How important is it that a lip color be moisturizing for you?
If I’m going to be wearing it multiple times a week, I want it to be a little hydrating but don’t have ultra dry lips so getting most of my added hydration in the morning/evening (with lip balm) is sufficient for me. I’d only sacrifice hydration and opt for something deliberately drying if I had an occasion where I needed extremely long wear or transfer-resistant color.
Not at all, though I don’t want my lip products to be drying, either. I’m generally more happy on the matte end of things, and in fact, I find truly creamy lipsticks (and by extension, glosses) uncomfortable to wear. Also, downright annoying.
That’s a good question! It doesn’t have to be particularly moisturizing, as long as it’s not drying my lips out or making them feel tight and parched. I do wear a pretty heavy duty lip balm to bed at night, plus will throw on a lighter balm or a MAC Cremesheen Lipglass on if I’m just hanging around the house. So my lips are in pretty decent condition, I suppose. Also, I do wear MAC Prep & Prime Lips under almost all matte lipsticks I own. That definitely helps keep my pucker in good shape regardless of most lipsticks I put over it!
I have found out during these last few years of never ending mattes and/or semi-mattes that I need moisturizing lipsticks. Mind you my go to lipstick for YEARS was Revlon Pink Truffle Colorburst Lip Butter. I would branch out and use other colorburst lip butter colors for variety.
Example: I love the color of MAC D for Danger wore it for 3 hours and gave it to a co-worker as it was far too dry for me to handle as my lips were starting to hurt at the 2nd hour and I could nt stand it any longer. I have purchased the Nars and Bite dupes found them less drying but, still too drying for me. I am going to try the EL Dupe next.
I wouldn’t say that a non-hydrating formula would be a deal breaker for me but of course, I would prefer a little hydration or at least not horribly drying. I tend to doctor a lot of my really drying lipsticks with a balm over/under for more comfort. Because I have lip lines I do like lipsticks that stay in place which generally means a drier formula, not necessarily one that dries the lips. Hope that makes sense. In short, if I love the color I am willing to work with the formula for all but the most drying, cracking, flaking types.
I don’t have dry lips, so it’s not terribly important. I just try to stay away from super-drying matte liquid lipsticks.
So a few days ago, I would have been like, “eh, it’s nice but lipstick doesn’t HAVE to be hydrating”. But now that I’ve had a *really* painful, epically disappointing experience with Charlotte Tilbury’s liquid lipsticks, I’m going to say it’s important. 6-7 on a scale of 1-10. I have dry lips most of the time and matte (synonymous with non-hydrating) lipsticks are very unforgiving unless formula is absolutely amazing. Tom Ford’s matte lipsticks are really great, sadly for my wallet. (Luckily/unluckily, the shade range is pretty limited.)
I can deal with non-hydrating lipsticks but anything that’s actually dehydrating is a no. Most liquid lipsticks for example. I do find her (non-matte) Matte Revolution lipsticks comfortable though so I’d say my tolerance is reasonable. I also dislike lipsticks that are very balmy and sheer like the Rouge Coco Lip Shines. (Good sheer formulas: Surratt Lipsliques and Tom Ford’s (very well pigmented!) Lip Color Shines and).
Bottom line: if a lipstick is actively uncomfortable, then I can’t/won’t wear it, however pretty. A non-drying formula is very important to me.
I love the phrase “actively uncomfortable.” That describes how I felt about ABH’s matte lipstick Dead Roses. (Curious…what happened with the Tilbury liquid lipstick?)
I don’t like lipsticks that are bone dry or, just the opposite, gooey. The most comfortable lipsticks for me are MAC Satins and UD Comfort Mattes. Colourpop Ultra Satins are the most comfortable liquid lipsticks, in my opinion.
Very important to me, which is one of the several reasons I dislike most of the matte and liquid-matte lipsticks. If I’m wearing a lipstick I know isn’t very moisturizing, I will put a lip balm on before applying it and let that sink in a bit but I find it tends to have a negative impact on wear (not just wear-time but also “smear-abilitiy”, if that’s even a concept) in a different way from how a good moisturizing lipstick (like UD F-Bomb or my new points perk of Givenchy lipstick) wears.
Not highly. Never have to wear a lip product the whole day, so if it’s uncomfortable, off. The only one that’s major uncomfortable, even with extensive prebalming is ABH LL. No prob w/kvd, CP, or others. That could be why I waited so long to get other abh stuff, including gloss. Was quite turned of by that LL. But 2 layers of balm (bite agave, usually) make most ok.
It’s not important that a lip color be moisturizing, though that is nice, but it is very important that it not be drying!
As long as it doesn’t dry the heck out of my lips, I’m fine. I do like them to at least be a bit moisturizing as my lips just tend to be naturally somewhat dry anyways.
I don’t look for lipstick or gloss to provide moisture for my lips. I wear lip balm underneath everything, all the time. On the weekend, I tend to choose products that do provide moisture so I don’t have to take multiple products for reapplying.
I prefer a moisturizing lip product for comfortable wear. I will occasionally go for a long-lasting matte liquid lip if I’m worried about wear, but I don’t mind re-applying, so it’s rare that I wear anything that drying. I like the feel of creamy lip products and don’t really love the way my lips feel with a drying lip product – I actually find it distracting and find myself worrying more about the wear and the look of my lips when the product is quite dry vs creamy or moisturizing.
Not at all! Most of the time it is more important that I don’t get it everywhere since I love loud lip colors. But I also have a bad habit of touching my lips when I am concentrating… womp womp.
I’m prone to very dry lips year round. Hydration is a must. No drying products, even with a layer of balm on.
If drying mattes were a 1 on a scale of 1-10 and ultra thin lip glosses were a 10, I’m about a 6 on the scale. I look awful in mattes and find them really uncomfortable to wear. (In truth, they drive me completely nuts, like hands that need desperately need some hand cream.) Most lip glosses, especially the DS brands I’ve tried, just break down my lipstick, slide into the corners, and bleed into my lip lines. I need a little slip in a creamy, opaque coverage for my lips to feel comfortable. When I use a lip liner as a lip base to increase longevity (so drying, ugh), I can’t wait to get the second layer of lipstick on over it. I’ve had success with only a handful of Nars and Chanel glosses, but that’s about it.
I will put it this way: it is important for me that the lipstick is not actively drying. If it is, then I will only use it on occasion, when it is a part of a special look. If it is supposed to be a workhorse lipsticks that is supposed to go with many looks, then it better be at least creemy. And I always have a moisturising sheer lipstick in my purse that I can reapply without a mirror
It’s pretty important to me, but, like most, as long as a lip product doesn’t actually dry my lips out I can deal with it. I cannot do liquid matte lipsticks, at all. I own a few that I occasionally break out but I nearly always regret it. With a few exceptions, like the CP USLs, I stick to bullet lipsticks or glosses, and I usually go with a creamy formula like the UD Vice creams or sheers, with the occasional comfort matte. I also love lip gloss.
First choice is always a moisturizing lip product, second choice non-drying if I really love the color. I no longer even try giving the dry kind (liquid and matte) a chance anymore, no matter how pretty the color. I’ve learned my lesson.
Very important if it isn’t moisturizing I will apply a clear gloss on top but I usually purchase lip products that aren’t drying. I would rather reapply then have a lip product that is drying on my lips. Your lips just look 100% better when they are hydrated!
All matte lipstick formulations dry my lips out so if I want that matte look, I use lip balm then lip liner and powder my lips to finish off. Any lipstick I buy would have to be non-drying on me (lots of formulations are advertised as hydrating but do end up drying my lips out anyway: like UD lipsticks).
I have chronically dry lips so I prefer moisturizing lipsticks. Something else against me is that so many lip products make my lips peel within the first hour or so of wear. I must be allergic to something but I have yet to figure out what irratates my lips. I’ll do a matte lip here and there for special occassions but my lips have to be in tip top condition or I won’t even attempt it. Lol I actually use a lanolin salve on my lips overnight that is intended for nursing mothers. It’s called Lansinoh. It’s really made an incredible difference in the condition of my lips. Nothing else seems to work as well and i’ve tried damn near everything that’s out there! If anyone can reccomend anything, i’d appreciate it.
I would say it is somewhat important but more important is that it isn’t drying and doesn’t FEEL dry on my lips. I don’t like the look of a flat matte, or matte liquid lipstick anyway so this isn’t usually an issue. I use a balm in the a.m. and a nighttime moisturizing treatment so during the day my lipstick can be “neutral” and I will be fine with it, thinking of my favorites in my collection it does seem that they tend to be moisturizing, (Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy, ELPCE-Sheer, Laura Mercier Healthy Lips, Tarte-I think Rainforest, Urban Decay Vice-both but especially the Sheer.)
Absolutely important. I have dry lips and cannot abide any lipstick that are not moisturising. Which is why I don’t use lip glosses and can’t wear matte lipsticks.
Pretty important! I have dry lips and when I look at my lip colors after doing the rest of my makeup, I internally groan when i realize the best one for my look is a drying formula. It also adds extra steps to the makeup reapplication process throughout the day as you have to apply lip balm first, wait for it to settle in, and then apply lip color later.
Very Important!
If I don’t keep my lips moisturized I go into a cycle of never ending Lizard Lips (peeling, cracking, feeling & looking horrible).
It’s pretty important to me. I do own a good handful of liquid-to-matte lipsticks, but I haven’t worn them as much these days because my lips have been feeling so dry recently. I’m also a lip balm junkie, so even slightly dry lips drive me crazy. I’m constantly applying lip balm.
Lately, if I want to wear a lip color, I like wearing the ColourPop Ultra Satins because they’re long wearing, but don’t shrivel up my poor lips like their mattes do. I just wish they’d come out with a satin dupe for Trap!
While I don’t want a lipstick that dries my lips obviously, I don’t care much. I always rub chapstick under anything so my lips are rarely dry. I do prefer a lipstick to last longer than to be so hydrating that rubs off on a cup of coffee that I don’t like at all.
I wouldn’t say it has to be moisturizing, but I do prefer a
Iipstick that is comfortable enough to wear on its own, if preferred, save for my lip primer. I find that lipsticks that do have moisturizing claims, like bareMinerals’ GenNude lipsticks, don’t last nearly is long. As a result, they have to be reapplied more often in a day, which I prefer not to have to do!
I don’t think I need it to be moisturizing, but you definitely don’t want it to be overly drying either!
