Do you re-create looks from makeup tutorials you've seen?

Do you re-create looks from makeup tutorials you’ve seen? Or do you just watch for fun?

I usually just watch for fun if I can manage to sit still long enough to watch one!

I always try to recreate the looks that Sam and Nic from Pixiwoo do on their channel. I also love some of the looks on Tanyas (pixi2woo) channel they are my favorite Youtubers!! 🙂

If I see a tutorial on a look I love I might try to actually recreate that specific look. Most of the time I’m looking more at how different colors are being used together. Application. How someone is holding the brush and moving it on the skin. Negotiating the landscape of the face. How the shadows etc blend together. Most of the time I’m looking at a look I like and how I can adapt it to my own face & coloring as well as picking up tidbits on technique. I very much appreciate when the person shows the brush and identifies by type not number, avoids long irrelevant dialogue and refers to additional videos for anything that only needs to be explained once vs every video. Showing on the camera the entire brush at an angle where it’s visible how the brush is touching the skin and where. I was very surprised to find that Estee Lauder’s website has some really well-thought-out tutorials kind of buried in back. I always appreciate color descriptions and lists of dupes so I can recreate without buying an entire counter of products (esp with the thousands of MAC tutorials on youtube where if you don’t use MAC you may not find anything of use in a tutorial because the person just refers to brush numbers, shade names with no alts, etc., when I see MAC a few times I often look for a different tutorial because often they’re just hard to understand if you don’t speak MAC lol plus they end up feeling like a MAC infomercial & turns me off–but if it’s other brands like UD and MUFE and a mix, then I’ll usually pay attention & watch the whole thing)

I totally agree with you in so many points. I’d love if you colud recomend tutorials with such characteristics, who you like? I’m tierd of finding myself kida trapped into th same group.

heidi Avatar

Absolutely! Not always and I don’t unless I find it extremely attractive and I do my own take on it. I don’t go out and buy the products, I use what I have for the most part unless I really want that product

Definitely! Pixiwoo have taught me so much about Make up! Especially their icons videos which are great for vintage make up! I recreate and get inspiration all the time!

i do watch tutorials sometimes (i i like the person who does them), but generally i just get inspirations for color combinations and adopt this to my own technique for applying makeup. in rare cases i get inspirations for a new way of applying makeup (e.g. a certain brush for a certain product)

Piper Avatar

I will watch for fun or for a certain technique for the most part. sometimes however, I will do it with similar colors but not the exact shadows or products used.

There are a few rare times that I have recreated a look exactly as I saw it. If I really liked it, but like I said, very rarely.

OMG YESS like all the time……especially if its from the PIXIWOO channel, i just love those two sisters and cant resist the products they talk about, as well as the looks they do:D

Niki Avatar

Sometimes, but often I watch tutorials for inspiration regarding product placement, techniques or product recommendations for so than to copy a certain look.

Sunny Avatar

I actually do, and that’s why I stick to my guru who has the same type of eyes/skin tone! I might not necessarily use the same products, but I love to learn new technique that I might be able to use later.

i sometimes take bits and pieces from people’s method, but usually won’t recreate an entire look…but i’m the same christine, where i have a hard time sitting through a whole tutorial! i usually end up getting distracted by something else.

I have a few favourite people that I watch, and I get alot of makeup inspiration from them. I do recreate looks from tutorials, and sometimes put my own spin on it.

When I first started experimenting with makeup, I’d watch tutorials to learn techniques or get ideas – but there are very few tutorials for “daytime” or “work look” makeup, and that’s one of the reasons I started my own blog.

My *favorite* tutorials were Kandee Johnson’s – she was definitely my first “teacher”, but even her looks are generally designed for more costumey/dramatic looks.

I love watching makeup tutorials and trying to recreate their looks. I especially like Makeup Geek, It’s Judy Time, Stephbusta and LadyMakeup1.

Yes! All of the time…I believe they are there to instruct techniques and give new ideas, besides just showing off… I love doing the colorful yet wearable looks, and they always give me inspiration to work from!! One of my fave color combos was one you did over the summer with MAC to the beach, with sweet & punchy, firecracker and you had used mufe 92 in the crease, as well as teal liner…it was such a unique combo, but worked so well together…I get so many compliments on that color scheme! I do enjoy watching the videos of looks I can re-create and actually wear, more than redic editorial looks!

Always. I’m addicted to YT makeup gurus. Besides pixiwoo I love queenofblendingmua, makeupgeektv, xsparkage, and xteeener. Oh, can’t forget petrilude.

Hend Avatar

I love tutorials,
I don’t really re-create their looks, but ,
I learn techniques and learn about new shades and products
that I may add to my collection
Pixiwoo is my favorite channel for tutorials

Yvonne Avatar

Yes. Or at least some part if it, like copying the style with different colours. I’m not yet that great skilled with make up, and practicing the skill is the main reason I watch make-up gurus on you tube, I prefer product reviews and swatches via blogs

🙂

Sometimes, but the majority of the time I’ll change them up to make them work for my eye shape. And I know what colors will look good on me and which won’t, so I won’t bother trying some on me that I kno the colors would look bad.

jen Avatar

Yes! I usually watch for ideas and inspiration and just replace them with my own colors that are similar. Some favorite channels:

PIXIWOO
XSPARKAGE
MAKEUPGEEKTV
MAKEUPBYRENREN
MAKEUPBYTIFFANYD

I believe they are the best at what they do and the most tutorials on anything possible. Check them out!

Vanessa S Avatar

Not really re-create but if i see something i like i usually remeber it and when im thinking of something to do to myself i get inspried by it.

Isabela Avatar

of course, that’s why I watch them!! But i only re-create a tutorial when I really like it, when it suits my skintone/hair/eyes and when I have similar products.

Heather Avatar

The *only* reason I will watch a tutorial is to be able to recreate the look myself. Otherwise, I’m really not into youtube videos. Looking at other peoples’ looks is what gives me inspiration!

Natalie Avatar

I love tutorials! I usually just watch for tips/tricks or some inspiration, but a few I have recreated since I’ve had everything needed and they came out great. In fact I just did one last night for a huge event & it was lovely!

Lisa Avatar

totally. if i wanna rock a more dramatic look i’ll go by looks that Juicytuesday did, or Kandee Johnson (she has the most awesome brown smokey eyes tutorial, love it!) and if i need some inspiration for more wearable daytime looks, i’ll go by MakeUpByAlly.
what i do find though is that sometimes looks especially by kandee don’t look as awesome on me as they do on her 😀

TonTeezy Avatar

I watch makeup tutorials to learn application process which in turn I will recreate the “guru” look. However when I do my makeup to go out, I usually create my own look. I could never remember the colors used in the tutorials.

Nadia Avatar

I absolutely love to watch makeup tutorials! I watch Makeup by TiffanyD, Makeup Geek, and Emilynoel83’s tutorials because I love the looks that they create. I did recreate a look that TiffanyD did. Most of the time though, I use their tutorials as inspiration and then put my own spin on it with products I have.
