What draws you in first: the packaging or the color story?
The color story for sure! I can feel better or worse based on packaging, but I really don’t care that much about it as long as it’s functional!

Definitely the color story. Since I usually see products online first, I don’t know for sure what the packaging will be like anyway.
Absolutely, it’s the colour story. I don’t “collect” makeup for its packaging and to be honest, the simpler and plainer the packaging, the happier I am so long as it’s reasonably sturdy and functional.
Yes, exactly my feeling, Mariella!
Packaging!
When both the color story and packaging are beautiful together, I am pulled in!
For eyeshadow the color story draws me in, but if the packaging is ugly I won’t buy it. As for lip products, packaging matters a lot to me! I have to like both to buy something.
The color scheme is the first think that captures my attention, but this is somewhat resulting from the fact I like practical boring classic packaging. 😅
The shade of a lipstick or a blush, the colors in a palette are definitely the thing that entice me to consider a product. But if the packaging doesn’t match my standard, color in itself won’t make me buy it.
Absolutely the color story. Because I have to *want* to wear it, I have to be sure that these are shades I’d actually enjoy using/wearing and not something that would just sit around unused.
The color story. While I admire the artistry that goes into the best packaging, I don’t display my makeup so packaging does not motivate me to buy.
Ideally, the selection of products, the color story, and the packaging should all work together to form a cohesive collection. That being said, if the the colors don’t appeal, that would be a non-starter. I’ve seen some beautiful collections but, because the colors wouldn’t suit me, I let them pass.
For someone who appreciates The Ordinary’s plain white packaging, it would have to be the colour story that interests me the most. The packaging gets discarded anyway, but hopefully the colours and shades in the palette will remain for quite some time.
I first go for the color story, then the presentation in the package, then whether or not the packaging is sturdy, and well made or flimsy, and easy to keep clean.
Color story. Color is my drug. Fancy packaging is just icing on the cake.
Hmm…it can be both? I do pay particular attention to certain brands bc I like the typical packaging and am already familiar with the formula. For example, slim magnetic palettes with removable pans I can appreciate from Colourpop and Viseart . For other brands, the color story would have to draw me in first, then depending on the packaging, can be a deal maker/breaker. I’m done with clunky palettes.
Color story, it has to work for me, pretty packaging is just a bonus.
Color story. I need to make sure the shades won’t be too warm for me.
If I read this as the colour of the packaging vs. the design of the packaging?
Colour.
I’m not partial to certain colours, or more specifically jewel tones, in any aspect of my life, so a brand’s colours can deter me as a whole, but individual pieces may still make it into my collection if I love the product or it’s received rave reviews.
If I read this as the colour story of the makeup (lipstick, palette…) vs overall packaging?
Colour story, 99% of the time.
The color story!!!
Mostly the color story. Once in a while I am excited more about the packaging and can get sucked in and hope the color story is a good one.
It depends. For eyeshadow and blush, definitely color story. For lipstick, packaging usually gets me interested than color is the deciding factor.
