Alexis Bittar Liquid Gold Compact Mirror

Alexis Bittar Liquid Gold Compact Mirror ($42.00) is a medium-sized, heft 24 karat gold-plated compact mirror with Swarovski crystals. It has a very interesting, unique shape, and it is incredibly heavy, which makes it feel higher quality in the hand as it feels solid, but it’s not something I’d want to keep in a bag to use for touch-ups on-the-go. It might be a nice item to keep on a desk (or a vanity) for touch-ups at the office or the like, or if you normally carry a big purse, you might not mind the additional weight.

Given the metallic finish of it, fingerprints are easily seen, so ultimately, this is more like a paperweight or collector’s item. The quality of the mirrors seems exceptionally good; just really crisp and made me take mental note that it seemed like a higher quality compact overall. One mirror is normal, and the other side has a 2x magnification. It comes with a velvet, drawstring bag, so you can keep it in there for storage. The box itself is numbered, but the compact is not (wish it was engraved somewhere on it).

For what its worth I think the “Made in China” negative trope is pretty outdated. China has superior manufacturing processes than a lot of other countries now!

I was going to ask this too, Diana, but chickened out. Lol! But yeah, a great many things is made in China nowadays but I always hear this on several of the message boards that I sneak a peek at. I can’t help but wonder why. Does it have something to do with the country in general or is it in terms of quality?

Paige Avatar

I dont know if they meant for quality but for myself im am going vegan which means not buying a lot of my fav brands like estee lauder and mac because they test on animals, which is required in most of china for any brands that sell there.

This is beautiful, like something I can imagine The Little Mermaid would use! However, like you said, it’s probably not the most practical. Definitely more of a collector’s item!

Stunning mirror but I thank the heavens that I didn’t see nor hear about it when I was shopping on Sephora because knowing how swift my fingers were at the time, I would’ve gotten it despite not only its price but my lack of even needing one as I already have a pretty good compact mirror. I like its shape and coloring (Gold is a girl’s second best friend, after all…:)) but aside from that, I just can’t see myself getting it. Rather save that $42 for another Tom Ford Lips & Boys lipstick…lol!

It’s cute and gets the job done in terms of making sure I don’t look like Bozo the Clown when applying lipstick or lip balm in a location other than the restroom or my bedroom but I find it uproariously sad that I get more glistening out of a Ring Pop than it.

Very elegant! If I bought this, I would keep at my desk, so if I dropped it, it would hit the carpet and not shatter. But if it did, I guess you could use as a paperweight

Katherine reminded me of one of the main reasons I should not get this – I am notorious for dropping/abusing my compact mirrors. Even if I had this on my desk I would end up knocking it off and for that price…nope! Even though it does look like Ariel’s oyster. 🙂

Compacts properly designed and unique are very pretty like this one. I don’t think this price is ridiculous. Some of Tory Burch’s accessories are ridiculously priced like her lipstick holder. I don’t like the fact that it is made in China, but everything is made there now. I bought a compact from Stratton of England for $175, 30 years ago and I still have it. It holds loose powder on one side and a mirror on the other. What was I as a teenager thinking then?. A small keepsake occasionally bought is a good thing.

I picked this up during the 20% friends and family sale, and am very pleased with it. Like you suggested, I keep mine at my desk at work. It’s so luxurious!

I would honestly be way too freaked out to use this. Scratches, and the fear of the plating wearing off, yikes! I’m not a fan of gold plating. In my culture we buy only real (for lack of a more suitable word) 24 kt. gold jewellery. This is odd to me. I just can’t see it as truly luxe.

Sarah Avatar

Haha, oh yeah, definitely!!!That would be something to see though! I know the plating is for price and cost consideration, but I just hold a bias against anything plated!

Christina, in your opinion how much like an oyster does it look? Exactly like an oyster or inspired by an oyster or oyster-like from only some angles? Some of the pics look more oyster-ish than others. (My wife and I got married on Cape Cod, so if it is truly oyster, it might make a good present.)

I’m torn on whether to purchase the magic golden space potato.

On the one hand I’ve begun to amass a collection of Sephora’s lovely pocket mirrors and the display case is rather nice. I’ve toyed with this in the store and it feels hefty, substantial, and luxurious. I’m not terribly bothered by the price as a one-time splurge.

On the other hand I am the daughter off a gold miner and have worked at a gold mine. I know all of the work that goes into extracting gold from the Earth and, while gold is mostly mined for jewelry and decadent aims it is also highly valued for conductive properties in electronics. I see all of the gold items at Sephora this season as flippant misuses of what is actually a pretty remarkable and useful element. Then again, gold has been used stupidly for centuries. (Hundred-dollar gold-flake face masks, anyone?)

I’ll probably end up getting it but appreciating it more because I know how it was made. ^_^;

When I saw this and read your review, I immediately remembered Hello Kitty’s one (that shame) and said to myself: “Oh, this is truly an elegant and high quality mirror, of an innovative design”. Nevertheless, one of my dreams ever since I was a child is a set with a mirror and a hair brush made of sterling silver in Victorian style to keep on my vanity. It’s absolutely a gorgeous jewelry for whole life, which we can leave an inheritance for our daughters and granddaughters as well.

Although I did not purchase this compact, I did buy the Alexis Bittar + Sephora brushes during the VIB Sale, and they are beautiful, soft, functional and very luxurious. They were a splurge, but I love them.
