Eye sets can work for me; Wayne Goss’s eye set and Sonia G’s sky eye set are two examples that stand out. I find those two sets to be beautifully curated and buying them as sets saved me money in the end – and I use every brush.

Face sets however hardly work and I never purchase them. And almost all of them come with a fan brush! I know plenty of talented folks who love a good fan brush, but I am not one of them. I’d rather buy singles and create my own face set.

Eye sets I can usually make a go of and sometimes I find a pleasant surprise since I’ve been a minimalist when it comes to brushes. I did splurge and buy the Sonia G travel set. I travel a lot for work (when we can travel again) and have no high end brushes; it seemed cost effective of a per-brush basis.

It depends on how many brushes are included. Sephora Collection and Real Technique eye brush sets are my favorites because the brushes are both affordable and in the right quantity.

No. While sets are most cost efficient, I am very particular with my preferences, and rarely I have encountered sets where I’ll use all the brushes. Especially larger sets, that include speciality brushes I never use (like lip or brown brushes). And I hate waste, so I’d rather buy individually the brushes I know I like and use, in the sizes and shapes that fit my face.

But I do like the aesthetics of having a cohesive brush collection, so I tend to stick to brushes from a single brand.

Not at this point. Costco was offering a really well priced set of Sigma brushes a few weeks ago that caused me to think about the usefulness of sets. I purchased a Sonia Kashuk brush set from the Target sale rack about five years ago when I realized my application techniques needed improvement. Having a set allowed me to figure out which types of brushes worked for me and I did not spend much money so I remain pleased with the purchase but I don’t think I would recommend sets in general. Although these brushes were decent quality, I ended up upgrading all the eye brushes and I am left with brush types, like the fan brush. that I never use. Unless someone is just starting g out or really needs to replace several brushes, it’s better to go a la carte.

This is a good point, with buying a cheap set just to find what works for you. Especially when just starting applying makeup.
In my makeup journey I bought many brushes that I ended up not using just because they don’t work for me. I’m very picky with the size and shape, I really like and use few styles of brushes, but I always fell under the trap of buying a specific one just because a makeup artist or influencer liked them (well I don’t).

Ha ha! I like the idea of a brush set even if I don’t use every last brush. I started out with a Wayne Goss brush and then all heck broke loose and I ended up with a few sets of high end brushes. I use them and love them and I am not sorry that I bought them.

I love brush sets but only for less expensive brands. I also only get excited about eye ones because I am not wearing much face makeup lately. I like doubles as well and I have enough eye brushes to wear a week’s worth of makeup (new brushes every day) and do a bulk washing on my day off work.
Seems like a lot but the convenience is worth it to me and they don’t take up a ton of space.

Oddly enough my favorite brush of all time is a Mary Kay crease brush that came in a set whose exact shape I have not been able to find for sale since. I also am very fond of the brushes that came with various Urban Decay palettes (the double ended one with a packer on one side and a fluffy crease on the other). They are great for doing one and done shadow, just pack the color with one side and flip to blend it out.
