If you had to rebuild your makeup stash with $150, what would you start with?
If you had to rebuild your makeup stash with $150, what would you start with? What would make up your essentials?
I’d grab 2-3 Wet ‘n’ Wild eyeshadow palettes (and I’d look for the 8-pans, if I could) — so let’s say $10 there. I’d opt for MUFE’s HD foundation (looks good in person, great in photos), which is $42, then Laura Mercier’s Loose Setting Powder to set it ($35). For mascara, I’d grab one of CoverGirl’s Lash Blast’s ($8), and for eyeliner, I’d look to Milani and get one black and one brown ($8). For blush, I’d go for MAC Margin (which was a go-to for years) for $20. For lips, I’d opt for a lipstick/gloss set (Sephora has a favorites set for $25), in the $25-ish neighborhood.
Thanks to Nicole for today’s question! Do you have a question idea? Submit yours here.
LORAC Pro palette ($42, and it comes with a primer), UD Smoked palette ($49), Garnier BB Cream ($13), L’Oreal Lineur Intense & Voluminous mascara (about $25, together), WnW eyebrow pencil ($1), and a cheap lip balm.
Wow, my tastes really are quite simple, LOL! Most of these are HG anyway, but if I had to decide on where to spend the most money, it would definitely be the eyes.
1) Sephora Pantone Palette – $48 (Or any multi-shadow palette that is well pigmented and has a good black, which will probably be around the same price point, plus or minus $10 dollars usually)
2) Ellis Faas Concealer – $40 (I don’t really need foundation so this can be used to spot conceal or I could layer a thin layer over my face as foundation if I really wanted to. Plus, I can make tinted moisturiser with this too.)
3) Fresh Supernova mascara – $25 (my absolute favourite mascara… Guerlain G mascara comes a close second though.)
4) Sephora waterproof eyeliner in black – $12
5) Sephora Collection Rouge Cream in 04 The Red – $12 ( Can be worn as a red lipstick or sheered out to different degrees, making this a really versatile shade. Plus, it can be used as blush too.)
6) Loose Powder by L’oreal – $13 (Can be used to prime the eyelids and put on lips to create a pinkish shade when combined with the red lippie).
LOL. Looking at my list, you can tell what I prioritise in my makeup, both in terms of product quality and the features I focus on when doing my makeup.
In any case, this was such a fun exercise! Trying to come up with a minimalist collection that would serve all my basic needs – and a few not-so-basic ones – also reminds me of the many dupes I have for my makeup fixations like black eyeliner pencil and black and taupe eyeshadow plus mascara… Oops…
MUFE mat velvet plus $34, Milani eye tech extreme liquid liner $4, CG Las Blast mascara, NARS cream blush $28, Bobbi Brown corrector $23 @ dept store $15 at outlet mall, L’Oreal HIP e/s duo $7, MAC eyebrow and lip pencils $30 for both, Ben Nye Luxury powder 1.5 ounce $8.50 and NYX soft matte lip cream. OMG, that was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I would be able to include some of my faves in the collection.
I think I’d start with Revlon’s Colorstay (or the whipped one, I like them both) for roughly 10 dollars. I need a great concealer for my under eyes. I like to mix Maybelline’s Fit Me Concealer and Revlon’s Photoready Eye Brightening Pen, which are 7 and 9 dollars, respectively. I just use Rimmel Stay Matte Daily, which I see for roughly 4 dollars at my local drugstores. As for cheek products, I’d get a couple of the Wet n’ Wild blushes (probably Heather Silk and Berry Shimmer) and end up spending like 6 total. Then I would be obligated to get MAC’s Gingerly blush for 20 because I need that in my life. Then I think I would get L’oreal’s infallible eyeshadows in Iced Latte, Endless Pearl, Bottomless Java, and Bronzed Taupe (My FAVORITE eyeshadows, by far. besides maybe MAC’s Sable, Satin Taupe, and Naked Lunch…but that’s a different story). That would add up to roughly 32 and then I’d get Mac’s Fluidline in Black Track for roughly 15 and the E.L.F. Eyebrow Kit for 3. As far as lips go, it would probably just be the Smith’s Minted Rosebud Salve which is 8. So that puts me at 114…I guess with the extra money I’d get a MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre for 20 and get a Korres Lip Butter in Jasmine for 12. And that’s a grand total of 146. 🙂
Oh, Aussie prices, how you make life difficult.
Illamasqua Skin Base foundation (2.0) – $41
Almay Smart Shade powder (if it was still available, which it isn’t :() – $30
Almay liquid eyeliner pen (brown) – $21
Revlon Colorstay eyeshadow quads x 2 (the old style, from clearance stores!) – $7.50 each – $15
Models Prefer Infinite Colour Shadow Pencil (Down to Earth) – $10
Australia creme colour (doubles as blush and lip colour) – $10
Revlon Photoready 3D mascara (brownish black) – $24
$151. Not bad. Aside from brushes and colour variation, I think that actually covers everything I use frequently! The only thing I changed was blush– I use Revlon’s Colorstay Mineral Blush ($26) most, but the multi-purpose cream is better value.
Wow. Those prices are outrageous!
$150…
Cosmedicine Medi matte $29- I’ve seen it for less but I’ll settle with that #
temptu retouch foundation $20- There on sale right now. I use these like a concealer and if needed full foundation.
Tarte carried away pallet $54- has enough shadows, lipgloss, a mascara, blush and a finishing powder to boot. I’m not sure I would love them but it would be a good starting base.
Tart eye catchers set $39- Has enough colors to keep me busy for a little bit.
I’d still have 8 dollars left over to rummage for something like maybe a travel size eye base or something.
I may have to buy that Tarte Kit its really been intrigued by it. Though it has mixed reviews. Christine you ordered the Carried away pallet didn’t you? What do you think of it?
Easier than I thought.
Skin79 Super Gold Plus BB Cream tube $18
Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer $25
Rimmel Stay Matte powder $5
Urban Decay Naked palette $50
Maybelline The Falsies mascara $6
L’oreal black eyeliner $7
NYX round lipstick in pumpkin pie $3
NYX gloss in Sugar Pie $5
Revlon just bitten balm stain (one of the bright pinks or reds) $8
ELF contouring blush and bronzing powder $3
with twenty bucks to spare 🙂
I ended up playing around on Sephora for a bit tonight trying to make this work – I wanted to see if I could get to $150, cover all the bases, and stay with Sephora. I think I did it! Here’s the break down;
Face: Bobbi Brown BB Cream ($42)
Powder: Laura Mercier Shine Control ($32)
Blush: Tarte Amazonian Clay in probably Exposed ($25)
Lips: Sephora Give Me Some Lip sampler ($25)
Eyes: Sephora Bewitching Eye Kit ($22)
Total: $146. However, this doesn’t include any brushes. If I had to buy those, I’d probably toss the eye kit, buy a Milani eyeliner and Maybelline Full ‘n Soft mascara, and get the EcoTools 6-piece brush set. I didn’t do numbers on that but it should still fall under $150. I didn’t bother buying eyeshadow because I rarely if ever wear it, so it’d be a later purchase when replenishing my stash.
Starting over with $150?…
I would definitely get my BB cream ( Skin79 at korean market), $16. I’ve been using bb creams for years before it became a fad. Foundations break out my skin.
Maybelline concealer, $5.
MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Powder, $29.
Mac Paint Pot in Soft Ochre, $18.50.
Naked 2 palette has basically all the colors I need. I’m not daring with eyeshadow makeup so I stick with neutrals. $50.
L’Oreal Paris Infallible Lacquer Liner 24H Eyeliner the brown one, $8.
Loreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black, $6.
Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso, $6.99
NYX lipstick or lip gloss are in nudes and reds, $4-$6.
Total is about $146, not including taxes.
Oh this sounds like fun!
Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation spf 15 $46 (dewy, long-lasting, buildable, non-oxidizing on me, non-irritating on me)
Laura Mercier Oil-free Foundation Primer $32 (essential bc I’m prone to flakey yet oily skin)
Graftobian Corrector Palette $30 (great for undereyes and discoloration)
Revlon Superlustrous Lipstick in Blushing Nude $8
Maybelline Dream Matte Powder $7
Milani Shadow Eyez in Champagne Toast $7 (a decent eye base if you work quickly before it sets and a nice color all by itself)
Rimmel Brow Pencil in Black-Brown $3
Covergirl Lash Exact Waterproof $8
Wet n Wild Creme Eyeliner in Black $4 (I’ve never actually used this but have been wanting to try…)
Rimmel Match Perfection Blush in Medium $5 (also never used but it’s a 3-tones-in-1 blush)
For face: Skin79 Hot Pink BB cream, $12, and Physician’s Formula pressed powder, $12.
For eyes: UD Primer Potion, $18, WnW 8 pan palette x2, $16, Maybelline mascara $9, PF gel liner trio, $12.
For lips: Milani HD Advance lipstick x2, $14, Jordana Easyshine x2, $4.
And that’s just shy of $100 and covers my basics. Plus, I estimated high…so I guess hypothetical me can go get an UD palette, haha.
Ooh what a fun post! Here’s my list:
Lancome Teint Idole 24H Foundation = $44.00
Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder = $36.00
MAC Pro Sculpting Powder = $15.50
Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil = $32.00
Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow = $20.00
That puts me at = $147.50. 🙂
This isn’t my FAVORITE combo because I actually mix two foundations, and my favorite brow product is discontinued. But hey, I’ll work with what’s available!
EASY!
Inglot eyeshadows, 1 matte black, 1 matte dark brown (face contouring, brow filling, etc) 1 matte burnt orange (blush) $26.00
Urban Decay Naked 1 (1 mini primer + 1 brush) $50.00
2 Revlon Colorstay Foundation, 1 dark, 1 darker $25.00
1 Maybelline Mineral Power Powder foundation $11.00
MAC Select Cover-up $18.00
1 ELF bronzer (used as highlighter) in Sunkissed $1.00
Palladio Liquid Eyeliner black $6.00
Milani Liqui’fye Pencil Black $7.00
ELF Duo Mascara black $1.00
Any money left goes to brushes (all ELF)
Let’s say it’s in euros for me 😉
So, 150, huh ?
The Naked Palette and the primer potion set : 45
Clinique’s BB Cream : 30
MAC prep + prime powder : 25
MAC blacktrack : 15
MAC blush Dame : 20
Mac lipstick Hue : 15
Lotto tickets and hope for the best?
ha! love it!!
High five!
I would first start out with Mac msfn in light medium 34$, Clinique perfect real foundation 30$, Revlon growlushious plumping mascara 8$, Annabelle brow pencil in auburn 3$, Mac pan eye shadows in brule and cork 28$, Revlon color stay liquid liner 8$, Mac cantelope blush 24$, Mac angel lipstick 15$. LOL I think that’s exactly 150$. It’s funny because I couldn’t buy Nars or guerlain.. :'(
All of Tarina Tarantino’s stuff is 40% off at Sephora, so I would buy one or 2 of her palettes (Dreamy for sure and maybe 1 other) – $21. I’d buy one of her blushes ($20) or perhaps a Wet n Wild one. Two Gosh pencil liners. Maybe a Sephora Jumbo eye pencil. Marcelle BB cream with SPF. Either Rimmel or Coty powder. Either Maybelline Colour Tattoo or L’Oreal Infallible to double as a shadow base. I rarely wear mascara so I’d probably skip that for the short term. For lipstick, I’d go with Covergirl or Revlon – some pinky/berry shade and for sure one Revlon lip butter. I think that would leave me quite a bit left to use as a “cushion”
If I was doing it right now, I’d grab the Tarte Carried Away Collection $54). There’s a powder, blush, a blush brush, mascara, plenty of shadows, and lipglosses. If I needed brushes, I’d grab the Real Techniques Starter Set and probably Core Collection. They’re often bogo half off at ulta so there’s a decent brush set for $27. For liner, I’d go with the Sephora Favorites for $28 to get a variety of kinds or I’d go with the Almay liquid liner (I prefer liquid) for around 7 or 8. I’d grab a BB cream for my foundation, the one I have is around $30 with shipping. Fortunately the holiday season is a great time to build your collection or branch out to new products with all the different gift sets.
$150 is around £94.5, so let’s round up to £95. With the exception of the face primer, lipgloss, and I suppose foundation (which I have tried, but never bought), all of these are products I already love/have.
Face Primer – FashionistA Mattifying Primer (£10)
Foundation – Guerlain Lingerie de Peau (£36.50)
Setting Powder – Rimmel Stay Matte (£3.99)
Blush – FashionistA Blush (£4)
Eye Primer – S&G It’s About Prime (£8)
Eyeshadow – MUA Heaven & Earth Palette (£4)
Mascara – Famous by Sue Moxley I’m Your Curl (£5.99)
Lipstick – Sleek True Colour (£4.99)
Lipgloss – S&G Motherpucker gloss (£9.00)
Total: £86.47 without taking store deals into account. Aww yeah.
Hm…
Bobbi brown long wear gel liner – $24
Sephora eyeliner brush – $14
Shiseido eyelash curler – $19
Cover girl lash blast mascara – $8
Urban Decay Naked Palette – $50
Mac Barestudy Paint Pot – $19
Revlon Colrstay Foundation – $12
Total: 148?
I spend a lot on just eyes
Let’s see. This is a good question, also for packing for travel:
[assumption – I still a have my brushes, cleansers, moisturizers, etc, just replacing makeup]
SK Instructional neutrals palette – $20
Jordana mascara $ 3
Revlon colorstay whipped fndn $15
2 NYX concealers (highlight, conceal)$16
LA Girl blushes (at least one) $10
Milani pencil as an e/s primer $ 8
4 NYX lipsticks – neutrals, reds $12
PF face primer $10
Cream color (matte) Infallible e/s $ 8
I still have some $$, about $50, to play with – Armani #403 l/s, more Infallible e/s pots, and some new RT brushes.
Assuming I still own my brushes…
Mac Studio Fix Powder Foundation – $27
Naked Palette – $50 (thank god it comes with primer potion!!)
Blacktrack Fluidline – $15
Loreal Double Extend Mascara – $11
Revlon Lip Butters in Creme Brulee and Sugar Frosting – $14
Tarte Exposed Blush – $25
Total = $142
I would get this Loreal lipstick…they smell so good. Some Clinique products like the blush. I few SugarPill eyecolor or Urban Decay Naked Palette or the Vice Palette. A drugstore mascara. Face Stockholm cake eyeliner. And a compact foundation. No eye primer. I dont need it; somehow I dont get fallout.
Omg… First I think I’d die. Then, I would get a big bottle of MAC Face & Body, and make an order with NYX for some eyeliner and lipliner pencils. I’d also go to CVS and get some Revlon opaque lipsticks, and a few Milani shadow pencils. Also, I couldn’t forget my Essence of Beauty brush set, and I’d get a recommendation for DS mascara as I’ve never tried one. Then concealer and Brow Tech to Go from Smashbox, and I’d be at my $150. I’d survive on samples for everything else from my favorite counter people. (Primers, pigments, etc.)
Too funny, loved that “first I’d die”, so would I!
I’d buy another Urban Decay Vegan Palette off eBay, let’s say that’s $30 (last one was in around that neighborhood), I’d get another Maybelline lipstick in ‘Crazy for Coffee’, that’s about $15. I’d get a Bourjois concealer stick, $20 or so. A Rimmel Mascara, $15. I’d spend the last $70 on an Inglot 5 pan palette in whatever took my fancy.
That’s a tricky one, since several of my go-to products have been discontinued. I couldn’t do without Maybelline’s Superstay 14HR Lipstick in Lasting Chestnut ($9). I’m not a big buyer of blush, and my go-to is a Jane bronzer in Tahiti. Jane has done a total reboot, so that’s gone… the other thing I’m liking a lot right now is NARS Lovejoy ($28), although it’s not quite right for an everyday color. I suspect if I were starting from scratch I’d look around more than I have lately, maybe get something from the BareMinerals Ready line ($22) and skip the NARS.
I find foundation to be kind of a pain and don’t always wear it, but Urban Decay Naked Skin is some kind of amazing, so I’d definitely pick that up in 3.5 ($38).
I’d probably pick up whatever giant value kit Ulta or Sephora had for eye colors, that’d be $25… which puts me at $94 with $56 still to spend. I suppose I might pick up an inexpensive mascara under $10), and then the rest would depend on whether I needed brushes or primer in this hypothetical exercise or whether I was giving myself a little more variety. (If the latter, I’d probably nab a couple of Nyx eye pencils and try to decide on a lip stain since my two favorites are discontinued.)
I’d have to start with my Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circles Concealer ($7) and that could double for a concealer for most things. I’d then get Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse ($9) for foundation. I’d get a Nars Laguna bronzer and Orgasm blush set ($41). I’d have to splurge on my beloved Urban Decay Naked palette ($50), and thank goodness it gives a mini primer potion until I could spend the $20 on a full size! I’d get a Maybelline Full n’ Soft mascara in Very Black ($7) and then an Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil in Zero ($19). My lips get NYX lip gloss in Beautiful ($6) and their round case lipstick in Spellbound ($4). I come in $7 under, just enough to cover a cup of coffee and a Cosmo to dream about what to buy next. 😛

I would cry if I only had $150… I omitted a lot of stuff that is necessary for me to use but I made it!
First off I’d start with the Too Faced Little Black Book of Beauty ($36), because it comes with a bunch of eye shadows, face highlighter, 2 blushes, bronzer, lipgloss, and a mascara. That takes care of a majority I’d need.
The rest of the list:
Foundation: MAC Full Coverage Foundation ($30)
Concealer: NYX HD Concealer Wand ($5.49)
Powder: NYX HD Studio Finishing Powder ($10)
Eyebrows: NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder ($6)

For a total of $138.46!
I want Christine to answer again with different products..lol! Fun question. I would go for Bobbi Brown BB cream and the rest drugstore Cowboy!
Ooooh, good question! 🙂 I’m going with the assumption that I still own all my brushes and a lash curler as well, sooo… here goes!
* NARS Sheer Glow foundation – $42
* Urban Decay Smoked Palette (ten shadows (one of which is also a good brow colour for me), full-size Perversion pencil liner, mini UDPP) – $49
* Revlon Photoready 3D Volume mascara – approx. $9
* NYC Smooth Skin loose powder – approx. $3
* Maybelline Fit Me concealer – approx. $6.50 (my favourite concealer was discontinued, and I’ve not tried this, so good excuse to! :))
* NYX Mega-Shine lipgloss in Beige – approx. $5.50
* MAC Viva Glam II lipstick – $15
* NYX blushes in Espress (for contouring or bronzing) and Angel – $12 for both
TOTAL: $142
Hmmm….very interesting question! Since my skin is in pretty good condition now I’d spend my $150 this way:
MAC Face & Body Foundation – $40 (might as well spend the extra $8 for more than double the product!)
CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara – $8
Urban Decay Primer Potion – $20 (The XL tube has been on sale for months now so I’d take advantage lol)
Urban Decay Naked Palette – $50
Urban Decay Double Ended Eyeliner – $12
And I’d spend the last $20 on whatever neutral lip glosses I could find
Even after listing this I can think of other ways where I can cut corners and get more bang for my buck BUT…these are some items I can have and not feel like I’m missing a necessity…well…as much as any makeup can be a necessity lol
– Clinique Acne Solutions Foundation $27
– Korres Mattifying Primer $33 (so worth it!!)

– ELF Eyebrow Gel $1
– Benefit High Beam $26
– L’oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara $8

3. Maybellline mascara ~$8
4. MAC Patisserie l/s ~$16
5. L’oreal Infallible e/s’s in Iced latte, Golden Sage, Golden Emerald, and Bronzed Taupe ~$40
This was surprisingly easy. I thought this question would be hard to answer, but as soon as I started thinking about it I realized that most of the products I use on a regular basis all together total less than $150.
Wow this was fun…and I’m learning lots from others. I played around on multiple sites including Sephora, Ulta and e.l.f. and found some interesting things:
– Eyeshadow Base: Essence Eyeshadow primer 2.00 (bought in Germany and actually don’t mind it as a backup primer)
– Foundation: Skin79 Pink around 20.00 (my go to BB cream for years
– Concealer: MAC Pro Longwear Concealer 18.00
– Mascara: L’Oreal Voluminous Lashes 8.99 (my go-to Mascara)
– Eyeshadow and Lipgloss: Nyx Nude on Nude palette 24.99 (this one I found at Ulta and it looks like a great alternative to the Naked palette at a lower price)
– Blush: Nyx Rose Garden 5.99
– Powder: e.l.f. HD powder 6.00
– Brushes: e.l.f. 6piece brush collection 20.00 (set I found on their website)
.105.97
With such a large amount left I’d probably replace the blush with a Beach tint and buy a Revlon Lipbutter and still be at under 130 bucks.
It seems that I’m not that hung up on the expensive stuff I use every day, makes me ponder the cheaper alternatives.
MUFE Mat Velvet + Foundation – $36
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural – $29
Beautique Eyebrow pencil – $4
MAC Blush in Tenderling – $20
Revlon Kissable Balm Stain in Honey – $7

Cle de Peau concealer, Maybelline mascara, Tarina Tarantino Hyperliner and an Edward Bess Soft Smoke palette!
This is a great question…

Wet and Wild eye shadow palettes – qty 2-12.00
Drugstore brand mascara-10

I went over by $1. but what I just realize is my foundation and concealer I will splurge on-everything else I can grab drugstore/beauty supply store stuff.
UD naked 1 palette 60$
Garnier concealer 10$
Rimmel powder 10$

The thought is giving me PTSD! I’m New Orleanian.
But…
CeraVe moisturizer with Hyluronic acid to puff up those lines.
Revlon Color Stay Foundation.
Neutrogena (or store copy of) make up removing wipes and eye make up liquid.
Maybelline Age Rewind stuff that covers my under eyes. Brightener.
Color Tattoo in Gold, maybe bronze.
Need a budget Luminizer to mix with the foundation. Smashbox won’t fit.
Wet n Wild lippies. I wear them daily, they rock!
A large neutral WnW eye shadow pallet, a color one with purples.
MAC for Fluidline, mascara, and blush? I have no idea about blush, it’s all MAC LE or Nars.
Maybe lipstick on the cheeks blended. Or a NYX.
If I still have the cash, a MAC MSF in Soft and Gentle. Makes me glow, and if my make up is gone I likely moved to Staten Island and so is everything else. Shock gives one a pallor. I’ve seen it.
I am mostly listing what I’ve been wearing. ELF eye shadow primer is surprisingly good, not great but good. ELF Transparent setting powder is indistinguishable from MAC and six bucks! Maybe an ELF blush?
Love CeraVe, it’s drugstore magic.

I just realized that I forgot my lip liner…Jordana number 14 Rust…so 1 more dollar…152 dollars… lets just pretend I got the Zan zussi concelear and jordana lip liner for cheap at a drugstore sale lol.

That’s 149, cutting it close. Maybe a blush from ELF? Can’t honestly name a blush under 20. It’s unnecessary without full foundation.
I noticed everyone is forgetting eyeshadow primer and it to me is a must have. It makes even cheap shadows hold up. This to me is a must have even I you use the cheap one from ELF. Especially for those using wet n wild shadows.
