Sneak Peek: Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoat Photos & Swatches

Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoat
Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoats

Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Lip Topcoat ($18.00 for 0.16 fl. oz.) is a new product launching later this month that is designed to work as a top coat or worn alone to create “special effects.” There are twelve shades, and I have eleven to share with you today. Be sure to click on the shade’s name to see it layered over a Vice Lipstick – every shade was shown alone as well as over a Vice Lipstick (different ones) to show the effect of layering. My suspicion is that these will work best layered, rather than alone. The brand warns that lips will “feel tingly” as the special effect “locks” in–my lips felt tingly for minutes when worn these alone but was less bothersome when layered.

God, I cannot believe how much time you spent on something that was not a full review! One incredible presentation and a brilliant idea. You really gave us a feel/idea of how these will work….and we can extrapolate to our own shades. Wow! The ‘lipstick’ colored toppers work very well by themselves, also as a layer. Lots aren’t as enticing alone, but they weren’t designed that way. Not exactly a new idea, but in this valley of sameness, what a standout. Have to admit Litter over Perversion is my fave. The green glitter overshadows the pink, on the black. Nice to see fun. Make up IS fun, but has been getting a tad repetitive recently.

Wow, most of these are beyond horrible! When I see stuff like this, I’m left wondering if the company (UD, in this case) did ANY testing at all on these or if they did, did they then just throw up their arms and say “What the heck…someone will be fool enough to buy them!”

I am really truly baffled by most products most companies come out with. When something is so blatantly crappy I just don’t get what they’re thinking and what irks me even more is that they get away with it. People will buy pretty much anything if the right youtuber sells it to them. Not to mention the insane speed with which collections are being released. Man… really. I love makeup but nowadays I so rarely want to buy anything.

White Lie is the only one that looks appealing. The sparkles are quite pretty. I’ve been looking for a holographic lip topper, but I’m not sure this is the one…. Is it pretty visible if you take a photo from arms length or something like that?

I totally agree with you Nancy. Most of them are very beautiful over top of lipsticks.Anyone that didn’t like them on bare lips click on the names and check them out over the Vice lipsticks combos Christine created they are awesome. I’m about to be broke also Nancy?.Thank You Christine for all the extra work you put into all your posts.

White Lie and 3rd Degree seem like the only two shades that would perform over a lip color. The others all look so patchy…. I wonder if the formula is liquid enough to use them by mixing with a lip color on a palette?

Really nice effects when layered. I have soooo many lipsticks and when I think what I can do with them and the topcoats. It will take years to try out different combinations.
But I am very excited to try them out. I think it will be better than gloss as topper.

I absolutely hate the blur filter that you used on the corner of the images. It made me put on my glasses. I thought something was wrong with my vision.

Christine Avatar

I don’t use blurring filters – that’s the result of the depth of field for how I shoot the photos to ensure that the right part (my lips!) are the most in focus compared to the rest of my face since I am sort of hovering in the air trying to make sure I get myself in the right placement. The lip portions seemed quite sharp to my eye – there are, always, of course, shots where I can’t get the focus to be quite as sharp as I can (like trying to get MAC Ruby Woo in focus takes like 50 shots!).

I don’t know what has been going on with UD. I tried their metallic liquid lipsticks on my hand at Sephora, and I noticed when they dried down, they separated and left behind glitter. The Bite Beauty Prismatic glosses look way better than their topcoats. UD topcoats look kinda thin with little pigment except the darker shades look better. I do like Ritual and Copycat.

The only ones that look remotely descent are 3rd degree over wildfire and seether over blackmail. I don’t think I like any of them by themselves

I was so looking forward to these and these swatches make me sad. Not worth it all. I know that these are billed as toppers but they are lacking color and substance. Glad I saw this before purchasing and am looking forward to reading your review.

These look so much better as a topper than they do over bare lips! I guess they could be worn over a nude lipstick for more of a “gloss only” look. Though, Seether actually looks quite nice on it’s own in the picture. I think White Lies is pretty as well. I’m glad to read these can be worn over Vice lipstick cream and matte formulas, and not just over liquid lipsticks. I’m a bit tired of seeing liquid lipsticks everywhere, and I feel like UD took away from the excitement of the Vice lipstick line by releasing their underwhelming liquid lipstick formula. These feel like Urban Decay to me (glitter and bold colors), and I hope they perform well.

Julia Avatar

Ehhhh… I’m not a big fan. The glitter particles are just so large they look speckly, especially the darker colors. I also think the applicator is not going to do anyone any favors, those skinny brushes are the worst! They always leave streaks. IMO doe foot is always the best choice for even application.

I have to say I don’t really understand the idea of these. I know metallic lips are the trend but I’d rather just buy a metallic lipstick then have to have two products to do the same job. It seems to me like UD knew they would have difficulty making an opaque glitter lipstick so they just marketed these as toppers? I love the new Bite prismatic pearl glosses but these just seem like they would make my lips dry and gritty. Obviously to each their own, glitter is fun for most! 🙂

I think some of these look stunning over the Vice Lipsticks.I really like how you layered Copycat that is my personal favorite so far.Bruja,Seether,White Lie,Fever, and 3rd Degree are ones im also interested in from your pictures of them topping the Vice lipstick.I also think Litter would look pretty over some of the more nude or pink shades from the Vice line.I would love to try each one over all my various Vice lipsticks that would be so much fun.I think it’s ok that the swatches on bare lips don’t look that great because these are supposed to top a lipstick I mean they are called lip top coat.I wonder if they go on top the Vice liquid lipsticks and look and wear good.

MoMerrell Avatar

I feel like makeup companies are not listening. These are just awful…..I get for an MUA to use; sure or a teen but an everyday person like myself would find no use and specially not these, they look really cheap for the brand and price.

NovaBeam Avatar

I don’t think people understand the point of this product. Though it says you can use them alone they work more as a lip topper. They sit on top of a lipstick and give it a metallic or glittery look. Swatched alone they look unremarkable but over a matte liquid lipstick they look quite different. I’ve see the colors over lipstick and some or them are really spectacular.

Christine Avatar

As I mentioned above in the post, you can click any shade to see it layered over a lipstick! 🙂 But technically, applying them over your natural lip color should still be showing them off as a lip topper – just using your lips as the base color! Since they say it’s something one can do, it should therefore work that way, IMO!

NovaBeam Avatar

I really wished they haven’t tryed to advertise them as a you can wear alone too type of product. While some do look like sparkly glosses some are just a mess by themselves. I just noticed that this is kind of lost in translation for some people. They’re not a bad product just one marketed improperly.
