In my collection, my favorite matte palettes are Urban Decay Ultimate Basics and Tarte Amazonian Clay Mattes. If I had to pick just one, I’d go with the UD palette. I love cool neutral mattes and the top row of the Ultimate Basics palette is perfect for me. And I got it for half price when it went on sale many months ago.
I also own the KVD Shade & Light Eye Palette, but I don’t like working with it, which is fine with me, now that I stay away from all of her products.
If you love cool neutral mattes, the Viseart Cool Mattes 1 & 2 are the best on the market! I use mine every day.
I don’t own even one of these. I’m proud of myself! And I have been quite tempted to buy at least three of them (Viseart Dark Mattes, Zoeva Matte Spectrum (still looking at this every time I see it) and Makeup Forever Artist (so glad I can’t find it)).
I actually sold my Viseart Neutral Mattes but kept the Dark Mattes, because I found I used that one more oddly! The neutral mattes colors I just didn’t find myself using much, whereas oddly I find the dark mattes more wearable, some color but because they’re all dark, and matte, not so in your face for everyday.
I’m a shimmer kind of girl so none of these appeal to me that much the dark matte looks really pretty though
I own none of the above. I cannot think of a matte only palette that I love.
Matte-only tend to be neutral. Probably why I loved Safari. I like the small Zoeva matte and the big matte spectrum for all matte colors. Don’t use Ultimate Basics (or the Viseart neutral, cool1 and cool2) as often as I could/should, but NB2 is my usual pull out to complete looks. The Viseart neutral is probably the best performing of all in my stash….but that doesn’t mean I like it best!
I am more of a satin/shimmer girl myself and only use mattes on an occasional basis. I don’t own any of these, but if I had to pick one, I would go for Tarte in Bloom, as I would use these shades.
Me too, Genevieve. I’m not a mattes kinda gal. I have 2 of the palettes listed above – Naked2Basics and the KvD Shade and Light one. I like them both but tend not to use them on their own – gotta put me a bit of shimmer somewhere!
Kylie Cosmetics Purple Palette, MAC Eyeshadow X 15 Cool Neutral, and Thrive Causemetics Warm Neutrals Palette
I just depotted both Amazonian Clay Matte Palettes and it’s like a whole new life. I got bored with all matte, haha! I like using them as transition colors and layering on a shimmer or bolder color. I don’t love that they fade faster than other shadows, but there were some shades I really love from each, and I think they were a great value and I’ve gotten tons of mileage on them.
This post couldn’t be more timely. I’ve really been researching matte palettes lately. I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s recommendations.
I used to be all about the mattes, now I consider them filler. I have the KvD S+L palette, and it works great for rounding out looks created from the wilder palettes I own (and my huge archive of singles). If I didn’t have the KvD palette, I’d probably buy the Viseart Dark Matte palette, as well as three more matte shades: a skin color (base and correcting), a slightly darker than skin color (transition), and a slightly lighter than skin color (browbone/inner corner).
My favorite is Viseart Cool Mattes 2. I wear it either on its own or as a base palette. It’s probably my most used palette.
