What was the last "holy grail" product that lost its status with you?

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau (discontinued version), which I still love but find I prefer Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea over it. I still wear both (along with other foundations), though!

Urban Decay Primer Potion. I used to love it, but feel like the formula changed when they switched to the packaging with the doe foot applicator. I have noticed it now creases on me and I really hate the doe foot, it feels scratchy on my eyelids. I wish they would go back to the way it was

Aline Avatar

If you have Milani in your area, give that a try. I changed over for the same reason you did and the Milani is much better than the UDPP.

2 things immediately jumped to mind for me: MAC Pro Longwear Foundation, and whatever I’ve been using for my brows forever! My foundation because I need something less flat and lifeless looking, my brows just need some very serious SOS. They are on the sparser side with a mind of their own, going off in different directions, and because the hairs can get pretty long, I trim them. This has become more and more obvious to me lately. I may have to suck it up and get a tinted brow gel. Something I always said I wouldn’t do.

Fun question. I guess MUFE Full Cover concealer. I still consider it by far my best all purpose concealer, but I haven’t reached for it since I started using KA SSE for blemishes and NARS Creamy for undereyes. It’s like 85-90% as good as the other two at the function they each perform exceptionally well. If I was going on a trip, I would still bring Full Cover instead of my two step concealer routine.

Merle Norman,no SPF their aqua balance and MUFE with no SPF also. I found that as my skin changed I developed an idiosyncrasy to SPF and developed little bumps. Go figure.

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask – I tried Lanolips 101 (the pear flavour is divine!) and Lemonaid and I adore both. Less than half the price and easier to get too 🙂

NARS sheer glow foundation. My skin type changed and is now more oily. The foundation does not hold up any more with my new “Glow”. Same for the benefit porefessional primer. Still like them both, but I’m reaching for more mattifying products, now.

Mariella Avatar

Nars eyeshadow primer and Urban Decay Primer Potion as well. I still have both of these and they are still great products but since buying MAC 24 Hour Extend Eye Base, those other 2 products are no longer my HG’s. I still really like the Nars one but it always seems that there is very little product in the tube and it’s much pricier than the MAC one. MAC’s also leaves such a nice, silky finish so that eyeshadow applies very smoothly over it.

Joanna Avatar

Mariella,

Have you tried removing the stopper from the Nars primer? I have a deluxe size version, and got about 2 weeks use out of it. Then I removed the stopper, and I’ve been using it for over a month, and I’m guessing there’s at least a month’s worth left!

Mariella Avatar

Joanna, I still have plenty of product in the tube; it’s just that when I go to use it, it “seems” like there isn’t much product on the doe foot (but there is and you need so little of it in any case). But I do remove the stoppers on things like this when it seems they’re empty and there is always a tonne of product left inside.

If Sephora still has the Swoon tool, it’s a very handy gadget for getting out the last drops. If we really (US) throw away 40% of our food, I’d hate to see how much product we throw out.

I don’t really have HG products. I love a lot of products I’d be sad if they discontinued but I think there is always good things coming along I want to try to stick with any HG product.

Anne Avatar

The only items I can think of are my brushes and brush cleaner, not that my previous brushes were HG (well, maybe I thought they were when I bought them), but my new natural hair and synthetic brushes, and brush cleaner certainly are. The Beautyblender replaced my favorite foundation brush and became a HG. I thought the Beautyblender solid cleanser was a HG until I found Shea Moisture’s Organic African Black Soap (Target, $4.99 for 8oz bar, and lasts forever), and now it’s my HG.

Karen Johnston Avatar

Do you know if the Shea Moisture soap gets white bristle brushes as clean/white as the solid Beauty Blender? Have you tried any other Shea Moisture soaps besides the African Black type on brushes?
I dislike what Beauty Blender charges for their solid, for ALL of their products really, but after trying six or seven other brush soaps, I have come to the conclusion that it does seem to work the best as far as getting my white brushes clean and not leaving behind that weird crunchy stiffness. If I could find a better product I’d switch in a flash. 🙂

Anne Avatar

Yes; it gets white bristle brushes clean. I use it on my expensive white goat hair brushes and on synthetics. It goes on black (don’t let that scare you), breaks down things like foundation and sun screen. It then turns grey and rinses clear. Sometimes I have to do a second quick clean, but I don’t mind. It does the job. It’s all natural. It’s safe and will not harm your brushes. It breaks down the oily goop. It’s as cheap as cheap gets. And, it lasts forever. It’s much better than Beautyblender solid. Much, much better.

No, I’ve only used the black soap bar.

I’ve never experienced the white crunchiness. I dry my brushes upside down in brush guards (sold at Beautylish).

It’s $6, so try it. It’s Target, so if you keep your receipt, you can take it back if you don’t like it. I think you’ll like it. Buy one of those bigger sized plastic bar soap containers with lid to store it in. The bar is huge.

I trust this soap with all my very expensive Japanese brushes (goat and squirrel) and have had NO problem whatsoever. Let me know how it goes 🙂

By the way, I got the idea from YT’s Tarababyz. She recommended it. Her brush collection is killer, if you’re unfamiliar with her.

One tiny piece of advice: If you should have a large, very dense synthetic brush (M Jacobs, specifically) that is giving you trouble, rub a tiny bit of cleansing oil into it first, then use the bar. It will come out perfectly clean.

Anne Avatar

Coincidentally, Tarababyz just posted her new set of WG white goat hair brushes in her lastest instagram post. Here was someone commented, and her response:

dhilde85I hate white brushes because they stain so easily

tarababyz@dhilde85 none of mine are stained, might want to try a different soap, shea moisture african black soap is really good ?

Laura Mercier’s mineral powder foundation. It was the PERFECT pale yellow color for me and had amazing coverage for a powder. But then in my later 20s my skin changed and became drier and that powder just wouldn’t sit right or last on my skin like it used to. I still miss it 🙁

Sarah Avatar

Kat Von D’s Lock-It foundation for my own reasons. I mean, it’s a great foundation, it’s lightweight but full coverage without looking full coverage. But it fell from my good graces. Kat Von D’s Tattoo Eyeliner as well, I’ve yet to find a liquid eyeliner that comes even close. It was a serious HG, but not for me anymore.

AB Avatar

Nothing comes to mind. I’ve been dabbling in makeup and products so much over recent years I would have thought I’d have a contribution to make on this, but nope — those few that have HG status, that are core and are always just right on me, have not been displaced. A Chanel blush (Tempting Beige) I used for years was discontinued, but I don’t think that qualifies.

I would say Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. Bottle #1 was great. Bottle #2, what the heck happened? It would just break down so quickly. Won’t be using it again.

NARS tinted moisturizer in Alaska. Colour wise too yellow but with enough pink to make it respectable for a light olive gal.. problem: aging isn’t making this formula so friendly. It doesn’t look the same and doesn’t sit as well on me as a base. Up until recently, I loved to use this all over and then cover up my problem red areas with a bit of foundation. Now, It looks mask like and tends to pull product into fine lines. Sad.

I kinda ‘rethunk’my response today as I was putting on my makeup and using one of the new Tom Ford Blushes and I found myself getting so angry he screwed with such an amazing formula. I had to use powder to help me diffuse. I used a freaking Wayne Goss Air Brush which is phenomenal for applying a super subtle cheek, to apply the blush. This NEVER would have happened with the old formula, I could use any old brush and it would apply effortlessly.

Giorgio Armani corrective concealer (the salmon colored one). One I discovered the Prolong Wear liquid concealer from MAC, I never went back. It corrects and covers at the same time for me.

UDPP. I tried the Milani one because I felt the PP formula had changed or just wasn’t working for me anymore. It’s $8 and does a fantastic job. It’s a little stickier than the PP and my shadows last longer.

CoverGirl Lash Blast in the orange tube. I developed an allergy to it which was such a disappointment for me because it did it all.

MAC Lightful C tinted cream. I still love it, but I think I reach for the Laura Mercier illuminating tinted moisturizer and Nars tinted moisturizer more now. Also the Benefit They’re Real Mascara used to be my HG but has been replaced by Rodial Glamolash XXL (my new HG!)

I am still amazed Rainforest of the Sea dethroned Lingerie de Peau for you! Rainforest accentuated every flake and hair on my face, whereas Lingerie still gives me a skin-like finish. But I guess everyone has different needs!

MAC Studio Waterweight has been taken down a notch for me, because dryness was rampant this winter and it did nothing to hide it on my face. Probably a better summer foundation, but going to switch things up with Josie Maran’s Vibrancy foundation and It Cosmetics CC+ your skin but better and see how it goes.

O used to love my Bare Minerals powder foundation. Sadly, I feel like it settles in my lines a little bit now even though I have very oily skin. I remember buying this and being amazed by it (I was in my early twenties then) and telling everyone how great it was lol. ? The powder was also a hassle to carry around though with the brush for touch ups. After wandering the makeup aisles, I’ve finally switched to something just as exciting for me now, it’s Laneige’s BB Cushion (in the light color I’m NC20 with more neutral undertones I think) for my light, easygoing foundation days and I love it. Easy to use and carry around, has SPF 50 I believe, and the compact is super well made too. When you buy it it comes with a refill inside which is nice and not very expensive! BTW, it would be awesome for you to review some of these new BB creams! ?

Maybelline Fit Me concealer (I used the shade Sand!)

It used to be my PERFECT under eye concealer. It was super yellow, and it blended out easily, and lasted all day.

But now that i’v used new concealers, i’m realizing just how little coverage the Fit Me has. And how it faded and creased on my dehydration lines under my eyes!

I’m glad i’v moved on and found two concealers that work very well under my dry under eyes!

La Mer translucent loose powder. When they reformulated and repackaged selling about 1/5 of the product as we used to get for twice as much $$ AND it didn’t work as well, I gave up. I have not found a replacement for the old La Mer loose powder – there was and is nothing like it.

Currently using Boots No. 7 translucent loose powder. It’s not the same, but it’s MUCH less $$ and it works pretty good on my skin, however the hunt continues ….

That is such a great tip! I’ll be turning 54 this April and been thinking to switch everything cream blush and eyeshadow just ordered a few Colourpops eyeshadows going on sale no shipping fees presently. Ordered a few light peach and beautiful pinkish nudes tones can’t wait to receive them first time trying Coloupops. Thanks for the tip Bon Bon greatly appreciated! I’m also wondering from leaving BB creams although in a rush they do work and having spf is a plus always but moving on to lighter minimal foundations almost a tint. Anybody recommends some? I have pretty much clear, fair skin. .

Bon Bon Avatar

Thank you. If you haven’t tried a setting spray before and/or after your makeup application it will definitely hold your makeup in place. I didn’t have luck with it tho with cream blush. I also recommend monistat chafing gel for your face primer. I setting spray, moisturizer, primer, make up then setting spray. My makeup doesn’t move or separate. Good luck to you, and I’m 58. Have a great day.

I used Benefit’s Dr Feelgood as a primer back as early as 2000. Nobody really had primers and I still think it doesn’t use that word, per se. Too many at primers now.

I think that when we ‘mature’ our skin, colour preferences and shade finishes change, so that products that were once really loved no longer work or fit the bill.
I would have to say the Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation – it was the first to really work on me because of its pink undertones, but it just doesn’t have the staying power to last all day on me. I still like it and am using up the bottle I have, but it’s not my go to foundation anymore.

I loved the Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid line; I used the moisture toner, serum, emulsion and cream. However, I was disappointed by the cream, but I loved the rest of the line, it made my skin feel so plumped, hydrated and soft. When I went back to Japan this year, I discovered Hada Labo has a new ‘Super Hyaluronic Acid’ line in gold packaging, which consists of a moisture toner, all in one gel/serum and emulsion so I tried all of those and they have knocked the regular Hyaluronic Acid line out of the park! I didn’t think my skin could get any better but it has! It just feels so SO silky smooth, plumped and hydrated with no irritation whatsoever. The regular line didn’t cause me irritation but if I used the wrong brand of face wipes or cleanser, my skin would sometimes sting at night, but I don’t get that at all with the Super Hyaluronic Acid line, so I feel like it has improved/strengthened my skin barrier. The new line is called Hada Labo Koi Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid line.

Urban Decay Naked loose powder. It was the first good non-drugstore powder I used, but I knew it was destined to be replaced as I eventually got more adventurous and started checking out alternatives … and that’s exactly what happened.
