Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Pencil Blending Brush

Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Pencil Blending Brush ($16.00) debuted in the past couple of months, and it is a very small, domed pencil brush designed to blend and feather products like Urban Decay’s Shadow Pencils. It is made out of PET (recycled plastic bottles), so the bristles are synthetic and vegan-friendly. The brush itself is small–around 6mm or so in length–and it can be used in the crease, smudging of colors (on the lash line or elsewhere).

I found the brush wasn’t tapered enough to be a really great crease brush but too dense to blend out colors with ease. The fluffiness was lacking, and so while it could deposit color well enough, it didn’t provide the soft, airy feel that seems to make blending nearly effortless. I also wish the tip itself was a little more tapered and had a touch more give.

Funny enough, I didn’t find it useful in softening the edges of the 24/7 Shadow Pencils much; it worked better with powder eyeshadows. I felt like the creaminess of the 24/7 Shadow Pencils got eaten up by the brush and the result was more of a smeared look, rather than something feathered at the edges.

final thoughts: I’ve liked Urban Decay’s new brushes, but this one was a bit of a miss for me. It was designed to blend out the 24/7 Shadow Pencils, which I felt is where it performed the worst, and it didn’t excel in the other ways I tried it either.

Christine,

Would another pencil brush be good for blending the 24/7 e/s pencils, or would you recommend another brush entirely?

Thanks!

I tried this brush a few weeks back, when I got my first 24/7 eye shadow pencils and it didn’t seem to do anything special at all. The shadows set REALLY QUICKLY so you do have to work fast. I was hoping there was something “magical” in the composition of this brush that would make the shadows blendable/smudgeable for a bit longer but it’s “just a brush” and really not much different from the Posh smokey eye brush which costs something like 5 bucks CDN.

They didn’t replace it with this. They replaced it with the Good Karma Shadow Brush, which is a bigger shadow brush, I don’t know all the other details about it.
I’d personally rather a brush than the duo-ended liner – I feel like you get more mileage with a brush, but to each their own. 🙂

I actually wish the palette had come with the shadow brush when I bought it for my mom. She doesn’t wear eyeliner, and never used any shadow that didn’t come with a sponge applicator, so I had to buy her a shadow brush ANYWAY to go with the palette. XD

You mean with the Naked palette? They didn’t replace the liners with this brush, they replaced it with their regular shadow brush (it’s similar to MAC’s 239, but not quite the same).

The product you speak of never existed outside the Naked palette. The brush that comes with the newer Naked palettes their regular eyeshadow brush. This is a completely different product. This is for their 24/7 Pencils. The eyeshadow brush is silver. This one is purple.

HAHA I was JUST looking at this on Sephora.com! I was considering it for my cream shadows and greasepaint sticks. I will pass on it now, thanks for the review

I have three Posh brushes (one larger, one smaller and one large and pointed) that blend eyeliner and that kind of stuff really well.

I was going to buy this to use with the shadow pencils I have ordered, but it was out of stock – looks like I had a lucky miss! Which brush/type of would you recommend for use with he shadow pencils?

I agree. It is good for depositing eye shadows in the outer corner, that’s about it. I found the dome to big so instead of blending and leaving a “smoke” it looked more like a wide line. Not good for blending, not good for precision either. Just stick with your 219 and something else for blending.
