What's the most over hyped beauty product?

What’s the most over hyped beauty product? Did you love it/hate it?

DiorShow and NARS Orgasm — I like NARS Orgasm, but it wasn’t OMGWOW! DiorShow flakes on me, but I have liked some of the variations on it.

I agree with you about Dior Show. I bought into the hype but got fed up with the flaking and how quickly the tubes dried up.
I do love NARS Orgasm though. It suites my skin tone.
Great question!

cathy Avatar

YES! I totally agree with you about Nars Orgasm. I actually didn’t like it very much at all, and I know all the hype is completely caused by the “risky” name of the product. I still haven’t tried DiorShow but I’ve heard it’s flaky as well..

Eyeris Avatar

I agree with the Nars Orgasm…not the most flattering shade in the world. I tried it at sephora nad it looks too frosty ( I like Mac Springsheen or Peachykeen way better. Another over hyped items were is the sugarbomb by Benefit. I love me some coral blushes and although it looks bute in the box it is nothing special when applied….Okay last one is the UD naked pallette. I was going to cave in and buy it but then i saw it in person ans its just neutral nothing to WOOOOW about it…..

Amanda H. Avatar

I’d coveted DiorShow Blackout since I spotted it on a friend and asked “WHAT ARE YOU WEARING on your lashes???” I finally broke down and ordered a couple of tubes (one went to my mom) online for $20 — a deeply discounted price! I adore it; I was totally converted!

I have naturally long and thick lashes, and many mascaras don’t seem to define them the way I’d prefer, but DiorShow delivered for me! I have to admit, though, it was a much less guilt-laden love because of how cheap I scored it for! 😉

I’ve heard phenomenal things about NARS Orgasm, but have only tried it on once in Sephora. I did love it on (it gave my very pale skin a very natural-looking flush), but they were sold out! I’m still in the market for a new blush, needless to say. 😛

Rosanna Avatar

MUFE HD Foundation. It wasn’t amazing on me.

First the bad, this is not for dry skin. It accentuated all my dry flakes that I couldn’t usually see with no make up on. I had moisturizer underneath too.The application got better when I exfoliated before hand but only a little. It also settled into my pores and blackheads. Which means it needs a primer!

The Good, huge colour selection. A perfect match in 120. Photographs really well. The coverage is around medium, definitely not full (I’ve got hyper pigmentation and some acne).
This foundation was just average for me.

Francesca Avatar

lol MUFE HD must have some HUUUUUUUGE issues cause I have oily skin and it accentuated the oiliness like crazy and I constantly had to use either blotting papers or a heavily matifying powder!

Diane Avatar

YSL Touch Eclat (hope I spelled it right). Also guerlain’s meterorites seems a little overhyped. Nara Orgasm is OK, but slightly too glittery for me. I actually like DiorShow but it’s not a must have– I think a lit of $5 drugstore mascaras are just as good.

ak Avatar

Really? I love Touche Eclat under make up of course. When you put foundation OVER the Touche Eclat it really does hide all the dark spots and circles very well.

Jillian Avatar

yes yes yes! i expected so much out of mufe hd, since people SAY it is for all skin types. ever notice the ones who say that have oily/combo or normal skin? yeah… flaketastic for us dry skin gals!

Sheila Avatar

I would like to say Urban Decay’s Alice in Wonderland palette. But then again, its just temporary hype and not long-term like Diorshow. I guess I would have to say Guerlain Meteorites. It absolutely did nothing for me apart from be shimmery, which I can achieve with just any plain highlighter.

kali Avatar

LOL Christine!! The page was loading so all I could see was the question, “What’s the most over hyped beauty product?” and I immediately thought NARS Orgasm! Then I scrolled down and say that was your answer!

I don’t understand the fuss over it although it’s a pretty shade (but still nothing to go crazy about.) I’m on the same side about DiorShow too -it doesn’t work for me (especially at that price.)

Also, most the products from MAC collections are way over hyped. They’re so extremely over hyped that people are willing to pay $100s on Ebay for something that only cost $30 or less.

Ms. Pink Avatar

Nars Orgasm wears off quick. Some of Nars eyeshadows are too powder and not enough color. Got to wet them for impact. Love Dior Masacara, the best! Gives me dramatic lashes and never flakes on me.

Thai Avatar

the nars multiples. i love nars to death (and i’m a huge fan of their blushes) but iono, the multiple just didn’t work for me. they feel good on my fingers and stuff but it just didn’t translate to my face. lol oh well

Mita Avatar

My mom’s friend tried ABEILLE ROYALE by Guerlain and was absolutely disappointed. Well that prevented me from spending a fortune cause I was going to give it to my mom as a Xmas present:)

Lulle Avatar

I agree about Nars Orgasm : it barely shows up on my NW20 skin…

Chanel Allure lipstick : been there, not impressed.

Bobbi Brown concealer kit : it does a good job covering mysery, but it is very thick, sets into the fine lines and doesn’t stay on very well.

In general I don’t jump on new launches everybody’s fighting for : too much disappointment in the past! I wait until people actually start saying how the quality is.

Connie Avatar

Okay, I am going to just have to say it the shu umera eyelash curler. Sorry but I just don’t get it and this was really staring at that curler compared to a much cheaper curler that looked idential and from what I could see, did the same thing.

Ellie Balfe Avatar

Without a doubt it’s YSL Touche Eclat! No coverage to actually conceal shadows yet everyone buys it as an undereye concealer. It’s a good light reflector but beyond rubbish as a concealer I’m afraid. I’m a makeup artist and this is the one product I forbid my clients to use!!

Christina Avatar

I have to agree with NARS’ Orgasm! Super Orgasm is very overrated as well! Too glittery on my face! I prefer shimmer, not chunks of glitter, on my cheeks!

margot Avatar

NARS orgasm ! I think the color looks great in the pan, but when I put it on it looks very unnatural (even the tinniest amount !) and it’s so shimmery I look like a disco ball in the sun :/ I don’t really don’t understand the hype over it

Gillian Avatar

For me it is Revlon Colourstay foundation. No matter how quickly I blend it, it still never looks right, and I got the oil/combo one but it makes my skin look dry and flaky and not just matte. I’ll be sticking with my studio fix fluid till something else catches my eye. How about a most underrated beauty product poll? x

FrauleinFoodie Avatar

Thank you!

I’m wearing it right now and I’m so tired of fighting with it! It dries too quickly, but not totally dry, no, sticky dry. So that you can’t blend it, and it’s hard to set. AND I haven’t found the magic quantity that won’t make it look totally obvious that I’m wearing foundation. Why is everyone so happy with it? Yes, it lasts a long time, but I see it on my face all day.

It may be the best drugstore brand, but it is not perfect.

Frances Avatar

I am beyond understanding why NARS Orgasm is touted as a natural flush. I don’t know anyone who flushes peach. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but I don’t think it looks “natural”.

Sami Avatar

I personally HATE Nars Orgasm..especially in the Multiple form. Maybe just not my color? I don’t know. My true feelings are that people only hype over it and want to buy it because it’s called “Orgasm.” If it were something like “Golden Pink” not one would buy it.

Sarah A. Avatar

I totally agree about UDPP! I had been using it and thought it was fine until I tried the NARS Eyeshadow Base! It’s awesome. It is more expensive, but I feel like my eyeshadow goes on better and lasts forever with it, and I figure if I’m going to spend as much on my nice eye shadows as I do, I want to make sure they look their best and stay looking their best on me.

Iliana Avatar

Agree with NARS Orgasm, which I find to be dupe-able by MAC Nymphette once on my lips. MAC Lychee Luxe, too. People have been raving about how it’s such a universal color but it didn’t work out well on me without something underneath. 🙂

But I guess this is just a matter of personal taste. 🙂

Kelly Avatar

I second that. NARS O! I see the appeal, because it works on so many skintones, but I have many other blushes that I feel look much prettier. NARS DT for one.

Daniella Avatar

YSL Touche Eclat is probably the most overhyped cosmetic I can think of. Never tried it but know people that use it and I though WTF is that crap?? I tried the Dior version and loved that though.

Pamela Avatar

Every makeup artist, mag editor and celeb raves over Maybelline Great Lash mascara but I think it’s terrible! I give it a chance every couple of years only to disappointed by its performance–clumping, smudging, ICK! I just don’t get it!

Voly Avatar

It’s the cheapest blackest mascara found in every store. And since they use their own brushes, and repurchase it every few days it never dries out for them. So that’s the hype, but otherwise it’s not that good.

Meredith Avatar

I totally agree with you! I could never understand what the big deal is. I think it’s crummy mascara. There are so many other drugstore brands far better! Loreal Voluminous is 10 times better!

Yiran Avatar

I agree for Nars orgasm. I find it’s not pigmented enough for a blush, and after a few hours the colour is gone.
Mineral makeup is also overhyped. I just don’t see how much superior it is to some of the truly silky and featherlight powders out there. Also, I don’t believe the claims that it’s better for your skin in any way (unless you count the SPF factor, but even that won’t last in powder form compared to in a cream), as there are no skin-benefitting ingredients in mineral makeup not found in regular powders.

Kalex Avatar

I agree on the DiorShow – it smudges on me something fierce. Also, Purity Made Simple. I don’t understand the hype over that at all – it’s basically scented Cetaphil… and alot more expensive.

Miss Ruby Rouge Avatar

I dunno, Christine, I love MAC’s “Stereo Rose” MSF but I’m still not quiet understanding what the big fiasco is about….surely I’m not the only one?! God I feel soo dirty admitting to that, I’m sure I’ll get stoned to death now!! ha ha ;p

Katie Avatar

I heard a lot of people rave about MAC’s Superslick liners and I didn’t like it! I gave mine to my best friend. It claimed to make thick and fine lines, but it didn’t make the fine line I was looking for.

I have Stereo Rose MSF and I LOVE IT. There’s no denying that! I just don’t think it would be as over hyped as it is if it weren’t so rare.

I don’t like Cover Girl Lash Blast. There… I SAID IT!

And of course, Marine Life highlight powder from To The Beach. I’m glad this is a support group because here’s my confession: I bought it and it’s still completely unused and unswatched. It’s in perfect condition, seahorse, over spray, and all. I just haven’t took the plunge to use it.

Lee Avatar

I think Orgasm was so hyped because it’s a great basic everyday blush for those who don’t have much make-up.

I had read raves about Benetint but haven’t ever really found a use for it. I agree about DiorShow.

Zoffe Avatar

Completely agree with you on both Orgasm and DiorShow!
DiorShow *is* a great mascara, but it’s just not worth it to me. If I didn’t care about money, I probably would buy it though 😉
Orgasm blush *is* super pretty and very versatile, but it’s basically the same as MAC Springsheen, so it’s not really all that unique.

Chicca Avatar

I agree with you Christine about NARS Orgasm. Some months ago I had the occasion to finally see it live (in Italy nars is not sold, we have to cross borders and go at least to France or Swiss) and I did a swatch.
Well, yes, pretty, but my MAC Mineralize Blush in Warm Soul is far much better than Orgasm!
Other over hyped… I think the crowd will kill me but MAC Vanilla is too much hyped. Years ago I overused a very similar shade by Clinique which has been discontinued since years. it was called Butter (if I’m not wrong), I loved that shade. and believe me, it was more pigmented, more natural and more everything than Vanilla!

livnzoe Avatar

i think you can get “butter” on allcosmeticswholesale.com!!
i’m from switzerland and i love this website because they sell high-end make up products for a very good price.. there are also lots of limited edition products!!
and the best thing about the website: THEY SHIP WORLDWIDE!!

Dolly Avatar

BE Mineral makeup. Gah, awful stuff! cakey no matter how much I tapped and buffed, it started out looking dry & powdery and then when I got oily throughout the day it got goopy. Plus it made me breakout. blech. makes me cringe just thinking about it

Shanna A. Avatar

Hello,
Thanks for posting and keeping us updated everyday, it’s really wonderful of you! But, I’m so shocked that you don’t like Diorshow! I LOVE it! It’s the best mascara that I have used. Granted it is the only higher-end mascara that I have used, but since originally purchasing I have had no desire to try another. I find it so interesting that it flaked on you because that never happened to me. I wonder if this has happened to a lot of other people.

Thanks again!

Whittney Avatar

SIX MONTHS isn’t a “long storing time” for mascara? Holy moly, Voly! No wonder it’s drying out… Mascaras are made to be replaced at least every 2 months!

Principessa Grassa Avatar

Clinique Black Honey. This has been touted EVERYWHERE as this wonder product that looks amazing on everybody. Well, not on me! It just makes me look like I’ve been sucking on a popsicle, and not a particularly flattering popsicle at that.

Ruxandra Avatar

I totally agree, Nars orgasm is ok, not that spectacular, and I personally find L’Oreal’s voluminous Carbon Black mascara better then the Dior show mascara. I also don’t find the YSL touche eclat that spectacular, plus after a while it becomes stinky. A, also Benefit High Beam and Moon Beam are whatever in my oppinion.

Glo Avatar

Mac Ripe Peach! I was crazy enough to buy a back up. When I tried it out, it was rather sheer for my nc42 skin. I really had to build it up. Pretty in the pan, but not worth the amount of money people are willing to spend on ebay for it.

Sabrina Avatar

Nars blushes. I haven’t like any of tried, except for Outlaw which was dc’d.
Also, Make Up For Ever Face & Body and MAC Face & Body. Hated both of them. The MAC one was very oily (and I don’t have oily skin atm) and the MUFE one was so heavily fragranced it gave me a headache and my skin had a horrible reaction to it (peeling, etc).

Glo Avatar

Oh and I agree with you Christine about Nars Orgasm. Too shimmery/glittery. For those of you who find this to be a problem, what I’ve done to really tone down the disco ball effect to get that nice coral sheen is to dabble the brush into the blush, then before you apply it to the skin, spritz some fix + on that brush. Once you apply it, you’ll see the difference. If you like that dewy look, then leave it as is. Otherwise you can set it with some translucent powder and voila =).

El Avatar

This was actually a little too harsh for me, but my husband fell in love with it cuz he has large pores and is blackhead-prone. Wish I would’ve snagged more just for him 🙂

Jess Avatar

oops = I love Nars Orgasm and I adore YSL touche eclat which are mentioned a lot…maybe I should also try Diorshow LOL

For me it is the Nars Multiples…too glittery and shiny and useless unless just using it as a highlighter.

Amber Avatar

I too am with you on Diorshow Christine – also flaked on me and the tube dried out way too quickly for the money. I also think MUFE HD founation is over-hyped – no colors match me and the formula is so-so. MUFE HD Primer is also nothing to write home about. And I will never understand the hype over Maybelline Great Lash or Cetaphil. Great Lash is a mess and Cetaphil does nothing for removing my makeup.

Erika Avatar

Diorshow Blackout, any HD Foundation (i look oily with all of them, but dont have oily skin), Nars Orgasm, MAC’s greasepaintsticks (not blendable)

Rachel Avatar

Urban Decay’s Midnight Cowboy & MCRA eye shadows. I do not understand how these are their best sellers let alone even usable. The shade is so bland and the glitter is ridiculous. I love Urban Decay but hate these with a passion.

Callen Avatar

I don’t think it’s actually possible for anything to be hyped more than Stereo Rose was. Just by that fact, unless it was a revolutionary beauty product, it was overhyped 😛

The thing had its own hashtag on Twitter for crying out loud!

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

Agree with Diorshow and Orgasm
MAC eyeshadows (please forgive me everyone!)I just find the quality to be inconsistent from color to color, even if they’re in the same category.
Any kind of mineral makeup
Clinique Dramatically Different moisturizer!!!!!!!
Chanel No.5

Jean Avatar

Totally there with you on the Clinique “Dramatically Different Moisturizer”! I have 2 sample bottles just sitting around–you know how they always give you the lotion, a lipstick and a mascara for special samples. Thought it would be such a great deal at first because everyone was saying how wonderful it was. I put it on and it felt like grease. I gave it to my mother, who has VERY dry skin and it made her break out, at 54 years old.

Jean Avatar

Rock & Republic blushes. I mean yes, they are huge, and the quality is comparable to NARS blushes. They have similarly sexy, kinky names. However I don’t know that it deserves all the hype it gets, nor would I ever pay the full price of $40 for a single blush. I did get two at 50% off but only because I thought they would give me the $25 credit they promised. They reneged, and that makes me think even worse of the products. Overall, after using it, I would say it’s fine, but cheaper blushes will do the same job.

Quinctia Avatar

Well, I like UD 24/7 pencils, but there are equally-performing alternatives for as low as half the price. So, they aren’t the best ever, they’re just decent for the price.

While this might get me throttled over here, most of those MAC LE collections…I just don’t see the appeal of them. This has nothing to do with the actual cosmetics, but the packaging and build-up…I just don’t get it. Especially the latest one with the tartan…I just…don’t see it.

HH Avatar

China Glaze nailpolish. It’s horrible, dries matte-ish and always goes on a darker color than it looks in the bottle. You’re better off buying a drug store brand.

Hayley Avatar

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. It is just. plain. horrible. I know everyone’s lashes are different…but it definitely did not work for me. I’ve tried the waterproof, the non-waterproof and the blackest black versions and they’ve all miserable failed i.e. major smudging, flaking, clumping, no lengenthening, curling, etc. I just don’t get how it can be the number one mascara!… (and there’s my little rant for the day 😛 )

Anna Avatar

Totally agree! I do love the colors (which is why I buy them), but I have application issues sometimes. I often have to thin them out. They also chip a little too quickly for me. I much prefer Zoya. Long lasting and application is a dream.

I don’t like OPI either. Boring colors and it chips too easily!

mally hale Avatar

I love this Post~! and I love eyelash curlers and having great lashes~! I need them as my lashes are so so straight.
My favorite for the price is the Hot Lashes 2 PC heated eyelash curler~! It WORKS the BEST. It has a sturdy curler just like the SHU UEMURA one and comes with a small pink heater base thingy. I put the curler on the heater and it heats the pad so the curl last for me till the next day.
My lashes stay super curly and my eyes look 3 times as big.
I read reviews on Amazon.com and got mine at thier HotLashes.com site.
My major Rave..best out there for the money..
hth…:)

SammyWhammy Avatar

MAC Fix+, it just sits and collects dust for me. Paint Pots, I don’t get it. Benefit products. UDPP. MAC eyeshadows, seriously some of them suck. Tinted Lip Conditioners, overpriced for what they are. cheanel nail polishes. the list goes on. lol

Marie Avatar

I’m a huge Nars fan, but I think Orgasm is way overhyped. What’s most annoying about it is that Nars put an Orgasm item in every single one of their gift sets and palettes. Enough already!

Maxi Avatar

I totally agree. I think they have great products for the price, but all of the Youtubers seem to only use MAC product after MAC product…there are other amazing brands out there that deserve the spotlight.

Yumi Avatar

Aww, NARS Orgasm was my first blush ever! I still have a soft spot for it even though I’ve since bought way more other blushes and barely use it now. I just keep it in my bag for when I need to throw a face on cuz of the size.

As for me, MUFE HD foundation and powder, anything by Benefit, NARS multiples (I hate them, glitter can be nice but not like that!), Lancome’s oscillation stuff, Maybelline and CG mascaras, MAC foundations and mascaras, and UD 24/7 eyeliners (somehow they like to smudge on me :<). There's more, but I won't go on.

Laura Avatar

MAC Lightscapade! Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of MSFs in general and I do like Lightscapade, but I don’t really get why it’s so much more hyped than many others.

I also agree with you on NARS Orgasm. I bought it because of all the hype and I do like it a lot, but no more than a lot of other blushes.

Marine Life I also think is only OK. It was the shimmery seahorse that did it for people.

UD Naked Palette is another one. I like it a lot and it’s so useful, but I could just as easily compile a custom 15 pan palette of MAC and UD shadows.

I loooove Stereo Rose though. Seriously love it.

Cornelle Avatar

Nars orgasm, without a doubt! While I like the color, it looks so frosty on me and accentuates my pores. Lancome shimmer mandarin sky is much a prettier, type of “orgasm” color, plus no frostiness here.

Xtina Avatar

Beauty blender! I bought one of these because a youtube guru was ranting and raving about it, so I figured I’d give it a try. There’s no real improvement when I use it with Chanel Vitaluminaire, but when I use it with Mac select moisture cover it does provide a much better finish. Still, I’m not sure I’d say it’s amazing.

Kim Avatar

I must say MAC’s stereo rose, I do own it and like it but its not a must have item. I actually think there are better coral blushes out there.

Also the Urban Decay Naked palette. I ordered it when it first came out because everyone was saying how amazing it was, but when I received it I wasn’t really impressed. Its a very pretty palette great to use everyday, however I don’t really think any of the colors are very unique.

Kim Avatar

Almost forgot, MAC Dazzleglasses!!! You pay more for a dazzleglass than you would for a lipglass from MAC, and you get so little product. It’s ridiculous!

Mamavalveeta03 Avatar

I’m most often disappointed in mascaras: Maybelline Great Lash (why all the awards???), Diorshow (highly overpriced!), Fiberwig (meh). But also, I HATE Bare Escentuals eyeshadows. Talk about a MESS!!

Shi Avatar

YSL Touche Eclat – Was so excited to try this after years of hearing rave reviews and finally watching thesPnation’s videon on it. Tried it and it didn’t seem to be any different than using a concealer a shade lighter on me. Supposedly one is sold every twenty seconds in the world. Is someone making these numbers up?

Covergirl Lashblast – It’s not terrible, it’s just not as amazing as all the YouTube gurus made it out to be.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara – I call this the deathtrap mascara. I bought my first tube for no reason other than because it was cheap and because it boasted being America’s best selling mascara. For some reason, I didn’t put together that maybe it was the best selling mascara because it was cheap. With the flimsy brush, it was very hard to get the formula to coat my lashes evenly and more often than not, the more I tried to work with it, the worse it looked.

Isabella Avatar

Ecotools brushes! Everyone was so raving about the quality and great price so I had to get them. They were a total disappointment for me, although soft, they didn’t feel ‘right’ on my skin, the powder brush left that thickening on the surface of my powders, the eyeshadow brush was useless, the only one I liked was maybe the eyelash/eyebrow comb.

Maya Avatar

Can you say Chanel No 5? Smells horrible, but sells because of the name. Also, Lancome Definicils. Overpriced and nothing special…you can find a mascara at the drugstore that does the same thing. And finally, UDPP. It creases and I find it hard to blend my eyeshadows during application. NARS Smudgeproof is much better!

And I agree about NARS Orgasm blush, it really is beautiful and a great quality product, I just don’t think it’s the best color out there or perfect for everyone. The Dior mascaras don’t live up to the hype either. Many flake, dry up WAY too fast, are impossible to remove, and/or don’t condition lashes.

ak Avatar

OMG I thought that I was the only one who thought that about No. 5! I’ve hated the smell of it all my life, it just smells so stale and old but it breaks my heart becuase to me No. 5 is still the prettiest bottle in the world! I love its clear cut shape as it’s so timeless and modern, and I love the Andy Warhol picture that he did of the bottle! Although even worse is the Coco Chanel perfume with the black label, again pretty but disgusting. Don’t like the any of the Chance perfumes because they’re all too ordinary, weak, and boring; nothing to them.

But I do like the Coco Mademoiselle, Cristalle Eau Verte, No. 5 Eau de Premiere, and the two Allure perfumes.

Karen Avatar

Maybelline Greatlash Mascara wins every year in Allure magazine’s best products list but it flakes and smudges on me and gives me raccoon eyes by lunchtime.
The MAC Marine Life highlight powder is beautiful . . . until you try to wear it!

Tracy Avatar

Mac Marine Life
Laura Mercier Mineral Powder-to me it’s just like all the rest out there
NARS Sheer Glow Foundation
Maybelline Great Lash-why does this win beauty awards? Who buys it? There are so many better drugstore
mascaras out there

shavonne Avatar

Nars Taj Mahal believe it or not and as a woman of color I was told this is our go to blush. It just made me look really glittery, not really a color payoff. Im going to keep trying though because its gorgeous 🙁

Katie Avatar

I have to disagree about Orgasm. It truly wowed me. Got to agree on Diorshow though. Not worth $26.

I think all Chanel nailpolish is the most over-hyped beauty item. The price is outrageous and I have yet to see a color that really isn’t semi-dupable. I also think it’s way too creamy and thick. Takes forever to dry.

Rosalinda Avatar

J’adore Diorshow!! It works amazing for me. I swatched Nars’ Orgasm but wasn’t impressed. I actually think UD’s primer potion is over hyped and personally, it didn’t wow me. MakeupForever’s HD blush was definitely worth the hype for me!

Kathy Avatar

Definitely has to be Mac’s Feline Eye Kohl. Sure it’s super dark and smooth but it smudges horribly on! Sometimes when I just use it on my upper lash line and but black eyeshadow over it, it smudges to my lower lash line! Totally not worth it!

ak Avatar

The Kohls they make very smudgey on purpose for the ‘smoking’ effect, they’d probably be best for dry skin. But I can use them and they stay on absolutely fine when I use a paint pot underneath them or possibly the Nars eyeshadow base.

El Avatar

I actually do love my Nars Orgasm, although I agree that it is over-hyped. I originally bought it in the blush/bronzer duo with Laguna bronzer, which I also think is an over-hyped item. They are both great products but I think there are better out there. Laguna was much darker than I expected. For my NC40 skin, I’ve always loved my Arbonne Apricot blush when reaching for a coral tone.

I am also not a fan of MAC Studio Fix Fluid. I don’t think it works well for anyone in the dry to very dry skin category. It accentuates lines and flakes that don’t exist before application. Same thing with Studio Fix powder foundation.

I caved into the Eve Pearl HD foundation hype after IMATS and it was just ok. It’s definitely not my go-to foundation. Same goes for the salmon concealer.

Lancome Definicils- I absolutely do not get how it is their best-selling mascara. Does anyone else but me think that it isn’t even black? It looks like a dark bluish grey to me and it doesn’t do anything. I LOVE my Lancome mascaras but I don’t know why they even keep this one around, especially at their price point!

Again, not all these products are bad and I will still use some of them. Just don’t deserve the hype IMO

Sarah A. Avatar

I think Covergirl and Maybelline mascaras are overrated… Neither give me really lush lashes, and they all feel super “crispy” on! Yuck. I don’t like Orgasm, either, and I absolutely LOVE NARS blushes. I just think that shade is too shimmery and otherwise mediocre. I’m not crazy about YSL Rouge Volupte, either… I bought one once because the color was beautiful, but the creamy, streaky texture drove me nuts, I actually ended up returning it 🙁 But I guess different people have different products that they prefer working with and that work better with their skin types.
I just bought Diorshow Blackout, now I’m scared to try it! I used a Plum one I got for $10 during a Sephora weekly special, and it worked great… Hopefully the one I just bought doesn’t flake like crazy!

lazeny Avatar

I have to agree w/ others about NARS Orgasm and MUFE HD. Orgasm is nice but a little underwhelming. MUFE HD is not good at all, it’s sort of a niche foundation ideally used when taking photos/videos in HD.

Sam Avatar

Nars Sheer Glow – apparently formulated for dry skin, yet showed up patches of dryness I didn’t even know I had.
Vaseline Lip Therapy – makes my lips feel even more dry, sore and cracked than they are before I apply it.
Clinique 3 Step System – I bought this when I decided I wanted to start a proper skin regime. Didn’t do my research on these products and from using this my skin went from being normal with few dry patches to VERY dry to the point where it felt like my skin was cracking.

I agree on DiorShow: It dragged my lashes down and flaked like crazy.
Great Lash by Maybelline: Just: WHY?! A cheap, black mascara that doesn’t add anything to my lashes but a flaky, chunky coat 🙁
Clinique Dramatically Different Lotion: doesn’t do anything for me and I hate the smell of it.
Chanel Mat Lumière foundation: makes my face look orange, flaky and it doesn’t mattify at all on me.
All limited editions by MAC: most of the products are easily dupable and most of the time I find the colors really hard to wear.

But I have to say…
I love ‘Heartless’, ‘Oh So Fair’ and ‘Her Own Devices’ from the last collection. I really depends on which collection they launch.

Totally agree with you about DiorShow. I bought and opened a tube a couple weeks ago and I am super disappointed, I will I just would have bought L’Oreal Telescopic again 🙁

I do love NARS Orgasm though!

I also think Bare Minerals is extremely overhyped.

Touche Eclat, Diorshow, Orgasm, and UDPP

My big one is Clinique DDML. I actually worked for Clinique at one point and people just went nuts for this stuff! There is nothing special in it. It even has mineral oil in it. It doesn’t even repair the moisture barrier (Clinique will tell you this themselves). Kudos to Clinique for employing marketing geniuses, this one will go down in history.

I agree about NARS “Orgasm” blush products, i didn’t find anything special about it at all, it was actually too shimmery for me.
Also, the Korres lip butters had a lot of hype and I just thought they were really sheer and weren’t even that moisturizing on my lips

DiorShow, hands down. I have very long, thick, full lashes with a great natural curl, and it always seemed to make them look blah. It flaked super easily, and dried out in what seemed like days. I do like the plum version of it though, and seem to not have those issues (maybe because I only use it on the tips of my lashes vs. the entire lash?).

NARS Orgasm is pretty overrated and overhyped.

I guess UDPP doesn’t work on everyone, but I personally love it, so I can honestly say now – any eyeshadow over $10 is overrated.

Bare minerals. I bought a starter kit and an eye kit a few years back. Works okay but wears off in about 15 minutes. The eye makeup is horrible in my opinion and wears off really quickly without a primer.

I’m with you Christine. I’ve never had luck with DiorShow. It flaked for me. I also had no luck with Maybelline Great Lash. It smeared horribly everywhere. I’m glad they work for other people, though.

Nars lipglosses! I heard they were awesome, & after purchasing Orgasm i was not impressed! It was wayyyy to sticky and goopy for my liking.

I love DiorShow Iconic, out of all the mascaras I have ,this is the only one that thickens my eyelash to the point where it looks like I have on falsies. I tried Nars Orgasm, let’s just say I’m glad I didnt waste my $$.

I’m going to say UDPP. Also Revlon Colorstay. Colorstay is overrated because I can’t find my shade. I’m not the type to mix foundations to get my perfect shade.

NARS’ Orgasm blush forsure. Flattering, but I’d rather go for a more unique shade that flatters my skintone specifically. Plus it’s a little too glittery for my taste.
