I tried this out last year after seeing all the awesome stuff everyone got the year before, and got a big disappointment. I think in previous years, they put nice bags together with stuff that was actually limited edition, or cool items from their shop, but last year a big population of the people (myself included) got a package that was basically stuff that couldn’t sell. I was so disappointed, so never again.

I split this with a friend two years ago and was disappointed as well. There were lots of talk like big name vloggers got better bags etc. Maybe it’s my fault for wanting more than I paid for. Lol but yeah I decided never again as well.

Appreciate your honesty @Sheila! I was about to splurge (only recently joined Beautylish so this was my first encounter with the idea, which is cute) but your comment made me think the better of it. I work hard for the money, lol, so to get stuff that might be the odd colors they couldn’t sell in 2016 is too risky for me. Better to spend the money where I know I’m getting things I like and will work for me.

Kevyn Aucoin Bronzer, Natasha Denona 5 pan shadows, Wayne Goss brushes, It Cosmetics Powders, Brow Pencil and Mascara, Kevyn A. Brushes, Charlotte T. Film star Bronze and Glow, Rock n Khol, RMS eyeshadow (cream)& lip balm, Becca the One brush, Becca Backlit Primer, Becca Matte Primer, Becca Eyeshadows, that’s what I know of and saw from 2016’s boxes plus gift cards of $20.00.

That’s a shame, a good deal of the regulars on the Beautylish boards were thrilled with their boxes from last year and were opting for the XL’s. I’ve never bought any sort of “box” so it will be fun for me regardless, and I can always gift what I can’t or won’t use! I just hope it’s not Jeffree Star blue lippee, and his black highlighter, I’m way too old for it, and I don’t know anyone cool enough for that look!

This was my experience last year as well! I’m giving them another chance this year. But if it’s just as disappointing, I’ll decide against in the future

I bought this bag 2 years ago and it was entirely not worth it. If you’ve got the spare cash and you’re a collector go for it. Because it can be fun; however, when I bought the bag it was all stuff they were trying to get rid of. Toner, glitter, an RCMA concealer pallete (the only valuable/item that was geared to make up artists considering that was the bag I bought), and a Wayne Goss lip brush. If you’re particular about your make up save up and buy something you really want. If you’re not too invested in the outcome and you just like a fun promotion I’d say go for it.

I decided to chance it this year. They also had a Lucky Bag XL for $150 but I went with the smaller one. I’m always afraid with subscription or surprise type things I’m going to end up with something I already have. I agree with Lupe’s comment – I wish shipping had been free. The reason I was given was that they could add more value to each bag. IDK – I guess the bag reveal will tell that. Also not thrilled they don’t even start shipping right away. AND depending on where you read it, it either says shipping will occur between 1/4-1/6 OR that all bags will be shipped by 1/6. Since they are charging a flat rate shipping, there was also no way to upgrade to express – meaning, all bags ship ground. For me, being on the opposite coast, that means I most likely won’t have my bag until mid January. Fingers crossed!

i ordered my bag but it was quite the hassle! i signed up for early access with an email address that was not registered with my beautylish account (i sign into beautylish via google but signed up for the back with my preferred personal email)… apparently that made it so that i didn’t get my early access link (not sure why since the link should go to the email address ENTERED in the early access request… anyways… lol). i had to literally stalk the customer service via phone & chat for them to send me a new sign up link 30 minutes later. got the bag so cannot complain. Per social media I seem not to be the only one who did not receive their early access link.

I was tempted but then heard about the XL bags for $150 (I was not going to plunk that amount down for unknowns) and I thought that it was possible the more expensive bags would have the best items so decided to skip it. I may be wrong about this but figured I could wait a year and see what effect the larger bags have on the smaller bags quality. It will be interesting….

I just ordered one, I’m pretty excited! I love Beautylish, even though I’m in Canada, I order most of my makeup from them now. I will probably not even be Rouge or VIB at Sephora, I’ve moved all my dollars to Beautylish and a few other US retailers, Shoppers Drug Mart’s Beautyboutique in Canada.

Zoe Avatar

Oh wow.
This is a major trend in Asia for boutique clothing brands. It’s cool to see it applies to makeup!
Though I wonder how good a deal this would be for people with darker complexions?

I have never bought one of these ‘surprise’ bags or a subscription box from a beauty retailer, and after reading some of the comments above, I am never going to either. I am too particular about the shades of eyeshadow and lipstick that I use and most of the skincare products would not be suitable for me either.
But it is an absolute shame that customers are forking out huge sums of money plus shipping for a surprise bag that does not live up to its hype and expectations.
For those who have ordered one, I hope this year will be different for your sake.

kjh Avatar

Exactly. I don’t consider myself particular, but restrictive. Not into coral or pink, or most brown shadow. You get enough of that in palettes. Plus, being allergic to very common ingredients, I know any subscription or mystery bag would be one big give away. However, I am looking forward to using my 2 20s from xmas. That’s a fab promo. Overall, ‘lish is a very satisfactory experience.

Followed the link and got all the way to “Place Order”, before getting cold feet. I think I’ll save my $82 and put it toward any absolute must haves I see in other people’s bags.

I was very tempted to buy one but I would rather spend my money on things i really want and know that i have researched on. Hearing about stories from all of my Aunts living in Japan for atleast the last 20 or so years and my sister backpacking through Japan I could honestly say that their culture is better than ours and taking a Japanese tradition with a US retailer is not all that convincing to me. Also, lets not forget the fact that Beautylish is the one of the few beauty retailers that has never given its customers any good “discounts” or any good samples with purchase. Although, that has not stopped me from buying from them..maybe, once or twice..
yeah yeah, sure I know that their shipping is good and I have heard that they have good customer support…still.

But, then again it may be good..but I would rather buy something from them that I REALLY WANT.

To all the ladies that have taken the chance and purchased it, I wish you all luck and I hope you all get things that you will actually use! 🙂 I AM looking forward to seeing these bags, but I really do work too hard for my money. Im looking forward to them proving me wrong.

Mel Avatar

Very interesting that the bag (original $75 one) is still available 5 hours after the public launch! Last year (and the year before) it sold out within minutes….

Missy Avatar

Did this last year and was very disappointed. It seemed like the YouTube gurus got great bags (coincidence)? And I thought they weren’t so random after all. The most expensive thing in my bag was a TooFaced shadow palette which is like $36 & I already had it. Yawn. I didn’t get any Tilbury, Denona, Viseart or any of the other shadow palettes I wanted. I should say though I am all about shadow, highlighters and lippies. Brow, liner, cleanser, mascara & primers have no thrill for me at all so getting all that in the bag was of no interest to me. It’s like $83 when all is said and done and I’d much rather buy a lippie or shadow palette I want for that than get all those other products that generally were included. That’s just me. But maybe if folks spend a lot at Beautylish all year, they’ll get better bags. I don’t know.

I was so excited to order my first Lucky Bag this year, but I decided against it when a Redditor mentioned that Beautylist had confirmed that some bags would contain the Jeffree Star palette. I don’t purchase his products, so this was a hard pass for me. From the sounds of it, the quality on these has really gone down, too. 🙁

Jenny Avatar

After reading the mixed comments last year I bought this still hoping for the best. I also emailed customer service beforehand to ask them if Youtubers got better bags and here is her response.

“Lucky Bags are assorted at random (truly random–they are first boxed up and then shipping labels are attached to the unmarked boxes). Everyone has an equal chance for products!”

This made me feel better so I bought it. I also thought it was weird that the bags were still available 5 hours later but I think this is because of the preorder link mishap issues they had because the bags were definitely gone by the next day.
