Did your makeup style or preferences change this year?

I don’t think so, though I recently switched the shade on my brow gel, which does look different (well, to me). I think I can safely say I’ve done gold/pink/berry enough times this year that I’m eager for a new trend to tire of next year!

“a new trend to tire of next year” – that is funny. I’m glad I don’t follow trends or have to follow trends (as you do, Christine, to keep the blog current) and can just wear what I like and avoid what I don’t, whether it’s the “Colour of the Year” or the latest trend! So I don’t anticipate anything changing for me though I would like to see an end to the seemingly inexhaustible procession of red-based eyeshadow palettes. ABH started it and then all the imitators began imitating and for people like me, who just have no use for palettes like those, it became a real let-down (and I think it makes the imitators just look like copy-cats and not very original at all).

I wouldn’t say I follow trends consciously, but since I spend most of my time trying new products, I tend to absorb them that way, I think. When I look at the looks I’ve posted this year, it’s insane how many gold/pink/plum ones there are… and they all look very similar, lol.

Christine, I realize that in your case, it is your “job” – it is how you keep Temptalia a viable and meaningful resource for the rest of us. And for those who work in the makeup industry, of course they too have to keep current and wear the new trends – it’s their job to push whatever is new onto consumers. It’s like hair stylists – a lot of them wear really cutting edge (pardon the pun) styles and/or colours because they have to showcase those looks. I remember someone here (wish I could remember who it was) commenting that their wish for you was that you would get to wear looks of your own choosing at least some of the time, rather than having to wear what you are testing/reviewing.

I was just looking at some recent looks you did that are the polar opposite of red/pink/plum/gold….they were 2 gorgeous bronze and green looks featuring the new MUFE shadows. So you are more versatile and wide-reaching in your creativity than you may realize.

My red/coral lipstick phase ended and I rarely wear either shade now. I also started wearing highlighter regularly and learned to do my brows better. Although I don’t wear brightly colored eyeshadows, I’ve branched out some & have started wearing a wider variety of shades. Those are the main things I can think of. I get a lot of inspiration from you and the readers of Temptalia!

Ditto on the brow scheme. My hair colour has drastically changed, so my eyebrow routine has changed as well. I’m also going for a more natural feathering brow rather than super structured.

I’ve learned the importance of a tiny amount of black/dark grey shadow for grounding more dramatic eyes looks.. giving it a little extra something something.

I’ve been wearing fuller coverage more satin/matte foundations when I used to prefer medium dewy. Something about how dewy foundations now sit on my mature skin doesn’t please me.

I went cruelty free with my makeup at the end of this year. That was really challenging! But, in doing so, I’ve discovered a bunch of really fantastic Indie brands; 2 of which I’m now an Affiliate with. I’ve also realized that I am a little more creative than I thought I was (with makeup) and have been using product (like glitter shadows) that “traditionally” would be outside of age-appropriate for me – but they still look really good – I think it’s all in the application and balance.

Hi MacKensie! I don’t want to break any rules here (Christine please delete if not ok) but I think I can share this since for some reason my site info doesn’t populate – I’m at @Binxcat4ever on media and there’s a blog link there. Everything on the blog is cf. I’m also an affiliate with 2 brands and if there’s something you like, I have my discount codes posted. In general, the loose products across the board have been really good. I’ve bought from Darling Girl (I’m an Affiliate but we buy our product), Notoriously Morbid, My Pretty Zombie, Glamour Doll Eyes, Apocalyptic Beauty, LA Splash (‘m an Affiliate but we buy our product), Concrete Minerals, Geek Chic, Medusa’s Make-Up….probably a few more. I feel like the Indie’s do much better on loose than other brands. Other highights: Notoriously Morbid’s lipsticks (bullet style) are good and the packaging is really cool. LA Splash’s liquid lipsticks were the first I could wear that weren’t drying. Concrete Minerals has a good selection of loose matte shadows. Darling Girl has really pigmented tinted balms. I’m also in love with the Darling Girl Glitta Grip. Unlike the Nyx glitter primer, theirs is clear so you can use a base shade, tap it on (just a tiny bit), and then tap on your fav shimmer/loose/glitter on top – on me, it doesn’t budge. Geek Chic does some nice sets in tins. Mainstream stuff: The Elf Mad for Matte Jewel Tones palette is surprisingly good. The new Nyx Duo Chromatic lippies are off the charts if you love a duochrome metallic lip. Also their new highlighter palette is reasonable quality and the warm-toned one is a darn close dupe to the KVD Metal Crush one. Juvia’s Place palettes are solid in general; with some shades doing a bit better with damp application. If you have any product questions I’m always happy to answer (if there’s something you’re thinking about and I’ve tested it) – and always respond to questions on products on my social media.

I think the biggest change for me this year was going a lot bolder with lipstick, adding red and fuchsia shades to the mix. For years, I stuck only with nudes, mauves, and browns.

I’m not big on trend-following, but I did try contouring and highlighting. I quickly ditched the contour, but I still use a touch of Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Highlighter 01 on my cheekbones once in awhile.

Style pretty much stayed the same but I’m varying my eye looks a bit (same colors, just a little less here and skip using this color this time around, etc.) and placing my cheek products a little differently (more towards the hairline and leaving the center of the face more open). As far as preferences, this is the time of year (and in June) I de-stash, and this go around I have prioritized using up lipsticks that I think may turn so all of my looks will be based on this or that color for the next 3 or 4 months. However, I don’t know know how long that will last or how practical that is with certain colors – fuschias are not an everyday or work wearable color for me, so that might just get tossed/given to nieces and save me the trouble, or maybe that one will go in the fridge. This definitely puts buying those fun novelty colors into perspective. A case could be made for minis.

Not drastically, but I’ve adopted some current trends in a personal, toned-down version: I wear highlighter almost daily (subtle ones for a nice glow, not a metallic finish), I’ve started using foundations with a bit more coverage, at least on special occasions, and I pay more attention to my brows that I did in the past. On the other hand, I tried wearing the reds and red-based pinks on the eyes that have been wildly popular since ABH Modern Renaissance, and no, whatever look I try, I don’t like those colors on me!

I’ve been playing around with halo eye looks a lot more frequently lately! It’s been really fun to practice a new way of applying my shadows, and I personally love how they look.

Hmmm…I don’t think it has, really? Or at least I cannot think of anything offhand. The only thing I did do differently style wise, was to incorporate more micro-glitter eyeshadows on my mobile lid after having gotten ahold of Nyx Glitter Primer. Found it to reflect very differently than the usual metallics and shimmers. Less aging, because it doesn’t emphasize fine lines, but instead reflects light *away* from them in a rather flattering way.

My style changed radically as I learned to understand my eye shape—- hooded and downturned. My makeup technique is now completely different. However my color preferences have not changed. Much as I would love to wear many different shades, it’s really the warm neutrals that look best on me and I really do not have the patience to maintain a bold lipstick.

Lisa Avatar

I’ve started wearing less makeup truthfully – I’ve started to appreciate a fresh face. I still like to wear a fill face at times but my everyday routine is feature enhancing 🙂 I think now that I’m in my 30s my make up has really shifted. Less glitter, more matte or refined shimmer and just to even my skin out vs mask it

Like Mariella, I will not wear orange or red shadows. Artistic and on trend, yes; flattering, no, unless you enjoy looking like you’ve been punched. I never really use highlighters so they’re lost on me as well. And I’m done with matte lips, liquid or otherwise. I hope (and think) the metallic lip trend will pass quickly, and severe brows seem to have had their day as well. I’m looking and hoping for a return to more natural lips (although I love reds)–sheer textures, less pigment, and comfortable formulations; more innovative and natural blushes and blush formulas (like NARS liquid); more liquid/cream shadows in natural shades (warm or cool); and maybe a return to cream eyeliner (I like gels and liquids, but prefer the look of cream). Hopefully the in-you-face (so to speak) trends are over and we’ll have a return to a natural look, and companies won’t be so afraid of trying something new instead of copying everyone else.

Well, my schedule at work changed quite a bit. I have to be at work at 4am on most days; so, I am definitely not going makeup crazy like I used to. On those days, skin care is what prevails. On my two days around, I wear a full face; but only if I have somewhere to go. With that said, two staples remain: lipstick and foundation.

AB Avatar

No, the colors/tones and types of products that help me look my best haven’t really changed. Warm neutrals have always been my cornerstone but I’ve branched into warm berries, gold and copper to spice it up a bit. For lips, a little bolder with more reds and strong corals still in a core warm color family. I take better care filling my sparse eyebrows, which has worked out pretty well.

The biggest differences are that I’ve entirely sworn off foundation, and I’ve stopped setting my face with powder, now I just set my undereyes. I’ve also almost completely stepped away from liquid matte lipsticks. Oh! And like someone else mentioned, I also went cruelty free! It’s been a big change and I’ve had to say goodbye to a lot of brands I really enjoyed (Nars and Mac mostly), but it’s so worth it to me.

Genevieve Avatar

No, my make up preferences and style haven’t changed at all this year. If anything, with the high number of releases of very warm toned eyeshadow palettes, it has shown me that it’s best to stick to what works for me. I don’t follow ‘trends’ at all.
I am still gravitating towards cooler toned neutrals for my eyes and am preferring a more matte, less dewy finish in my foundations.
I still love bronze, berry and ginger shades for lips.
I want to thank you Christine for your wonderful work on this blog and to all the readers here that are so helpful, friendly and caring.

Hi all, Wishing everyone a splendid holiday time.
A few new (to me) products have changed my look a bit. Urban Decay and Ciate lip primers really do help my lip products last longer, and Sephora gel lip liners also make a big difference (over entire lip as base or solo). I’ve been doing contouring/highlighting more often, and often do highlight that is a lighter shade of foundation/concealer for dimension, no shine. If it’s shimmery, highlight often goes on under foundation for subtlety. Using a great blending brush for all my makeup – you don’t have to clean it in between products, nothing transfers, blends beautifully – Hakudoh (sp?) brand. Worthwhile splurge, use daily, lasts forever I’m guessing. Snail masks! Adding sterile eye drops to dried out mascaras, or translucent powder to formulas that are too wet. Use a great mascara wand fm expensive mascara on cheaper formula and get much better performance (Lancome Hypnose wand). Starting liner flick from edge of bottom lash line, lifting (1/8 or so) from end to meet upper lid liner….think that’s it. Happy hacking!

Oh yes! I’ve fallen in deep love with the warm shades and just about ordered all from super shock from Colourpop, others from Nyx and am really enjoying them. They really help pop out the green in my hazel eyes. Tonight wearing Static for Christmas diner at my brothers home! 🙂
Merry Christmas to all beauties on Temptalia! ????

I went more neutral, purely for the sake of working through various forms of makeup to classify, describe, rate, and decide to keep or discard. I think I’m going to have to step it up, and instead of going “no makeup” neutral in two areas (e.g. neutral cheeks and eyes when testing lipsticks), I’m going to need to test out products for two areas at once to finish my project faster. Kind of looking forward to it, except that the “2 neutral, 1 test” approach allowed me to spend less time thinking about my makeup; switching it up will mean more planning. [sigh] Oh well … needs to be done.

Yes! I discovered YouTube beauty channels and everything I thought I knew was now augmented. I still don’t buy into all their rules, like that you need a matte transition shade for every look, but before YouTube, I didn’t use highlighter, undereye concealer, or a lot of other products.

brittany Avatar

I’m slowly breaking away from the warm nude eyes. I’ve been loving the Colourpop Element of Surprise palette to play with color.

I’ve been playing more with lip colors like in the berry family, light muted pink/purples or plum/browns.

As far as the routine goes, I don’t contour as much, wear mascara and eyeliner if I have to, and I don’t do bother applying my face routine like a youtuber. I don’t wear shadow as much and go for the Super Shock Shadows for pretty two-toned looks.

I’ve learned to avoid a ton of uncessary steps in my makeup.
