How do you successfully resist beauty products?

I really think about whether I have anything similar already and how happy I am (or not) with what I already have, and I usually find that tempers the want for something new.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

I have to talk myself down, use money as the “stick.” I decided for some reason that I wanted a coral pink lipstick. One brand has one, so I had a hard talk with myself and will not purchase it until there is sale.

It helps being a non-tempted in general. 😅 I’m the kind of person that can sit people eat their favorite food and won’t get cravings. If I don’t need it, I don’t wanted.

I guess for me it’s more a thing of finding the perfect product for me. There was a time when every concealer release tempted me… I wanted them all. But the 5-10% that were actually good for me were never way better than my old time favorite. So when things tempt me I remind myself that I have a product I love and buying something new it’s just taking a risk and most likely not liking it as much.

Also, for me forcing myself to first look at the product in stores helps me a lot. Most times things seem so tempting online or from reviews, but I am very picky. Once I get in the store I find something I don’t like with the texture or packaging. 😅

Generally I find it easy to resist beauty purchases because so many really don’t suit me – I don’t go in for overly colourful eye palettes as many of the shades these days contain lots of either matte or orangey/pink red shades. And I don’t wear pink, coral, burgundy or plum lipsticks.
I only use one mascara, blush and setting powder at a time too. No highlighters or bronzers – so that takes care of that.
The eyeshadow palettes I do buy are often gifts on behalf of my adult sons, who always want to know what to get me for my birthday, Christmas and Mother’s Day. Every now and again I will purchase one (like PMG’s Subliminal Platinum Bronze) as it was one of the only one’s of Pat’s I really liked and it was a total surprise to see it in our local Sephora.
My days of purchasing random beauty items are well and truly over.

Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to beauty products. That and the fact that I have enough product to last several lifetimes and be passed on to the next generation. I also watch for sales such as Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty.

For me it’s constantly editing and organizing what I do have .It reminds me of what I already have enough of and what I haven’t used for awhile and what needs to be purged.

It’s easy nowadays. If it’s not something I’d use weekly or if it’s redundant to something I already have I can put it off and eventually forget.

As Rachel said……. avoiding beauty youtube is key for me too! Also I look at all I have….. a ton! I honestly don’t need anything for years….. have backups on the daily’s ……. sometimes I will see something I like but pretty easy to talk myself out of it….. also my interests are else where…… more important things to focus on now!…….. I’m sure most people can relate!

Since covid we have rarely gone out so my makeup has hardly been used so I haven’t had the need to purchase much. But usually I just know what I own and what I am lacking and I am pretty good about keeping my purchases to a need only basis. (Unless something really unusual and beautiful is released then I might lose my mind for a second or two then it’s too late and the money is spent!)

I just follow what I always read people saying: do I need it? Do I have something similar? Is it an impulse buy? If so why? I look at YouTubers decluttering and it amazes me. Literally thousands of dollars in makeup. I think watching a decluttering is an eye opener.

My wake up call was during the 2020 lockdowns. I had to get rid of alot of makeup and assess my actual needs. Since then I haven’t purchased any thing except for replacement eyebrow pencils, eye brow gels, concealers, face powder and mascaras.

To fight the urge to buy any eyeshadow I just open my make up drawer. That will chock any urges immediately.
