Boscia Revitalizing Black Hydration Gel

Boscia Revitalizing Black Hydration Gel ($38.00 for 1.0 oz.) is a moisturizer that can be used for either day or evening application. Boscia states that this moisturizer is supposed to “refine skin texture, brighten skin clarity, and minimize the look of pores instantly and over time.” According to the brand, it’s suitable to all skin types.

It’s gel-based, which means it has a thicker consistency (like a gel!) but feels very lightweight and as if you’re applying cool water against the skin. It absorbs very quickly, which is a huge plus if you’re short on time. The first time I used it was an interesting experience, because it really is a charcoal-hued gel, so it’s not quite opaque black, but it’s darker than gray (it actually does contain charcoal, which helps to absorb excess oil and detoxify). It spreads easily across the skin, but it does tint the face gray while it absorbs, but once it’s dry, it disappeared. Initially, I felt a very subtle cooling sensation, less than a tingle I’d say, that disappears soon after it starts. It hydrated well in some ways, but I did still have some drier patches on my cheeks that this just couldn’t combat. If you have more combination to oily skin, this would be more appropriate, given the ingredients Boscia calls out and the gel consistency–you definitely won’t feel like there’s a greasy layer of moisturizer on.

There’s a discernible scent of roses, charcoal, and something a little herbal. It’s not heavy, strong, nor does it linger. I smelled it mostly when I pumped it onto my fingers but almost not at all when I applied it. It’s packaged in an opaque black tub with an airless pump mechanism. I couldn’t find a way to unscrew the top (short of prying it open, but me trying to pry something over with a sharp edge is likely to result in a trip to the emergency room), so I don’t know if anything was left over, but it felt empty.

My only real problem with this was that it ran out quickly–less than a month of evening usage–and it wasn’t all that surprising once I read how much the jar contains. A lot of moisturizers contain around 1.7 fl. oz., but this one only contains 1.0 oz. That makes this much pricier than it initially appears! I felt that I needed to use as much of this product as other moisturizers, so it wasn’t one of those “a little goes a long, long way” such that you would use less of this and therefore it would last longer than other moisturizers.

I got a sample of the cleanser in this line and the smell stopped me from even finishing the sample. Now, I’m not sure if the two products have the same scent, but the cleanser smelled, to me, very, very strongly like black pepper. I couldn’t stand it.

I use a different Boscia product in the same packaging – there is no way to screw them open so I pried apart two finished jars to see how much waste there was. Surprisingly, not even enough for one application was left in the jar, so its very efficient. Made me feel a lot better about not being able to open it easily 🙂

I heard several people say you can screw it open and how, but I haven’t personally tried yet because I haven’t finished it. I really love how it feels though; Boscia always absorbs quickly and never feels greasy on me.

So ironic, I bought this moisturizer about 10 days ago and discontinued use 2 days ago.  I have combination skin but a few areas where I get extremely dry patches (I have psoriasis) and had been using Kate Somerville’s Goat Milk cream with great results but I got bored (as I do) and wanted to try something new.  I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who gets any type of dry skin, it’s just not that moisturizing.

I like the idea of a gel because I find waiting for moisturizer to absorb rather time consuming, but necessary.  I can get away with the step, but my foundation/TM always applies better if I wait.  However, I need a beefier moisturizer and even though my skin is combination, my dry areas are epic as in a Tinted Moisturizer alone isn’t going to do it.  And butylene glycol??  Wouldn’t be my first choice!

Aw, sounds like the exact opposite of my last moisturizer–my alba oil-free aloe whatever moisturizer (it’s, er, the hawaiian line one in a jar that isn’t floral scented) lasted ages.  I’m still not done with it!  Granted, I’m not heavy-handed with it, but I swear it took me at least a month of daily use to even put a dent in it.  Luckily, it’s rated for either 12M or 24M.  It’s got a wide enough mouth and I have to put my hands in it all the time that I’d follow the dating on that to the letter.

I am confused Christine I remember in a few posts you mentioned you don’t use silicone containing products, especially if they are at top of the ingredients list, apart from water dimethicone is the second ingredient of this stuff, did it have any effects on you I wonder?

Christine-Temptalia Avatar

@casey23 No, it didn’t!  I usually use a moisturizer that has silicones in it – I just avoid the primers because they’re full of silicones, so then it’s too much when I already have silicones in my foundation and moisturizer 🙂

I tested this out in store, and while it was nice, it’s really similar to the clinique moisture surge and laneige water sleeping pack, both of which are better quality and more worth it to me. There’s just too little product. 🙁

This has lasted me for almost 3 months now but I only use it in the mornings. But wow, I figured Boscia was about being all natural. I am sad to see that silicone is the 3rd ingredient! especially in a skincare product. I am not going to be using this anymore. It does feel light and is cooling and was great for my combo skin but it’s not a primer so silicone shouldn’t even be listed! 🙁

You can open the container… it just screws in the opposite direction than we’re used to. I’ve been using this product for a few months and I really like it. I get a couple months worth out of one jar.

this moisturizer literally cleared up my acne! I love it and cannot do without it. it has a glycolic acid in it and thats how it works to clear the skin. I do wish there was more in the jar though!

i’m surprised this worked for some oily/combo girls commenting below cuz…the sample i got caused more shine on my nose than anything! so much for oil absorbing… i was too embarrassed to ever try this sample again, boscia you’ve mislead me!
