How do you keep your makeup looking fresh during the heat? How do you keep everything from sliding off?
Primers are always good, and then using a product that’s long-wearing is another good step to take. From there, you can either approach makeup as layers, or you can try to use less rather than more. Sometimes I’ll tote around pressed powder to help fix foundation when it’s really hot (and I’m actually outdoors for long enough stretches of time where it impacts my makeup).

I rely on beauty balm and blotting papers.
Exactly my stuff!!! for an oily skin there is nothing working better blotting papers. Also I really use less makeup.. Just mild-moderate or no eyeshadow with mascara, some blush and lipgloss then good to go! Clinique’s bb cream is also very good for my skin type.
This one’s easy 🙂 When it’s reallllly hot, or humid, I avoid foundation. I might do a light layer of pressed powder, but usually I’ll throw on a tinter moisurizer with spf and go! I don’t even use blush, specifically because since it’s hot, I know I’ll naturally get a little pinker than usual. I’ll usually do an eye look that doesn’t require lining the lower water line and I don’t put black mascara on my bottom lashes. Instead, I’d use a clear mascara or go naked!
I wear less makeup when it’s hot and/or humid. I feel I look more put together with just a tinted moisturizer & lipbalm and a coat of mascara, than an entire face of smeared, smudged, and faded.

I use milk of magnesia first on a clean face, then apply my primer then my makeup. The MOM keeps my oils from coming through and keeps my makeup on all day long… no kidding!
If it’s very hot or humid (we’re talking high 90’s), then I’ll generally avoid heavy makeup. Foundation in particular gets skipped, though I’ll occasionally throw on tinted moisturizer with a mattifying powder on top – Too Faced Translucent Pressed Powder is my new summer BFF. I also tend to skip eyeliner (particular kohl/pencil) in the summer, since it’ll smear like crazy on the lower lash line and transfer on my top lids and outer corner. (The pains of hooded eyes!)
I wear less makeup *g* The last few days all I’ve been wearing is a bit of powder and tinted lip balm. Tomorrow I might step it up and wear powder foundation and lipstick, maybe some mascara, but that’s about it.
I usually rely on blotting papers and pressed powder to fix my foundation, I also set my under eyes concealer ( not something I usually do in colder weather) , and I only wear a water proof mascara on my eyes and go for a strong lip color
less is definitely more during summer season. I use biodermas pore refiner as a primer on my nose and cheek area, as most primers by cosmetic brand are too much for me. I have pretty dry skin, but because of sweating I fix my TM or BB cream with chanel translucent powder in the summer – it keeps the makeup at it’s place without being drying. I dont use blush now as my cheeks are getting rosy from the heat but do a little bit of conturing with cliniques bronzing gel, which I think is discontinued now. Just a bit of smoke with mac rosemary&thyme liner around my eyes, mascara and I’m good to go.
If it’s really hot during the day I avoid lipsticks and glosses and opt for carmex instead, as I am very lucky to have heavivly pigmented lips.
@ashtraygirl6 Bioderma’s pore refiner is a god bless!!!!! I adore that thing I used to use it almost everyday now I finished mine and there are so other stuffs I used to buy before but as soon as I finished them I am going straight back to Bioderma!!!
Milk of Magnesia did wonderful things to my very oily face, I also opted for lip and cheek stain because it will stays for the whole day. Then, I use a waterproof mascara and blot powder. No foundation.
But…
Sometimes when I have to wear foundation (outdoor events like attend wedding at the beach, etc), I add Smashbox Pore and Line Primer (I used to love Clinique Pore Perfector Instant Minimizer, but it was d/c-ed) and a long wearing foundation like ELDW/Guerlain Parure Extreme/Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk/Chanel Perfection Lumiere.
As an oily skinned gal, I ALWAYS bring my oil blotting film/paper and my trusted blot powder for touch up. No excessive sebum = fresh looking makeup!
I agree about a good primer. I also rely more on powder formulations for foundation (feels lighter and seems less prone to melting) and I also really like Clarins “Fix Makeup” – a setting spray that is, supposedly, also good for your skin.
I would wear a long wearing waterproof eyeshadow in a soft color, waterproof liner and mascara etc. Eyes are easy to resist humid/heat weather because there are lots of products for example in MUFE.
Then the face, I would try a long wearing powder Bronzer like tartes because anything liquid, even long wearing could cause patches. For the lips, I would avoid lipstick and just use something like a stain. Of course, highlighters etc does not belong to products that can remain in a good condition in such a harsh environment.
When it’s hot I just wear the driest sunscreen I can find, powder and mascara. I usually avoid eyeshadow and definitely cheek products.
Thanks Ashley for asking this! This question has been in my mind for the past couple of days. Hi Christine! What heavy duty concealer for dry skin can you recommend to cover pigmentations? I live in Manila, Philippines and it’s pretty humid here all throughout the year.
@soleil OCC’s new concealer is pretty good! I know it’s harder to get internationally I think… Are there some brands you’re interested in particularly? Or easily available? Then I could be more helpful!
@Christine (Temptalia) Most brands are easily available here, malls are complete with almost all high-end and drugstore brands. Multiply.com is also full of resellers who can order products not available locally. MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer is too drying for me, Nars I’m not sure if it will last all day, Shu Uemura’s Pro Gel Cealer looks promising, do you think this is worth giving a try? Thanks for your reply, I know your sked is tight. Really appreciate it 🙂
@soleil You might like MAC’s Moisturecover, which is more of a liquid concealer – so it shouldn’t be drying. I haven’t tried shu uemura’s Pro Gel, though.

Primer, skin79 orange BB cream (SPF50), a bit of loose powder in the Tzone, linen blotters during the day, and MAC Blot Powder after blotting. No mascara, a little eyeliner and a stay-on lip color with lip balm (Maybelline 24 hours is the best, wish they had more shades).
I have to wear foundation, so I carry in my makeup bag a tiny vial of makeup. The vial is from a sample I once got at a counter. I only need a very little bit to touch up, and it makes all the difference. I tried a Benefit powder foundation, but it either didn’t cover (when I used the brush) or looked cakey (when I used the sponge).
Wearing less makeup, wearing gel-based products instead of creams and putting on a good primer.
If I have a ‘good’ skin day, I skip foundation and only use a little concealer and a light dust of powder to keep shine at bay.
BB cream (I use Smashbox and I don’t need primer with it), lots of powder on top (both Smashbox Halo and some pressed powder on my T zone), blotting sheets, and a pressed powder touch up around 4 PM.
I also wear less makeup. I start with a light moisturizer cuz my skin is dry, then use a tinted moisturizer with spf. I use only powder shadow, and wet powder shadow as eyeliner, and powder blush. Since my skin is dry, I try to use as little finishing powder as possible. I try to use lipstick with SPF, but I’m addicted to lippies and have many different brands and colors.

I reach for all my ‘color stay’ formulas and Makeup Forever cream eye shadows.
Waterproof mascaras, oil free and oil control primer, more powder than cream/liquid products and products claiming to be long wearing. And blotting sheets and a powder that doesn’t cake. That’s what I do 🙂
Shiseido Sun Protection Liquid Foundation sheered out with an oil-free Gel Moisturizer and Skindinavia No More Shine Setting Spray plus a little bit of Too Faced Aqua Bunny and my makeup will last even thru the hottest day! Of course, if it gets REALLLLY hot and sweaty, some will come off but it will wear off nicely and non-patchy.
I wear less makeup, the best thing ever is the M.A.C Liquid Powder, I’ve never seen such a perfect summer powder just great ! I wear sheer lipsticks and I avoid mascara.

I always wear Primer on my eyes and face. I’ve been wearing eye primer now for a number of years, but face primer is a whole new game for me and I LOVE it and highly recommend to anyone who wears foundation or even tinted moisturizer. Why, because it’s truly extends the wear of your product AND more importantly, to me anyway, you get truer colour and less noticeable oxidation and no skin sucking vultures preying on your finish . I tend to go very sparse on the foundation or use tinted moisturizer when it’s super hot and just apply enough product to cover the off-tone bits and even out my complexion. Still, that being said, in the super high humidity, you just end up getting less wear all around.. maybe 6 to 7 hours at best. That’s better than 2 or 3 and looking like an oily greasy mess!

In summer (not that Belgian summer is much of a summer, but okay…) I use face and eyelid primer. And if necessary, I’ll reapply my setting powder throughout the day.
And I just try to keep cool and not do anything that will get me even more sweaty.
I definitely rely ony Boots mattifier in addition to my primer to keep my oils at bay. While I always wear foundation throughout the year, I do wet my makeup brush that I use to apply the foundation with and it not only helps the makeup last all day, but also makes it dewey and thinner in texture. I set powder only in my T-zone and touchup with blotting papers or a light dusting of my Clinique stay matte sheer powder.
I wear NARS’ oil-free primer on my face every day under foundation (the only time I can think I might not wear it is if I’m going swimming), and NARS’ eye primer, too! I recently switched from UD when I discovered how much better NARS was. I also use Bare Escentuals’ Mineral Veil to set my makeup, and it holds up pretty well.

Less is better! I tend to spray tan more to compensate, when Im tan I tend to always wear less. I wear Mac’s Medium tinted moisturizer with MysticGlo added to it, it feels lighter than my other favorite option which is Laura Merciers tinted moisturizer. I set it with a light brush of Macs Mineralize Skin Finishers. I wear lip glosses no lipstick, waterproof mascaras, and maybe a Mac paint pot on the lid. I do not wear Kohl liners at all, they tend to melt off. In fact I prefer no eye shadows or much liner at all, if any. If I was to wear blush I think I might go with a Mac cream blushs and perhaps set it with a powder over the top.
I wonder if Urban Decay’s “Up All Night” setting spray would help?

I really haven’t been wearing any face makeup just because I can’t keep it on my (very) oily skin! And for some reason, my skin is going through a strange angry period where it’s irritated and sensitive, prone to redness, breaking out, SUPER oily, and scaly on my nose, upper lip, and inner cheeks. Soooo strange–I think it’s stress. It’s truly astounding how much stress can effect your body! But anyway, I was in search of the perfect primer and moisturizer but I had to give that up for a little while until my skin recovers…

Do you have rosecea by any chance? If it’s possible, a ermatologist and treat it with oral medications.
Laura Mercier has a mattifier that I use as a primer but you can also put on top of makeup. I also use UD’s Deslick spray or All nighter spray to set make up. Have had good luck w/ this method. I have also switched to a BB for summer. I like Two Faced and Sarah McNamara. Have Garnier but haven’t opened it yet.
I tend to wear less makeup, and I love Palladio’s Wet/Dry foundation. It’s a powder if used dry, but a very well pigmented one. I may use a sheer matte cream blush, spread very thin. Waterproof eyeliner, and a nice bright/nude lipbalm. I also use palladio blotting papers to help with oil control. Cheap, and you get a lot of them.
I use Tarte Clean Slate Poreless Primer under my makeup and since I work in a hot dry cleaners midday I put some mattifying gel by Peter Thomas Roth over my makeup to take away the shine…
I haven’t really found a method yet… I have oily skin and normally wear Laura Mercier’s Mineral Foundation (no set concealer, though of what little I *have* tried, I like Maybelline’s Under-Eye Age Eraser and Mary Kay’s liquid concealer best), but I find even powder disintegrates on my oiliest areas and especially around my acne…and it’s not pretty. I *was* looking into primers, but so far my favorite method for the summer–after using a bit of Jergen’s tanning moisturizer to give myself some color (and combat any redness)–is to use La Roche-Posay’s tinted sunscreen to even out the complexion, and then just use a touch of concealer be retouched later in the day. I’ll try to dust just the slightest, slightest bit of the mineral foundation on top to ‘set,’ but I have to be really careful or else it’ll look powdery and then cake up later (failing more often than not). Maybe there IS a miracle product out there, but since EVERY cream, liquid, or powder product I’ve tried just disintegrates on me in the heat, I’m kind of skeptical–and not really willing to spend any more money trying things. If I could find an HG concealer that’s probably all I’d ever use (and if I could get rid of my acne…..)!
Two suggestions: try a mattifying moisturizer with sunscreen…one that comes to mind is Cosmedicine Medi Matte SPF 30 and always carry blotting film (Clean and Clear makes a good one). Blotting film works much better than the paper or powder and it only removes sweat and oil,not your makeup.
Less is more is my ‘thing’ most of the time in the hot weather. I really have such good luck with TARTE Smooth Operator for a tinted moisturizer. If I want/need more coverage, Tarte’s Amazonian clay full coverage foundation really stays put on me and drinks up surface oils. I also this year have fallen hard for IT Cosmetics – I like their Bye-Bye Pores ‘powder’ as well as their anti-aging foundation. It’s the ONLY dry foundation of any kind I can wear now without it ever settling into lines and making my face look old. I don’t know if it’s me or BE foundation changed. But I cannot wear if any more and I used to wear it for years for a light finish. Now it just makes me look chalky, cakey, and it settles into lines I did not even know I had and pulled them up for more than just me to see! I have both the UD matte and UD all nighter sprays – honestly I don’t see a difference between the 2 on my skin. I do go with a lighter, oil free, always spf day moisturizer (or tinted moisturizer). One of my favs is Ole Hendrickson’s Truth Revealed Super Cream with spf – it’s got something in it that just makes my skin ballanced and imparts this healthy skin glow like I am wearing a face full of Vit C. I can wear that and the IT Cosmetics Foundation and be set. My go to blushes in summer are usually either a Jose Maran color stick or one of two shades of Tarte color sticks that are in the Amazonian Clay line – the other ones by Tart with no Amazonian clay don’t last long on me at all.
I live in Texas, where summers mean months straight of triple digit heat. I use Neutrogena Pure and Free Liquid Daily Sunblock SPF 50 as my sunscreen and primer because it dries down to a matte finish so it protects my skin from the sun and it provides a flawless base for makeup. I dont wear much makeup in the summer. I typically just reach for bronzer, blush and lipstick. I have normal skin thats dry in cold weather (since there really isnt much cold down here its usually normal year round) so I’ve never had the issue of makeup sliding down my face or caking up. I dont wear foundation, powder, tinted moisturizer, BB cream, concealer etc in the summer because I dont feel like I need to. The summer heat gives me a glow to my face and more often then not I skip blush because my cheeks are usually flushed on their own. But I wont go without bronzer. I wear sunscreen everyday so my face is a LOT lighter than the rest of my body and without bronzer, I wouldnt match. Right now I have fair skin on my face and medium skin on the rest of my body. Not cool. When I get back from the beach it usually evens out no matter how much sunscreen I wear or how much time I spend in the shade/under a hat so I dont worry about it too much.
In heat and humidity I find less is best try a beauty balm(bb) and then smashbox’s halo or a dusting of bronzer and you skin looks and feels lgreat in the heat. You can always freshen it with more bronzer or halo later in the day.daytime
I totally Set aside my usual foundation for the summer. I’ve been using Too Faced BB cream & I love its light, barely there feeling. I do apply a small amount of concealer & blot powder. Just prior to leaving the house I spritz my face w/ Fix+ which I keep in the refrigerator during the summer.
First of all, if I am going to be in the heat for an extended period of time, I tend to reach for my longwearing, water/sweat-resistant products. Also, I use primers underneath my makeup to extend the wear. Also, I feel that less is more when it comes to wearing makeup in the heat. No one wants to layer their face with makeup for it to just melt off. Depending on where I’m going, I may also choose not to wear any makeup at all.
