Have you enjoyed the slow down of new product releases?

Mostly! It’s a little weird not having as much “must review” items at a given time, but it has given me more room to explore new brands or to review brands that aren’t as high of a priority.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Overall, I have enjoyed it. All the releases were becoming a bit overwhelming, and I’ve been enjoying my collection more, looking at products or palettes and trying to dupe them with what I have. At the same time, I am really looking forward to new releases (ahem, SG x Temptalia)!

YES! It’s really highlighted the amount of waste created by the cosmetics industry as a whole following the fast fashion model. Puts front and center, yet again, the idea that putting the onus of recycling in the hands of consumers as the sole responsible party being incredibly ridiculous. We aren’t manufacturing tons (literally tons) of plastic packaging for ourselves. We’re not asking repeatedly for companies to churn out subpar trash just so we can throw it in a landfill. We, as regular people, can not recycle enough in our lifetimes to undo ten minutes at a Coca-cola plant, a year’s worth of releases from Colourpop, etc…Not to mention that we’ve been lied to about recycling programs in our cities for years now.

Aside from the waste creation and environment-ruining aspect….everything just looks like tired old junk now, right? Every palette looks basically the same. Every color story a tired one trotted out years ago. It feels very “old prostitute in a new dress” – whatever changes are purely superficial and easily seen. Having few releases has allowed us to examine our collections and rediscover the love for things we purchased before. It’s also meant I took a real long, honest look at my preferences and use and realize just how bloody long it takes to even put a dent in something, much less finish it.
So, yeah, super in to the few releases.

So many new releases come from brands that I don’t buy because they are not cruelty free so I tend to ignore them. But I like the fact that there is less noise out there because it allows more attention to smaller brands, which tend to be cruelty free.

Oh goodness,YESSS! It gives breaks in between that allow me to make wiser beauty purchases because the FOMO is down for a nice change. Those last couple years before the pandemic were like an out of control freight train of “new, new, new!” It was exhausting trying to keep up, yet try not to give into the hype and constant FOMO.

Yeah, it’s been nice to not feel tempted to buy things that I wouldn’t wear anyway.

(I hit the pandemic wall a few months ago and haven’t felt like wearing makeup for fun or video calls or anything. The last time I bothered putting on makeup for an early-morning video call my boss didn’t even want me to talk. I was so mad!)

Fewer releases means less temptation for me and, as Charlie said, it gives me more opportunity to enjoy that massive amount of cosmetics I’ve already purchased. I used to find it hard to keep up and I have always been in awe of your ability to keep abreast of and comprehensively review all the products you do, Christine.

I don’t follow new releases to close, and I prefer buying old favorites, I’m not tempted into buying all the new things.

But it has been refreshing not seeing all the beauty content creators rushing in with videos of first impressions on all the new releases (although recently we had a plethora of Urban Decay Wild West)… I’m much more interested in exploring old favorites… and even the new trend of videos “What went wrong with Becca?”.

Yes, I do appreciate the slowing down of releases as it gives you time to reflect and see what is worthwhile out there in the marketplace.
I also think that it gives you, Christine, some breathing space as well – which is something that I think you need as well.
I believe that there is no point in bringing out substandard products on a weekly basis (looking at you CP) and just creates such an environmental waste.

Yes, it had become too hectic with all the new releases and I was always afraid of missing out. In the past I used to buy the big colorful UD palette that came out every year around the holidays and use that plus a few smaller palettes I would get occasionally, so my collection was manageable. Then, large colorful palettes started dropping constantly from all kinds of brands and I felt had to get them all! But the slower pace has helped me evaluate what I have and do some decluttering. The vanity has been so helpful.

Until you brought it up I don’t think I’d realized the slow down, likely because everything has slowed down.
But totally.
I’ve been able to really step back and see how many products I have that do (virtually) the same thing, or are in the same vein.
I really believe this time is going to be a correction, a realization of what’s really necessary and 20 palettes or 20 highlighters and 50 lipsticks/glosses etc. are not necessary.
Honestly I’m bored with sameness and wary of flashiness.
Very little holds my interest, even my dogs ended up with more new clothing than I did this past year, their wardrobe varies more than mine, LOL.
Even our celebrations are more exciting for them, it’s my little girl’s first birthday today and you should see the pretty cake she has waiting for her! 🙂

Yes and no. It’s been nice to actually think I can afford to buy the things I want because there aren’t SO MANY. It’s also been nice to take a minute and use the things I have rather than just grabbing so much more.

I do hope, thought, that this isn’t the foreshadowing of a downhill slope for the industry. Becca is closing. Myali Beauty announced their closing – granted they never really got off the ground. A slowdown isn’t a bad thing, but a downturn isn’t so great.
