Guerlain d’Un Soupir (187) Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deep, dark brown with warm amber peeking through the base with silvery-white micro-shimmer. It has a very rich, satiny finish–not too frosty but certainly not lacking in dimension and some sparkle. Whether it is used wet or dry, it applies beautifully and intensely.
my thoughts on the formula: Guerlain’s eyeshadow texture is phenomenal in their singles–smooth, silky, very buttery. The color is true-to-pan and delivers rich results with little product needed. These eyeshadows are massive–over double the average single eyeshadow–and so by the ounce, Guerlain is as expensive (or as affordable) ($300/oz.) as MAC eyeshadows ($290/oz.).

final thoughts: This will make for a beautiful smoky brown for warmer complexions. It has noticeable red-brown leanings, but there is this shadow of taupe that seems to keep it from veering too red or orange. I think it will still work well for cooler skin tones as a result.

So it got an A? It’s a beautiful colour.. but just wondering what you think of the price? Is any single eyeshadow worth maybe 42, 43 dollars Canadian? Maybe there are a few dupes for it..
It has 0.12 oz. — that is double what you normally get for high-end! (Value is based on quantity/price for similar brands.)
Hm, even for double the amount of shadow I don’t think I could bring myself to pay that much! It is an incredibly beautiful colour though. I’m not one for neutrals, but this just evokes warmth. It makes me want to wrap up in a fur blanket beside a blazing fire with hound dogs at my feet as I drink hot cider and discuss popular political topics with my companions.

I don’t think any eye shadow is exactly “worth” $42 or so, but these are luxurious, high-end and genuinely good shadows with a pretty reasonable amount of product provided. Once I start paring down my makeup collection for work, I will probably end up investing in this kind of thing.

How does this compare to the dark brown shade (center stage?) from MAC peacocky collection? I am loving the color but I wonder if I can substitute it with a cheaper center stage and get the same color.
This is a little darker, less frosty!
this reminds me considerably of the chocolate shade in Duwop’s peacock palette.
Just curious Christine, how do Guerlain and Hourglass compare to thebalm in terms of the texture of the shadows and pigmentation?
I can’t really see justification for the price on 1 shadow, thebalm needs more shades but what they have is top notch same amount for 16 or 8 shades half the size for only $40. if you were a real brown shadow junkie who liked a minimal arsenal top quality vs quantity or it was the perfect shade & had unlimited beauty funds I could understand it.
I prefer Hourglass above all others! Hourglass is smoother and a little richer than theBalm. Guerlain’s texture is creamier and their colors often so nuanced that it’s that something extra that makes you go, “oooh!”
We all have different budgets/price points, and I’d pay $36 (which I did, since I purchased all three of Guerlain’s new singles) for a great color, but I totally understand others not feeling the same way or preferring something similar but half the price.
I totally understand everyone having different budgets and priorities. I don’t have a hard and fast rule, I tend to consider all things & balance depending on how much I love something, what else is available, if it’s a big difference and if it’s a product I really take seriously like foundation.
Definitely! 🙂 What I really about Guerlain’s single eyeshadows is they are well-thought out and most of them seem to have more depth than your average color!

You divide the dollar amount by the quantity (the oz.) and then you get the price per ounce, so you can really compare prices across brands!

Fabuleux…. Love this color… I’m surprise that it i’s 42* canadian. Here in France it is 26.95€ and it is pricey. But I love this color so much that I am planning to buy it.
I was expecting this to be gorgeous, but I don’t really care for it that much.
i just ordered this last night along with d’une ondee (the silver one)! but i had to order on saks cause that was the only place that had both the shadows. even nordstroms online said this shadow wasn’t located in stores within 100 miles of me. didn’t seem like a permanent shade to me!

40 dollars for some plain brown e/s. They have lost their minds.
“plain” is the absolute last word I’d used to describe this colour. Like others said before, the subtle nuances in the shade are what set shadows like these apart from shadows at lower price points!
I agree on it not looking plain. I do think it’s probably dupe-able for less in color if not texture. I have a super rich creamy chocolate shade in a Duwop palette that looks almost identical. But I took the comment as in brown vs a brighter shade where there was nothing remotely similar which would justify the price. I know plenty of readers go simply on quality and ignore costs but I think most beauty addicts want to maximize value so they have more money to try different things since most of us tend to max our spending limits anyway. We also all have different levels of guilt per dollar of makeup lol.
