shu uemura Shusu Sleek Shampoo ($45.00 for 10 fl. oz.) and Conditioner ($55.00 for 8 fl. oz.) is a duo of products designed for “coarse and unruly hair.” The big deal behind the product is the usage of black cumin oil, which is supposed to provide “deep nourishment” and “discipline the hair fiber with a fluid touch.” There is also a Smoothing Treatment ($65.00 for 6 fl. oz.), which seems like a deep conditioner, in the line.
The first time I tried out this set, all I could do was marvel at the scent–it’s very earthy, spicy, and masculine. It was reminiscent of my favorite scent–Tom Ford Oud Wood–in how I reacted. It’s heady, and it lingers, though I don’t find myself smelling it constantly, I do catch whiffs of it periodically during the day that I washed it. The brand says the scent is “gardenia with green leaves,” but I get more of the black cumin oil coming through. (I’d love a bottle of eau de parfum of this scent!)
I liked both products a lot, and they do a fine job of giving my hair a straighter look (it is slightly wavy in places as a result of years of putting it up), assuming I leave it down to dry or blow dry. I’ve been using the set since the beginning of March, and I definitely have noticed it keeping my hair soft, hydrated, and less fly aways. I noticed that I was able to achieve better results–really sleek, soft falls of hair–when I blow dried my hair (I used a T3 Evolution). The results were good when left to air dry, but everything just seemed a little straighter and shinier with the blow dryer.
The shampoo lathered well and left my hair feeling clean but not stripped, while it had a thicker consistency. I actually used just the shampoo a few times alone, and my hair still felt soft and silky without conditioning afterward.
I love that the conditioner comes with a pump (wish the shampoo did, too!), because I always find myself pouring on the conditioner to get enough coverage on all of my hair, so it’s nice to be able to get a feel for how many pumps and be more consistent. The conditioner smoothes on easily, and it does a fabulous job of re-hydrating hair. For a conditioner, it has a thinner consistency, but I think that makes it easier to smooth on with less excess used.
These are rather rich formulas, though, and so I don’t think they’re the most appropriate for my hair type and as much as I love the scent, I’m not sure I’d make these my go-to personally–but I do think they will help those who are looking to tame fly aways and frizzy hairs, because this product did so well for me in those areas. I readily admit, however, that I don’t find my hair overly fussy, so I can only review based on my experience with my relatively easy-to-deal-with hair.

Sounds interesting and the bottles are attractive. I order my shampoo from France once a year and it is considerably cheaper and smells lovely… this might be a fun treat through for my hair :3

I tried this conditioner on my curly (3c-4a) sometimes frizzy hair && I hated it… It was too thin/watery and smelled kinda manly IMO for that kind of money my hair needs to look && feel phenomenal afterwards!

that is a LOT of money for shampoo and conditioner…which i go through like crazy. i love the bottle design though.

I thought I already spent too much on shampoo and conditioner, but that’s just over the top! (I use Phyto and Pureology)
I have curly (3a-b) hair, almost always frizzy. I’m on a constant hunt for my “holy grail” shampoo, conditioner, and styling product(s)… this could be it, but there’s no way I can afford them for $100, sigh… oh well.
I’d avoid these products if you have curly hair, as the shampoo contains a pretty harsh sulfate.
Try Wen Cleansing Conditioner…they’re natural,sulfate free and one step.QVC.com has some good try me kits.This is my HG hair product and it’s multi use(cleanser,leave in,styler,etc)so it’s really cut down on the haircare clutter,too!!
Can you please post a picture of the ingredients list for the conditioner as well? Would be very helpful.

I guess I am lucky to have low-maintenance hair. I get it styled every few months and haven’t coloured it in years. I do blow dry and curl or straighten a few times a week, but I have nice natural waves. I have used both expensive salon shampoo & conditioner and drug store shampoo & conditioner, and salon products never make enough of a difference for me to spend my money on. The styling products do, however.
My 1 litre salon set didn’t even cost 100 dollars all together LOL. Granted they were half off, so when not half off it would have been about 100 dollars. But the 8oz bottles bought together are around 40 bucks.
So glad I’m on water-only for now. If it works out, I’ll only need to purchase conditioner maybe once a year, or probably even less, since I’d only need to use it on the ends. Hell, once my hair transitions, I might not even need to use the conditioner on my ends every shower! Hair care = way too expensive. Especially with the conditioner being more expensive for less product – I always use more conditioner than shampoo.
I basically worship every single product I have tried from Shu Uemura hair range. Nothing compares to them. Kerastase and so many others are history now!
Do buy the essence absolue serum, it is the best product in the world, all of my friends are believers too and love it!
Seems nice but the price stops me from purchasing it. I have used and loved some salon brands (Purology, Matrix, Joico, Federic Fekkai etc) but those are in the 20 dollar per bottle range.
i think shiseido tsubaki would be a dupe for this. i like it and its $20-30 for both.
That price tag is outrageous! Sulfates, dyes and fragrances… oh my! Somebody call Suze Orman and the EPA! lol
LOL! These products contain sulfates, which are damaging ingredients (they remove moisture and are bad for frizz control) that the curly haired community has learned to avoid. They’re not even far down on the ingredient list, either. Sodium Laureth – one of the harshest sulfates out there – is the SECOND ingredient. Are you kidding me, shu uemera? You couldn’t even be bothered to use a gentler sulfate for a shampoo that you’ve priced at $45?
BTW – NaturallyCurly.com has some great information on what sulfates do, what sulfates to avoid, and guides to all the sulfate free products out there.
The only shampoos/conditioners that don’t work for me have actually been sulfate-free ones – I’ve tried half a dozen and always end up disappointed! I’ll check out the site and see how they ranked the ones that were bombs for me – maybe I just tried ones that nobody likes.
Ha! That shows how product effectiveness varies among different hair types. I’d love to have hair like yours, but mine requires quite a bit of maintenance. I have naturally thick, curly hair, so sulfate free products have really made a difference for me. I’m loving SUDZZfx shampoo and conditioner right now – they smell so good!
Mine is definitely rather low maintenance, which I’m thankful for because I’m terrible at styling my hair (it’s just so thick and heavy, it never stays put!). I’m going to go look up SUDZZfx now!
Oh, my God, the bottles are gorgeous.
My hair is very thick and runs a bit dry, so it might be a good product. I’m wondering, if I were able to get a sample from my counter, whether or not I’d be able to see the effect after one or two uses.
I want the bottles to put on a shelf! They’re beautiful!
And I thought it was a big investment to jump from $4 Herbal Essences to $8 organic shampoos and conditioners, ha!
I swear by Shu hair products. Pricey? Yes. but, I go for a blow out once a week have Shu products used on me by my stylist and I have bought what she has used “just in case” I miss an appointment, which never has happened.
But I have tried everything through the years from drug store to high end and Shu is the best. Their hair oil is amazing too, have you tried that?
