Thanks so much Christine! I have been a doing a lot more reading about this lately, especially in peer reviewed sources, to better understand how quality control and production issues are managed, and to understand how eyeshadows and other cosmetics are regulated. I have found some scientific papers demonstrating some issues – for example heavy metal contamination in some eyeshadows, and contamination of some lower end concealers in Korea with technetium. It has me thinking about what risks are present at each step of the cosmetic production process and how companies (large and small) mitigate this. Of all companies, I figure large corporations have the easiest go. Massive companies like Maybelline or Covergirl can perhaps they have in house chemists who can easily verify purity / quality of their source materials and products at various steps in the pathway but again this is just an educated guess because brands are not transparent to begin with as you said. The best evidence I can find toward this is how the Reuter’s expose revealed some of the testing capacities of Johnson and Johnson, indicating what these companies have funds for and are capable of doing (not too far a leap). Additionally, from my understanding, the FDA does not require cosmetic companies to submit samples for routine testing either. No doubt you are very busy – if you ever decide to cover or write on this issue, I would be very interested as I would love to be able to understand my makeup better and make safer purchases, especially with smaller companies
