2010 Blogging Scholarship - Voting Ends 11/5 at Noon PST!

Finalist for the 2010 Blogging Scholarship

Hey everyone!  I was the first runner-up in the contest, and I just wanted to thank you for all of the support!   The voting closes tomorrow (Friday) at noon PST.

Background: A couple of weeks ago, I submitted an essay (no more than 300 words–do you KNOW how hard it was to stay within that word count?!) towards the 2010 Blogging Scholarship, which recognizes students who blog. The first place winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship to help pay for school (I am a JD/MBA candidate, graduating in May!). I would love it if you would consider voting for me as I am one of ten finalists (I am Christine Mielke!). It would be incredible to show the Power of Temptalia! 🙂 Voting ends November 5th at noon PST!

Though I said it earlier in my last Tartan Tale review video, I really do feel like a winner no matter the outcome of the scholarship. I have the support of so many amazing readers and viewers, and I will still have it tomorrow and the next day. You are why I blog, you are why I strive to do better each day. It’s cliche, corny, and cheesy, undoubtedly, but it’s how I feel. I’m a sap, and you’ve all really made the week for me, because I know you’re here with me. Thank you!! Every time I think about how much support you have all shown me, I get teary eyed and if I’m not careful, I’ll start sobbing!

P.S. — Please be respectful of other finalists — everybody brings something to the table! 🙂

Go Christine!!!!!!! I really hope you win!!!! I have been telling all my friends and running around my house voting on all the laptops and computers 🙂 I’m SO happy xsparkage posted that video!!
you deserve this WAY more than christie wilcox (i’ve studied science too) but you put way more effort and love into your blog 🙂

Emilie Avatar

It votes based on IP addresses, so if you have more than one computer/laptop in your house (i.e. every member of your family has a laptop/computer) you can vote on each of those! 🙂 😉

Karen Avatar

personallyt i think you are a winner no matter which place you come in, your blog is soo amazing and you have so many dedicated followers how could you be anything but fabulous

Sarah Avatar

Christine, I love and respect you as a blogger. But as a scienceblogs reader as well, I’m using this comment to ask your readers – LADIES, you’re classier than this. Please stop leaving nasty comments on Christie Wilcox’s page.

I do not know her personally, but my reason for this comment is simple. I feel that the rude and uninformed comments left by some of the ladies in defense of Christine really do make the rest of us Temptalia followers look bad. Perhaps take the time to actually read through her blog post and understand the point she’s trying to make.

Anyway, best of luck to the both of you! 🙂

Sincerely,
a make-up obsessed scientist.

Chandra Avatar

I agree. I also agree that I don’t think it’s really the blogger herself that is offending but more her readers.I was offended by a few of the comments but like my Mom always says two wrongs don’t make a right.

Tiffany Avatar

I haven’t looked at the comments on the science blog, but that’s sad that people are resorting to that.

Christine, you have almost 70,000 votes! Even if you place 2nd, you should feel overwhelmed with how many people support you!

Jean Avatar

Hmm, I think both sides have been rather nasty and uncivilized. The readers over there have not come over here to comment, but they did put down the blog, Christine, makeup etc as generally ridiculous. Then Temptalia readers also responded in a heated, sometimes insulting manner. So I would have to say it’s just the internet mob mentality, as well as the comfort of being able to say whatever you want without having to look someone in the face.

Babycakes Avatar

I voted for you Christine Mielke. I almost voted for the wrong person. I get the impression the other person might have gotten some of your votes. You both have similar names. I went to her blog and it doesn’t appear she gets the same traffic as yours site. We can still do it and put Christine ahead. Go Vote!!

K7P* Avatar

That’s exactly what i was thinking!!! I almost voted for the other person too until i scrolled down and saw Christine. =( Sucks if those votes we’re really meant for Christine.

Rengirl Avatar

I highly doubt it’s a mistake. When I voted for Temptalia early on, I noticed that she was well in the lead (over 60%). The other girl got a huge surge of votes immediately after a very popular science blog plugged the contest and gave her his official endorsement (not unlike how other popular bloggers endorsed Temptalia).

Everything appears fair and square – as a previous commentor said, let’s keep this community classy and leave out the cat fighting.

Stellar4217 Avatar

Good luck! I rallied all the voting troops that I could to vote for you. My mom had everyone at her job vote for you. So just know you had the entire transit department in the city of Montebello vote for you, haha!

Kim Avatar

Good luck christine!! I of course voted for you. I even had my husband vote for you at his work computer. I wish you the best of luck you deserve it for all you hard work!

jacinta Avatar

I really do hope that you win this! you have helped me alot with learning about makeup and it has made me a more confident person because when you feel good about yourself on the outside, it helps the true person inside shine

SammyWhammy Avatar

I really hope you win! I sometimes wonder how you get everything done. It’s like a full time job, yet you’re in grad school. it’s crazy! lol
good luck!

Sam Avatar

I voted for you and tried to rally as much support as I could! I appreciate all that you do for us Christine, you’re truly a good person, you deserve this so much.

Liliane Avatar

Actually I didn’t know Christie Wilcox’s blog – and it sure looks interesting but I don’t see why you would need a scholarship for summarizing what’s already out there. Your make-up blog is far more demanding and useful, because where else can I find the information you are providing? Well, not in books or magazines anyway, your blog is just always up-to-date and I love that.

So I hope you make it! (At least I voted for you 😉

Emma Avatar

I voted for you! Hope you win – uni is so expensive, and you put so many hours into your blog. It must be tough to juggle both (let alone work!) so I really do hope you win.

Diana B Avatar

I just voted for you, I hope you win. You are amazing and so dedicated to your blogging. I really appreciate all the hard work you put into it. Thank you!!

From the Blogging Scholarship page:
“We believe passion is important. As the world gets more competitive, those who are passionate about what they do, and work close to their passions, will be able to become and stay successful even as technology and automation eat away at many business models. Those who are willing to share their experiences with the world help make the world a better place, even if most bloggers only consider blogging a hobby. ”

I hope people vote for the reasons this scholarship was conceived, not on the merit of which is more worthy, Make-up or Science. This is not a competition to judge the subject matter, but the passion and devotion a student gives to blogging.

Good luck Christine. Whether you win this or not, you are the winner in my eyes.
This from a Biochemistry undergrad and Molecular Biology grad degree holder.

Pamela Avatar

i voted for you right away and you were in the lead! i hope people didn’t get confused and pick the wrong christine 🙁 i’ve seen quite a few blogs link back to this and the writers are asking readers to vote for you 🙂

mkdallas Avatar

Best of luck, Christine; you really do deserve to win! I voted the other day (tried to do so again this AM but realized you only get 1 chance) and really hope you take 1st place.

margot Avatar

I voted for you Christine 🙂
I think you do a tremendous job on this blog and sincerely hope you win. But even if you don’t, you should be very proud of yourself, you are in second place with 39% of the votes !! That’s pretty spectacular 🙂

Melissa Avatar

I just wanted to say that i am new to your site and checking your blog has now become part of my morning routine. i’m glad i can show my appreciation, just got done voting. good luck.

Ellie Avatar

Christine, there is no other blogger who deserves to win more than you. The time you spend on this blog to help everyone and anyone is so incredible and well-appreciated by a Temptalia reader such as myself. You will always be a winner to me, because there is no other blog that can even compare to Temptalia. I check this site about ten times a day, have it on my Favorites tab on my phone, laptop, and computer. I pass this blog on to my friends ALL the time, because no other site can get better than this. I don’t think I’ve ever said a simple thank you for your hard work and the dedication you put into this wonderfully and incredibly helpful blog! Thank you SO much Christine!!<3

Elisa Avatar

I voted for you despite being a science nerd. =) You put a lot of hard work and love into your blog and it obviously shows from all your supporters and page hits.

Tina Avatar

Good luck, Christine. I voted for you and I wish you the best. I’ve just started getting into makeup and I absolutely love this blog. I’ve seen so many things i’ve liked on here and then have gone out to the store and bought them! My makeup collection has definitely grown.

Abril Avatar

I hope some of us didn’t vote for the wrong Christine! I didn’t read the list I just saw the name Christine and was about to vote for her but I remembered your last name haha

Jean Avatar

I voted for you! I visited your competition’s website to see it was about and the latest blog reads,

“I couldn’t help but be intrigued that my stiffest competition for winning the $10,000 Blogging Scholarship is a MAKEUP BLOGGER (emphasis mine.) What is it about cosmetics that is so appealing? Why do people wear makeup, and what might have caused early man to play around with blush and lipstick? Well, like everything else in life, a lot can be explained by science.”

I lol’ed at that!I hope she isn’t being condescending to us makeup lovers… at any rate good luck!! I love your blog!!

baby in a corner Avatar

hey i voted the last time you put up a post. It saddens me though that people put up comments to say that beauty blogs are for are superficial vain and anti women. I’m the most feminist person I know! Also like most Temptalia readers I feel I’m intelligent and well educated. I like the creativity of make up and the sense of escapism – must like reading a book or watching a movie.

Rosanna Avatar

Maybe I’m just a sore loser but I really think people accidently voted “Christie” when it was supposed to be “Christine.” I have a hard time believing there are more people reading a science blog than a beauty blog (beauty has a wider demographic, the average 12 year old doesn’t want to look at a science blog).

Mor Avatar

Awr :(! I was so sure you’re going to win. I was expecting your glorious winning post, and the way it looked back when I voted- I’m so surprised you’re only the runner up. However, I still think it’s incredible to have over 90,000 people who love and support you and your work. If nothing else, you can at least feel beloved and appreciated, which has a high value of its own :). I mean, most of us are lucky to have the love and support of a select few- You have 90,000 behind you! XD

As for the winning blog and ugly affairs I’ve heard about- I love science, and although I never visited the winning blog it does sound like a useful and important subject. I’m glad to hear such blogs exist, and I’m sure many people benefit and learn from them. It sounds like a worthy winner.
BUT I love makeup as well (I never read the nasty comments there, but I think it’s silly to think you can’t be both intelligent and care about your appearance. Gotta pamper both the inside and the outside ;), and I think your blog is just as important in its own way. It might be a more “superficial” way than a science blog, but for me it’s a knowledge just as important as science. It helps us feel god about ourselves, carry ourselves with greater self confidence, experiment, and get creative with another means of self expression. Your blog has sparked a renewed interest in makeup for me, and reminded me how passionate I used and could be about it. You’ve helped me more than anyone and anything to discover a huge range of products, and the greatest thing? Until I found Temptalia I wasted hundreds (if not *thousands*) of dollars on beauty products which ended up in my “perhaps some hallween…” drawer. I found myself disappointed with my online beauty purchases time after time, until I pretty much gave up. Since I started reading your blog- almost every buy is a success! You’ve saved me lots of money and grief, and if that’s not “important”- I don’t know what is.

P.S.- Sorry this turned out to be this huge vent, but I figured that instead of flaming the people over at the science blog for belittling makeup or Temptalia, it’d be more positive and productive to let it all out here, so you can at least see it. I’d rather say it all to you and hope you enjoy it, rather than flame some strangers who obviously don’t share anything in common with me or my views. And if any of the loyal Temptalia readers who bothered to flame the winning blog (and obviously meant well, although it probably ended up doing more harm than good) happen to read this, for some reason- instead of wasting your words on people you shouldn’t even care about– bring your great support for Christine over here, where it can be enjoyed and appreciated. Much better karma! <3

Christine Avatar

Hey Mor,

Thank you so much for commenting! We can definitely be strong, intelligent people who still love and appreciate makeup, regardless of why. As far as I knew, the scholarship was awarded because of the student’s passion for blogging–not what topic is more useful, “better,” or what have you. And I, like you, think that there is nothing wrong (and there IS use) out of makeup blogs – we all have our interests, hobbies, passions – and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to learn more or get immersed in it!

I’m so glad I have been able to help you save some money 🙂

Thank you, Mor!

crystal Avatar

I’m sure this goes without saying but I definitely appreciate all the time, energy, and Passion you put in your blog. I scanned some of the comments on the voting site and it just seems unfortunate to group the people that do read or write beauty blogs as superficial. I’m not supporting any of the comments that were said. I’m sure your readers were just as hurt as I was to see that beauty blog fanatics are looked upon of having no substance. But congratulations on your runner up win, you definitely deserved it.

Liz Avatar

I voted for you on every computer in the house. Even thgh you didn’t win, you should know that you have my support and many others who are willing to cheer you on everything you do. ou put sooo much time, love, and effort in doing this blog and I thank you for all you’ve done. Without you I would be lost in this giant beauty arcade !!!!!!

LorraineER Avatar

You got my vote and I’m sorry that you didn’t win. You and your blog make me really happy. I really enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your reviews. I use your swatches to make decisions on what I want to buy. I think you totally rock and I’m glad that we got the chance to do something for you for a change and if any of us could do more I know we would!

Stuart Avatar

Hi,

Just wanted to say that I voted for Christie Wilcox, but If I had a second vote it would go to you.
You seem a jolly decent person.
All the best, Stuart

i was ready to submit my vote but i am too late. deadline was at noon and it is now midnight! if it means anything, you’ve definately got my vote!

Petra Avatar

Aw, I’m sorry you didn’t win, but it’s still pretty cool how many of us voted for you. Nothing compared to all your hard work though… Hope You get a similar opportunity soon, Christine!

resham Avatar

Congratulations!! For me you are the winner anyways…You are so good at your craft (Blogging) and with this dedication, I am sure you are good at every work you do. Many more Scholarships will come by…and I know you will win the best one…SOOOON!!!

Julia Avatar

Hi Christine,

I voted for you yesterday and really do believe that you deserved to win! I follow many blogs and have never seen a blogger as committed as you are. Many bloggers will update their blogs a couple of times a week, yet you update yours multiple times a DAY. That is truly amazing. And, the fact that you are a student of a combined JD/MBA program makes your dedication even more admirable.

Keep doing what you do because I know that I’m just one of countless individuals who, each day, looks forward to reading your blog.

You may have not won this award, but there is no doubt in my mind that countless successes await you in the future.

I would have voted for you a dozen times if I could have! I have to admit I am disappointed that my girl didn’t win but You definitely are a Winner in life Christine and that’s the most important thing in the long run. One of the good things that will come out of this contest is that some of the people who didn’t know about you before would have found out all about you and your wonderful blog …. I have a feeling some other good things will come out of this broader exposure on the internet. <3
