Burberry Kisses Sheer Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.11 oz.) aren’t new, but they’re just the right type of lip product for spring. Many, many years ago, I used to do lip product reviews based on the season (like corals in summer, reds during the holidays), but after reviewing YSL’s newest Rouge Volupte Shines, I was curious about what other more hydrating, balm-like lipstick ranges were out there that might be worth considering. After a big recommendation from a friend, I thought now was a good time to dive into Burberry’s offering of buildable coverage, balm-like lipsticks….

I bought the Nude Pink on a whim in duty free a year or so ago and really love it. It’s very hydrating and has decent staying power for a balmy lipstick. I also like the YSL Rouge Volupte and think anyone who enjoys that line will enjoy these too. Thanks for swatching the other shades! I would be tempted to get more if I didn’t already have so much 🙂

Ah, I’m curious about these. I actually like sheer-to-mid coverage, balm-like lip colors, but they’re almost always too glossy for me. The one’s that aren’t too glossy are often too waxy and don’t feel hydrating (or feel outright drying). I’m still waiting for the perfect hydrating, satin-matte, mid-sheer lipstick. Fingers crossed.

Do you mean their Generation G product? I haven’t yet; I checked them out before and was slightly put off by their being only a handful of colors, but … yeah, I really should give them a try at least once.

Tessa Avatar

That’s the one! I’m not 100% sure why I haven’t ever tried them, since I think I’d like them. I guess I mostly stick to the larger retailers, which makes more sense to me than buying from 20 different sites and worrying about whether I want enough from that one brand to hit a free shipping minimum.

I just checked out Generation G again, and the reviews mention it’s drying (though I guess it was recently reformulated to try to correct that). I do appreciate the suggestion, but what I’m actually looking for is a lip color that looks like a blotted lip, but is no glossier than satin-matte, and ultimately hydrating. Like these Burberry lipsticks … they seem to exist equally for reasons of hydration and color — I want that but not shiny looking. Unfortunately “not shiny” apparently also means “not hydrating.”

I am loving that you’re reviewing this kind of lip product! I am personally not really a fan of really opaque or matte lipsticks, as I find it just too intense for my daily look, and I’m always looking for sheer, glossy or satiny, easy to wear lip products. I look forward to seeing how these rate!

Thank you for the swatches Christine! I love Sweet Pea, Light Crimson and Hydrangea. Sephora CA has only a few shades (Sweet Pea from the three I mentioned), and they are only available online.

On another note, I’m so mad at Bite Beauty for discontinuing their Lush Lip Tint range. Such a great formula and ingredients! Last year I purchased a couple of backups in “Juice” (ma favorite shade). The exact amount of shine, excellent hydration and a very decent staying power (when I drink water/coffee for instance, I can see some stains on the glass/cup, but the color stays the same on the lips). Sorry for the unrelated rant 🙂

Oh I missed this reply before I commented. I personally just can’t make myself buy makeup online unless I know I can go return something in person because I know myself and if I don’t get it from Ulta, Sephora, or Nordstrom whatever doesn’t work is going to collect dust. And lately I’ve been getting bad about returning stuff even to Sephora because I have to go to the nearest mall which isn’t in my town.

I miss those Bite tints as well. I think it’s great. That’s the thing with Bite. Don’t get too attached to things; they’ll probably discontinue it, which is a little annoying.

I’ve just looked up Burberry Kisses Sheer Lipsticks at Hudson’s Bay; they carry 25 shades, the additional one being Carnation (225). Thank God for HB!
Holt Renfrew doesn’t carry Burberry makeup (at least not online), and at Shoppers Drug Mart they have only Burberry fragrances, body oils & lotions.

What I like about both these and the YSLs, is that you can wear shades that would just horrify you, if they were opaque. But, being old and crotchety, i’d Probably go for the dark reds and brown reds anyway!

I love Burberry products. I think they’re under-rated and not talked about much. I actually lover their cat eyes mascara, eye shadows and blushes. Their Oxblood lip colors in. Various formulas is a mainstay for me. Thanks for the swatches! Nude pink is a fave of mine.

Instead of, or in addition to the many shades that are so similar, it would be nice to see some cool and neutral muted mid-tone pinks, and cool plums.

Thanks Christine for posting these swatches. I’ve been wanting to purchase one of these lipsticks. I’ll hold off on ordering any until I see your reviews. If it gets an A I’m all over it!

Did you buy the Orange Poppy shade at Saks? It’s not online. I saw Samantha Ravndahl wear it and now I’m obsessed but can’t find that shade anywhere!

50ShadesOfLipstick Avatar

Same! That shade isn’t available at Saks, Sephora, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, or even Burberry itself! So frustrating lol

50ShadesOfLipstick Avatar

So I contacted Burberry directly and they told me that Orange Poppy has been discontinued and that it was part of their Summer Showers Collection from 2014. The majority of the shades reviewed above are new(er) shades which are still available through a variety of retailers but they did tell me that I might possibly be able to find Orange Poppy in store at retailers that carry Burberry makeup. Hope that helps!

Such a bummer that they are discontinuing such a pretty color, but thank you for doing the research! I was able to find this shade this morning at my local Saks! It was apparently the last one they had, but this means they might still have it at counters! I hope you find it!

A bit on the creamy/glossy side for me, but a nice range nonetheless. “Nude” looks like it might be a a true nude on me (more tan than peach). Cedar Rose is another intriguing color. All in all, a solid-looking collection.
