  • Haul/Rediscoveries: Hoping to receive my NARS x Orgasm Collection order today! I bought and shipped Chanel hand cream and a shower gel to my grandmother for Mother’s Day.
  • Weekend plans: Keep cool. It’s been 100+ degrees this week, and I know there’s still 10-15 degrees to go until we hit real summer temperatures, but whew!
  • Favorite artist?: Agnes Cecile — we have prints of her work all over our house, and it’s a love that’s endured for almost a decade. I have some new prints coming next week that I’m excited to hang!

Haul: No beauty products, but I’ve been doing so much reading on my iPad during the pandemic that my eyes hurt, so I decided to buy the latest Kindle to see if that made a difference. It took a little while to figure out how to hold it comfortably, but I’m loving it now. The absence of backlighting and blue light makes a HUGE difference! Money well spent.

Weekend plans: Zoom happy hour with friends, reading, household chores. I’m really excited to see the season finale of Outlander!

Favorite artist: I don’t think I have one favorite artist, but the last exhibit I saw that really moved me was Patricia Nix. I especially love her found-object art.

Mariella Avatar

Haul: another bottle of Clarins Super Restorative Eye Cream, another tube of O’Keefe’s Overnight hand cream and I think that’s about it (not counting things like the newest issue of Threads magazine, etc.)

Weekend plans: I have a gorgeous hydrangea and some foxgloves to plant. We’re having a Zoom call with a group of friends who’ve all been close since university days tonight, and a Zoom call tomorrow with my mother in law who is in a seniors’ residence (she had a fall the other night and it’s thrown everything into even more topsy turvy-ness than it was before) and then we’re going into Toronto on Sunday to have a socially distanced Mothers Day coffee date with my younger son and his girlfriend.

Favourite artist: maybe Raoul Dufy just because there are some special memories of meeting my husband while looking at an exhibit of his paintings in a museum in Nice. Then last year, learning that the AGO has some his paintings in their collection was really nice.

Genevieve Avatar

Enjoy your socially distant Mother’s Day coffee with your son and his girlfriend tomorrow Mariella. We could only wave to our son, daughter in law and grandchildren from their car…tomorrow (Monday), the number of people we can associate with will be increased so they will able to come to our house then. Too bad it wasn’t in time for Mother’s Day.

No haul, not even food. Plans: hours reduced even further at night job, as a mgr is pretending she has symptoms, to get time off. Total BS. I had a guy ..with mask…stand too close to me, after he cut me in line. I put my arm out + said, ‘That doesn’t look like 6’ to me.’ He replies, ‘well, bitch, you look like you have it!’ So, of course, I said I did, and he had better back off. Btw, I do not. This pandemic Brings out the best in some people and the worst in others (me.) I’m just so sick of people disregarding the rules. If it weren’t for the impending storm, people would STILL be gathering at the nearby beach, despite parking being blocked off and tickets being given for non-residents. IDK. The sooner people abide by the guidelines, the better for all of us.
Artist? Hopper appeals to my emotions and psyche. My favorite has to be Hokusai. A Smithsonian program on the ‘crazy old picture man’ showed scientifically that a photo of a wave taken at 1/10,000 of a second really DOES look like the Great Wave Off Kanagawa. And there really IS a meteorological phenomenon of red Fuji, some Octobers, given the right conditions. Hokusai had an eye unlike any other. His works feature prominently in my tee shirts!

Ana Maria Avatar

It got worst with rules this week. People are socializing in groups around here, very careless about distancing, families are letting children play together even if theoretically playgrounds are closed, in my neighborhood there were some parties in the evening (both at people houses and young people in a parking lot) … it’s like everybody got tired of following the rules.

kjh Avatar

I KNOW! Despite taking the big activity set off the playground and having CAUTION tapes blocking all entrances, the bigger kids are still playing basketball. Not sure what to think is worst, risky bumping up against each other, not getting it/not caring/the invulnerability of youth: C’mon, it’ll never happen to me, or reinforcing their behavior if/when they do not get it. Makes me think of WW2, when people were said to pull together. People are so dreadful, self-involved now, that it’s hard to imagine people were more unified then. But, with the mixed messages, maybe I ought not be surprised. My stance at night retail job is take no prisoners. No mask, no service. OUT! But who knows what dangerous person you might provoke? This is tough on everyone. It would be nice if everyone could follow the detective’s creed: Everyone counts, or no one counts.

Ana Maria Avatar

Hope you are OK and keep being safe! I heard almost horror stories with retail people being physically and/or verbally harassed by costumers because they demanded them wearing masks.
Unfortunately many will fail to understand the gravity until them or someone they care about end up on a ventilator or worse (dying). 🙁
It’s not the black plague, but it’s not something to be careless about either.

Genevieve Avatar

A few weeks ago some golfers were carrying on about not being allowed to play gold (reason – middle aged and older men are hopeless about hand hygiene…). Our Premier said that he was sure the NY Governor Cuomo would love to have the issue of golf, rather than wondering whether he has enough space in the morgue… That shut some of them up.
Most people have been pretty good here where I live in the Outer East of Melbourne, but you always get some who just feel entitled and self absorbed.
I am sorry that you were spoken to so rudely kjh….

Celesta Avatar

Haul: Limecrime Venus XL2, CT Luxury Quad in Mesmerising Maroon, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia perfume, Rituel De Fille Celestial Eye Soot in Andromeda and Rare Creme Luminizer in Icebow, a new pair of Brooks Ravenna running shoes, and a few tops from my local Kroger that have really cute simple patterns and were 40% off.

Rediscoveries: I’ve been wearing L’Oreal Infallible 24HR Freshwear Foundation all week and I’ve loved it! Also, setting my face with a bit of loose powder. Who am I? Is this quarantine madness kicking in?

Weekend plans: No plans! Though, maybe I can convince my husband to get us some take out from Chuy’s for Mother’s Day because it just sounds good!

Favorite artist?: Alphonse Mucha. I’ve always loved Art Nouveau style and his use of color speaks to me. The women in his pieces are beautiful and elemental.

kjh Avatar

This sounds beyond nuts. I don’t have synesthesia, but if I look at a Mucha woman, I know what she smells like and smell it. Usually it’s an old Guerlain. Never anything more recent than the art. Rarely, it’ll happen with Klimt. It’s supposed to be smell that triggers memory, not visual that triggers smell, lol.

Lesley Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: Skin care and body care ordered a long time ago but finally arrived. Prescription tretinoin, Tazorac, and azelaic acid from All Day Chemists. Warm weather means getting back to the hard stuff. Specially packaged duo of Deborah Lippmann Rich Girl handcram ordered from Nordstrom, first wrong item was sent and then reshipment took forever. Some Shea Moisture items from Ulta.
Weekend plans: Staying home!

Favorite artist?: I don’t really have one. I love Japanese wood block prints (Hiroshige and Hokusai), art from the 1930’s, Cezanne, and Winslow Homer.

Lauren Avatar

Rediscovery: just using up my Clio Kill Cover Pink Cream.

Weekend plans: simul-watching a movie online with some friends, bingo with the fam via video chat, baking a pavlova maybe.

Favorite artist: if I HAD to whittle it down to one, then John Singer Sargent–with many, many runners-up.

Lauren Avatar

I am a sucker for airy or marshmallowy desserts. Raspberries sound amazing! I’ll use those next time. I make my pavlova with almond rather than vanilla, whip up some cream and serve it with blueberries and strawberries.

Genevieve Avatar

My mum made the best pavlova – the meringue would be crispy and chewy, the marshmallow bits yummy but not overly sweet. I just can’t do it the way she used to. Besides, I have ‘modern’ oven (not hot enough) and we had an old aga style oven that would really, really heat up – perfect for Yorkshire Puddings, scones etc.

Nancy T Avatar

Pretty much how I sleep, too, Mellan. All misconfigured and looking… interesting!

Haul: Placed an order with Ulta for some essentials, plus one treat. Real Techniques Beauty Sponge, Nyx Ever Slim Lip Pencil (my og went missing in my move), Makeup Revolution Conceal & Hydrate in C10, Jack Black Lip Balm, and Nabla Nude Cutie Palette (FINALLY).

Weekend plans: Attend a meeting at 10 a.m. tomorrow via Zoom. And keep hoping and praying that my son comes over to set up my Roku TV for me. I’ve been waiting 7 WEEKS!

Favorite artist? Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso for the viewing experience, but many fantastic photographers whose work I would rather decorate my home with. Like, Bill McKim in Belmar, NJ, for one example.

Ana Maria Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: Nothing new.

Weekend plans: Standing in line at the stores in the sun for my weekly groceries 😆 , regular cleaning and meal planning, cooking, calls with my mom and brother, etc. We’re having a heat wave in California and some state parks are opening… maybe I’ll have the courage the visit some redwoods… I miss long hikes in the redwoods…

Favorite artist?: Can’t choose between Auguste Rodin and Hieronymus Bosch… I also miss visiting museums…

Genevieve Avatar

One of the things I really, really miss is going for drives in the countryside and visiting and walking through the state parks. Visit the redwoods Ana Maria, it will do your soul good. As long as you don’t walk on a Fire Danger day…..
If your summer is going to be like ours was – lots of heatwaves in our spring and early summer meant stacks of bushfires down the whole East coast of Australia. Then for summer, we had a week of hot days, culminating in a massive 42 – 43 degree celcius day (105 – 110 deg F) and then huge thunderstorm, with quite a cold couple of days after. The pattern was weird.

AJ Avatar

My Daisy likes to lie the same way as Mellan! It makes her neck look really long so when she does it we call her a llama dog 🙂

Haul: My Melt Impulsive palette arrived! Definitely want to play with some of those colors.

Weekend plans: More of the same. Stay home, go to online dance classes. Get some sort of takeout for dinner one night. Pick up some cider. Go to virtual happy hour tomorrow night. Weather should be nice so we’ll do some yard work.

Favorite artist: I really like Janie Olsen! The studio I dance at does this cool thing where they always have art hanging up from local artists, like they’ll have a collection from a different artist every month or two. That’s how I discovered Janie Olsen, and every time they hang her work, we have to take time before class and go explore every painting and find our favorite little details. I bought one of her prints of a beautiful faerie woman in my bedroom.

Weekend plans: Celebrate Mother’s Day as best we can. My younger son and husband are going to make some incredible home made BBQ chicken and cheese pizzas.

Favorite artist?: Van Gogh always has my heart.

Rachel R. Avatar

Thank you so much, Genevieve! I had a nice, non-stressful day. It was beautiful outside. The kids and I watched a hilarious YouTube videos and chatted, hubby made a full breakfast, then I got some time to myself. The pizzas were amazing, and Brandon was really proud of making them with just a little help from my hubby. My brother did my chores for me and made me brownies. (I cheated a little on the diabetes diet, since it was a special occasion.) I was sorely behind on sleep, so I went to bed way early and actually slept long and well. I can’t ask for a better day than that.

Maggie Avatar

Hi Rachel, thank you for taking the time to meticulously type out your haul AND especially for listing the sales/deals. I actually checked out TheBalm right after reading your comments–it’s not something I’d have thought of doing if not for you. I got TheBalm Desert–I have totally forgotten that it was on my wishlist and I have been recently looking for a blushy bronzer and hope this does it for me.

Happy Mother’s Day, Rachel!

Rachel R. Avatar

Maggie, thank you! I had a nice Mother’s Day. I hope you had a great day, too! I’m so glad the sale info was useful to you. That’s why I list them, in case the info helps anyone. Balm Desert is fantastic. I think you’ll love it. It was the only blush/bronzer I took on a two week vacation in the desert last year, as we were camping, and it looked great with any lip color AND held up all day.

Haul: Nothing new this week. I did just get my first Sephora order from the sale. I haven’t had time to really use anything yet but hoping to have some time to play this weekend. I have added a couple of products to my wish list based off of the answer to today’s question about products or steps in skin care that have made the most difference.

Weekend: Again, nothing exciting here. Staying home and occasionally going to see my Mom and brother. Not sure about doing anything for Mother’s Day as everything is shut down and my nephew is daily getting exposed so not sure I want to around him and he lives with my Mom and brother. He is trying really hard to avoid people but has to work and his job is still there so no choice but to go to work.

Favorite artists: I really love Monet and most impressionist artists. I also collect pictures from the turn of the century woman’s magazines that had strong women portrayed. In prefer Harrison Fischer to Charles Gibson.

Genevieve Avatar

Dear Mellon, stretching out to beat the heat. I certainly know that feeling!

Haul: I dropped my beloved Covergirl blush (on its last legs) the other day and it all broke up on our tiled floor. So I had to rush to our local Priceline (a budget beauty shop here in Aus.) and bought a peach/coral blush from Models Prefer. So far, so good.
Rediscoveries: I am at the tail end of my palette a day…so I will be using my Naked palettes, which I have missed using.

Weekend Plans: Same old at the moment. We are starting our gradual getting out of lockdown process next week and it will be interesting to see what we are now able to do. I am hoping that we can see our families again and going for a drive – which I dearly miss. I also hope that schools start to reopen as it would be heavenly for Olivia to return to school and see her friends, and Lachlan to return to kinder (preschool here).
Mother’s Day is Sunday and my family have a lovely collection of skincare, perfume and lipsticks for me.

Favourite Artist: I don’t really have a favourite one, but I do like landscape paintings the best.

Nikki Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: No new purchases, but some of my Sephora spring sale items-Marc Jacobs Rebel Rebel gloss, Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Secret Salma, Liv It Up, and Electric Poppy lipsticks, Melt Millennial Pinx eyeshadow palette, and a backup tube of Sephora Green ON! mascara-arrived today. I also put a Clinique Pop Splash Fireberry gloss (I’ve worn this shade, but in the old Glosswear formula in my high school days, not in the new Pop Splash formula) in my Sephora basket this week-I won’t be making any new orders until the amorphous day that I get some financial stability back, but I want to make sure this gloss is in the basket so I won’t forget it when I can order again.
Weekend plans: Ride out the current cold and rainy spell that’s wreaking havoc with my allergies. Also the usual TV marathons.
Favorite artist?: I can’t decide between Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. What is clear, though, is that I love vibrant colors, in art and in makeup!

Kira Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: I received the PMG Naomi Kit, and the Sunset Seduction mini lust gloss trio. I see how Mothership Sublime is very similar to Mothership VII Divine Rose. I’m not sure I love this palette as much as the others, the textured shades are particularly dry and flaky in the one I received. Very flattering colors though, more pink, whereas Divine Rose is more peachy.

Weekend plans: Leave my apartment for the first time in two months to drop off my ballot at a mailbox, and also drop off a nasturtium I started from seed — for a friend with a brown thumb. I figured it grows easily and the flowering will be cheerful!

Favorite artist?: Probably still Yoko Ono.

Tracey E. Avatar

Haul: Belk (15% off) Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Modern Mercury Highlighting Powder. (It’s a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law who panned the ELxVB version. I was tickled to find it as I had no idea it was being released.) Ordered some Wayne Goss lip goodies from Beautylish; will report on that next week.

Rediscovery: Tom Ford Correcting Pen in Light. I finished a Bobbi Brown liquid corrector and replaced it with another, but saw I also had a TF Correcting Pen, which I once enjoyed, so it’s now it’s in the rotation.

Weekend Plans: The weather is going to be spotty, so went for a walk today (Saturday). On Sunday, I’ll be getting a haircut from my spouse now that my scissors and thinning shears have arrived, will be weeding out recipe cards and recipe books and wishing our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day remotely.

Favourite artist: I’m not sure I have one though I’ve always enjoyed Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings.

Maggie Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries:
Rediscovered: a fuchsia lip–I had almost hauled a new lipstick until I realized my current collection had what I needed–no need to buy more unless I start wearing fuchsia lips more often. Revlon Superlustrous Lipstick Fuchsia Fusion and Colour Pop I Heart This
Target: Revlon Super Lustrous Glass Shine Lipstick in Glaring Coral
Amazon: NYX Autobrow Pencil in Charcoal x3 (for my mom bc it’s been discontinued)
UD BOGO: Vice lipsticks in Afterdark and Hitch Hike are expected to arrive tomorrow
TheBalm 50% off sale: Balm Desert Bronzer/Blush
Sephora: Natasha Denona Darya Palette, MJB Le Marc Lip Creme in Core Cora

Weekend Plans: I live in a rural area with a small population that has been following physical distancing so parks and beaches have remained open. I’ll probably venture out. Also baking harvest bread for my mom for Mother’s Day.
