Have you worked in the beauty industry before?
Sometimes, I don’t feel like I do traditionally, but I imagine most people would classify beauty blogging as being part of the industry at this point! So… yes 🙂

Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!
Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).
We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Yes – about ten years ago I had my own mobile beauty business called Brush Strokes. Sadly it didn’t work out as there was too much competition in my area, but at least I made some good friends along the way 🙂
Worked at both Ulta and then Sephora… I wouldn’t do it again.
I worked for Clinique for four years.
No, but I certainly do my part to support it monetarily! 🙂
I worked at a perfumerie that mixed custom scents for a few months.
I really liked the work but the owner was a horror, so I quit and went back to working in jewelry.
I have, for a skincare company. I really enjoyed it, and I feel like I’m a lot more informed about ingredients and claims now.
I’m in beauty college, so yes for the future!!! I’ll be a working free lance artist SOON!
Yes. A number of years ago I worked a part time job for Lancome. They offered me the manager’s position but my full time position was far more lucrative! I do sometimes miss working with a brand and/or retail beauty.
No, I never have and sometimes think I would have liked to have been a MUA but not that many people chose that path back in the 60’s and 70’s. Given that I have used makeup since I was about 13 and am now 63 I feel like I have been in the industry, LOL.
Yes, I did. Many years ago, though, back in the 80’s. I was a MUA and Asst. Mgr. of a now defunct cosmetics company. Defunct and mysteriously it seems to have disappeared. Anyway, I truly loved the work itself. Especially when I was given full creative licence with some of our more adventurous customers!
No.
Have you move these daily questions to appear at a different time?
It used to be 10pm PST.
Yes, we did, due to sustained issues with posts not going up as scheduled and having to manually be pushed through. All posts have been shifted during hours where I’m more likely to be awake and able to deal with missed posts.
I’m fairly sure that merely working in a drugstore make-up and perfume department doesn’t count – but industry wise it still gave some nice insights, especially concerning consumer behaviour and wishes. I also liked being able to pick a new high-end lipstick and perfume each morning to put on before the store opening 😉
Yes. On and off Cosmetic retail for 20+ years, Freelance MUA for the last 7 years.
Never have but feel as a chemist since I love to check them all out. I call it my research. Lol! Must have a ph.d by now.
Many years ago I did work for Estee Lauder. It was an eye opening experience and I learned a lot. Would I do it again? No…too cut throat.
I’ve been a beauty advisor at Ulta for a month now! 🙂
Yes! I briefly worked at L’Oréal as a Marketing Intern for Maybelline and essie. So. much. free. makeup. Haha!
No, just make up obsessed.
No, I haven’t worked in the beauty industry at all, but after reading your blog and a few others, I feel like I know more than a lot of MUA’s out there.
When I was 16 (a very, very long time ago) i worked on the Christmas counter for Estee Lauder and that was fun, with all the husbands, boyfriends and sons coming in to buy gifts for their female relativess…. I loved that Chrissy job.
Yes, in the early 90’s while going to university I worked for Estee Lauder, Lancome, Prescriptives, and Chanel at Macy’s and Nordstrom. Right out of high school I got my cosmetology license before going to university so beauty related part-time jobs were what I did through university to pay the bills.
I worked at SiJCP for three years and I am currently a business manager at a skin care counter. I much prefer the Sephora plan more than department store business!
I was a journalist and magazine writer who specialized in health, beauty and fitness. Quit around the time the Internet started. Used to modem stories to my NY editors. Paid well, but very isolated work. No freebies, no promises to MDs they would appear in the piece, just straight, well-researched, unbiased journalism. Rewrites were a given as stories went thru five editors. I’d work on a 5,000 word story for two to three months. It embarrases me to see what appears as writing on much of the Internet. Did have fun in NY, being photographed and interviewing world famous derms and plastics. Because I was doing in-depth reporting (like explaining how lasers work) I rarely had a chance to write to write about specific beauty products. That’s why I so enjoy Christine and Temptalia, the only blog I read!
Yes. I worked part-time for Ulta as a Prestige Beauty Advisor and loved it. I worked for a brand new store and had the opportunity of attending various training sessions hosted by different brands like Benefit and Smashbox. Along with this came lots of gratis makeup, which was awesome.
If the pay was better I probably would have quit my full time job because I really enjoyed the experience, the industry and the interaction with customers and vendors.
Yes, at Ulta when I was in college. It was very eye opening!
I worked for Prescriptives in the early 90’s, then Lancome and Origins. I have freelanced on and off since then.
If blogging counts 😛
No. I was a makeup artist for the local opera and ballet companies, but that’s a far cry from “beauty industry.”
