Free for Haul Friday, Volume #355

Share any beauty goodies you may have picked up in the last week or so, or maybe what’s on your way or on your wish list for next week or month. 🙂

  • Haul: It’s actually been a completely ridiculous week of stuff coming in! Most of what I bought will be swatched/reviewed (well, I hope), I just ask for your patience so please don’t ask me when, as I can’t make any promises! 🙂 I picked up several IT Velvet Luxe Brushes, plus all 12 shades of Estee Lauder’s Hi-Lustres, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, First Aid Beauty Lip Balm, Dior Mono Eyeshadows (x6), Anastasia Stick Foundations, Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Colors (x9)
  • Weekend plans: I’m trying to get up a half our earlier to take advantage of the “cooler” temps we’ve been having so Mellan can get a walk in! I’m also hoping to organize the garage. We’re fortunate that we don’t have that much stuff (about 1/2 of a car space worth), but it could be more organized and better laid out for greater access. It’s the last part of the house that hasn’t been organized since we moved in last year.
  • What has been the best part of your summer?: My mom and grandma visiting was a major highlight! It meant a lot for both to come!

Share your pet photos to the Temptalia Pets flickr group! 🙂

This week’s Mellan photo…

Haul: BH Cosmetics Galaxy Chic palette
Weekend plans: As it’s a long Bank Holiday weekend I’ll be working, chilling out in the garden (weather permitting), and retouching my roots!
Best part of my summer: Going to a couple of music festivals – Download and Ramblin’ Man Fair. Great beer all round as well 🙂 Also, celebrating my birthday last week.

Miradan Avatar

Oh, wow, thank you for all the awesome swatches!!! All of things I’ve been wanting to try!! I picked up EL Sly Ingenue last month and I really like it so far.

Haul: I got the other 4 Maybelline Color Jolt Intense Lip Paints I was missing. I have them all except the purple one now. Also finished a week of Joe Fresh Cosmetics reviews!

What has been the best part of your summer?: Finishing classes. lol I had nothing special happen this summer. 😛

Love your blog format. Ive had one since 2011 or so but let it drop until recently. I’m currently working on learning some more so that I can clean up my format some. Its so fun to play with makeup and post my reviews. I’ll save the link to yours so I can read your updates.

How did you link it on here?

Haul: NOTHING (I am trying to stick to my no-buy)
Weekend plans: we’ve invited my mother in law for dinner tonight (making her favourite); meeting friends we met on a cruise for lunch in their lovely lakeside town; on Sunday, my son returns from his 4 months in NYC – he’ll be home for a few days before heading back to university
Best part of my summer: visiting my son in NYC and being totally wowed by the surprise he and his older brother arranged (older son – who is in the military and stationed 3 provinces and 3,500 kms away – just casually walked into the restaurant where younger son and I had just sat down to dinner)….honestly, this was just such a fabulous delight!

Mariella Avatar

Thanks to both of you. Yup, it was amazing. They’d planned it out so well and I didn’t suspect a thing. M and I were perusing the menu when he said “Hey, look who just walked in….” (I thought it was going to be my friend I’d travelled with, who’d pulled out of dinner at the last minute) – Lo and behold, it was J. I just started screaming “Oh my God, oh my God” and the cute little waitresses in this tiny Thai restaurant came running over because they thought something was wrong at first; when the boys explained it (I was still lost for words), they took some photos for us!

kjh Avatar

Wonderful. What a great thing for your young men to arrange. Bet you cried as much as when they embarked on college and the military. As a person with no family, I find it especially touching.

Mariella Avatar

It’s funny – I never cried on their first day of school, going off to university, the military…I was always so excited for them to be embarking on their next “big adventure”. I think it helped that I was able to be a stay at home mom and so felt I’d never missed anything. I remember when my youngest started school, my sis in law, who is an absolute angel (and was also my kids’ nursery school teacher) called to find out if I was okay or crying – I mean, how sweet is that? But I was happy for all of them (it helps that we live 3 blocks from the school and I also volunteered there a lot). I imagine if my older son is deployed, depending where he ends up, that might be a teary situation indeed. But so far we’ve been lucky.

Mariella Avatar

We were just on google hangouts with our older son this evening and he said he won’t likely be home for Xmas this year (3rd year in a row) as he and a friend from highschool days are planning to go to S. America (yikes!). The past 2 years, it’s been Asia, once for a motorcycle trip and then for another highschool friend’s wedding (this young man is originally from and now lives in Hong Kong). It’s amazing how much young people travel these days and to the most exotic places as though it’s absolutely no big deal!

Genevieve Avatar

I have two sons as well and they are both fabulous – really caring, responsible and reliable adults now.
You must have been a great mum because they are now so independent and strong.

LindaP Avatar

I love their sense of adventure, but worry a bit underneath when they’re gone. Our oldest spent six months in Nicaragua working–way out on the campos–with a micro-lending NGO. Our DIL (before marriage in college) traveled all throughout SoEast Asia ALONE — this tiny, blond girl. I was not a fan of that, especially when we found out she was in a hospital in Vietnam with typhoid. Lord.

She spent the summer on Fiji last year as part of her PhD program, and she and my son just came back from trekking vacation in Iceland. This generation really is something special. Most are such good kids with values and a sense of adventure.

AB Avatar

How lovely re your son! My father did something similar — showed up from war on other side if the world, surprised my mother at our front door. I remember it to this day, decades later. It was amazing.

Haul:
Birchbox ($20.30 Off): Oribe Lip Lust Crème Lipstick (The Red and The Violet), Full Size Japonesque Velvet Touch Eyeshadow (GWP). I don’t have this order yet. I think they sent it snail mail.

Estee Lauder (20% Off): Backups of my skincare and Double Wear Concealer (Light)

MAC (Obsessed Early Access: Star Trek): Trip the Light Fantastic Powder (Highly Illogical and Luna Lustre), Lipstick (Where No Man Has Gone Before and LLAP), Pressed Pigment Eyeshadow (Bird of Prey), Studio Nail Lacquer (Enterprise), Lipglass (Warp Speed Ahead, Set to Stun, and Khaaannnn!). The powders are really good. I thought Highly Illogical would be too dark for me but it worked beautifully as a blush. Where No Man is very pretty but sheer. Bird of Prey swatches darker than it applies. I had to work to build it up. It did wear well though. I already posted swatches of both powders, the eyeshadow, and Where No Man. The nail polish and Warp Speed arrive today and I’ll post those swatches. LLAP, Set to Stun and Khaaannnn! arrive on Monday.

Neiman Marcus: Marc Jacobs Coconut Primer

Sephora: Urban Decay Liquid Moondust Eyeshadow (Zodiac and Chem Trail), Deluxe Sample MUFE Rouge Artist Crème Lipstick (C211). Haven’t tried Zodiac yet but am wearing Chem Trail today. Both swatched very well. Chem Trail wear more like a foil shadow. I paired it with the mattes from the Carli Bybel palette and the look is perfect for this hot day. I’ll probably post my swatches over the weekend or next week unless someone requests them sooner.

Ulta: Honest Beauty Eyeshadow Trio (Forest Green), Honest Beauty Wipes (GWP). Looks like another Honest winner.

Urban Decay: UD XX Vintage Nail Color – Frostbite, Plague, Uzi, Bruise, Oil Slick, Pallor. So excited to get these next week! I have one sent to me as a gift from UD (Zodiac) and it wears very well.

Weekend plans: Unknown. I’ve been off all week. Came back from my road trip earlier in the week. I got ambitious and tried on every Fall and Winter piece in my closet since I had lost weight since last year. I apparently no longer have a coat so I may look for one.

What has been the best part of your summer?: The best part of any Summer is the end of it (LOL). Probably my road trip.

Katherine T. Avatar

Wow, what a great haul! I’ve been checking out your instagram, some nice swatches there of stuff I’ve been curious about. I almost got one of the Star Trek powders, but since I’m swimming in highlight /finishing powders, held off. Glad to hear UD Liquid Moondust in Zodiac swatched well for you, it also swatched great for me in store, might pull the trigger. Can you me know how you like the Marc Jacobs Coconut Primer? Thanks!

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

IMO, for my skin tone, Luna Lustre works more as a highlighter but Highly Illogical works better as a blush. On application, Illogical takes on more of a soft plum than it swatched as. It’s a bronzy-plum but soft and pretty.
I had gotten a sample of the primer from the MJ Rep at Neiman Marcus online. I used it under the UD Naked Skin and it created a smooth canvas – it basically smoothed my skin so any pored were completely invisible. It didn’t make my skin oily like other primers can. But of course, i only had one application. When i get it, tomorrow, I’ll have a chance to check i under other foundations and let you know.

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh interesting! Looks like I need to swatch the 3 Star Trek powders in store to see if one catches my eye–bronzy plum sounds interesting! And yes, do let me know what you think about the MJ Coconut Primer

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

The coconut primer is a solid pore vanishing/smoothing primer. I don’t find any brightening properties at all (still searching for the HG for that – have a sample of the Estee Lauder one so will be trying that next). It’s supposed to be hydrating but I didn’t feel that it was overly so. It did not make my skin oily over the course of wear (10 hours). It does a good job of making foundations apply more evenly. It’s supposed to make foundations last longer but I never had an issue with that so I can’t comment. A little goes a long way with application and it lightweight and comfortable to wear. Without foundation, it works well as a skin perfector. I’m going to stick with it for a while and try it under other foundations as I switch up for Fall/Winter.

Katherine T. Avatar

Thanks for your thoughts on the MJ Coconut primer – I will get a sample from Sephora and try it out. And thanks for the suggestions on the Honest shadow kits, was curious about those. I saw your swatch of Oribe the Lust lipstick- Kling It On looks totally different, it swatches a slightly sheer black gray, but on lips, it’s more of blackish plum w/pink and purple glitter, complex and edgy. Mine has about 3-4x more pigment and glitter than the one Christine got, and it’s smooth, not streaky. Really loving it, very unique. And your swatch of Zodiac Liquid Moondust shadow looks really pigmented, just like what I swatched in store, interesting…

Lea Avatar

Next time you’re at Neiman’s you should try the Armani Light Master Primer and Cle de Peau’s Sheer Fluid Veil and Luminizing Enhancer Base. CdP isn’t inexpensive, but they are my favorites for a luminizer primer.

Alice Avatar

I’m really tempted to place a second MAC order and pick up a few more Star Trek things, like the Highly Illogical powder (esp now that someone with similar skintone to me says they like it as blush!), Skin of Evil polish (I’ve never used a MAC polish before though), and Warp Speed Ahead lipglass (even though I don’t wear gloss).

What is your website? I’d love to see your swatches!

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Alice, I suspended my blog but i still post swatches across twitter and Instagram @Binxcat4ever.

Yeah, i got sucked into 3 MAC orders. I like Illogical much better than Luna (since i really didn’t need another highlighter). Illogical has a similar glow to it like the Marc Jacobs blushes – almost a sheen with a slight shimmer. I thought about Skin of Evil but opted against it since I hate removing heavily glittered nail polish. I’m sure it’s pretty on though. I just used Enterprise and the formula is nice. It was a fairly thick polish (but not too thick to apply) and was basically opaque on a single coat, although I used 2 anyway. My pic of that will be up in the morning. I swatched Warp Speed when it came today. It has that MAC vanilla scent to it. It swatches more deep berry than purple (although it is described as a plum so the shade in the tube is deceiving). That being said, depending on how the light hits it, it can look more berry or more purple. I’ll probably wear it tomorrow and can let you know.

Alice Avatar

I ended up getting the Skin of Evil polish and Khaaannnn! lipglass. I decided on Khaaannnn! over Warp because of the name haha and also it would be more versatile with my lipstick collection.

I had the page open for HOURS though thinking about getting either or both of the other 2 powders (I bought Luna Luster in my first order), but decided against them when I realized I had dupes for both and even though I’m a sucker for Star Trek I didn’t NEED them at $34 a pop!

Thank you, I know I’ve looked at your instagram before, now I have it bookmarked! (I don’t have twitter or insta or I’d follow you)

Julia Avatar

I ordered the MAC powders in Highly Illogical and Strange New Worlds – If I’m honest I was super tempted to get Lunar Luster, too, but I have so many pink/peach highlights I tried to have some self-control! But they’re so pretttyyyyy 🙂

LindaP Avatar

Mellan be all like, “just another day of looking beautiful.”

Haul:
Behind the times, but I finally got the Kat Von D Shade and Light eye shadow palette. I’ve been watching Dominique Sasche videos and copying her techniques, which really suit me I think. (Her corporate look video helped me a ton.) She uses this palette quite a lot, and it works just as well for me. I think it’s a keeper.

Cover FX Correct Click Color Corrector in lavender for sallowness and peach for under eye darkness. Two thumbs up and A++++ on both. I’ve posted about my long-lost Chanel lavender powder from decades ago, and how much I loved it. FINALLY, I have something that works as well in the lavender stick. This makes a big brightening difference on my sad sallow self. 🙂

Sephora Kohl pencil in Smoky Green.

Lots of SAMPLES to try this week:
Nars Blush in Goulue — never would have bought that color, but I like it a lot!
Dior Base Mascara Lash Primer
Hourglass: Film Noir Mascara, Veil Mineral Primer, Lipstick in Icon
UD Color Correctors — Meh. Color FX better.

HAUL RETURN:
I returned the Anastasia Modern Renaissance Palette. (I have a “thing” about returning. I much rather sample, then buy. I hate the waste of returning. BUT….) I tried combo after combo after combo. I did not like it. Beautiful to look at, but it did not suit me, and it was making me unhappy. So back to Sephora it went.

WEEKEND PLANS:
No plans at all.

BEST PART OF SUMMER:
Trip to Paris. I may be back in body, but not in spirit.

Lots of samples

LindaP Avatar

Hi Christine!

I use the peach on bare under eye skin. Lavender on bare skin of face. Then top with Tarte BB Cream, then Amazing concealer in a few places under eye if I need it.

Then I have been using Becca mineral powder foundation to set it all. Very happy with this combo at the moment.

Isn’t Goulue mini the rouge re-up at present? One of the few nars I forewent, but is always running through the periphery of my make up mind. God, that’s a big chunk of brain. Far too big.

Katherine T. Avatar

Yes, I got a mini NARS Goulee in the mail when I renewed my VIB Rouge membership. It’s so pigmented that I don’t mind the small size -a little goes a long way!

Mariella Avatar

Linda, I meant to add that I too love Goulue – got a tiny one as my VIB gift (some pricey gift!) and I’m also with you both on the Modern Renaissance palette and on returning makeup in general. I also tried MR but in store as I was really dubious about all those red and deep pink/orange shades. I tried several looks at Sephora and it was a no go for me too. Like you, I hate returning makeup which is one of the many reasons I really do prefer to shop in person. I feel the cost of all those returns just gets passed on to all of us…you can bet the companies aren’t going to “eat” the loss.

Haul: Urban Decay XX Vice Ltd Reloaded palette. Urban Decay Spectrum palette, The Painter Airbrush sponge by Sephora, UD primer potion

Weekend plans: A friends birthday party and relaxing the rest of the weekend

Best part of my summer: going to Grand Cayman and hanging out with my family when we moved my daughter into her college dorm

Erin Avatar

Haul: Nothing yet! I was about to buy some stuff yesterday, forgot, and now it’s off the sale page at Sephora!
Weekend: I was going to try to start it early by doing something fun, but I’m not feeling the best this am. I have a dinner date with friends on Saturday at a favorite local restaurant of mine they haven’t been to yet. It’s an Italian food place that specializes in Venitian style Italian. I’d like to try to fit in something fun with my dog and the grocery shopping. I need to swing by Target too.
Highlight of summer: Really nothing outside short walks with my pup. I’ve been very sick. I’ve been feeling better on the hole so I want to try to spend some of this remaining good weather on little adventures. September is usually pretty nice here in the PNW, so I’ll be doing as much as my body and budget can withstand!

Katherine T. Avatar

Awww, he’s mama’s boy for sure!! Oooh, super curious about those Diorshow monos!
OMG, SO much stuff is coming today and Saturday! I’m going to be swimming in makeup 🙂
*Chanel Stylo Yeux Eyeliner in Eros (can’t wait!) and Dior Shadow Quint in Capital of Light -my wallet is crying, but I caught triple cash back week at Ebates, so every bit helps
*Ulta Platinum 5x-10x points sale – thanks to all the Ulta dollars earned, I got about 50% off everything and will have enough Ulta dollars to redeem for a free Luna Foreo at next sale (woohoo!)– Tarte Metallic shadows in Sinful and Scandal, Too Faced Lipstick in Ursula and Honey Bear Lipstick (finally!), Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Violet Riot, IT Velvet Luxe Goddess Kabuki Brush, Lorac Unzipped Gold Palette, Tarte Double Eye and Cheek palette in Courage, Catrice Prime & Fine Anti Shine Blur Stick, FAB Eye Duty Triple Remedy in Fair/Medium, Maybelline Loaded Bolds in Mauve It, and a bunch of new NYX Suede Matte Lipliners in blue ( Jet Set, Little Denim Dress, Foul Mouth) , gray/black ( Alien, Stone Fox), and purples (Sway, Amethyst, Run the World, Subversive Socialite, Oh Put It On, Aria). I’m hoping the lipliners work out b/c it’s so hard to find these colors period, much less at $4 each, less if on sale.
*MAC – another Good Luck Trolls shadow in Sun’s Out, Bums Out. I’m using one pot as a shadow, and another pot as a yellowy gold highlighter. I want Tom Ford Night Bloom Powder in Gold because it looks like a very yellowy gold, and most highlighters are either beige gold or champagne gold. But I didn’t want to pay $80 for it. I kept staring at online swatches of the Tom Ford powder for weeks and weeks, trying to figure out where I had seen a similar color. Then it dawned on me- Sun’s Out Bums Out ! It’s not an exact dupe by any means, but it’s in the same color family and for $63 less, “good enough” in my book. Both are very yellowy golds, but since I have yellow undertones, I find that a lot of the yellow blends into my skin, but there’s enough left over to give me a nice yellow gold shimmer without breaking the bank 🙂
*MAC Star Trek Collection- Lipglasses in Khaaaaannnn! and Warp Speed Ahead, Pressed Pigment/Eye Shadow in To Boldly Go, Lipsticks in Where No Man Has Gone Before and Kling-It-On. I’m a little worried about Kling-It-On, but I’m hoping one of those NYX lipliners in purple or black will help.
*Weekend -family birthday dinner, and play with all my fun goodies!!
*Best part of summer- my skin isn’t so dry, walks around the neighborhood after dinner

Christine Avatar

What a great Ulta haul, Katherine! I really lucked out the two items I was eyeing (Estee Lauder Hi-Lustres–I am SWIMMING! in lip products, so I had been waiting for a decent promo to buy the range–and IT Velvet Luxe brushes, as I wanted to pick up missing ones) were included in the 10x points offer.

Katherine T. Avatar

Christine, just want readers to know I tried MAC Star Trek Kling It On, and mine looks TONS better than the one you got. Mine looks about 95% opaque on the lips, and while there’s a slight sheerness that makes it easier to wear, there’s no patchiness or streakiness. I swatched on my hands, and mine seriously looks like it has 4x more pigment and glitter than yours. It’s also super smooth, I can’t feel any grit from the glitter at all, so I probably got a better batch. It’s a very complex, chameleon color, will be very hard to dupe–it’s a stunning blackish plum with beautiful purple and pink glitter. I was also swatching my Dior Capital of Light shadow kit at the same time, and suddenly noticed that it would pair nicely with the plum, pink, and gray shadows colors. Who would’ve thought? Such an odd couple 🙂

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Great haul! Ok, so I need to know what you think of the Chanel liners and the Dior. I have the one Chanel liner I bought with their summer palette and I love it so…. Looked at the Dior palettes and have had them in and out of my cart. I noticed today that Neiman Marcus has an exclusive Dior – Mariposa. It’s a quint of plums, pinks, and gold. I’m torn between the 2 palettes.

Katherine T. Avatar

I’m testing out the Chanel Eros and Dior Capital of Light today, will report back tonight or tomorrow. Oooh, that Dior Mariposa looks so pretty! Love me some purple shadows. According to their website, my local NM has it, along with the TF Velvet Orchid makeup collection! I was planning to do a swatchfest at local stores this Friday, I can swatch Capital of Light next to Mariposa and report back. Hope we don’t end up with both (eeek!!).

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Sounds good. I’m trying to hold off on Mariposa but it looks so pretty! My closest NM is probably 1 1/2 hrs. away with no traffic (which never happens so you always have to figure 2 hours!) I really miss being able to test out products before I buy them but on the other hand being so far probably saves me $ in the long run. I’d be in BIG trouble if I could get there every weekend! I have a $40 gift card from NM that’s supposed to be emailed within about a week so if they don’t have the Marc Jacobs Genius gel foundation in the shade I’ve been waiting to come back into stock for the past month, I’m sure one of those palettes is coming home to me…would love your thoughts after you’ve had a chance to compare and test!

Katherine T. Avatar

Michele, Chanel Eros is a winner – smooth, pigmented, and no smudging or fading over primer and shadow. It’s a medium burgundy red, with slight sheen, very hard to dupe, as most pencils are a purple red. If I catch a promo/cash back, I’m thinking of getting a backup. Dior Capital of Lights is problematic. It swatches nicely on my hands with medium pigmentation, but on the lids, it fades a lot, even over primer and cream base. The worst color is the pink, fades in minutes, even after I pack it on with foam applicators. I tried to build the purple to bold, but it fades to medium, but not as badly as the pink, and I agree with Christine-it’s kind of dry, so hard to blend out the edges. The taupey gray is really pretty and complex looking. And everything faded by the 5th hour. If you don’t mind softer pigmentation, then you’ll like it, but I expected better performance. I’m going to keep trying different cream bases, but if I can’t get it to work by Thurs, I will return it. I’ll let you know this week. The Dior colors do look very stunning paired with MAC Star Trek Kling It On ( a blackish plum with pink and purple glitter), for a sophisticated, bold edgy look. Within 15-20 min walk from my work, I have Sephora, MAC Pro Store, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms, Macy’s, Saks, Barneys, so if there’s anything else you want me to swatch, let me know. Fortunately, work is usually so busy that I have just enough time to eat lunch, so that keeps me out of trouble, but this coming Friday, they will let us out early due to holiday weekend, so I’ll have time to do a swatchfest. Just let me know, its’ just a small way to repay you for your swatches on instagram 🙂

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Thanks – will have to look at Eros. What a disappointment with the Dior. They seem to be pretty inconsistent with palettes. It almost sounds like the MAC x Zac Posen palette that looked so darn pretty but also had pigmentation issues. I didn’t get Kling It On bc I had bought the Oribe The Violet (swatch up this morning) but I think it’s probably different enough I may go back and get it. As a random suggestion, the Honest Beauty trio in Heather Mauve is pretty inexpensive ($25) and is absolutely gorgeous on. It is very well pigmented, it does kick up a bit on application depending on the brush and pressure you use but it is not dry or cakey, and it lasts all day with no fading whatsoever. I also have the Forest green one but haven’t worn it yet for testing although it swatches exceptionally well. Even when I worked in my office (DC) instead of at home we weren’t close enough to walk to anything good by way of shopping 🙁

kjh Avatar

Managed to hold off on the Ulta, but crashed and burned at Sephora. That 10x is a good example of how ulta’s rewards policy actually does benefit you…in redeemable money. I’ll check your picks, since we have similar likes, except the yellow highlighter part! That FAB is a HG for me. Did not know they had created a darker color, and got it by mistake at S. Thought it was a reformulation, since it is not greatly darker, but omg warmer and golder. Got very annoyed, which I should have been at myself! On good circle days, can get away with that and Paula long name tm. Otherwise, it’s a great concealer primer.

Katherine T. Avatar

Yes, ULTA totally rocks when it comes to frequent sales and reward dollars!! I ordered my big haul on Monday, and everything came by Friday, used to take them 2-3 weeks by snail mail, but not anymore! And I’ve been ordering from them for 3 years, never had any issues with their packing. My haul came today, all of the liquids were separately bagged, along with my lip liners, and there was bubble wrap and puffy air cushions in there. I’m thinking there must be different distribution warehouses around the country, and maybe the “good one” is assigned to my territory? I got the FAB Triple Duty because you and Wwendy were raving about it, hoping it helps my dry under eye with the dark circles.

Ginny Avatar

HAUL: NYX Vinyl Liquid Liner and ELF Precision Liner. My eyes have gotten more hooded (brow is falling a bit) so I’m trying to find a go-to liquid liner, preferably one under $10, to sharpen my skillz. In the past I have used L’Oreal Lineur Intense but I can’t remember how it performed. The NYX one is okay. Staying power is great, but sometimes goes on sheer and watery, and isn’t as easy to remove as I’d like (trying to reduce the scrubbing done to my lids). The ELF one I haven’t tried yet but hear good things. I like the liquidy ones with a brush applicator. Suggestions from the crowd are welcome 🙂

Weekend plans: Three BBQs and 1 brunch!

Best part of summer: No sunburn so far!

Ginny Avatar

I know, right! I actually found the Kat Von D Tattoo one to have great wear and come off completely clean in the shower. But it wasn’t my favorite application-wise.

monica Avatar

Haul: That 10x Ulta points and previous flash sale got me lol: I picked up the L’Oreal Infallible liquid liner to try (so far so good, but we’ll have to see how it wears through the day), another L’Oreal brow plumper gel, Soap & Glory: body butter, scrub of your life, and flake Ulta waterproof mascara top coat, RT sponges, Neutorgena eye makeup remover lotion, Mario Badescu drying lotion, Body Shop tea tree oil, cotton pads, and cotton rounds..and tons of gwp! Lots of goodies

Weekend plans: It’s going to be a busy one: Going out tonight, Saturday – moving one of my sisters in for college, and Sunday open air market

What has been the best part of your summer?: drinking all the wine and eating all the ice cream lol

Lacey J. Avatar

Haul: My last order on drugstore.com, New bottle of my fav drugstore foundation Revlon Colorstay. I am so enjoying the new pump, Elf eyebrow kit in medium, and a new eyeliner. Doesn’t matter what the name of it is though because I’m not a huge fan of it lol. Black Radiance soft focus finishing powder in golden almond, running low on my favorite bronzer, so I thought I would pick this up to supplement as bronzer.I like the color but it is too powdery.

Weekend Plans: Clean my makeup brushes, I am sure that will take me all weekend lol.

Best Part of Summer: Seeing Weird Al Yankovic in concert. Haha.

Lacey Avatar

An Ulta is opening in my town today, so I will definitely have to check it out! If they have any opening sales, I’ll pick up some necessities.

This summer hasn’t really been a special one, unfortunately. Nothing all that memorable happened except I got an unexpected opportunity to get a new-used car. I’ve driven the same car since I turned 16, and let’s just say I might be nearly twice that age now. Maybe. 😉 The car I have now is only 9 years newer than the other, but it is definitely a step up, so that was pretty exciting.

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Lacey, usually when Ulta opens a store they do an official Grand Opening for a whole weekend. With respect to the last 3 stores that opened within my general area, all of them had a gift card giveaway for the first 100 people that came in the store on each day. One event I got a $50 gift card and in another I got a $15 one. I sent my bf in and he got a $5 one (he was real happy about it – LOL). You might want to keep an eye out for a notice of an event – often they announce it on Facebook (that’s how I heard about the last one).

Lacey Avatar

Thanks for the info! I’ll have to watch for that. The store is in an entirely new shopping center, and my friends and I suspect that they will have a big grand opening for the whole center soon. We only heard that the Ulta was opening this weekend through a friend’s mom–not a big announcement anywhere.

Haul: Skindinavia make up primer spray and bridal setting spray, MAC lipsticks in Babes & Balls and Perfect Score (really, really pretty lipsticks❤️), Urban Decay Vice lipstick in Disturbed (too dark for the office but I had to have it anyway), Bobbie Brown Telluride highlighter, and the Narsissist Dual Intensity Blush Palette. I’m still working with the Nars Dual Intensity blushes to figure out the best brush and application method. I really have to press my brush into the pans, and I have to use a stiff brush instead of my softer blush brush to get any color at all. I thought I had solved the pigmentation problem by doing damp application, but noticed that the product did not apply evenly when the brush was damp. The colors are good and versatile enough to work with almost any look, which is a plus. I am hoping that they will be easier to pick up over time, once I get past the top layer.

Speaking of blushes, I just pulled out my new Becca shimmering blush in Foxglove (purchased about 2 months ago), and it is stunning! That blush with Macs Babes & Balls lipstick is perfect!

Weekend: We are going to celebrate my son-in-law’s birthday AND have our new living room furniture delivered on Saturday. BTW, Christine, our new dishwasher is wonderful?

Best part of summer: Celebrating my grand daughter’s first birthday. And eating cherries everyday, of course!

Christine Avatar

Haha! YAY for appliances that work as you want! I don’t know – the older I get, the more I appreciate when things come together and work well, or the craftsmanship of a good product. You should have seen me when we had our kitchen cabinet organizers installed, LOL!

Happy birthday to your grand daughter!

Julia Avatar

Ooohh, Telluride is lovely! I’ve been using it as an eyeshadow lately and it is just gorgeous. Glad to hear you like Foxglove, I am still hoping so much that Becca does a luminous blush palette for the holidays!

Happy birthday to your granddaughter!

Tammy Avatar

I have a MAC matte lipstick from years ago that is so dry (and was from the time I bought it) that I could not wear it and thought, because of that experience, that I could not wear matte lipsticks. These are very wearable mattes. My lips are always dry, so I do put on sugar lip balm about an hour after I put on the lipstick and I am fine.

Julia Avatar

Happy National Dog Day, Mellan!

Haul: Pretty light week (the Haul post makes me very aware and self-conscious of my purchasing habits!), I picked up a UD primer and a First Aid Beauty cleanser from the Sephora sale
Weekend plans: Looks like rain 🙁 Hoping to get at least some sun and spend as much time on the patio as possible. Also getting our first Blue Apron box!! Kind of excited about that, even though I’ve been a meal planer and scratch cooker my whole life.
What has been the best part of your summer?: The trip to Northern California, and getting our paver patio installed.

Christine Avatar

He was very keen to make sure we knew it was National Dog Day, too!

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you’ll get some sun! What made you decide to try Blue Apron? We did Blue Apron for over a year, I think, and then started to do Plated to switch it up.

Julia Avatar

Wow, a year of Blue Apron is quite a testimonial! How do you like Plated? My coworker friend just started her sub to Blue Apron and is very enthusiastic, and hubby and I have been kind of lazy/last minute about our meal planning lately. I figured with a free introductory week, what do I have to lose? Should be fun!

Christine Avatar

I like both, and I find they are mostly the same. Sometimes I think about writing up full reviews of both since I’ve used both so extensively and was never paid or comped to write about it (I find it so hard to locate reliable subscription service reviews!).

What’s great about Blue Apron/Plated is that I felt like they taught us about how to cook – things like certain steps come first, basic techniques, timing. Blue Apron has better instructions, and I find their meals easier to make for a novice chef, whereas Plated sometimes misses a detail or glosses over something. Blue Apron is a bit cheaper, but you have to fit within their combination of meals (you can’t just pick the exact ones you want, but there is still a good variety of combos). Blue Apron could really use ziplocs for their meats/fish, because it is possible for things to get punctured or torn in transit (we had it happen a few times).

Plated is more expensive per plate, but you can pick whatever you want with ease, and I like how they have add-ons like dessert or upgrading to a fancy meal (which is nice if you want to do a Friday date night at home or just want something more elevated). Plated was better at making sure nothing spilled, and if it did, it was contained (like meats), but I’ve had a bit more in bruised vegetables with Plated than Blue Apron, I think.

I’ve had no issues with either Blue Apron/Plated refunding for missing ingredients/damaged ingredients, or in the rare instance of a delivery mistake. Both services used quality ingredients that seemed well-sourced to me, and the portions seemed, primarily, like what one should eat – maybe not one would LIKE to eat and don’t expect leftovers! It is nice not having to worry about planning meals, and as I’m a two-person household, it can sometimes be annoying to cook for just two unless you eat leftovers often or are particularly good at utilizing say a bunch of parsley all week. My mom is great at that; she could totally do a show like Chopped and make something out of random ingredients.

Haul: Some clothing from Beqi Clothing arrived today! Beqi and I are good friends, so she included a free necklace for me.

Weekend plans: Blogging, eating all the yummy things I baked this week. I made pound cake, dark chocolate brownies, a lemon cake with lemon syrup.

What has been the best part of your summer?: Visiting the Heather Gardens in Fort Tryon Park.

thirteen Avatar

Haul: Too Cool For School lip tint in orange (not totally sure how I feel about it…it’s VERY orange but a light application is a sort of sparkly peach), Marc Jacobs deluxe eyeliner sampler kit, some new sheet masks, brush cleaner (thrilling!).

Weekend Plans: I have to work in my garden terribly. I’ve been feeling really badly and low energy and my garden is suffering for it. I’m doing a lot better now and ready to tackle it.

Best Part of Summer: Eating my fresh veggies, going to the farmer’s market weekly, drying my clothes on the line. But I’m ready for cooler weather and hopefully some rain. Also I’m going to Europe in the fall and I’m really excited about it.

Veronica Avatar

Haul: I nabbed a new, unused, and still boxed (!) NARS Bolero off eBay for a cool $15, so I’m pretty happy about that.

Weekend Plans: Studying. MCATs in two weeks. *bites nails*

Best part of summer: Finally getting a diagnosis that explains my sudden weight gain and chronic fatigue. My summer was a long series of doctors’ appointments, so while it wasn’t exactly fun, it was a relief to figure out what was going on.

Alice Avatar

Haul: From Urban Decay – Crux moondust shadow and Plague XX vintage shadow. From MAC Star Trek collection – Kling it On lipstick, Bird of Prey shadow, On the Hunt liquid liner, Luna Luster powder.

Weekend plans: unpacking and doing some basic house chores since we were gone for 8 days. Working on the bathroom (it’s endless). Play video games 🙂

Best part of my summer: Getting to see my family last week.

Joyce Avatar

Mellan is the sweetest little boy! Who can resist that face. My little baby dog had surgery a couple weeks ago. Thank the Lord the lump wasn’t cancerous!

Haul: Last Friday was my birthday so I went to ULTA to get my free UD Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow. I’ve been eyeing stuff on Sephora & hopping into ULTA, but nothing quite that interesting/affordable right now lol

Weekend plans: My husband is finally able to come down after 3 weeks. My grandfather had a major stroke, so my husband and I are moving from Delaware to South Carolina to live with them for a year or so.

What has been the best part of your summer?: It’s actually been very difficult for me to think of good parts of summer since this all happened. I feel like my life is completely different from what I’ve ever known. But the love and support from family & friends has been overwhelming! I’m really excited for Southern fall/winter as I’ve only ever lived in the northeast!

Christine Avatar

I hope your dog is okay, Joyce! Glad the lump wasn’t cancerous! I can imagine how terrifying that was – Mellan has a tiny twist of skin that feels a bit like a lump, and my dad noticed it at Christmastime last year, but it’s so small they say not to worry yet, but I constantly check on it!

You and your husband are very kind, generous folk to make such a move – it is no small feat to take care of someone else, especially after something as difficult as a major stroke. Wishing you all strength!

Nancy T Avatar

Mellan be like: “But Momma, the floor is SO cool on my tum-tum!” Mi tres gatos seek out sinks, tubs, tile, even the hood over the cat box!

Haul: MAC Oh My Mocha eyeshadow, and something else late last Friday? I don’t remember what it was, though! Scary!

Weekend plans: Just doing my usual routine, plus making a greater effort to physically attend my meeting on Sunday, rather than using the phone tie-in. Which is a wonderful provision, but now that I have a stable ride back and forth, I’m going.

What has been the best part of your summer: Knowing that it’s about to end! No, really, I love watching the crazy thunderstorms develop and then, from the safety of INDOORS, just look at the lightning and rain, listening to rain falling is very calming for me.
And something very encouraging has been slowly taking place; my beloved little Pookie has been eating well and she’s getting stronger every day! ? But her favorite place to sleep lately is just weird! The hood/ lid on the covered litter box! ?

Christine Avatar

Occasionally, I’ll find him on the tile after a long walk, and for all his arthritis and bad joints, he does lay everywhere – the floor, his bed, his chaise.

We hit below 80 this week! It’s a miracle 😉 I will say that I definitely love the rain and storms, but I’m less enamored of a cannon blast of thunder at 5AM as a wakeup call, haha.

We are so happy to hear that Pookie is doing better!!

Nancy T Avatar

Poor fella, one would think tile would really be very uncomfortable, even compared to wood!

OMG! That storm the other night woke you, too? Woke me from a deep sleep, and scared the cats! Not fun!

I definitely appreciate all the kind thoughts towards my “little old lady” kitty, and everyone wishing her well! I’m so relieved to see her getting back to something close to normal.

Rachel R. Avatar

Haul: No makeup/beauty items. I got a couple pairs of capped ballet flats: Leopard with patent caps and black with faux black reptile skin caps. An adorable Mad Hatter bracelet from Ashley Bridget.

Weekend plans: Meeting a lovely Facebook friend in person, and helping her move. Hopefully, the cooler weather predictions hold true.

What has been the best part of your summer?: Air conditioning 😉

Denise S. Avatar

Haul: I caught Muse’s sale and picked up Viseart’s Paris Nude, Editorial Brights and Bijoux palettes. From Sephora I brought Urban Decay’s Liquid Moondust eyeshadow in Recharged and I love it. And Moondust single eyeshadow in Solstice. I love duo chromes !
Weekend plans: Me and my daughter may catch a movie. A few household chores.
Best part of my summer: Family meeting in New York to see my son get his masters from Columbia University. And I just got back from a trip to Boston that was really nice!

Denise S. Avatar

The formula is great. Smooth and easy to blend with good pigmentation. I heard about them first on Temptalia! I now own 7 Viseart eye shadow palettes. That’s how much I love this formula, lol.

Claire L Avatar

Haul: Finished my no-buy, got Dior Capital of Light eye palette, it’s very pretty and more wearable than I expected. I have my eye on the MAC Star Trek stuff but will have to wait until there’s more money in my account before buying!

Plans for weekend: Going to the book festival here and meeting up with my fiancé’s writing group there for half an hour.

Best part of my summer: Going to a farmhouse for my MILS 60th birthday weekend, she had 4 of her friends over and it was so relaxing, our little girl could run around in the enclosed garden and explore safely. So different to our flat. Also going to the beach last weekend, the weather hadn’t been gear this summer but it was OK this time and again our little girl could run about on the sand and just enjoy playing with her little bucket and spade ?.

Haul: The Chanel Fall eyeshadow quads came. Yea!!! Haven’t tried them yet. Bought the IT 302 LBD foundation brush, a replacement Perversion 24/7 regular UD eyeliner pencil, a red lipstick-forgot what brand. Found my discontinued Prada perfume/cologne on HauteLook and ordered it. Other odds and ends.
Weekend plans: meeting friends tonight and another group tomorrow night. An old former hangout is closing so Saturday is a Goodbye to the place party.
Best part of this Summer: my husband has been on a trial retirement and has been home all Summer. My son was honorably discharged from the army and came home at the beginning of the summer. We’ve had tons of family time with our daughter, granddaughter, and goofy, funny, beautiful great granddaughter who is a 3 1/2 yr old diva.

Haul
Mac Star Trek, all lipsticks, 2 glosses, 2 powders, 2 liquid liners, one eyeshadow
In Germany nearly everything was sold out in less than one Hour, so I had to Order nearly all the things from the USA (I am soooo Angry because in a few days I will find all the products on eBay for very high prices, with every new LE it gets Worse here in Germany, more and more People just buy the things to sell them for higher prices, I also sell products When I Do not like them but I Do not buy LE just to sell it for a lot of money)
Mac it’s a strike, 2 of the powder, one to use and one for my Collection, and 2 of babes and Balls lipstick, normaly I Do not wear such Dark Reds but I want to try it with the star Trek glosses, maybe will buy more When it comes into stores next week, the chances Are better with this LE because it has no Special packaging and I will get 10 % in Store

Weekend: I Do not know the Word for it in english, on saturday in the Shop I work we Are counting everything, every Shop has to Do this twice a year, I think ist is the Same in the USA

The best Part of Summer will be When it is over and the temperatures Are not high anymore, I Know I am the only Person Who does not like summer

Christine Avatar

You’re definitely not the only one, Kylie, though it is true that most people like summer 😉 I think it might have more to do with things like being out of school, too – I feel like when I was in school, summer was SO AWESOME and now as an adult, I still like it, but it is not as special!

Ruth Avatar

I got the Tarts Shape Tape and I hate it. It’s the most prone to highlighting fine lines and wrinkles I’ve ever used. I am sooooo disappointed. Taking it back. I just got Platinum status at ULTA. I hope this doesn’t cause me to lose it. Along with my online purchases I got a gift with purchase. The little beauty bag with misc stuff in it. I think I’m going to take all that up to the women’s shelter. I wish I had more of them.

Ruth Avatar

I know, and I’m devastated because I’m not sure what else to try. I thought this was going to take care of it all. I take super good care of my skin and my skin under my eyes especially. Could it be that water vs dimethicon thing? It’s cakey. I tried 3 times. What would you advise? I’m currently using It Bye Bye Undereye. It’s pretty good but not perfect.

Tammy Avatar

I was going to try Tarte’s Shape Tape, but will steer clear. Most concealers emphasize my under eye wrinkles so I usually don’t use concealer. Sometimes the Urban Decay concealer looks nice, if Ive got a good eye cream underneath and I use a very small amount.

Dianne Avatar

Aw, Mellan looks so sweet in this photo!

Haul: So I was a little more spendy than I should’ve been and picked up the new Tarte blush in Risque and the BareMinerals Gen Nude lipstick in Queen and lipliner in Vibe. I am so ready to wear dark lips for fall!

Weekend plans: Trying to relax before the first day of school! My boyfriend and I are also celebrating our third anniversary and visiting Baltimore Aquarium and the Inner Harbor tomorrow.

Best part of my summer: Sleeping in and taking trips to the beach with friends and family.

kjh Avatar

Jussi is Velcro, too. He drags a throw rug or crate pad into a sunny spot nearby, lies down, and awaits the opening of the refrigerator or the donning of clothing to signal outgoing. Sighs mightily when I go on the computer. Haul: was that a low buy rushing by? Bridal satin (Mr. Frostee) and cool matte, pretty decent for your lowest rated Viseart. MUFE mattes. Mine is great, apparently some are not. Nars summer di blush palette. It revisited the store, then came home again. Waynes picked up no color. None. SA took a Sephora brand brush that felt like/looked like no other blush brush I’ve ever seen, felt, or would buy, and dislodged some. Decided i can ‘prime’ it with a dense Zoeva. It’s awful pretty, not highly duped in stash, not as shimmery as other dis, and you did warn us about the dryness. And that was before the Sephora sale order… That low buy took Olympic gold in the dash. Plans, other than ssdw, water, dogs (jussi and the chihuahua are not antagonistic), checking, dry cleaning, shortening possible reunion clothes, and matching up makeup/jewelry/shoes. Not tolerating socks right now and wear flip flops most of summer, bec the psoriatic toenails and psoriatic arthritic toes can be pretty painful. Hope I can wear socks, by the time the snow flies. But no hosiery for the reunion. Maybe they rate a bra, maybe not. (What your readers don’t know about being post menopausal is that your breasts never hurt any more. Really!). This summer has been worrisome, but stable. Can’t find my bff, but pretty sure she is extendedly visiting her son in nc. Nothing truly memorable, but it’s nice in this seaside town, despite the crowds.

Christine Avatar

Jussi is a smarty pants, I can tell. I’m 99% sure that Mellan knows my attention will fade from him if I pull out my phone. I swear he gives it a dirty look now!

I’m glad your summer has been decent overall, but here’s hoping your BFF gives you a call sooner rather than later!

Genevieve Avatar

Mellon just likes to be with his mum! Our grandson Lachlan, at 6 months, is like that too – he just wants to be with his mum too.
Haul: Well, I am completely excited to say that I finally tracked down the bareMinerals Soft and Smoky eye palette. I was perusing on ebay when it came up, the first time in months (it was on auction before and I don’t like that). I was so thrilled that I did a little raindance and clicked ‘buy’ immediately before someone else could get it. The price was $37 US, which was reasonable, but the international shipping is a ripper – $25 US. But I don’t care – the next night when I looked again on ebay it was gone. So thank goodness I didn’t sit and think about it. I would have been a very sad face indeed. By the way, it has rained continually in Melbourne since then.
Weekend Plans: If the weather is good, we are going to take Olivia to a miniature steam train park on Sunday- it has a big playground, pony rides and steam train rides through 8 km of bush – with tunnels and bridges. A great place.
Best part of Summer – well, I am not a fan of summer at all – it is way too hot and humid here in Melbourne. I guess what I like the most is going to the beach. I also like the summer foods – salads and BBQ’s too.

Genevieve Avatar

I am pretty sure it will be – thanks to your review. I looked at all the dupes for the shades and apart from one or two, I don’t have many. I am so looking forward to this one arriving.

ShariP Avatar

Haul: Tarte Tartlette in Bloom eyeshadow palette, Too Faced Chocolate Bar eyeshadow palette, and Urban Decay Lounge eyeshadow. I also grabbed a Sephora brand mascara that is kind of new to try. Always looking for a good mascara. I used 500 points and got the MUFE gift. It has a red lipstick, brown eyeshadow, teal eyeliner, mascara, and a one time use tester card with 4 HD foundation shades. I haven’t used much MUFE, but these are all really beautiful.
Weekend plans: Work, work, and more work. Don’t usually work on the weekend, but have a deadline to meet.
Since I haven’t had any time off this summer I will say that I have appreciated the beauty of my flower garden and our wildlife…2 does and 3 fawns…the most this season.

Pearl Avatar

Aww sweet Mellan ❤

Haul: Shiseido Refining Makeup Primer (to go with Shiseido Synchro Skin foundation) – thought I’d try this instead of cocktailing my primers and foundations. I’ve got my MAC primer and foundation(s), my Shiseido, and next on my list is to pick up Giorgio Armani primer. My HG primer has been YSL Blur perfecting primer so far but I am going to try sticking with the same company for a bit and see what that’s like.

Weekend plans: Cleaning, cooking, laundry. Saturday and Sunday are gong to be rough – I am going to my Mom’s to pick up a puppy we rescued and have been fostering and take her to her forever home.

What has been the best part of your summer?: Family visits and day trips in such beautiful weather!

Lea Avatar

I’m very late to posting, but apart from the TFord lip duos, I got an order from Sephora (split in two to take advantage of the promo codes). I got MUFE Artist Palette #1, Stila Stay All Day Lipliner in Zinfandel, ABH eyeshadows in Chocolate, Pose and Truffle Glitter (should have gotten Black Plum too, but I forgot), the MUFE 500 perk and Dr. Brant magnet mask. Figured the sample would let me see if it was any good or just gimmicky, Dr. Jart charcoal sheet masks, Sunday Riley Martian toner mini (for travel) and the Alterna 500 perk.

Anne Avatar

Haul: I got the latest Sephora Favorites “Give Me Some Lip” set which is lovely, especially as it came with a Lancome Juicy Shaker.

Weekend plans: weekends over now but it was pretty much just recovering from the long and disappointing trip to the surgeons at UCSF. Two days of driving down, a day there, and two days driving back was not fun for my chronic pain.

What has been the best part of your summer?: Honestly it’s all been kind of a bummer. Having an A/C in the living room this year has made it more bearable though.
