What kind of wear and longevity do you look for in an eyeliner? What's most/least important?

9-10 hour wear would be ideal, and if it smudges, that would be a deal-breaker. I don’t mind even fading/the line thinning over time, and I’m not pressed about waterline wear. I will give up some longevity for ease of removal.

I’d like 10 to 12 hours without significant fading. For my waterline, nothing has come close to the Marc Jacobs skinny liners – those lasted pretty much the whole day on my upper waterline without making a lot of gunk in the inner corners of my eyes. I’d love to find something that even comes close to those!

10 hours without significant fading. My favorite part of my makeup routine is using a pretty color on my waterline, even more than eyeshadow these days (ageing lids, etc), I wore Marc Jacobs highliners exclusively every day for years.

The ones that I use for my upper tightline and my winged upper lashline MUST be bulletproof, as I have issues with tearing eyes with a rather odd pH.
However, for the more colorful lower lashline (and sometimes even upper lashline, too), I just need it to be transfer proof, allergy tear proof, and not prone to smudging or moving around.
Everything able to make it through a long day (10-14 hours) when necessary without flaking off, disappearing, or looking messy is what I look for and expect.

They ALL transfer on me on the upper lid (hooded and deep-set eyes), regardless of prep or powdering over. Otherwise, that would be my highest priority. So that leaves the following: no stinging when my eyes water, no flaking, and even wear.

As one of the mourning widows of the Marc Jacobs liners, the closest I’ve come to performance has been Beauty Pie’s Ultra Color Pro Gel Eyeliners. I haven’t tried all of the colors, but I’ve been truly impressed by the performance of the Molten Bronze shade.

All day, no flaking or skipping (when I put it on). I don’t use eyeliners much as I tend to think they make more mature (in age) women looked harsher or older (at least on me I feel it does). So if or when I do use them I prefer to use plums, charcoal or brown. I general I line with darker eye shadows.
