Do you expect brands to be innovative?
To a degree. I am not always expecting brands to reinvent the wheel, and sometimes brands try to do so and it’s just… not innovative and feels more like a money grab by saying “it’s new!” I want to see brands that are looking forward so that if better ingredients or formulations become available, they’re not afraid to change or tweak what they have to incorporate those improvements.
Sometimes. It’s always good to have new and improved formulas, but I also don’t think a classic, well-performing product should be changed just for the sake of change.
Interesting question. I like brands to be consistent so this recent trend of “reformulating” (WnW, MUFE, etc.) but coming out with something worse than the original, just to be “innovative” annoys me a lot. So I guess I like brands to stick with winners (in terms of colour and formula). And this copy-cat trend of Modern Renaissance imitators is something I dislike also (though I’d feel differently, I guess, if that sort of colour assortment suited me). So I guess I don’t like innovation just for its own sake….I like the innovation to come with consistent quality that reflects the best a brand is capable of and I’d rather brands didn’t hop on the copy-cat train.
I do and as you pointed out Christine, I prefer first and foremost that innovation be made in terms of improving the formula (ingredient-wise, quality), then expanding the shade range and then their offering, if necessary. For instance, I don’t mind buying from a niche brand like Bite Beauty and I prefer them to focus on the lip products. They are doing them so well and I trust their ingredients and formula.
I’ve come to expect innovation from ColourPop, and they truly deliver! It seems like they are re-inventing the game with a lot of their releases; I’m thinking specifically of their most recent “jelly much” gel eyeshadows. I wish other brands would take a cue from them and really stretch their limits of innovation.
Yes! I agree with you about ColourPop, Sarah! That is one of the very few truly innovative brands out here.
I believe that we have reached the point where the market is so oversaturated with new brands, new products, with everyone claiming “new, new, NEW”, when 90% of the time it really isn’t anything we haven’t seen before.
There are instead, far more cases where brands decided to reformulate a popular, well loved product only to have it become an utter fail, ie; MUFE Artist Shadows, anyone?
Yet, every once in awhile, the hype *IS* for real! As in; Pat McGrath LuxeTrance and MatteTrance lipstick formulas, her superb eyeshadow palettes, too. I’m also putting the new, very pigmented gloss/lipstick hybrids that both Too Faced and MAC are doing now into this category!
I’m in 100% agreement with you, Christine.
Generally I just want brands to deliver their products to the highest quality – that comes first. And what is an innovative colour scheme to some (think ABH Mod Ren), doesn’t work on others (like me).
So every now and again I would like to see something different, new formulas that have been thoroughly tested before release and different shades.
Never really thought about it. I would expect indie companies to be more innovative with colors. Possibly finishes. I would expect the companies with bigger budgets and R&D departments to experiment with ingredients, packaging. I don’t really expect innovation, as much as assume that successful companies will engage in that to get an edge, to keep interest in their brand while hopefully keeping a core of decent, familiar, time-honored classics that fans can return to time and again.
Yes! Absolutely! I expect better formulas, but that won’t kill us. Better textures, feeling good is everything! And great, popping and blendable eyeshadows. Color scheme, futuristic (duo-chromish, holographic, but WEARABLE). I’ll be that old lady wearing flashing strobe lipstick one day (Ha!, Okay, maybe not, but it would be fun.)
