Has your application method for concealer changed over time? How?
I am more apt to use two different concealers–not just shades but formulas–for under eye concealing vs. covering up dark spots, acne, etc. I also use fingertips a lot more for diffusing and patting in concealer than I used to.
Yep- I use way way less! I also have been using a concealer that’s a bit richer than my skin tone to first color correct a bit then placing my brighter concealer just where I need it. It’s much more flattering on me I find.
Concealer is just about the only cosmetics product that I still buy with regularity. I try different application methods virtually daily. Never had much luck w/sponges. Concealer primer is out. The flat lay down brushes: no longer so much. The rounder concealer blending brushes, yes. I try not to touch, and apply it to the clean blending brush, but often just use the doe foot and dot it on. Often use 2 colors under eye, but never use it on the face. Little or ring finger press to settle it. Usually TM or foundation over. Setting/finishing depends on the weather/humidity and whether or not any is being used on the face.
When I was younger I didn’t use much concealer because I couldn’t be fussed and for the most part foundation could handle my under eyes just fine. These days I definitely do use under eye concealer. I have tried the triangle, but it doesn’t work with how deep set my eyes are. Heavy concealer + baking has never appealed to me because my under eyes can get really crepey, so I never attempted that trend. I have experimented with using a small concealer brush, but always go back to using my fingers, usually my middle or ring. It just melts into the skin. Sometimes I will do a little blending with a brush and then pat over with my finger for the best blending, but more often than not I only use my finger.
I used to just use a brighter shade. Then I was introduced to color correcting and for the past 5 years or so I tend to only use a peach color corrector. I have hereditary dark circles and deep set eyes, so if I only use a brightening concealer by itself it doesn’t conceal anything and just looks bad on me (in my opinion). I do sometimes mix a very very small pin point of a brightening concealer over the top of my color corrector, but only near the inner part of my eye under corners, not on the outside of my eye.
I never understood the triangle, it simply drags all my features down. I simply apply a dot of concealer in the inner and outer eye corner and blend in. Too much concealer it’s a recipe for creasing, no matter how much you bake and blend.
I started using concealer for my acne spots, but nowadays I use it only for my (genetically) dark eye circles. I find that foundation is enough for marks and spots, using concealer isn’t necessarily and I’m not looking into my skin looking 100% perfect, I feel like small imperfections have their own beauty.
What has really changed is that I apply concealer under my eyes before foundation, let it dry a little and get tacky, blend it in to get most coverage. I never layer both foundation and concealer, this helps a lot with creasing. Also, applying with fingers and the warmth of my hand works better for me than brushes and sponges. Off course, always set with powder and less is more.
After seeing so many YT’ers pounce their concealer in with a beauty sponge, I have been trying this method out myself for awhile.
My thoughts: it does do a better job of blurring out any edges of demarcation, but I’m still having to use my fingertips a bit for my aging undereye area in order to smooth it out and make it look less creased up there.
same. I apply little dots with my fingers and pat gently with my ring finger. Then blend with the sponge so there are no edges. I don’t quite understand the triangle thing or baking. I think I look better when I just apply a little and do a very simple application.
I use it more often under my eyes than I used to. As I get older, I’m getting more prone to dark circles there. When I was in my early teens, it was stick concealer, and trying to conceal zits before foundation. I quickly learned that for my oily skin, it worked better to conceal after powder and foundation. I didn’t use it for decades, depending on foundation coverage instead. When I started to again, I used liquids that dry down completely. I haven’t changed my application technique in the last 10 years.
I switched from using a MAC concealer brush or my fingertip to the Fenty concealer brush!
Yes. Best answered by this: since spending more time on skincare and taking the time to find what works for my skin, concealer isn’t really necessary. I might blend it around my nose area since the crevice on either side tends to get really red/dark, but more being spent on hyperpigmentation issues, etc… over the course of a few months means I can do without it.
I don’t actually use much concealer as my foundation does a decent job of covering the things I want it to. When I do use some, I use a lot less than I used to and I’m gravitating toward shades that are much closer to my foundation than lighter. I feel like the lighter shades do more to show off the things I’m trying to hide than actually hiding them.
