn and ulta now and will be at sephora and benefit website in sept. hth:)
Oh my goodness, thats so beautiful ♥
pretty but … same price less product … no like it :S to bad benefit!
Oh no! Now I have to have this! Thanks for the review, Christine!
No prob, Alyza!
Can you think of something darker that will give a similar look when applied lightly?
I have Estee Lauder’s Sensous Rose, would you say this is more or less likely to show up easily?
Thanks. 🙂
More likely 🙂
Off topic: love your earrings!
Thank you!! <3
yayyyy I was hoping to see a review on this from you soon! I saw this on HSN and fell in love with it! Do you know if its available at sephora/ulta yet?
It was on ULTA last night when I was writing up the review!
It was for sale on Sephora, and now doesn’t even show up in the search box. I added it to my cart, and its gone!
I wonder if it wasn’t supposed to be up for sale yet
It seems like it isn’t, but ULTA had it up last night!
This is gorgeous! I think I’ll get this and just blend it together with the blush from the naked palette instead of buying Tom Ford’s Love Lust.
Christine, how does Rockateur compare to Laura Mercier’s Rose Rendezvous and Dior Amber Diamond?
It’s not like either!
This blush is really pretty! I didn’t think I was going to like it, but darn it, I do! Surprisingly, I don’t have anything like it in my stash so I guess that means I need it. 😉
I love the color, but I’m a little confused about why they’re shrinking the size of some blushes but not others. I got Sugarbomb about six months ago and it came with a ton of product-0.42oz, and still does, as far as I know. Then Dallas has 0.32 oz, and all the others have 0.25-0.28oz, and then this one has only 0.17 oz
This actually looks very similar to me, as MAC Peachykeen blush. Pretty but don’t need it, especially for the size and price.
I actually saw this on Benefit’s mobile site about a month ago (web development error?) and have been wondering since what this would be like, so thanks for the review! The amount in the box is disappointing, even though the Boxes already have variances in sizes–why do different ones come in different amounts, anyway?–but I love this type of texture so on the wish list it goes.
I am def keen on this as I love anything rose gold!
My holy grail blush/contour is Benefit’s ‘Dallas’ I just love it to death and if I get wind that they are discontinuing it I will have to go out and by 10 of them!
I disagree with some of the comments left regarding benefit box o powders….I think that the packaging is nifty and sturdy and in terms of bang for your buck, my current one was purchased in 2009 and its still going strong even though I use it most days.
Yeah I will be passing even though it looks gorgeous on
Christine, loving the shade. Charging the same for far
less product, nahh…SKIP. I also find the packaging to be
tacky, such a shame I might forgo the terrible packaging
design if they were not gouging their customers.
I can always count on you to review the products I am dying to try! This blush is beautiful and I think I will purchase it. Thank you for the review !
I love Benefit Box O’Powder and this one is so pretty!! I have to stop me or I will buy all of them!
Wow .17 oz that is even less than a Lancôme highlighter. I think that alone will keep me from getting this. Do you feel the formula warrants such a decrease in amount for same price ? I searched it and walked away when I saw the gram amount 😉
Searched was to be swatched dog-gone auto correct :p
Hey Shelly,
I think it’s nice, and I don’t think you’d run out quickly – a lot of products give you more than you really “need,” but it matters more if you’re the type that finishes products or not!
It’s so pretty, but do you think it would show up on darker skin tones or only as a highlighter? It looks lovely on you, but since you listed “Naked Flushed” as a dupe (which doesn’t show up on me) it makes me hesitant.
Mostly highlighter, not so much blusher.
I would love to hear how this compares to Estee Lauder’s gelee in Tease. I was lucky enought to get Tease and am wondering how similar they are or if I also need to purchase Rockateur..lol. Love your site and would greatly appreciate your feedback! 🙂
Tease is cooler-toned – Tease is more like a pinky-plum!
Thanks for the great review. Is it similar to Nars Madly or Tarte Exposed? Thank you.
Rockateur is much warmer, slightly pinker, and wayyy more shimmery than both of those, which are very brown!
How does it compare to Brunette MSF?
Brunette seems a little rustier – browner/redder.
I’ve found the dupe! I was about to cave and buy the darn thing, but spotted an Ulta blush that looked very similar. I swatched them side by side and they are IDENTICAL! The blush is called Tiger Lily.
Hello, I write from Canary Islands in Spain. Every time I have a good opinion of some product, I turn to your post. We are like-minded, and always agree contigo.Gracias for your opinions. Much kisses with affection.
Thank you so much, Cristina! 🙂
Hey Christine, I know this post is older, but I was wondering if Rockateur could work as a highlight? EmilyNoel on YouTube said it would be best for that use because the pigment sheers out on skin o I wanted to get your opinion too!
Thanks!
Yes, it can definitely be used to highlight – just depends on the skin tone + brush!
Found a perfect drugstore dupe!
The Maybelline Master Hi-light blush in NUDE.
May even be a tad bit more pigmented.
