The Sultry Season: Benefit La La Land Lipstick

Benefit La La Land Lipstick ($18.00 for oz.) is a pinky-brown nude with full-color coverage and a light, glossy sheen and no perceptible shimmer.  I love this with a lighter smoky eye or paired with greens. It’s dark enough to be worn on its own for a pop of color on lips, but it’s light enough to complement heavier eye looks, too.  Benefit’s lipsticks are very moisturizing and creamy, so they’re comfortable to wear, and they last about three to four hours on my lips.

Is this the right deep nude for you? Would you wear it?

The Sultry Season is a series of posts featuring deep, rich shades of brown, berry, plum, and wine lipsticks and lipglosses — just right for autumn — that runs through October 2010.

I love this shade! Looks so creamy and covers so well. Do you apply lipstick straight from the tube or do you use a lip brush? I always apply lipstick straight from the tube and it never seems to some out as even as yours does.

Christine, this lippie is really flattering on you, have you used it in any looks before?

God, I had the worst dream a couple of nights ago. I had been looking through your Rouge G posts and had decided to get one (Ginger, I think it was). That night, I had a dream I was acting in a movie. I played a mum who had given up her son years ago (teenage pregnancy) and was now adopting/fostering him, but he was unaware I was his mum. The scene we were shooting was the scene in which he finds out I’m actually his mother, and he becomes furious, and there’s an awful fight etc. The really awful bit is that I am really the boy’s mum. And the actor playing my son really is the son I gave up because I wanted a movie career. And he really does know, and his hatred is real. We were re-doing a particular scene and I was reapplying Ginger, but it wouldn’t apply properly because it kept mixing with my tears. I woke up crying my eyes out.

Today I was walking past a Guerlain counter and I saw the Rouge G display and started crying again. Right in the middle of the store. Like a crazy person.

Eve though it’s not my favorite colour (I’m in the dramatic-red side hehehe) I find it really suits me, at leats for wearing it as a basic lip colour. Maybe a little pinkier, but that similar shade and intensity.
I took the Bobbi Brown advice for searching the right basic colour, that is trying it alone, with no foundation or blush or anything, so that you can really know how suits your bare face.
And that tones are the result!

Is this the full finish lipstick? I still need to try this formula and see how this is different from the silky finish (which was nice but lasted about five seconds on me).

Where have I been? I need to get on the benefit lipstick train, it looks so much like my HG Victorias Secret Lipstick that was discontinued!

Umm in general I just don’t like them, I’m not a fan of most of their packaging and I feel that most of their products are gimmicky and unnecessary. Not my cup of tea…I just prefer other brands.

Did you do something special to prep your lips before putting this lipstick on, or is that just the way the lipstick looks?

Your lips look even more smooth and picture perfect than usual!

Is there anything you’d recommend to help make lips look smoother or fill in the lines so the colour doesn’t settle in between? I want to wear cream lipsticks like this Benefits “La La Lipstick” one or MAC cremesheens but have this problem.

PS This colour is gorgeous on you, Christine =) Loves it <3!

Any dupes for this from Mac? Also, do you know how this looks compared to the Poetic License lipgloss Mac came out with last Christmas? I’ve been looking for a color like it forever!

Those of you in the UK could get this for free with the Cadbury Flake promotion. I believe it runs until the end of October. On the inside of each special promotional wrapper there is a code. Enter it on the Flake website. I’ve never won anything from promotions like this before, but I managed to get the whole set of Do Tell, Flirt Alert, La La Land and Wildcard lipsticks, and also Fresh Squeezed and Life On The A List glosses, just by eating chocolate. I had a very high percentage of wins from my wrappers 🙂

La La Land and Fresh Squeezed are possibly my favourites from this.

I actually didn’t like it in the original picture but in the full face shot it works so well. It’s the perfect everyday color for your skintone!

I love this lippie and have worn it down to a nub, but has Benefit done away with Full Finish Lipsticks? The last few times I’ve checked at Ulta & Sephora, they have only had the Silky Finish. One thing about this shade is that it seems to look a bit different on everyone. On me, it’s a pinky/beige nude; on other people, it pulls slightly mauve. You can’t beat the intense pigmentation or long wearability, though. Very similiar to a YSL Rouge Volupte at ten dollars less.

Is this a full finish or silk finish? Wanted to buy it today, but it looks different, in a short tube instead of the skinny tube version shown in you website, and the shade looks darker, too purple…
