Oh definitely Anastasia Beverly Hills! Previously, they only had brow products (which I love), but they totally grabbed my attention with the Modern Renaissance palette, the single shadows that can be added to custom palettes, all those Glow Kits (including the more unique Moonchild), and all those killer Lip glosses. What’s so impressive is that they’ve expanded so quickly into new products, but they rarely have a miss.
Idk how, but I totally forgot how blown away I have been this past year with ABH! Thank you for reminding me of this jewel of a brand, Katherine! And Wendy, Mariella, AB, Susan…et am!

I agree! I was using the dip brow but I got a gleam pallette. Then I went a little nuts and bought the Moon Child, Modern Renaissance, and Master palette.
I never really paid attention to them before but I have been into Bare Minerals and Buxom this year.
Marc Jacobs – I like the packaging, like the aesthetic and have been considering getting some of the Style Eyecon 7 palettes but haven’t yet. I don’t want to introduce a new brand into my collection (yet). It doesn’t seem like the quality is consistent with other products (lipsticks, eyeliners, mascara). It might be another brand for only eyeshadow and blush for me.
Chanel – I like their Tisse quads. After I got Empreinte du Desert, I mined the Temptalia reviews for other quads that were still available and got those. I like quads for the ease-of-use and the ‘one-and-done’ in the mornings. I like the Glossimers and have tried the mascara – it’s okay, nothing special.
Tom Ford – mainly for eyes and blush. I’ve been hooked ever since I tried the cream colors for eyes and Cocoa Mirage and Nude Dip. I have tried a few lipsticks and I’m not seeing what all the fuss is about – maybe I just need to try a few more/different? The last few shades were either gritty with sparkle or drying or both.
YSL – I’ve had my eye on this brand for a while for the lip products (I love the packaging of Rouge Shine in Oil and the like lipsticks). I tried a Rouge Shine and a Rouge Pur Couture lipstick and the colors were decent, texture was nice but after a while they were drying and the fragrance was a deal-breaker. I also tried their Volume Effet mascara and really wanted to love it because I’ve heard great things, but I just can’t deal with the fragrance.
Viseart – I love their eyeshadow and blush/cheek palettes. I would have gotten their cheek palettes but I have too many dupes.
I should have Chanel on my list as well: I always find something to love. The further off my radar the usual luxury brands seem to get, Chanel still finds me buying.
I know what you mean about the luxury brands fading from view – I feel like I don’t really pay attention to them lately. Maybe it’s because they are not on a turnstile release schedule like MAC or maybe because I’ve lost faith in the quality. As for Chanel, I’m new to them this year but I really like the Tisse quads and the blushes. I have yet to try a lipstick but that might be soon – I love the vampy colors and the reds they’ve put out but have been too chicken to wear them. Maybe if I just did a small swatch on the lips and then really lip-brushed it in for more of a stain or velvet textured look …..hmmm.
I TOTALLY agree with you in the tom ford lipsticks! The two I have are both gritty with glitter. I did order both online so I wasn’t able to test them beforehand. Everyone raves about them, maybe there are better ones than the 2 I picked.

For me, Giacomo, Luciano, Tony and Michael (bolds/reds) were drying and Eric and Derek (frosts/metallics) were gritty and drying. It’s been a long time since I had a frost lipstick but I didn’t have any luck with those, and I have yet to find a bold or a red, regardless of brand, that isn’t drying on me. :-\
Thanks Pearl. So sorry to hear so many of the Tom Ford lippies didn’t work out 🙁 I was eyeing Eric/Derek, along with some of the frost/metallics, so I will only buy from retailers with easy returns.
I just got Chanel’s Empreinte during Desert not very long ago, it is my first eyeshadow quad from the line although I have been a fan of the blushes for awhile. Can I ask what some of your favorites are among the other Tisse quads?

I like Tisse D’ Automne (warm earthy), Tisse Rivoli (warm berry), and Candeur Et Experience (warm rusty earthy) for deeper, warmer looks.
For cooler looks (which I have to warm up with a warmer brown in the crease in addition to what’s in the quad), I like Tisse Essentiel (though this is more matte/satin and tends to be light on pigmentation for me and I really have to layer and build, I don’t mind it because I have to be careful with placement on my cooler shades), and Tisse Gabrielle.
I like to wear Tisse Vendome (warm peach and bronze) and Empreinte du Desert (green/sage and bronze) for spring/summer, although I’m still wearing both now because it’s still warm here.
I wear these with a primer and they last all day (8 hour work shift) for me. I was going to get Venetien but I think that would be too cool and muddy (I’m NC22 ish, hazel eyes) . . . still on the fence about that one. I also love the Paris for the color but I don’t think I’d use it much.

Urban Decay, MAC, KVD and *even* Estee Lauder! Also those more edgy, interesting shades by Bite have been a major leap for the brand that was fairly unexpected this year. Nars has likewise given us some lovely surprises this past year, too.

Ha ha ha *even* Estee Lauder – I KNOW!! I never saw myself in that demographic for the brand but lately this year they have put out some more relevant (for me) colors. I think it has to do with The Edit and how they are trying to appeal to all age groups, not just the older and more sophisticated or classic aesthetic. I recently bought Modern Mercury – my first ever EL purchase – and really like it. I’m not sure if it is because of the collaboration with Victoria Beckham (not really a fan of hers per se, but I have always liked how simple and understated she seems) or if it’s just the quality, but I love it. I love the packaging. The whole VB collection is working for me and EL now has my attention.
I never thought I’d buy from them because of the (seeming) targeted demographic, and in recent years swore them off altogether. And then I saw that both Tom Ford and MAC are under the brand umbrella. ??
Same here! I haven’t bought anything from Estee Lauder in probably 25 years. Then this year, I got Scarlet Eclipse (red cream/gold glitter shadow duo) from the Edit line (thanks for the tip Michele!) and the VB Modern Mercury highlighter, and have been eyeing some of their Pure Color Envy lippies, including that really purple one. They’ve definitely breathed new life into that brand!
I would say NARS, First Aid Beauty, and Sephora Collection got a lot more of my attention then they had before, while some brands have stayed on my radar, like ColourPop, Tanya Burr, Peter Thomas Roth and Charlotte Tilbury. I think I’ve been less interested in what Hourglass is putting out (their last two holiday palettes in particular left me PO’ed because of how much a rip off they were to consumers, where usually palettes are a better deal per oz) and have been unimpressed with some brands like Tarte, Too Faced, and Benefit, though I think that’s more of an aesthetic thing, as well as just a lot of new launches that aren’t my thing.
Three brands:
1. Chanel, as a result of solid reviews for its summer and fall collections and the cute ribbon blush that kicked off the year;
2. Tom Ford, this year was my 1st TF summer and I felt I caught up on past favorites as well as new releases in the spring/summer collections; and
3. Bobbi Brown, while I am a regular for base products, brightening bricks and lipsticks, some of her more creative, pigmented products in recent years have been released during this 25th Anniversary year. Standouts: the Sunset Glow Highlighting powders, the City Collection eye & cheek palettes, the long-wear liquid liners with sparkle, the Retouching Wand, the Illuminating finishing powder, and the original 10 lipsticks from year 1 + the 10 updated for year 25, this year has been a solid hit for BB!
Those oldies are back? Some are way yays! Prob started my love for brown reds.
Yes, Chanel impressed me with their summer quad (Empriente du Desert) and fall collection ( red/brown shadows with a very rare, true red eyeliner). If they keep this up, I will be happily broke
nars and urban decay, primarily because of their audacious and vice lipstick overhauls. i usually only use lippies to change my look hence you can imagine how many i have and continue to buy… all the new colours, formulas and textures are so interesting!
Anything cruelty-free that has decent reviews. I’m so sick of these massive companies Chanel, Dior, Bobbi Brown, Mac, Tom Ford (basically all Estee Lauder companies) etc. Even if they do not test on animals in U.S or U.K if they sell in China then they will be tested on animals as this is China’s policy. I honestly didn’t realise this was still so prolific in the beauty industry until this year. Now, despite loving some of these brand’s products, I refuse to support this barbaric practice in the name of beauty. There are plenty of high quality brands that do not test on animals e.g. Hourglass, Colourpop, Fyrinnae, Kat Von D. Becca and Givenchy. The Becca backlight primer and I discovered how awesome the Givenchy powders and blush are.
Definitely Urban Decay (I’m late 20’s and bought my first ever UD products this year), Lorac, Bite, and Laura Geller. Also Shiseido, but their line is seriously lacking right now. A lot of it has to do with specific things I’ve been in the market for such as UD, Bite, Shiseido for lipsticks, UD again for pencil eyeliners, Lorac for eyeshadow and blush, Laura Geller for highlighters. I’ve definitely tried to branch out this year because I’ve felt a bit disenchanted by the pricing some non-luxury brands are taking on (Becca, Nars, etc) so it has been nice to find some hits with brands that are more mid-range (except when it comes to my $28 Shiseido lipstick — still worth it lol!).
For sure Anastasia Beverly Hills because the entire line, not just the brow stuff, is available in-store at Sephora. And also Becca…I love so many of the Becca products I’ve tried. And now that Buxom is back at Sephora…it’s back on my “radar” too.
This may sound strange because it’s such a classic, but it’s Estee Lauder makeup for me (not the Edit, but the main line).
Also KVD for her shadow offerings. The Tarte line overall comes in around the edges. .
I was also introduced to Kiehl’s this past year for skin care, and they are only products I use now. I do not see that changing.

Anastasia Beverly Hills was off my radar before, but since the release of the company’s Renaissance palette, which I LOVE, I’m paying more attention to their products.
Hmm… I think it would have to Anastasia Beverly Hills, I wasn’t really interested in them before when they were only doing brow products, but since they’ve been putting out some really great products I’ve gotten more interested.
I think it would also have to be Smashbox and Bobbi Brown, their new lipsticks have made me think twice about passing the brand whenever I’m in Sephora. So, I’ve been checking out more of their products.
Urban Decay: Has been my go-to for eyeshadow only, and later for Naked foundation. But this year, the Vice launch got me into their lipstick, and then I ended up with Afterglow blush in Fetish which I absolutely love, and now I’m more into the brand as a whole…many things seem to suit my needs/style.
Fyrinnae: Tried an order this year (I live duochrome eyeshadow, and this brand kept popping up). Fantastic! I am using their pixie epoxy eyeshadow primer, and like it. Really a treat to be able to get “little sizes” of many fun shades…. and I’m using “steampunk” shade frequently, as blackened plum “with interesting shimmer” is an excellent thing!
Tarte: This one is different, not buying yet. Christine’s use of the Rainforest foundation got me watching this brand… my Ulta doesn’t carry full line (!) So they don’t have the Rainforest foundation for me to sample. But, I am newly interested in the brand.
I’ve been more interested in Marc Jacobs and Anastasia Beverly Hills! This year I got my first ABH eyeshadow palette (Modern Renaissance) and Glow Kit (Moonchild) and I absolutely love them, though I wish the shadows were a little less powdery. I actually think I’ve found my favorite highlight formula and I’m super impressed with how even the colorful shades don’t look like I have a streak of purple over my cheeks when I’m in indoor lighting. As for Marc Jacobs, I don’t have much luxury beauty at all but I love the little Sephora birthday gift lipstick and now I’m definitely planning to save to try some other items from the line.
ABH–I’d mostly associated them with brow products (and I have a lot of brow, so they weren’t tempting), but their MR palette felt like a game-changer–not just different from what other brands were putting out, but the way they’d clearly made efforts to AVOID supply scarcity (artificial or otherwise). It really impressed me. Their fun/weird highlighters–though not something I’d regularly wear–are similarly different. The lip glosses get great reviews, and as someone who may have to ditch lipstick for a more hydrating/forgiving finish soon (Accutane is ravaging my lips), I’ll probably pick up their mini kits soon.
MUFE–I finally gave in and bought some singles. Their mattes are incredible (I bought a trio of daily-use colors–one cool transition, one warm transition, and a skin tone), and four new pearls/shimmers/metallics came in the mail yesterday for me to play with. Yay!
Estée Lauder (regular, not the Edit)–I’ve always thought of them as a fussy old-lady line (love old ladies, but I’m not exactly grand dame material), That Victoria Beckham collab made me sit up and pay attention.
Bite Beauty–when everyone else was coming out with summer brights, they released Squid and Kale and Thistle. I already owned (and love) a dozen of their luminous cremes/crayons/etc, but their formula overhaul plus interesting colors have made me a fierce brand loyalist. 🙂 (Though I do miss how the LC lipsticks were a little more hydrating than the AB formula.)
Tarte–I’d come to associate them with crappy eyeshadow and hardpan blush (ALL their old formula blushes went hardpan on me in a year! I was so cranky!), so I hadn’t purchased anything from them in ages. They seem to have (sort-of) upped their game–powder eyeshadow palettes still seem sketch, but their blush color wheel is going to be a Christmas present, I was blown away by the texture of their Rainforest of the Sea palette, and I’m probably going to have to hunt down some of their universally-lauded Shape Tape.
Yes, ABH impressed me a LOT with the their Modern Renaissance palette! First, they didn’t play it safe with 50 shades of brown–they have some fairly daring colors in there like orange, red, pinky red, and yellow tan. They didn’t over hype it, or create some artificially limited supply to drive sales. It was well made, well stocked, and they relied on word of mouth (from both bloggers and customers) to sell it, and it’s been a massive hit. I compare that to Too Faced –months of sneak peeks on social media to drive hype, and artificially limited supply to drive frenzied sales for so-so quality palettes (Sweet Peach, Sugar Pop, PB&J)
I buy from any line when I find that ‘special’ product, but I have to be honest, I always watch for the new Chanel and Dior collections. Not that I always buy something from them, but they never cease to intrigue me. I’m also liking what I see from Estee Lauder — that’s been new line of particular interest for me this last year.
ColourPop, with their releases of the ultra satin and glossy formulas, and Kat Von D with the new brushes and recent palette! The most impressive indie brand to me has been Shiro Cosmetics with their Eevee-inspired highlighting creams. There have been plenty of companies making progress but these three have caught my eye.
I agree with Bite Beauty (the Amuse Bouche and multisticks!) and Urban Decay, for myself. I’ve also been looking more at NARS, Too-Faced and Benefit. This doesn’t mean I’ve purchased from all these, necessarily, but they’re on my radar now. I’ve also been paying more attention to a few indies, especially Shiro (!!! — I keep drifitng back to their website with great longing).
I have always had a love for Chanel products and find myself buying something from almost all of their releases. I also love the smell of their products which I know is a deal breaker for some.
I have been buying and experimenting with a lot of Korean skin care products and am starting to find many that I really like. In particular Sulwhasoo, Chosungah 22 and Heimish. I follow a You Tube channel that is pretty much dedicated to Asian skin care and have been following her advice since she is a little older also. I have found that the skin care I use to use just doesn’t work for me anymore. My skin has become much too dry and those dreaded sun spots from growing up on the beach in Southern Cal are driving me crazy.
I also have started buying more Dior. Their eye shadows are not as heavily pigmented but more and more, I am enjoying that. I don’t have to do so much blending and they also don’t seem to muddy on my lids which is a problem I have with some shadows.
Finally MUFE eye shadow. Now you can’t say their pigmentation is poor but they do blend very easily and if I use a lite hand they work really well and they have such gorgeous colors.
Deborah, which You Tube channel for Asian skincare? Any recs for Sulwhasoo? I have more mature, drier skin, with sun spots too.

For the first time, Givenchy. Love their primers and the foundations are pretty nice. Guerlain (Baby Glow and Meteorites), ABH, Marc Jacobs (but only for my beloved Face III foundation brush), Chanel.
I think this is the year I fell in love with Urban Decay. Also, although I had bought some NYX before this year, this is the year it became an obsession for me. Last year, I was all about the classy brands like Chanel, Armani, Dolce and Gabbana, and Nars, and this year, I’m more into the edgy stuff. Who knows what 2017 will bring?
Also this year, I discovered and purchased quite a bit of BH. Never heard of this brand until Temptalia. And I got a lot of MAC and Ulta’s house brand as well.
Urban decay def! colourpop, ABH, nyx, covergirl (surprisingly!!), maybelline, tarte, Lorac, and nars. bite has me interested but they’re not as on my radar as these other brands.
It must be Colour Pop, as I’ve never bought anything from them and now I have a few eyeshadows I really like, and some really good liquid lipsticks.
OCC got a bit of love as well this year.
Then there are the usual UD and MAC.
Estee Lauder latest offerings
ABH – has introduced new, higher quality products into her range that have appealed to a wider demographic.
Urban Decay – their new lipsticks.
I was starting to get a little bored with Urban Decay when it went “everything Naked” for awhile. Naked palettes, Naked lipsticks, Naked Flushed, Naked lipglosses, etc. I love some of the Naked products and I think it’s a great line, but I didn’t become a fan of UD for nudes and neutrals. I’ve been paying much more attention this last year or so as they’ve brought color back: Urban Spectrum Palette (phenomenal), the Afterglow Blushes and Highlighers (fantastic), the expanded and upgraded lipstick line; and this season the lip palettes, the Vintage Vault items, and now Full Spectrum. It’s like seeing the old Urban Decay again.
Also, ABH has more of my attention because of the outstanding Modern Renaissance Palette and the beautiful lip glosses. MUFE, because of the Artist Shadow palettes and the gorgeous Plexi-glosses. MUFE has been making a lot of changes lately. Not all of them are good ones, but they draw my attention.
NYX, e.l.f., Makeup Revolution, and Wet n Wild for drugstore. They’ve all been adding more and better products and showing DS can be as good or better than mid-range/high end.
I’d like to see the flip side of this question: What brands are we paying less attention to this year?
Oh yes!! SO glad UD brought color back. For a while, I wasn’t buying anything from them. I kept trying to do those nude/naked/neutral face looks (b/c that was the trend), but I usually ended up looking sick/dead, or at best, very boring looking. Just way too much brown on brown eyes, brown blush made me look dirty/muddy, and don’t even get me started on nude lips. Whereas a pop of color does wonders for me!
Makeup: Nars, Anastasia, Marc Jacobs, Deborah Lippmann, NYX.
Fragrances: Chanel, Diptyque.
Tarte has caught my eye, Lisa Eldridge has been speaking about an organic line that sounds lovely that I’ve been meaning to try that Beautylish stocks Kjaer Weis. I’ve also been using more Kevyn Aucoin, which I love, nice to see his legacy being handled in such a thoughtful, quality manner.
Clé de Peau, Tom Ford, Guerlain, and La Mer have been on my radar a lot this year.

I feel like I’m interested in Anastasia Beverly Hills in the last few months, whereas I never gave them a second thought once I found a product I found comparable to Brow Wiz. After I bought the Modern Renaissance palette on a whim, I have been tempted to buy a lot more of their shadows.
I have also been Clinique crazy this year, buying foundation, blushes, eyeshadows… for some reason I just find the brand more appealing than ever.
I also have given ColourPop and Makeup Geek a try for the first time in the last six months and am interested in trying more from them.
Cle de Peau, Dior, Tom Ford, Bobbi Brown, YSL, usually not Estee Lauder but I did get two shadows and the highlighter Victoria Beckham did for Estee Lauder which I love. I don’t purchase anything from La Prairie because it is very expensive but I do love & purchase their Cellular Radiance Cream Blush it is one of my favorites.
I would say I’ve been looking more at high-end drugstore brands. I’ve experimented with several dupes I’ve found for the higher price products I have always purchased. I have been truly surprised by some of them and even shocked to find some that perform better than their higher priced counterparts. I introduced myself to the NYX line this past year and found I was really happy overall with their products. The other think I’ve done is the ‘less is more’ approach. It is so much each easier to have 4 lipsticks to choose from than 8; 6 eyeshadows rather than 12 and I haven’t missed the extras at all! My makeup drawer is now nice and clean and organized! The only 2 things I didn’t try to do drugstore with were my foundation and my nail lacquer.
I saved all of my skincare and makeup receipts from 2015 and added them up in January of this year. I was SHOCKED when I saw what I had spent! I had been telling myself all year that I was saving for a new sofa; I could have purchased a sofa AND a chair with what I spent on skincare and makeup!

I’ve been paying more attention to Urban Decay again. I have and love all of the Naked palettes but was getting a little bored with Naked everything so it’s been really exciting to see their new lipstick relaunch and some of their brighter eyeshadow releases (can’t wait to get Full Spectrum). I’m also loving their vintage vault releases.
A brand I haven’t purchased yet but have been thinking a lot about is ABH. I only associated the brand with brow products, which I don’t use, so never paid any attention to them. But now that I’ve seen the Modern Rennaissance palette, eyeshadows, and highlighter palettes I’m really thinking about what my first purchase will be.
Tarte and Too Faced both are also on my beauty radar again. I haven’t run out and bought all their stuff but I’ve actually bought a few more of their products this past year. I’m usually not that interested in either brand bc I don’t feel like the quality is always there. But I like both brands for mascaras and a few other items. I’ve actually paid attention to their new releases instead of automatically writing them off as things I don’t care about.

I’ve been changing my makeup routine and purchased bronzers from Nars & Hourglass I’m in love with Too faced melted lipsticks of them and loving the Smashbox studio foundation …also Anastasia beverly hills I’m now using the eyebrow stencils and it has changed my brow looks amazingly don’t need to go to the spa or beauty salon
Hmm, that’s a tough one, since I go for products rather than brands. Let me see … I’ve bought stuff from Chantecaille, BH Cosmetics, Chanel, NARS and City Cosmetics. A bit of everything, really.
Well, I’ve always been a fan of Bite Beauty, but even so, the Amuse Bouche lipsticks have caught my attention more than any other launch this year. I’ve also taken more of an interest in Becca and Anastasia this year, probably because they’ve become available at my local Sephora.

So far this year I’ve been into more indie makeup brands. I discovered brands like Juvias Place, Nomad, Sleek. I like Morphe Brushes a lot but they are so popular I don’t know if they are considered a indie brand anymore. I’ve purchased the Best brushes from brands that surprised me. Like Coastal Scent and BH Cosmetics.
I’ve found that I can get better quality products, for a better price. Maybe not all the time but enough for me to keep my eye on. Also, when it comes to eyeshadow, palettes from indie brands seem to be more vibrant. I’m not sure how Highend brands choose the shades in a palette, but I end up never using 1/3 of a palette because the colors don’t pop on my skin or they look ashy. Indie brands seem to just choose beautiful vibrant colors that every skintone will enjoy.
Highend eyeshadow palettes cost to much to never use some many of the shadows. Shopping the indie brands is a no brainier.
I have recently become obsessed with Anastasia Beverly Hills due to the gorgeous, opaque lip glosses. I have been reading reviews and viewing swatches for awhile and plan to purchase quite a few in the near future.
